Is it possable to put a newer iOS on my 2nd gen?

I own a 2nd gen ipod touch with iOS 4.2 but i know theres a newer update for 3rd gen and above, is it possable to manually put the new iOS on my ipod?

I know of no way to crowbar on a version of iOS not built to support a given model of iPod. Even if there were a way, though, it would require jailbreaking your iPod, something we cannot discuss in Apple's forums. If you want a newer version of iOS on an iPod touch, you should sell your 2nd-generation model and purchase a newer iPod. That would be far more satisfactory than forcing an unsupported OS onto your device; Apple doesn't provide newer versions of iOS for your iPod largely because your iPod's hardware can't support the new features.

How are you trying to accomplish these two tasks?
The correct way is as follows:
Camera zoom: pinch with your fingers like you do when viewing pictures.
Camera button in lock screen: Double-tap on the home button while in lock screen
If you are already doing it that way and it doesn't work, then maybe someone else here has another idea.

Error msg when trying to sync new songs to iPod 2nd gen.

I can't get newly downloaded songs to sync to my ipod nano 2nd gen. They show up & play in iTunes.
I have downloaded latest iTunes software & reset/restored my iPod & continue to get the following message:
Can not sync song. An error has occurred. (+50)
I need a new playlist - help!

Could be a problem with the iPod's hard disk or file storage. Maybe try doing a low level reformat of the iPod's storage using the instructions in this article.

I upgraded my iMac to OS 10.8.2 yesterday. Now iTunes will not sync with any of my devices - Apple TV (gen 1), iPhone 5 (with new iOS 6), or first gen iPad. I get an "unknown error 1140" for each device. Any ideas?

Because the sync error is on every single device, and all 3 are running different versions of an OS, I assume this has to do with the new Mountain Lion upgrade. I probably should have waited for 10.8.3! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc. It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem. I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference. I found one album with the "&". I edited that one. Still would not work. So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild. Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one. Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes. BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them. I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

My 10 year old son, who lives 300 miles away, has a new ipod touch.
I have an older 2nd generation touch
I do not have any other ios device. I have windows Xp on my PC and I do have Itunes.
Im wanting to set up an @me.com email address so that I can TEXT my sons new ipod touch...My ipod is set up with my gmail account, but when I send him an email to his @me.com email, it goes to his email inbox and not his text inbox... My son is young and he sees all his texts but not his emails, and Im to far away to show him..

I am not aware of any since the 2G does not support the Messages app. That app requires iOS 5 or above and the 2G can only go to 4.2.1. Further, I am not ware of any testing apps that are presently compatible with the 2G iPod.

Transfer songs from another ITunes on new computer onto shuffle 2nd gen

my old computer broke so am using another computer now, which has ITunes already on it, however my shuffle keeps saying its already synced to another computer so i can either transfer my songs to this new computer or erase and sync with this one. i;d like to keep the songs i have on my shuffle.
i just found out i cant unsync it (shuffles apparently are only ever synced to 1 computer, unlike other IPods can)
is there any way around this? i want to add more songs to my Shuffle but its synced to my old computer which doesnt work. i need help ASAP

You can recover the songs from the shuffle and put them into your new iTunes. Once you have done that you can sync the shuffle and link it to the new library. Retrieving songs from a shuffle is a bit different from retrieving songs from a regular iPod, for a shuffle follow this process:
1). On your Windows desktop go to Edit>New folder and add a folder to receive the songs from your shuffle.
2). Download SharePod from this link: SharePod
3). Connect your shuffle to your computer. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. Your iPod will connect but iTunes won't open, the hardware icon should appear in your Windows system tray.
4). Open Sharepod, it should have picked up the presence of your iPod and show all the songs on it.
5). Highlight all your songs in the program window (click on the first song in the list and hold down the shift key, click on the last song and all the songs in between will be selected).
6). Click Copy to PC (the icon is in the top left corner) and choose the folder you created on the desktop or simply drag the songs from SharePod to the folder: SharePod - Copying tracks to your PC
7). When all the songs have transferred close SharePod
8). Disconnect your iPod by right clicking on the hardware icon in your system tray: Safely Disconnect iPod
9). Check the desktop folder and make sure all your songs are there.
10) Open iTunes and go to File>Add Folder to Library, navigate to the folder on your desktop and add the songs.
11). Connect your iPod. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc. Choose "Erase and Sync", iTunes will reload your shuffle with the songs you recovered and link the iPod to this new library.

Here's a simple "How To" on downloading photos from a folder on your hard disk to an iPod:
1 Create a folder on your hard drive to hold the photos you want on your iPod. Call it iPod Photos for example
2 Drag the photos you want from your usual picture folder into the folder you just created
2 Open iTunes, select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
3 Click the Photos tab and select “Synch photos from.”
4 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select the iPod photos folder you created.
On a small device like the 2GB Nano I would tend to leave the "Include Full Resolution photos" box unchecked as these will take up a lot of space on the iPod and are only useful if you want to copy photos from one computer to another. iTunes will add "optimised", small TV quality versions of the photos to the iPod for you to view.

Too many problems with IOS 4 and 2nd gen touch

Ok, to be honest, I was happy for the update to IOS 4 but now, not so much. My battery life has been running down faster than it usually does, my clock jumps ahead in time no matter what I do, I lost tons of pics because of them being taken off and back on, and my update took forever to do. Any help on any of these things would be appreciated. Thanks

This may be related to a new feature embedded in iOS7 that shows all purchased music by default. Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music. See if the issue ceases once the feature has been disabled. This information is located on page 63 of the user guide below.

Your phone is too old to run Siri natively, though there are those who succeeded illegaly by jailbreaking.
Many also resent ever doing it after losing data or exposing their private information to scammers... :-)

Hi everyone, I need some help big time. I was currently running the IOS 6.0.1 on my iphone 4 and I could sync and transfer music to my phone via my iTunes account. But I updated my phone to the new IOS 6.1 and now I can not transfer music onto my iphone, all it does is tries to sync the songs but it doesn't. The release of iTunes 11.0.2 and iOS 6.1.2 for my iPhone 4, seems to have sorted everything. I can now sync music, films and photos between my MacBook and my phone.
I was dubious about blindly doing the updates but decided they couldn't really mess up any further functionality so I went for it and it's sorted now.
Look in to, and take the gamble, it's up to you.

If you have no luck with planb77's suggestion, perhaps you should check and confirm which iPod you have and that anything else you're doing, or thinking, is correct.

Look here for help in identifying your iPod; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 because the newest iPod Touch would require the latest version of iTunes. Are you using the latest version which, at the time of writing, is 10.6.3.25. A new iPod using an old version of iTunes would give you the symptoms you experience.

1. It is never a good idea to include personal info like your email address or Apple ID in a post on an open forum.
2. The email you received DOES NOT say your Apple ID cannot be used to unlock this iPad. The email informs you that your Apple ID was used to unlock an iPad. Fortunately the iPad is yours. The message confirms that. If your Apple ID was used to unlock an iPad that was not yours your would then know to change your password. Since the iPad is yours you do not need to change your password.

Update: my PC USB hub was connected to a USB 3 port, I connected the 30 pin cable directly to my PC, And the restore worked just fine. Restored phone from iCloud backup and seems to be working fine.
