Is cutting possible in iMovie HD 6.0.3?

Hi everyone,
I have recorded some live TV footage with a PVR hooked up to my MacPro.
I am trying to cut out the commercials.
I browsed through the Help section of iMovie HD 6.0.3 but I found no answer. Maybe I missed the info.
Is it possible to cut out parts of MPEG-2 Video in iMovie HD 6.0.3?
Rio.

Hi til man,
Thanks for your response. The video file I end up with from my recording live TV or from VHS to DVD with myTV.PVR is actually an MPEG clip.
I dragged it into iMovie HD 6.0.3 and I can play it there. But I don't know how or if it is possible to cut out parts of it with iMovie HD 6.0.3.
I also tried a friend's Elgato software EyeTV 2.3.3 which works great for editing but the ConvertX for Mac that it came with give me a lesser quality video than the myTV.PVR. It's a shame that the myTV/x software that myTV.PVR came with cannot perform any editing because the video quality (picture and sound)is better.
Anyway, thanks again for your reply.
Rio.

  • File Compatibility between Final Cut Express and iMovie '09

I am in the process of converting some old VHS tapes to DVD so I can import and edit them in Final Cut Express or iMovie '09 (I'm upgrading from iMovie '08). I would like to transfer them to a file format that I can use in either application.
Are the file formats the same in both applications or is there one in particular that I should use? I know that it is possible to open a video move created in iMovie '09 in Final Cut Express, but there some situations where I want to go in the other direction. i.e. Import the raw file that was created to be imported by Final Cut Express by iMovie '09 instead.
    Bob

It would be better if you did not get them transfered to DVD. This is a highly compressed format. If you can get the material transfered directly to QuickTime using the DV NTSC codec you would be better off.
The file formats in iMovie and FCE are not the same. iMovie uses DV Stream. FCE uses QuickTime.

  • Importing a Final Cut Movie to iMovie

Hello to all of you, lately I've been having problems importing a movie made in Final Cut (.mov) to iMovie. The iMovie just freezes in the last part. I do this because I wanted to import it later to iDVD so I could have chapters, created so I could separate the scenes where I wanted not where the machine told me.
This movie was two hours long (24 GB aprox.)
Does anyone how to help me with this?

You should be able to send your Final Cut movie to iDVD without having to use iMovie. You can make your own chapter markers in Final Cut.
If you are not planning to burn to a dual layer DVD, you will have to shorten your movie by a few minutes. Two hours is the maximum total content that you can put onto a single layer DVD, and that includes the iDVD menus. Even if your menus are simple, you will not be able to burn a movie over about 1 hour 57 minutes. Dual layer DVDs can hold twice as much as single, so you should be ok if your drive can burn dual layers.
But now, since you already have the movie into iMovie, to get it to work, try exporting it as QuickTime Full Quality. You will need enough hard drive space to do this, since you will be creating a duplicate of your movie. If you have an external drive, have it saved to that drive.
Then, open a new iMovie project, drag the new quicktime movie into it, shorten it by a couple of minutes if you need to, and create your chapter markers. Close iMovie. Open a new iDVD project, drag in the iMovie made with the qt movie.
    Should burn fine.

  • Using Final Cut project with iMovie

    Hi all,
is it possible to import a project from Final Cut to iMovie?
A friend did a DVD for us and we would like to add a video clip to it. The DVD was made in Final Cut and we have access to the original project. As I do not own Final Cut I would like to use iMovie to re-do the DVD without sacrificing all the work already done. Any suggestions?
    -Petra

I would think that the fact that the original movie project was done in FCE is immaterial, as it is now in the final delivery format of a DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Can Final Cut Pro Open iMovie projects?

I am just curious because I have a lot of clips into a project of imovie that I wanted to use in final cut pro but I could just copy all the clips but I wanted to check in advance to see if that was possible.

You used to be able to just open iMovie 06 projects in Final Cut but Apple made it a bit more complex.
In iMovie 08, select the SHARE menu and then click on "Export Final Cut Pro XML"
    Save the XMl someplace fun.
Then exit iMovie if you're finished.
Back in FCP, right-click in the Browser window and select IMPORT and then click on XML.
Navigate to find the XML you just exported from iMovie, click on it, and open it.
A new sequence is created and you simply need to load that sequence (By double-clicking).
    Everything is wonderful.
Warning, do NOT use the File | Open menu sequence which can locate and open the XML because this will cause the new COLOR program to load the iMovie Project and that wasn't so much fun.

  • Final cut integration with imovie

is it possible for my daughter or wife to do a movie in imovie and me transfer it in final cut pro to perform tasks imovie cannot do? if so, will i loose anything? if not, would it work better with express?

You can but you will lose something.
If you import the iMovie project itself (not an exported file) into FCE you will lose some effects and audio levels. Others will remain.
If you first export a QT movie from iMovie and then import this QT movie file into FCE you don't lose quality or edits, but you will lose the ability to undo any edit you applied in iMovie.
    These are the tradoffs...

  • Can I move video files from Final Cut Pro to iMovie?

I've used iMovie forever, and I just bought Final Cut Pro.  I uploaded video for a new movie into FCP, but I have an urgent need to get this movie done and don't have time to learn Final Cut Pro to do it.  Can I move my video files from FCP over to iMovie 10.0.6?  Or do I need to reload the raw video to iMovie?

No you will have to import your clips again into iMovie 10.  Projects can only be transferred from iMovie 10 to FCPX and not the other way.
    Geoff.

  • Time Delay Live Video Output?  Possible in iMovie or FCP?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
I have an artist friend who would like to set up a video feed in a gallery. The video camera would shoot one section of the installation. In a seperate room, a projector would present that live feed on the wall.
However, he would like the projected image to be on a 45-sec delay.
Is there a way, in either iMovie or Final Cut Pro (or any other piece of software/plug-in), to do this?
    Thanks!
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   iMove, FCP, Plug-ins

I don't know, Kirk. The requirements are:
    * Mac OSX/Server v10.3.9
    * Intel or PowerPC G3 or later
(G5 or Intel Core Duo processor recommended for H.264 broadcasting)
    * 128MB of RAM
    (512MB recommended for professional broadcasting)
    * QuickTime 7 or later
    * 1.0 MB Free disk space
    * Languages: QuickTime Broadcaster includes support for English, French, German, and Japanese.
Looks like the OP is running OS 10.2.X

  • Final Cut vs. IMovie

I'm new to digital movies, so my question why are there two movie editing packages here - iMovie & Final Cut. Why would one want one over the other? Is it like iPhoto vs. Photoshop?
    - Greg

Final Cut was 'bought in' by Apple; it started out as a complex video editing tool, but Apple saw the opportunity to undercut the price of another complex editing tool - "Avid", which had been the professional TV editing program (which ran on Apple hardware).
Steve Jobs wanted to be able to offer a cheap - free! - simple editing program for all the families who had ordinary "consumer" (amateur) camcorders, so he sketched out what he wanted the program to be able to do, and Glenn Reid wrote the program to Steve's specification.
So iMovie is a "cheap'n'cheerful" easy-to-use 'amateur' program, which receives camcorder clips down a FireWire cable, and lets you join them together, cut them up, fiddle with the sound, add effects, and then export the results back to a camcorder tape, to QuickTime (..to display on a computer screen..) or to a DVD.
Final Cut Pro (..and the slightly less fully-featured Final Cut Express, which is a 'cut-down' version of Pro..) is meant for professional TV editors (..and movie editors, after the movie footage has been transferred to video..) and lets you import virtually any kind of footage, from any type of video camera or deck, store it in virtual 'bins', use the same footage in several concurrent projects, layer multiple video tracks on top of each other (..useful when scenes have been shot simultaneously from several angles with several cameras, as you do in live TV..) and multiple audio tracks, and -v-e-r-y- -p-r-e-c-i-s-e-l-y- edit them, apply effects, tweak and 'polish' the audio, re-edit and adjust everything, and export it all to virtually any kind of media.
It has multiple complex settings for importing footage, before you get anywhere near the actual importing (..setting frame rates, 'device control' - the method for controlling the camcorder or tape deck, 'TV legal' maximum brightness levels, field dominance, timecode system, bits per pixel, intermediate codec - if required for packing more video at reduced frame rate onto your hard disc, frame size in pixels, etc, etc).
So your comparison is right ..and the reason for the two editing packages is that one's a pro system, which has pulled the rug out from under Avid, and the other's "..for the rest of us".

  • How to compress/adjust imported videos in Final Cut Pro and iMovie?

Left: what the video looks like when played in iPhoto or Quicktime (Dimensions: 960 x 720, Codecs: AAC, H.264) .mov
Right:  what the video looks like when played in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
    SOS

the left shot is 4:3 (960/720)
    the right shot is a 16:9 project (1920/1080 or 1280/720) with a stretched-to-fit 4.3 video.
If you want an un-stretched project, set it to 4:3 manually when you create a New project, or use the transform-tool and resize the video - which will add bars l/r or chops-off t/b of the video...
or use the Spatial Confirm settings in the Inspector ...

  • Is this possible in iMove '08? (Multiple videos on screen)

    Hi,
Firstly, I apologise if this thread has been made before. I have no idea what to search for, because, whilst I'm sure there's a term for the effect I'm curious about, I have no idea what is it.
I'm just curious as to whether it is possible to put more than one video on screen at any given time in iMovie, in a grid or similar arrangement - a bit like the Ode to Joy cover on Youtube.
    Thanks in advance,
    Angus

No, but you can do this in QuickTime Pro.

  • Copying old VHS tapes via Director's Cut box into iMovie '08

Hi all, I'm trying to copy some old VHS home movies via a Director's Cut digitizer box into iMovie '08.
As the tape plays from the VHS player, the picture in the import window freezes every few seconds and then restarts, with the import timer resetting (in the top right of the window)? It's almost as if the digitizer box or iMovie is picking up some old editing codes and doing its own scene selections. Sometimes it does it after only a few seconds, other times it will go for a minute or so.
After it has processed the old tape, when you're in preview playback, fractions of the picture and sound are missing where it's done this odd "cutting". Any ideas?
    Thanks

    -Power everything off.
-Make sure all your connections are correct: a/v from your VCR to the Miglia ... FW from the Miglia to your iMac. Make sure the Miglia is the ONLY FireWire device connected to your iMac. No other FireWire devices should be connected.
-Turn on the Miglia. Make sure it is in NTSC mode; toggle it to NTSC if necessary. Then turn it off. Wait 10-15 seconds. Then turn it on again (required when you change between PAL and NTSC).
-Turn on your VCR, with a tape ready to play.
    -Then boot your iMac.
    -Start up iMovie.
-Make sure your iMovie Preferences show New Project Frame Rate = 29.97 fps (NTSC) - not 25 fps (PAL).
    -Create a new iMovie project.
-Start your VCR playback BEFORE you begin capturing in iMovie.
Let us know if this solves the problem.

  • How to cut clips on iMovie for iPhone 4

I can't figure out how to remove extraneous footage from a clip in the iMovie app for iPhone 4. It's driving me crazy. How can you delete a part of a clip??

This is what I am trying to do. Selecting it makes the yellow clip "ends" show up, but then HOW to consistent get the segment clipped with the next touch to the screen? Is it a tap and finger scrape? Sometimes I am successful but A) most of the time NOTHING happens, and B) I can't get a feel for the control in order to get the cut just right.
    AArgh.
To top it off, when I went to put my music on, AFTER I worked a couple hours on my first imovie on the phone, SOMEHOW the entire app disappeared from my phone!! Yes, it was on my iMac, but when I reloaded it onto the phone again, my little movie was gone! What the **** happened?? (I am now trying to do my little movie again - good practice, anyway...)
