Is After Effects a better option for Chroma???

Hi all,
For some time I have not been happy with the quality of our finished chroma key output. I am using a green screen, professional lighting and camera operator, as well as Color Smoother, 8 Point Garbage Matte etc etc
In a previous life I used After Effects with its KEYLIGHT plug in - which seems to be one pretty powerful Chroma Keyer. While I am happy enough in FCP - I just don't feel MOTION comes near AE.
I am committed to FCP permanently but was thinking of going back to AE over MOTION as a lot of our work is green screen based.
Any thing I am missing before I blow the cash on AE?

Absolutely. If you're getting AE from a bundle and you need Photoshop and Illustrator then you'll get a good product with AE, but it should not be the goal. Shake is now just a cheap and still one of the best compositors out there. Bare in mind that Jackson used Shake to composite Lord of the Rings, and King Kong. Nobody can say that was an OK job, if only they had a better program for the compositing. You will have to learn a new interface type. AE, Final Cut, Motion, and Photoshop are all layer based apps, and shake is node based, much like Color. It's a great way to work once you get it, so spend the time to really familiarize yourself with the style. I highly recommend Shake.

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro. Results were reproduced. The verdict is:
- complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
- different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
- using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
- adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
- just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
- generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
- generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality. It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet. But unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

We need better options for genealogists, please. What happened to Reunion???

apologies for obtuse question. Reunion is apparently no longer available from App Store. Family Tree Maker is now available for MAC but is not getting good reviews. I have used both. FYM on PC and then switched to Reunion, because FTM was not available in 2008 when I got my Mac.
Now I note that Ancestry is in cahoots with FTM so am tempted to switch again but put off by the poor feedback.
I thought that Reunion was also available for Iphone but not FTM??

After Effects won't update for MAC 10.9.4 even on Root account.

I have previously updated my Mac OS to 10.9.4 and it was only until today that i wanted to use After Effects. I open up After Effects and i get an error, after some googling I am taken to a download page for the After Effects update. I downloaded the update, but when I ran it it said I had insufficient privileges. After a long string of events that involved tricking my computer into thinking it was brand new to make an admin account, i made an admin account and from there got access to the root account. Once on the root account I figured that all permissions would be open, but no, I still get the same error message of, "Please contact your system Administrator if you wish to apply updates on your machine. Updates have been suppressed by your Administrator."
Is there a button I need to press or a command i need to type in the root account that will allow me to update AE? Any help would be much appreciated.

This is not about the administrator for the computer; rather, this is about the administrator of your software licenses. Whoever distributed your Adobe software seems to have chosen the option in that distribution to disable updates. You'll need to talk with them.

Using Mocha in After Effects to make masks for grading in Speedgrade

I've just found out that there's a plugin that comes with AfterEffects CC called "Mocha", that's a fairly powerful track creating tool. And ... it can be used to create masks that SpeedGrade can then grade, even the tracked masks that currently Sg can be spotty with.
As I understand it the basic procedure is create an adjustment layer in PrPro, then create a new comp with that over in Ae, creating and applying a Mocha "shape" including any tracking commands, then going back to PrPro and through it Direct Link to Sg and then one can grade a key-framed mask that will work predictably. I'm noting this on the forum just as an fyi for people, and of course ... anyone with any experience in using Mocha masks is MOST welcome to jump in and 'splain it to us!

Just a little bit more info:
mocha AE CC is bundled with After Effects CC. This is a stand alone tracking and roto application that launches from the AE animation menu.
It specializes in "planar motion tracking" and can be used to get tracking data or roto mask data to AE.
To use mocha data in Premiere (or Speed Grade) you would need mocha Plus which is a $195 upgrade from bundled mocha AE CC. This will give the ability to copy/paste to Premiere masks and adds a 3D camera solver and lens distortion correction tools for AE.

I have bought a template for after effect on video hive and its expressions do not work because they are in english..
what can I do ? ,
except changing the language and if it's the only solution How can I do that ? just for a week .. I don't want to keep an english version

Saving After Effects CS 6 projects for use in CS 5.5

Hello all,
I'm a university student who has the academic version of After Effects CS 6 for use in my media classes. It works wonderfully and has the potential to be a real time-saver... I live off-campus and can't always get to the lab to work on my projects. That being the case, there's a problem in transferring the work to the lab machines... they have Adobe CS 5.5 installed, not CS 6. When I tried to work on the project from home on the lab computer, it throws up a compatibility error and doesn't open.
If I can't open the projects at school, then the point of using CS 6 at home is moot. How do I save projects on my CS 6 machine as to be able to open them on CS 5.5 machines?

Optimizing After Effects Performance/ Rendering Speed for large projects

Problem:
My after effects is extremely slow and i want to use an external harddrive to increase the speed temporarily until i can afford to change the internal hard drive. i also have other video production software like Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Cheetah 3D, etc.
Macbook pro with the following specs:
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB (Available space approx 91.GB)
Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

i have set my Disk Cache to use the 500GB Gtech firewire external hardrive in After Effects Preferences

As i stated earlier i am new to after effects and video editing in general so this is a learning process for me. i have also realized that i have soo much going in the layer that i need to clean up and prerender as you said. Also one of the biggest mistake i am making is with the "composed individual lyric effect" i created. As i said earlier, i masked the lyrics to audio spectrum and choose the mp3 song in other to make the effect active, but since i am working on the lyric composition individually i did not crop the yellow bar in the workframe to the exact part of the lyric that applies to the song. hence leaving me with 100+ of words with each having the full length of the song in each individual composition i created in the master layer, in addition to the spin fx effect that i have not prerendered. After effects is trying to render alll these together basically. The extremely slow rendering procesing time arose when i combined all individual lyric effect into the layer while also implementing typography tricks like in the same layer.
Basically, my question is should i reduce the frame work in each lyric composition to the exact section of the song that applies, and will this improve the overall rendering time in the master layer and solve my problem?
Also should i peform my typography skill like position, scaling rotation and so on in the individual layer/composition of the lyric effect i made in order to further save rendering time in the master layer?

Sizing PSDS for After Effects / Preparing Illustrator files for After Effects

For the longest time I have been told when importing PSDs to
After effects, in order to keep circles circles (proper ratios) I had
to make a 720 540 PSD file and then crunch it down to 720 486. Then import the file to a D1 NTSC 720 486 after effects comp and everything works fine.And it does and always has
I have now been told otherwise. People claim they view in DV NTSC view
in Photoshop at 720 486 and then just import to a 720 486 DV1 After
Effects comp and everything is fine.
That view mode in Photoshop is for viewing purposes only though so this
confuses me. Sure you can sit there and stretch your picture to look
right in that mode but that doesn't make sense. Going 540 to 486 is
quicker.
But one weird thing I noticed is if you save your PSD with the NTSC
view mode turned on it will automatically import to After Effects with
DV NTSC comp settings. Otherwise it will import into a Square Pixels
comp.
So to simplify my questions are the following.
1. Is there a way to avoid creating a 720 540 PSD and then crunching
down to 486? And somehow keep circles circles and photographs not
stretched.
2. Why does the DV viewing mode in Photoshop effect the importing into
After Effects if it's just for preview purposes?
That said I like that viewing mode in Photoshop because when I do my
720 540 to 720 486 crunch I can see that everything will look fine.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. I've been fine doing what I'm doing but for the last couple years I have been told there's a quicker way and haven't found anyone who knows.
And my final question #3 is
How do you import an illustrattor file into After Effectcs with
layers? I know how to bring sa photoshop file in with layers but everytime I import an illustrator file in , it comes in flat as one layer.

Not really and then "crunching down" is very much a matter of point of view. The real question is: Can you accept the variations e.g. in antialiasing introduced by creating your work with non-square pixels in Photoshop. Apparently doing so will affect horizontal sampling more than vertical and as there is a difference in how AE and PS deal with these matters, the result would be different. It also extends to the matter of how practical it would be to work with such files if you need to move them to applications that don't provide PAR correction...

It doesn't. The people told you only half the facts. Photoshop's PAR correction is just for viewing purposes, that's true, but it does not mean that PS itself would be unable to deal with non-square pixels. Whenever you create a files based on such presets, PS will correctly embed that information for saving, hence programs like AE that are able to extract that information, will use it to correctly interpret items.

You can't. In the strict sense Illustrator has no layers, only objects and groups and since they can be infinitely combined in the funniest ways, it's a hell of a thing to read them right. Maybe in CS5 after all these years... (or even later).

There is no "fix". AE and Premiere have been 64bit only since CS5. Sorry, but you're late to the party and better upgrade your operating system or the computer hardware in its entirety.

AE 7 Pro contained additional features (such as motion tracking/stabilization) and plugins/effects that were not included in the Standard version.
With the release of CS3, Adobe abandoned the Standard/Pro segregation - now there is only one professionally-featured After Effects.

MBP Retina Freeze after migration and no option for Reinstall

Hello,
just want to inform you, I have just maked the migration to my new MBP retina and have a problem that it will freeze only option is to boot in safe mode.
Have deinstalled apps which could be the problem such as Paralles desktop, Symantec Endtime protection, SMC Fan... still have the problem with all users.
Deleted the Startubitems, launchagents and deamons still the same problem.
So I wanted to make a complete reinstalltion and here is the problem the apple server do not let me make the reinstallation.
This version of Mac OS x 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer
Answer for the support they have to get in contact with the Itunes department this can take 2 days. So I can only enjoy my mbp in safe mode.
Kann someone help me to fix the freesing after the migration?

I can try that but I am afraid that I do than not even have the safe mode any more. Will spend 1-2 more hours to fix the problem, because after the reinstallation I will do the same migration and may end at the same situation.
So better try to fix it.
Fix the spotlight index crash and know have a new one I386_pmGetDeadline: Null pointer.
This have to do with the power management. Will try that and than let us see.
