Is it better for the computer to shut it down or put it to sleep?

For a while I thought that it was bad to put a computer to sleep, but that was when I had a really old colored OS 9.1 iMac. Someone else who uses a powerbook G4 said that sleeping is better, and that they never actually turn off the computer.
I ask this because right now, I shut the computer off whenever I'm done with it, and start it up again to use it, and I do this frequently enough that it seems excessive.

Griff, does putting the computer into hibernate like this protect the hardware in the same way as 'sleep' apparently does? What is the benefit, from the machine's point of view, in deep sleep as opposed to complete shut down? Is there any difference in terms of stress on components etc if you have to press the power button to wake it up again?
I'm very interested in this because I have a couple of firewire devices connected which I would rather not leave permanently powered (i.e. plugged into the firewire ports while the machine is either on or in sleep mode). Also, I would rather not hotplug them constantly to shut off the bus power. So, if Deep Sleep was a way to cut the power to the bus while also not fully shutting down the computer and thus putting less strain on the components over time, that would be great.

  • If i go to sleep every day and I came back like 10 or 12 hours later and use the computer, should I shut it down or put it to sleep? Cause I dont know when I have to do each.

I dont know when I have to shut it down and when put it to sleep

Unless you plan not to use the computer for an extended period of days then just put it to sleep. I leave my computers on 24/7. When not in use I put them to sleep but never shutdown.
With laptops I only shutdown for travel.

  • Which is better for a MacBook, shutting it down or putting it to sleep?

I been researching the question for a while now and have not found an informed answer yet:
Is it "better" for my MacBook to be shut down over periods of inactivity or to be put to sleep? (with a period of inactivity being 6 hours or more)
Which option saves more battery life (if either)?
Which option saves the life of my MacBook (if either)?
    -Thanks.

The Macbook, Macbook Pro and other Apple portable systems are designed for a very robust uptime. You shouldn't need to reboot your machine except for battery maintenance (drain the battery about once a month), and when applications or hardware components misbehave. With that thought in mind, I would put the computer to sleep rather than shut it down--the exception might be when the period of inactivity runs to several days or more.

  • I use my MacBookPro sporadically during the day.  Should I shut it down or put it to sleep during the day?

I use my MacBookPro sporadically during the day.  Should I shut it off after each use or put it to sleep?

You will get various answers to this type of question.  Everyone has their preferences.  Read the user manual that came w/your MBP for sleep & shut down recommendations.

  • Is the wall charger better for the battery then using the computer?

I was looking for things for my Shuffle to add to my Christmas list when I came across this in the Apple Store. Someones review said that this item is better for the battery as when you plug it into a computer it drains the battery, then recharges it. As to this iten which charges the empty space only and does not drain the battery before recharging. Is this true? I will give points to those who can answer.

Apparently it makes no difference to the life of the battery how or how often you charge it.
I charge mine in a USB port on the external speakers I bought (iSound) and a full charge takes about 3 hours. - this is about the same as just plugging it into your USB port on your PC.
(I tend to just top up the charge after a couple of uses)
I just find it more convenient to be able to charge it without having to power up the PC everytime.

Claire, please post your machine specs as requested. There are some variants of the MBP with specific hardware issues. Example: the older "silver key" MBPs with 2.2Ghz and faster processors can have a defective video chipset that produces a black screen or distorted video. That problem is covered under an Apple program that will fix this at no cost to you if you computer is that model.
Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That launches System Profiler for you. The first screen looks like this:
The second line, "Model Identifier" (or "Machine Model" if you are running OS10.4) precisely identifies your MBP variant. Post that, and include it in your equipment info in your profile for future posts. That means people don't have to ask, and you get faster help that is targeted to your specific model. Saves everybody a bunch of keystrokes and you get better advice.

  • I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. suggestions to complete backup please?

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • How to find out what is the lock key for the computer

How to find out what is the lock key for the computer?

    You don't.
If you forgot or lost the password, all you can practically do is reset it.
The manner in which you do so depends on what version of OS X you are running. The older versions utilize the reset password utility on your recovery/re-installation disk/drive.
On Lion, you use the following technique to reset the Administrators password:
Boot to your Lion Recovery Partition, by holding down the Option key while starting, and then selecting the Recovery HD as the boot choice.
Once booted, at the top of the screen is a menu ..., select Utilities / Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A “Reset Password” window will open. Select your boot volume (your SSD drive) if it is not already selected. Select your administrators username from the menu labeled “Select the user account” if it is not already selected. Follow the prompts to reset the password. Restart the computer from the apple menu.

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

  • Should the fan in my MacBook Air be running when the computer is shut and asleep?

Mine is, and this seems like a waste of battery life. I feel like the fan used to shut off when the computer was shut. But now, even when I close the MacBook, the fan still runs as fast as it did when the computer was open. Anyone know what the heck is going on here?

Yeah I think it is a Mavericks thing. Mine actually wasn't too bad. I closed the lid at night when my power was at about 52% and the fan kept going. I just went to bed, and in the morning, the fan had stopped, and my power was still around 51%, so it didn't eat any of my power like I thought it was going to. Mavericks must have the ability to cool your computer when needed even after you close it. It actually turned out to be not that big a deal.

  • Dark or bright theme? Which is better for the eyes?

    Hello!
Recently i have found on kde-look.org a dark color scheme named Optimal. Author of this theme, on the basis of two web sites, argues that dark themes are better for the eyes or reduces eyes strain. There was a great discussion on Stackexchange forum with very different opinions. I have found out that for me the best color scheme is black on dark grey.
What is your thought? Which color scheme is better for the eyes by your opinion?

Really?  No offense, but this is becoming a signicant problem now that there is so much "information" available: people cannot critically evaluate the source of information.
Graysky sensibly raised skepticism about the "random person on the internet" that you referred to.  And in response you not that he, in turn, cites two other "random people on the internet".  The fact that one web page links to other web pages that agree with it, does not make it's claims any more reliable.
I would not be surprised if there was good research on this - and I myself tend to like dark themes - but random links are just that: random links.
First of all – i didn't say anything about "scientific sources" etc., i just said that it was based on two internet sources which can be or not true. Nevertheles, it is interesting because this color scheme is built systematically on premises in these websites. I didn't say it is true but it is interesting, tough. And that led me to create this topic in order to better educate myself regarding colors.

  • Is it better for your battery if you let it run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity?  Which is better for the life of the battery?

I was wondering it the life of the battery would last longer if you let the battery run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity even if it doesn't have a low battery?  Which is better for the life of the battery and prolong the life of the battery?

I've had a iPhone 4s since March 2012, and it's battery is pretty useless now.  I was using the app Battery Doctor (Battery Saver, Battery Life) by Beijing Kingsoft Internet Security software, which encourages the user to charge more often, whenever battery life drops below 100% full and greater than 20% full, and gives ratings according to the number of full, partial & overcharges done, but I'm concerned that charging like that actually results in worse battery life??
I now have an new iPhone 5 and don't want the battery to only last as short as the last one did
    Any advice/comments please
