Is it possible to attache an external GPU enclosure to iMac?

Hi,
Lately I saw couple of video clips on youtube for people who attach external GPU enclosure to MacBook Air and Pro to power these devices with more GPU performance by using thunderbolt cable.
I want to buy an external GPU enclosure and attach it to my iMac to play games on higher graphic performance. Is that possible?
Thanks,
Salah

They guy who made a YouTube clip about doing it only ever got it to work in windows not osx

  • Can I attach an external monitor to my iMac G5 (ALS) if the video card is dead?

I don't know for a fact that the video card is dead, but the screen on my iMac (PPC/ALS) 20" gradually started flaking out over several months and is now dead. Computer boots up fine and I'm looking at it through target mode right now.  I want to keep using the computer if I can, so I am wondering if I can attach an external monitor through the DVI slot even if the video card is kaput.  I'd like to get an opinion or two on this before I buy a used monitor and cable.  Thanks!

You have found the answer. If the video chipset is OK but there is a fault in the internal display or its cabing, an external monitor will work. However, if the video chipset--which is farther "upstream" in the system--goes bad, the option of an external monitor is off the table.

  • Is it possible to attach an external template for online preview?

    Hi All,
I need few details regarding BPA (Bill Presentment Architecture).
    Here is the requirement.
User have around 30 different layouts based on few codes.
These layouts (report) should be available for online view in AR transaction forms.
I tried using the external template and execute but only print preview was enabled for the external template.
Is there any way to enable to online preview for external template.
    Please help on this issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Trupti

I am using an external drive in the exact way that you described. You just keep it plugged in to the computer when you want to access the movies and files. In order to put files on it, just go to finder open up the drive under devices and drag and drop files onto the drive. It is just like using a usb drive with a terabyte of space.

  • W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if it would be possible to connect an external GPU trough the Express card adapter on my W540.I would use this devicehttp://www.banggood.com/EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-PCI-E-Graphics-Card-p-934367.htmlWith an AMD Radeon r9 280x+ external Monitor and power supply.(also the r9 280x uses PCI Express 3.0 would that be an issue?)My W540s processor is an Intel Core i7-4900MQ CPU @ 2.80GHzThanks!

It really depends on where you use it. I know many have made an issue of the glare screen.  I went and played with it at the local Apple store and decided I could make it work. By using lamps appropriately in my area, I don't have issues with glare. And I appreciate the clarity of the screen.
Now, if I were getting a laptop, I'd insist on the non-glare screen, because various environments are difficult to control. But in my office, I have easily made it work, and am pleased with the result.

  • Can you attach an external HD to the new iMac with a fusion drive?

I'm trying to decide how to configure the new iMac I am going to buy. Can you attach an external HD to an iMac with a fusion drive?  I'm assuming it would be fine, but since the fusion drive is new, I don't want a nasty surprise.   Some of the new Mac Minis now have fusion drives, so has anyone added an external drive to it?

This was a concern expressed in this thread: Worrying reply to Apples FAQ on new Fusion Drive
However, Apple has since amended the FAQ, clarifying their earlier Fusion confusion.
Therefore I believe the answer is yes, you can add an external USB HD. If Apple would only state that explicitly in this document, it would eliminate all doubt.

  • Possible to attach external Esata hard disk on the Imac Quadcore 27?

Is it possible to attach external Esata hard disk on the Imac Quadcore 27? Or any other Imac? The purpose is for video editing, but maybe Firewire 800 is good enough for hd video in Final Cut Pro?

    Hi Simen,
The iMac series do not have an ESATA connection and there isn't a way to make a connection inside. The only possible way is to perform surgery on the iMac which
    1. probably will not work and
    2. almost for sure Invalidate the warranty
This is a fairly common questions however there just isn't a way to do it. If your external drive also has a Firewire or Firewire 800 connection that is your best bet. As you probably know your iMac has a Firewire 800 port and you can daisy chain Firewire devices.

  • Is it possible to attach two monitors to a MBP using a displayport splitter?

    Hello community!
I have done quite a bit on research on this, but haven't found any recent and conclusive answers. My hope is to find a solution and have it documented for others seeking the same.
    Goal
I want to attach two external monitors to the miniDP/Thunderbolt port of my MacBook Pro using a DisplayPort (DP) splitter.
    Hardware
Macbook Pro, mid 2012 (non-retina), with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, Mavericks
2x DELL U2412M that support DVI,VGA or Displayport.
    What I know
My MBP should support more than two displays
There is a workaround using a USB adapter (my last resort)
There are Thunderbolt "Docking Stations" (e.g. from Belkin) providing several outputs, but don't know if any supports more than one display
DP supports multiple displays as of rev. 1.2 (daisy-chain)
    The U2412M
    (supposedly) supports DP rev. 1.2
works when attached with DP (tested on both units)
Thunderbolt is backwards compatible with DP (I think the DP signal is multiplexed on a thunderbolt connection)
I found a DP-splitter supporting multiple displays. However, Delock's support could not confirm it working with my MBP (they have no test units)
    What I tried
I purchased the DP-splitter and tried to connect both displays to the mac.
    Result
While there is a reaction initially, both monitors go into standby.
If I connect only one display to the splitter
    DP: works
mDP: Laptop display goes black several times (I suppose OS X is attempting to set up the display), before defaulting to the buildin screen only (Note: Connecting the mDP<->DP cable directly works)
MBP cannot boot if both displays are connected with splitter as WindowServer crashes (there are crash logs, if that would help)
It's possible, that the splitter's mDP port is defective. "My" store suggested bringing it in for replacement. As they are out of stock, however, it'll take a while for a replacement to arrive.
    Question / tldr
Has anyone successfully connected two displays to a single mDP/Thunderbolt port without using thunderbolt?
What DP revision does the thunderbolt port support?
Is there anything else I could try?

    Melophage,
Thanks for pointing out the PowerDesk software.
For the benefit of any other readers, here's a rough outline of it's functionality:
Divide 'virtual' desktop into sections. (allows maximising to both screens, a single one or even a division of a single screen)
Assign dock to a particular display (or span)
Swap active window and maximize it
Alas, there seems no way to assign the menu bar to a single display.
Quite interesting is the ability to divide a screen's desktop into sections. Applications can then be maximised in these sections, allowing for a "mission control" setup, where you can monitor several applications at once.

  • Is it possible to attach 2 monitors or TVs on a MacbookAir?

I've got a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go hooked up to double 24" monitors on my 13" MBA as we speak (over MiniDisplay Port). So it'll absolutely work. Thunderbolt will allow you to daisy chain devices over a single outbound wire, whereas with the Matrox setup you have a rather large box that interfaces between the displays and the machine. That's what is doing the heavy lifting and allows two (and even three) external monitors over a single MiniDisplay Port.
Very glad to hear this.  Is this a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go DP Edition?  I have the Digital Edition (which has VGA in and DVIx2 out) and with my 2006 MBP, I was able to use the DVI-VGA adapter, and get two 19" external monitors at 1280x1024 each (total rez 2560x1024) to work just fine.
I just upgraded to the new 13" MBA and got a MiniDisplay Port -> VGA adapter, hoping it would just work. But it doesn't.  The resolutions that are in the drop-down are for the most part all single-screen resolutions.  If I choose 2048x768, both screens fire up, but 1024x768 looks fairly horrible and I'd rather do just the single screen at 1280x1024.  But I sure am missing two screens right now
    Thank for your help.

  • Is it possible to connect an external camera via bluetooth to the Iphone 4 and use it with Facetime, if not.. why?

Is it possible to connect an external camera via bluetooth to the Iphone 4 and use it with Facetime, if not.. why?

Ok, in 2015 is it possible now? I would like to use an iPad and Face to share content between a dressmaker in Asia and a customer in the US, and I would like to attach better camera's than the built-in camera's on the devices.
Any thoughts? Any updates to the original post?

  • Is it possible to attach URLHandler for plugin

    Hi, Guys.
I notice Facebook plugin can accept external URL protocol via web browser.
    ( URL : lightroom://com.adobe.lightroom.export.facebook/%23access_token=147.... )
Is it possible to attach Custrom URLHandler for my plugin ?
I can't find any information about it.
If someone know about this, please let me know.
    Have a nice day.

The "lightroom://..." URL works fine in IE if I type it on the address bar, but it doesn't work (i.e. "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error) if it comes in from the internet via an HTTP 302 redirect response.  Per Matt's suggestion, I added the originating site to my "trusted sites" (and even threw in my "lightroom://..." URL for good mesasure), but still no joy.  I guess Rob is having success driving his plug-in from IE, because his stuff is all local (right, Rob?).
So, I'm still curious if anyone has had success using IE to respond to the "lightroom://..." protocol (or any custom protocol, for that matter) when the request originated from the internet.  Anyone?
    -Don
(p.s., if anyone's curious, here's a page describing how custom protocols are registered on Windows systems: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa767914%28v=vs.85%29.aspx .  )
Update: Using IE, I discovered that if a user clicks on a link in a remote web page that has a "lightroom://..." URL, or the remote web page contains a
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" CONTENT="0;URL=lightroom://... />
tag, it works.  IE (8 -- haven't tested others) is only choking on the HTTP 302 redirect.  :-(

  • Flex Pro 2 15 External GPU potential. Help Please!!!!

Hi guys and girls i have just purchased a new Flex Pro 2 15 and am quite happy with it (apart from windows 8 lol) but am at a slight loss with the graphics. Its ok being a Nvidia 840m but not quite powerful enough certain appliactions. So ive been doing some research about External GPU's and possibilities of it. My problem is im not sure as to whether it would be possible with this laptop at all regarding the internal PCIe, i know it is currently occupied by the wireless card but i dont mind removing this and having a USB device.Does anybody know whether it would be possible to run a GPU from this expansion? Many thanks in advance Ashley

    Bumps! any ideas guys

  • Is it possible to disable the dedicated GPU on Satellite L850

Is it possible to disable the dedicated GPU on the L850.
Through the BIOS or whatever, so that the laptop only runs on the integrated graphics on the CPU.
    Thanks

    Hi
What L850-xxx do you have exactly and what dedicated GPU does it support?
Notebooks which support an Optimus technology (with nVidia GPU) would switch automatically between the internal (Intel) GPU and the external nVidia GPU and this depends on running application.
In some case you could choose weather an application has to use internal Intel GPU or NVidia GPU.

  • Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display?

    Hello,
Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display and back up a MacBook Air to the external hard drive using Time Machine?
I intend to connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt cable.
I would also like to connect my printer via USB 2.0 to the Thunderbolt Display. Will this also work?
Effectively using the Thunderbolt Display as a USB hub or docking station.
    Regards,
    Ben

    Ok, thanks.
My 1 cable to ThunderBolt Display objective
MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable) -> Thunderbolt Display -> (via 1 x USB cable) -> USB 2.0 external hard drive
I would like to know if this configuration is possible and Time Machine will run correctly.
Your 2 cable suggestion (I think)
    MacBook Air -> (via 1 x Thunderbolt cable + 1 x USB cable) -> Thunderbolt Display + USB 2.0 external hard drive
This configuration requires 2 cables to disconnect/reconnect from my MacBook Air.

  • Is it possible to connect an external Graphics card to a 13" rMBP and use it within OSX?

Considering buying the new 13" rMBP with 8Gb RAM and wondered if I would be able to use an external GPU with OSX apps just to futureproof the machine for years to come as I will be using it for some light HD video editing at University away from home at the moment so getting a iMac or Mac Pro isnt practicle or economically feasable.

  • Possible to attach ethernet hub to AEBS?

    Dear All,
Does anyone know if it is possible to attach a (non-switching) ethernet hub to my 2009 (dual-antenna, 802.11n capable) Airport Extreme Base Station?  I've just wired my house up with Cat-5e and would like more than the three available ethernet ports, but want the AEBS to continue with all NAT/routing.  I'm reluctant to get involved with a second router and subnetwork, because in my experience that's a pain ...
    Thanks in advance,

I am not familiar with this particular device, but the link says that
This switch is a Plug & Play installation and no configuration is necessary.
So, if you take that at face value, the device is a switch.
The problem with this device is that you will lose performance. Your AirPort Exteme has 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN capability. The switch that you are looking at is only 10/100.
Suggest that you look for a 10/100/1000 or what is known as a Gigabit Ethernet switch. Netgear or Cisco products would be a very good choice.
