Is it normal for the laptop to run warm if doing an extended hardware test?

My question pretty much... because it feels warm.

Hi greyskiesblack
Agree w/ ds store: he's on point!
I use a Belkin laptop cooler that I picked up at WallyMart (WalMart). has small 11/2 fan also use one for 2TB Time Capsule w/ TC upside down on it to cool. Belkin has USB and works well as TC has a USB port also.
BTW new iPhone 4S(64GB) runs way too hot w/ AC charger but fine w/ USB as a charger. Battery life, of course is significantly reduced by heat.

  • Is it normal for the fans to run at 5500RPM at all times??

Tekserve in NYC seems to think so.
My MBP's fans always ran the way they should. Low speed and low noise until the processors got hot. Ever since I got the hard drive swapped out at Best Buy, the fans got loud immediately and stayed that way. I took it back to BB and the guy was sorry he couldn't fix it, but he did install a program called Fan Control in his attempts. The program doesn't work, but it does indicate the fans' speed, which is always between 5200 and 5500RPM.
I posted here and got some suggestions, which didn't help, unfortunately: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1777907&tstart=0
Many months later, I got the chance to take it to Tekserve, who are supposed to be Apple gurus. After they held the laptop for two weeks, they not only didn't fix the problem, but they tried to convince me there there wasn't a problem to begin with. I have to say, I was insulted by that. They obviously were trying to save face by not admitting that they didn't know how to fix the problem, but at least the Best Buy guy was honest. Tekserve didn't have to make me feel I was a loon who was seeing UFO's or something.
Interestingly, they refunded my $140 diagnostic fee. Fair, but why do that unless they felt they didn't do their job?
Anyway, enough about that experience. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem may be with these fans? Or better yet, does anyone know of a good Apple repair place in New York City?

    Pentent,
Set up an appointment with a "Genius" at whatever location is most convenient to you. This will cost nothing.
It is possible that one or more temp sensors were damaged when the hard drive was swapped, or a cable for one or more was not re-connected properly. Again, this is another reason to trust only Apple with your Apple product (DISCLAIMER: Even Apple can and does mess up a job like this from time to time ).
If I were in your shoes, and provided the Apple Genius can offer no help, I would take it back to the shop that replaced the drive. They are the ones that messed it up (and make no mistake; it was messed up by the replacement), and they are the ones that should fix it free of charge!
    Scott
EDIT: Don't go in expecting this right from the start, but there is the possibility that the Genius will have an in-house tech crack the case and look for loose connections, etc. If the problem is nothing more than an overlooked connector not put back in place, it may cost you nothing. Now that I think of it, I do recommend that you boot to the "Hardware Test" utility that is on your "Software Restore" disk #1, and look for fan/sensor errors. Insert the disk, then hold the "D" key when you hear the startup chime. This will give you some ammo when dealing with either the Genius or the shop that replaced the drive, or both. -s

  • Is it normal for the fan to run at all time ?????

The fan of my imac g5 1.6, never stops runing, its to the point that its anoying.
And lately, the fan gets super loud, and frezes the computer, and i have to force quit to get thing back to normal...what can i do ?????

Your loud fans and subsequent freezes could be indicative of a Power Supply Unit failure. Does your serial number fall withing the range of this Repair Extension Program?
It would be helpful if you posted your iMac model in your Public Profile so people can get a better idea of what your problem could be. The PSU problem is most prevalent with Rev A Macs, but is seen in all the Revs.
Let us know how you do,

  • A document page opens that is too big for the display and runs off the end of the monitor

How do you fix a problem where document pages open that are too big for the display and runs off the end of the monitor? The borders are off the monitor so there is no window edge to grab and adjust.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Is it normal for the retina macbook pro screen to wobble?

I have a retina macbook pro 13inch 2014 version. Whenever i play the laptop on a flat surface for the first time it wobbles a bit. Is it normal for the screen to wobble a bit while placing it on a flat surface? After that initial wobble there is no wobble.

No, that is not normal. There could be some problem with the screen.
As it is still under warranty, why not go to an Apple Shop and ask them about the problem?

Every other time I boot the MacBook it hangs at a grey screen with the prohibitory sign. Verbose reveals a "still waiting for root device" error. Now if I reboot from that hang, it boots fine, but then will hang again the next time. It keeps alternating like this. Any ideas??
I am not running any third party trim software, so that's not the issue.

    Hello,
    the simple answer is no.
The Lenovo powermanager should do the work for you.
May be you are able to switch charging to automatic charging in powermanager settings.
I don´t know if the option, in the newest versions of powermanager, is choosen as standard.
May be there isn´t a switch or checkbox, cause the manager is doing it already.
But it won´t harm your battery, when you let it plugged in AC.

  • I want to connnect my early 2012 MBP to my LG HDMI. I have the HDMI cable. What connector do I need for the laptop?

Please give me the name of the connector for the laptop. Is it a "display port"?

Note that you'll find two alternatives: one that has a TB plug at one end and a little box with a female HDMI jack at the other or a cable that has male TB and HDMI plugs at both ends. First one gives you the flexibility of using a standard HDMI cable of whatever length you need, at an extra cost. Second simplifies things and eliminates one connection (and possible point of failure), but may limit how far away you can place the computer from the display.

You have to have an Array within the ArrayCollection for it
    to do anything,
since ArrayCollection is just a wrapper for Array...

  • I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with their imac fans being extremely loud when running at slow speeds?  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at higher speeds they quiet down. New HD fan was just installed.

I have an imac that I've had for a couple years.  The fans have always been loud when running at the slower speeds.  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at a higher speed the fans quiet down.  I had installed SMC fan control after multiple attempts with Apple to get the fan issue resolved.  That seemed to keep the fans quiet enough.  I've never had a problem with overheating.  Recently the fans were becoming loud again even running at the slightly higher speeds so I took it to my local Apple store and they replaced the hard drive fan.  I got it back and it's now as loud or louder than ever!!  And, now SMC fan control won't "stick."  The fans will speed up, but then gradually go back to the lower "loud" levels.  I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

    Thanks jared,
I'm still dealing with this issue through Apple. Some time after I posted this, I contacted Apple again. They did start a case up for me, as I was experiencing the same behavior on two different machines, with two different versions of Windows.
So far it remains unsolved. I've logged iClouds for Windows on my desktop, which is brand new, then logged for awhile after completely uninstalling Norton Security Suite, depending on the Microsoft security for some time, and finally logged after I uninstalled iCloud for Windows, restarted, installed a clean download, and connected using a completely different test account, which Apple set up for me. None of this made any difference. Looking at the logs, it seems every 10 minutes, iCloudServices.exe creates a new TCP connection to confirm I'm using less than 5GB on iCloud, (which I am by a good margin, using less than 2GB), it seems this connection is not closed, and when the next iteration rolls around 10 minutes later, a new TCP connection is created. I come very close to having 6 TCP connections created per hour, until I restart my computer. This works out to... 6 x 24 = 144/day.
Perhaps the article you posted will shed some further light on this. I'm thinking seeing the state of the connection through netstats, at the least, could help.
For the last week, I've been putting a hold on further logging, as Apple wants me to create a new user account on one of my computers, install iCloud for Windows there, and log it running in the other account. This however basically means I cannot use my computer for a fair number of hours, and I've been busy enough with work the past week that I haven't the time or energy to afford to set this up and run it. I've had need of my computers too much for the past week.

  • I ADDED A CAMERA USING wpS THAT SCREWED UP MY WIFI. i RISTALLED AND NOW MY LAPTOP IS GETTING THE NET, BUT MY IPAD ISN'T ACCEPTING THE PASSWORD--THE SAME AS i USED FOR THE LAPTOP.

I added a dlink camera and used WPS to do that. It apparently disabled my regular wifi. I reloaded the disk for my dlink router and now my laptop is getting a signal, but my ipad won't accept the [passwrd-the same one I used for the laptop.

Just double check that reloading the disk for the router did not restore it to factore settings and reset the password to the factory default password.
Try settings/general/reset/reset network settings and try again to connect with the ipad

    Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).
