Is it normal to take this long?

I put together a number of clips I took on my iPhone into one single movie using iMovie. Total running time is about 30 minutes. However, when I went to finalize the project, it says it will take 12 HOURS!
Now, I am running this (iMovie 11) on an iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB on RAM, running under OS X v 10.6.6. I don't think this is a slow machine, but 12 hours is a bit of a stretch for a simple 30 video.
Is this normal? Is there any way to speed this up?
I am sort of new to the Mac world, and it is my understanding that professionals use these machines to produce professional type videos. So, if they are producing a 2 hour video, is it going to take 48 hours of rendering?

However, when I went to finalize the project, it says it will take 12 HOURS!
That does sound abnormal to me. If you have chosen the option in iMovie's menu "File>Finalize Project", iMovie will render all the available sizes, such as Medium, Large, HD 720p and HD 1080p. This will certainly take much longer than rendering just one size. So, unless you really need all these sizes, it's best to use Share>Media Browser and select just the size you want.
Note that to locate the shared movie (or movies), in Finder (multi-column view), go to your User (Home) folder and click on the Movies folder then iMovie Projects. Right-click (or Control-click) on the name of your project and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. Now click on Movies - you will see the exported movie (or movies) with a name like large.m4v, medium.m4v, 720p.mov or similar. Copy the appropriate movie then paste to the Desktop, otherwise access it from the Media Browser in applications like iDVD etc.

  • I have a macbook pro and have just updated my itunes to the 10.5, it has been sitting on the 'software update' box for 2 and a half hours and only has about 3mm of space left that is not blue. Is it normal to take this long downloading this update? Help!

I have been sitting looking at the blue line almost finished for over 2 hours. It says Writing files... underneath and Installing 11 items above the blue box. What should i do? Is there a problem or is it just taking a long time?? Im trying to set up my new iphone 4S but cant until this itunes is updated!
    Please help.
    Cheers

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

  • TS2529 "Waiting for changes to be applied" has been showing for over 2 hours after I selected "Automatically Backup to this computer", then hit Apply.  Is it stuck or does it take this long??  Trying to fully backup my iphone 4 before adding it to my new

I just bought an iphone 5.  I came home to backup my iphone 4 to my pc (Windows 7).  I transferred purchases, then selected "automatically Backup", then clicked on "This Computer", saying a full backup would be stored on this computer.  that was almost 3 hours ago.  the slanted lines are continually moving across the to and the circle with arrows is still revolving on my phone and beside my device name on the side toolbar.  Is it stuck or does it really take this long?  My 16GB phone is almost full, so there's not a lot of empty space available.  I want to stop it but I'm scared I'll lost the info on my phone.  I do have it backed up to icloud, but that doesn't get everything, does it?  Help please!  I'm not real computer savvy, or itunes savvy, so please speak plain talk!  Thank you!

iPad, iPod not syncing on Mavericks…. I-Tunes freezing on connection of same to the usb port!  The following fixed these issues on my MacBook Pro running 10.9.3.  I do have Xcode on my laptop, but have never used it….  I’m not a programmer or hacker, just a cheesed of Apple fan.  I tried many of the already suggested possible fixes and nothing helped. Got fed up using the disk repair utility and getting no further on.
I opened System Preferences, Security & Privacy/Privacy.  In Accessibility, after having scanned all my files many times, I added the following apps, some of them may be developer tools from Xcode, and gave them all control….. then did a computer restart.

  • Is it normal maverick takes so long to download?

Is it normal maverick takes so long to download?

Yes it does take over two hours and I have a fibre optic High Speed line. It is a very large download.  From advice that I've given others, ideally you should only undertake this when there are low volume users on the line.  When I say this I'm really saying the best time to downlaod is in the early hours of the morning.  It's been quite amazing over the Christmas period just how many people complained about it getting stuck on a download. They didn't think that the world and his uncle was surfing the net, all at the same time.

  • Trying to restore my iPhone 5 from a backup but its says that it will take over 24 hours to finish. Is there something I can try to do to speed this up? I feel like it shouldn't take this long

So I have been restoring my iPhone5 from a backup for about 3 hours now however iTunes still says that it is going to take over 24 hours to complete the restore process and the progress bar hasn't moved much at all. I feel like something has gone wrong somehow and it shouldn't take this long to complete. Is there something I can do to speed up this process or do I just have to try to wait it out? I'm scared to just unplug my phone and try again since it might screw something up.

if u unplug then that could put ur device into recovery mode. i would wait

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It looks like your MacBook Pro is restarting. Just hold the Power button until your computer turns off, and then turn it on again, so OS X should start properly

  • Is It Going To Take This Long?

It's a 10 minute movie and it says it'll take this long...
And it keeps going up. Will it take this long? Is it a glitch?

I think that the 'time remaining' number is purely mathematical and is related to the speed of the process as it is interpreted every few seconds. If your movie has some stills, the process is faster and the number goes down a bit; when it is compressing a long video clip, the number rises. Sometimes I see a very high number initially, but then it goes down to a more reasonable time. I have an Intel duo processor and find that the time given is faster than when I did this on my G4. My movies are usually about 1hr55 min, and usually it takes about 3 hours to share as a Full quality QuickTime movie.

  • Does backup take this long or is it frozen? (iOS 5)

I am attempting to update my iphone 4 to iOS5.  I already installed itunes 10.5, restarted it.  Plugged in my iphone 4.  It says its "backing up." However, the progress bar hasn't moved in the last 30 minutes.  My iphone says "sync in progress"  Is it frozen??  Does backup usually take this long?  This is the second time I have tried this.  last time, I tried clicking the "x" to stop the backup process, but nothing happened for the next 40 minutes.  Then I tried  "slide to cancel" on my iphone, got to the home screen, but itunes said it was still backing up!  So this is my second time trying this.  Please help! What's wrong? What can I do to fix it?

I just exported a self-contained QT file without converting it to reduce the size and it only took maybe 5 minutes if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, the file size was 13 gigs. Too big for a DVD<<</div>
Of course it's too big for DVD. DVD-Video is highly compressed MPEG-2. Take you self-contained movie and use Compressor to encode the file into MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio, then import those files into DVD-SP for authoring.
    - OR -
Import the self-contained movie into DVD-SP directly and let it do the encoding after you've authored the disc.
    - OR -
Import the self-contained movie into iDVD and let it do the encoding/authoring with it's consumerish one-button approach.
Am I going about it correctly and just need to have patience? Or is there a more efficient means?<<</div>
Patience is always a good thing, ESPECIALLY when rendering or encoding an 80 minute video from one format to another. But what you really need is a better understanding of the DVD creation process; it isn't as simple as exporting from FCP.

  • Should it take this long to sync my Nano for the first time? Nine hours and counting!!!

New Nano. Installed itunes on my laptop...moved all my music into the library. Checked the songs I want on my and chose to sync the lower 128kbps for syncing. Started this sync over nine hours ago and am a little over halway done syncing the 8.6gb of audio. Should it take this long? Is this what I can expect everytime I sync my ipod?

No you shouldn't expect this everytime you sync your Nano.  The conversion process to 128 kpbs AAC option may be the cause of the issue.  However, they should now be already converted, so the next time you sync your iPod, it should only take a fraction of the amount of time it has this first time.
In short, no need to worry.

  • HT201269 I'm updating from my iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5 and have been 'restoring' for 2 hours now and the progress bar still states I hae 6 hours remaining. Will it really take this long? How long should a restore take? It's a 32gb device. Thanks.

I am having this problem.  At first with the new iPhone 5, and then with the iPad 2.  I am not sure why this is happening.
My gut feeling is this is an iO6 issue and here's why -
The problem mainly occurs with apps.  I have about 150 apps, and when I plugged in the phone, iTunes went to sync all of them.  The process would hang up after about 20 - 30 apps were loaded onto the phone. I could tell where about the process hung up because the apps on the phone showed up as "waiting".
Then on the iPad 2 I plugged in to sync and saw there was a huge "Other" component in my storage.  It required me to restore the iPad 2 from backup.  With this restore the same issues occurred - putting the apps back on the iPad would hang up.  The videos on the iPad also got stuck - maybe after about 10 hours of videos transfered iTunes crashed.
My solution has been to soft reset the device, restart Windows, and continue the process until it's complete.  This is remarkably inefficient and time-intensive but everything works with patience.
I have been wondering if others have had these same problems.

  • Is it meant to take this long?

Okay, I've had to leave my computer on for like 3 days now because I'm imported the entire Dragonball GT series which is 64 episodes each lasting around 20 mins each and before they can be synced onto my iPod they need to be converted and so its just taking forever. Its just done half of them but this is ridiculous.
I'm using iPod Classic if that helps. So is there anyway to speed the converting up and get it onto my iPod?

I cannot imagine the Rendering for a Motion Menu taking this long, if all is right with the Asset used in that Menu. I've rendered 2.5 hour Projects in far less time.
I'd check that Asset. What is its format/CODEC? How long is it? Is the Audio separate from the Video?
Also, do a search on this forum for "render" and variations on "render bar dropping back," as there have been a lot of articles on this happening, though usually with the full Render/Burn of the DVD. Some of these have tied that problem to mouse-drivers.

  • I purchased a movie from Apple Tv at 9am this morning it is still downloading does it normally take this long, I purchased a movie from Apple Tv at 9am this morning it is still downloading does it normally take this long

I have double checked that the apple tv is connected to my wifi (as my I-phone is working correctly) I downlaoded the update page from apple tv, how ever the movie I rented this morning is still downlaoding 9 its 3:30pm) my kids tell me it should only take a couple of minutes is there anything I can check???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

First of all, that's Compressor 4 so you have to post the question here: https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/compressor_4
Second, I don't see what ypur source and destination codecs are. You should post that in your new thread at the above link.
