Is a ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB) card enough to drive a single monitor for video editing

My son just given an older mac pro.
2 x 3 GHZ Quad Intel Xeon.
OSX Lion
The video card installed is an ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB)
Is this video card sufficient to drive a single monitor for video editing and basic graphics work in PhotoShop, etc?
Many thanks.

nothing I guess

For me, the best place for any type of upgrade on your Mac Pro 1,1 (mine is a 2.66) is at Other World Computing.
The only video card available from OWC is the ATI Radeon 5770 HD.

Note: The same video card is also available at the online Apple Store.
I'm hoping to get it soon.

  • Is there a known conflict between a CalDigit FASTA-GU3 sata/USB 3 card and an ATI Radeon X1900XT video card?

    Hello all.
I am having trouble with my Mac Pro (circa 2008) not powering up the monitor (an Apple HD Cinema Display 23 inch).
    Here's some history.
For about two weeks I was having trouble waking up the monitor from sleep. I would have to reboot the computer to see the screen.
Then the screen wouldn't wake up after many reboots. I tried the Apple Cinema Display on my MacBook Pro laptop an on an older Mac Mini. The display didn’t' work on any of them.
I then hooked up a Samsung monitor to all three computers in turn. The Samsung worked fine with each.
From that I deduced that it was Apple HD Cinema Display that was at fault.
I replaced it with one I bought from a friend - in perfect working condition.
The new Apple Display worked fine with my Mac Pro.
Problem solved - or so I thought.
Now, a few days later, I am having a repeat of the same problem. The Apple Cinema Display won't wake up.
I removed all the peripheral devices, still no joy.
I removed and reseated the video card (after blasting all with compressed air).
    Still no joy.
I then removed the CalDigit FASTA-GU3 sata/USB 3 card I installed about a year ago.
Now the Apple Display came back to life.
So my question is, are there know conflicts between a CalDigit FASTA-GU3 and an ATI Radeon X1900XT video card?
If so - is there a fix?
    Also open to other theories.
    Other tech specs:
Mac Pro (from around 2008) 2 x 3 GHZ Quad Intel Xeon.
    OSX Lion
The video card is an ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB)
Apple HD Cinema Display - 23 inch
    Many thanks.

Thanks for the info on the Expansion Slot Utility. I found it and ran it. It shows no problems. It shows the ATI Radeon X1900XT to be properly installed and running at full capacity.
I found a reliable dealer of flashed ATI Radeon 5770 cards. A couple of trusted friends have had good luck with cards from the dealer.
So I will have that on stand-by for when/if the existing card fails completely.
    Thanks everyone for your input.

  • Problem between a Mac Pro / 01-2007 and ATI Radeon X1900XT

    Hello,
My friend has bought a second hand ATI Radeon X1900XT with a fan Zalmann Fatality VC-ZV9 and has the following problems. She can switch on her computer without any problem and the card works fine (Photoshop, ...) As soon as she launches Secondlife client, the screen gets black few minutes after, and if she tries to switch off and on the screen, it says "No signal" anologic or digital. This card is reported to work very well with Secondlife. It can't be overheat, since it comes very quickly, and just after the crash, she can touch the card which is not hot. The fan works fine. How can I investigate to find out what goes wrong with this card ? Her computer is a Mac Pro bought in January 2007 with 3 Gb RAM and Leopard. The problems has occured before 10.5.3 version of Leopard was installed. I've made a test of the Video Memory with Techtool Deluxe and it didn't find any problem.
    Thank you

I think I'm having a similar problem: running a Mac Pro/ATI Radeon X1900XT. Was having issues with general artifacts that seemed to come and go randomly. The machine got very hot one day when the AC was not on and the office was closed: random artifact "pixel dots" became lines on the screen, and then the entire screen just went black.
I had to do a hard shut down, and it's happened several times since. When I pulled the ATI card out, there was considerable dust built up at the intake which I cleaned out. It hasn't blacked out again, but the artifacts remain on the screen.
I suspect the card is about to die, but was trying to see if anyone else had this experience? Also, if anyone recommends replacing it with the same card, or if there is a better recommendation? I do general design and photo editing, no gaming and nothing very intense.
    Thanks for the help!!

  • ATI RADEON X1900XT in G5 DUAL ?

Hello - I have a G5 DualCore (not INTEL version but the previous one) PCI expres - I have planned to purchase a new graphic card (now I have GeForce 6600) and I would like the ATI RADEON X1900XT but I have still not understand if I can mount it on my Mac or not.
Does anyone knows if it is possible put it in the G5 Dual Core (Sony)?
    Thanks for any informations

There are two versions of the X1900XT. The Mac Pro version, and the G5 version. The link that I provided you is for the G5 version that will work in the dual core G5, with no problem of compatibility.
Are "ATI RADEON X1900 G5 Mac Edition" and the " ATI RADEON X1900XT Mac Edition" the same?
No, they are different. The ATI RADEON X1900 G5 Mac Edition is for the dual core G5. The ATI RADEON X1900XT Mac Edition is for the Mac Pro.

  • Multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards in a Mac Pro

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with screen spanning with multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards. What I'm looking to do is super widescreen presentations with keynote and I need more pixels. Right now I use the Matrox Dual and Triple head to go GXMs to achieve this because they make the computer see multiple monitors as one giant display but I am limited to 3840x1200 (dual 1920x1200) I was wondering if multiple video cards would also see the displays as one giant desktop?
It works on a PC but then I have to use PowerPoint (ugh). Any help or suggestions with this? Thanks in advance.

Multiple graphics cards will make the displays act as one large desktop, but when an application is set to full screen mode, it usually will just use one display. If the application is run in window mode, you should be able to move and enlarge (by dragging the lower-right corner) the window to use all displays, but there will be a window border (and menu bar on one display). You could zoom the display slightly to move the border off-screen. There is a setting in Zoom Options of "Universal Access" system preference to stop the zoomed image from moving unless the pointer reaches an edge.

  • DKA790GX and Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 OCE Cards

Okay I have a MSI DKA790GX motherboard. (MS-7550 v1.21) with latest BIOS 1.9 loaded, a Phenom X4 9550 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 2 Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 OCE Cards.
Without any drivers installed, everything works fine. With both cards in and set up with the crossfire connection installed, you can't even complete the installation of the catalyst drivers without it locking up.
This is in Windows 7 64 bit, and have tried both Ultimate and Professional, just for kicks. With just one card installed, driver installation completes successfully and everything works as normal. With the drivers installed first like this, if I then install the second card i get a blue screen on ATIMKDAG.sys. I have tried switching the order of the cards to verify that each card works by itself.
I have also tried both the latest catalyst 10.2 drivers and the manufacturers drivers which are 9.something
I have the same 2 cards in a K9A2 Platinum running fine on Vista Ultimate 64 and now I am somewhat afraid to update it to Win 7.
About the only thing I haven't tried yet is to do the same setup in a Win 7 32 environment to see if it's any different. but a quad core CPU and 8GB RAM is kind of wasted on a 32 bit OS.
Has anyone had any similar experience with this? I am not sure where the blame is, but I suspect it is in the ATI drivers and not the OS or the motherboard.
I am open to any suggestions.

  • Hello !, can i install Mac OSX Lion to my PC (not mac)  i have got Intel Core2 Quad processor and Gigabyte P35-DS3 and 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD4850 Sapphire graphics Card ?

    Hello Guys
i want to install MacOSX to my pc
i heard something about that (like OSX86 project ?)
i have got Intel Core2 Quad processor and Gigabyte P35-DS3 and 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD4850 Sapphire graphics Card ?
    please answer .......

Teknus...  Here's the issue.  For starters, I understand software licensing issues may not be interpreted the same in all countries (although they are still applicable).  I also understand that everyone is not familiar with what software licensing is.  It is technically possible to install OS X on a PC (as you have seen on your friends computer).  However, Apple has designed OS X to only work on Macs.  In order to get OS X to work on a PC, it must be modified ("hacked").  As these forums are owned by Apple, we are not permitted to provide you with instructions on how to hack their OS.
Having said that, I have used OS X on PCs.  It is not a pleasant experience at all.  The experience is actually poor enough on a PC that I would not even use it... opting for Windows or Linux instead.  You're simply sacrificing too much of the true OS X experience when you try to run it on standard PC hardware.  If you want to try  a different operating system, give Linux a try.  There are many free versions out there and they will run on just about any PC.  The forums are also very helpful.  Linux is much more similar to OS X than Windows.
I understand that Macs are expensive and that you would like to use OS X on a PC.  The simple fact is that using it on a PC would not be the same as using it on a Mac.

  • Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing?

Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing? I'm basing this question based on the current options when configuring a Mac Pro. Currently there are three options
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Two ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB [Add $250.00]
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB [Add $200.00]
Between the second and third options I am wondering which will provide a better more productive experience for video editing. Such as using FCP or FCPX. I know how many monitors that are in use will affect the answer to this questions. While I'm more focused on which option will deliver a better video editing experience, lets just say for argument sakes that the Mac Pro is running a 30" cinema display and a small generic monitor. About 18". Its an older VGA monitor for web development.
I hope thats enough info to get an answer on this subject.
    Thanks

Ya in my research of this question, I came across this whole issue of Mac not being able to use CrossFire. I didn't thorugly investigate what this CrossFire issue was, but if it makes more sense with the singel 5870 rather than the 2 5770 then thats helpful to know.
If the Mac can't make the most out of two 5770 because it doesn't make use of CrossFire, it seems silly that Apple even bothers to offer it as an option. Plus its cheaper with the singel 5870 versus two 5770. Unless you really needed to run several monitors.
Thanks. This satisfies a long curiousity I have had.

  • 3D Graphics Cards for Video Editing (what's the real deal?)

    Hi
I've known for some time that 3D graphic cards offers no REAL significant improvements to VIDEO EDITING and RENDERING.
I also know that for real video editing, one needs the likes of Quadro cards, not 3D Gaming Cards like GEforce/Radeon.. and that the SOFTWARE being used needs to have support for using GPU for rendering such as CUDA technology
I tried to update myself and read around a bit... w/ the advancements of software today, 3D gaming cards now offer more improvements for video editing should software use 3D effects, transitions, or similar.. but still not that much really
Q1: am i on top of things so far?
And recently i found out that Adobe Premier CS4 (and other vid ed software) now takes advantage of GPU power.. (really?)
Q2: HOW MUCH advantage though? like a lot like equally as useful as CPU power?? or a bit of gpu power to help cpu?
Q3: So, would it be practical to spend $$$$ on a highend GeForce Card like GTX295 to improve video editing/rendering performance? or would it be rather more useful to spend that on higher CPU or overall PC specs?
Would really like to hear your thoughts on these.
    Thanks

In terms of impact on performance, you can rate the various components from most important to least important:
    1. CPU
    2. RAM
    3. Disk setup
    9. Video card.
Even a mildly priced card like an ATI HD 48xx is not taxed to its full capacity on a very fast system, even on a 3.8 GHz overclocked Nehalem the CPU is the bottleneck, not the GPU.

  • Which video card for video editing?

I am about to order my first iMac. I've always had MacBook Pros and have never had to choose a video card as I always just got the one that came with the laptop. I will primarlily use the iMac for video editing using FCPX
I do not know what kind of impact the video card has on vdeo editing with FCPX.
I do not play video games and I do not create complex 3D graphics.
Will I notice any better performance if I go for the faster, more expensive video card that is offered for the iMac?

    AppleBrianJones wrote:
…  will I notice a difference in performance if I go for the faster, more expensive video card…?
    not on edit.
on Im-/Export, a 'faster' GPU with more VRam could make a difference.
    but ... 'waiting' 12 or 15minutes? ... is a 20% improvement, but less than a coffee/cigarette/hello-my-dear-texting. Plus,you can do other things meanwhile ...

I just replaced my old graphics card NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 with another old model card, ATI Radeon 9800 XT. Everything was fine until I tried to update a recent ATI driver after uninstalling my old Nvidia driver with DriverCleaner Pro. I get this error message:
"Setup failed to launch installation engine: Class not registered"
Then, tried to install the driver through device manager with the update driver option. I directed to the driver folder on my desktop and the driver update went through, smoothly. However, when I put my computer in standby mode and then restore to full operation
I got a BSOD with this error msg.:
    ati2dvag.dll-Address BF039614 base at BF012000, DateStamp 49344e53
Now I can't use standby mode because the computer just shuts down instead of operating in standby.
Is there any idea why my new card is not being fully accepted in my OS and how can I fix this issue. BTW, my ATI card is an 8x speed and my AGP slot supports a max of 4x speed, but I think my card is reverse compatible with 4x slot with the same voltage (1.5V).

Thank you BOSS for your quick response:
I took your advice and reinstalled my OS, but unfortunately stand-by mode is still causing errors. The only difference is that I managed to install the ATI driver normally and no BSOD, so far.
I'm not sure what is causing this, but my humble guess would be that my ATI card is an OEM card which is pulled form a working dell computer and these cards sometimes do not integrate well when installed on non dell motherboards... However, I need to find out that that is absolutely the case before I remove my vid. card from my system
There is a memory dump file that contains the info about this error but I can't decipher...I'm not a computer savvy, but you or someone here my find the root of the problem in that file. If that will be of any help to provide you with I will, next time.
    Thanks in advance!!!

  • MSI Ati Radeon HD4850 512 Mb. & AMD Radeon HD6850 1GB GDD5 CrossFireX Possible?

Hello everyone! In this new topic, I'll try to capture a doubt that I have a few weeks ago! The question is this, I have a video card MSI ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB and XFX Ati Radeon 6850 1GB GDDR5, and my question is whether these two plates can be joined to form a CrossFireX, ie the two plates running in simultaneously. I had the opportunity to read in other forums, there are people who form a CrossFireX, with the video card that comes in the motherboard, ie onboard plate ... I can say? From already, thank you very much!

this probably will not work, the card is too old

  • ATI Radeon 9600 PRO Graphics Card

I am thinking of upgrading my graphics card, my computer came with a Nvidia Geforce4 mx, I was at the apple store and noticed a few people having problems with this card. I was wondering if anyone out there has any info for me about the odds of this card working on my Quicksilver G4 933 MHz. Iam driving a Cinema Display 20 inch. I really like gaming online and could use the added memory that the ATI Radeon Pro 9600 has, plus my curent card has problems with full screen games.

    StephanZcat,
I've been out of town for a bit and just saw your post and links. I'll do some research and see if I can come up with something. ...and maybe we can get some other experts in here.
    JBernstein:
Apple usually has a disclaimer about all 3rd party upgrades to Mac's that states they 'do not support them'. So, if it's not for sale at the Apple Store or a Dealer, "It's not supported" - even if it works just fine. For Apple Authorized Do-it-Yourself upgrades there is a page you can access:
    http://www.apple.com/support/diy/
There are many sites that track Mac upgrades, I'll list a few.
For 3rd party upgrades and issues, look at:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
    http://www.barefeats.com/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/benchmark/index.cfm
BTW, your 20' just needs at least a 32MB Video card to push it. Here's a list of most cards that will fit in your 'Sawtooth'. It's set up for Apple Cubes but the information may be helpful in
seeing the differences in video cards
    http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=1327
Note: Your Sawtooth's motherboard does NOT support ADC connections. There is no power supply for them. You will have to make sure whatever Video card you get has DVI and VGA (not ADC).
Look at this for compatible video cards for a Sawtooth:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=166&type=Video&TI=%23TimeForm at%28Now%28%29%2C&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades
Finally, there are a host of 'flashed' PC video cards available for Mac's on Ebay. I have a few and most work fine. If you want to see some options, I suggest you look at what a seller named 'yoyomarv' has for sale. Ask questions before you buy. A card you might consider is a converted NVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600
    It's a start...

  • Is there a ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphic card for 2-monitor use?

Hi, I just purchased a ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro only to discover that there is only one VGI port for a monitor. I have been using two monitors for Final Cut work since I bought my MacPro tower in 2006. I need this new card to work with fxfactory 'pan and zoom' as a plug-in in Final Cut Studio. Does anyone know if Apple makes one with two VGI ports?
    Thanks very much, Bob

    What is VGI?
If you mean VGA - VGA is a VERY old connection type and the 5770 does not have a VGA port.
    Do you mean DVI?
The card has a dual link DVI and two mini DisplayPorts. If you mean you need a second DVI connection, get a Mini DisplayPort to DVI connector from Apple or a 3rd party converter supplier.
