  • Is it possible to backup photos from IPHONE direct to a external Hard?

I would like to backup my photos within my iphones to an external hardrive directly, is this possible?

Some have succeeded in using a properly formatted flash drive as extra storage with an iPad, but haven't seen anything from a user succeeding with a hard drive.  iOS isn't really setup for that at this point, maybe someday if enough people give feedback.

  • Is it possible to do a direct transfer of photos from iphone 4s to ax external hard drive?

I would like to be able to free up space on an iphone 4s. Too many photos on there to be stored on icloud.  I was thinking of buying and external hard drive to store the photos onto.  Is it possible to do it directly without using a computer?  If so is one hard drive better than any other? Any replies in simple english, as I am not a tech savvy, would be very apprecitated.

In general, most external hard drives out there do not support what you need to do what you want.  I have read about a very few which support connecting to them via wifi, but I do not know if they will work for what you want.  The iPhone (or iPad for that matter) does not support transferring pictures other than via sync or via iCloud.  You may be able to get it to work using something ele, but it will be kludgy and might not work after the next iOS update.  THis is probably not what you are looking for in the long term.

  • I am having trouble on transferring photos from iPhoto to my Seagate External Hard Drive

Im new to Mac and I was doing fine with my new laptop but somewhere along the way I have reach to a point where I cant continue my work. I am having trouble on transferring photos from iPhotos to my Seagate External Hard Drive, even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air. I am getting really upset and frustrated; so I'm out of ideas.

even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air.
What is the file system on that drive? Is it formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
And what is your iPhoto version? iPhoto 9.5.1?
Some how I have trouble trying to drag my photos to my drive and it is not letting me to do so
What exactly happens when you try to drag photos to your drive? Are you dragging from iPhoto's window to the drive?
Can you export your photos, when you select the photos on iPhoto and use the command "File > Export"?

Do you want to copy some pictures to the external drive, or do you want to move your whole iPhoto library? The latter will free up hard drive space on your start up disk; the procedure is explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506
Note this is not the same as a Time Machine backup.
If on the other hand you want to copy some photos from one drive to another, you can just drag and drop them from one location to another. This is a true copy, the originals will remain intact.

  • Can I archive photos from my iPad2 to an external hard drive?

I need to archive an ever growing photo album direct to an external hard drive - is it possible - how can I do it without connecting to my iMac?

You can't connect an external hard drive to the iPad, you will need to go via your computer. (There are some wifi drives coming onto the market, but I think that they only support streaming/copying to the iPad, not from the iPad.)
To copy photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from email/websites to your computer then see this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
To copy back photos that were originally synced from a computer then you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer (which has a free lite version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer) which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

  • Backing up photos from iPhoto 6 onto an external hard-drive

I have a PowerBook G4 with a 60GB hard-drive. I have well-over 5,000 photos in iPhoto that are eating up my HD space. I recently purchased a 250GB LaCie external HD so I could move stuff off of my PowerBook and store it on the external HD.
When I purchased my external HD at the Apple store, I inquired as to the best way to back-up my photos. The person there advised me to copy my iPhoto library and save the copy to my external HD - so it would preserve the albums, dates, etc. of the photos. So, I've been doing this periodically.
Here's the issue - the multiple copies of my iPhoto library are now eating up space on the external HD because each time I copy the library, it copies ALL of the pictures. So, with each copy of the library, I'm saving another copy of the majority of the pictures. So, I'm using space needlessly. I only need 1 back-up of each picture.
So, I wandered back into the Apple store and asked if there was a better way to do this... The Studio Pro person advised me to use "Back-up" the software .Mac users can get... So, I downloaded the software, and selected the 8 or so iPhoto library copies I have on my external HD hoping that it would combine them into 1 library and not keep any of the duplicates. Contrary to what the Studio Pro person said, the back-up didn't eliminate the duplicates. It took my 8 back-ups and combined it into 1 file.
What I'd like - 1 big back-up of ALL of my photos - but just 1 copy - in the iPhoto library format so I can easily find stuff. I would like to be able to delete old photos and photos I don't need all the time from my PowerBook but know that I have back-ups of them on my external drive that I can re-import onto my PowerBook when I need to. AND, I'd like to be able to have a way to do back-ups on a regular basis and have ONLY the new photos on my PowerBook moved into the back-up on the external HD.
Does this make sense? Can anyone help?
    Thanks!!!

Hey man I hear your pain. I have used retrospect for backing up all of my stuff and it works really nice. I would suggest you use the same thing. It does alot of what you are looking for but it also backs up your whole computer. It looks for new files and old files and goes from there. I would highly recommend this program: Retrospect!!

  • I transferred photos from iphoto to a Seagate external hard drive and now I cant access the photos

When I plug in the hard drive to my macbook, I can see the iPhoto folder but it tells me that it is not accessible since Time Machine is running.
All I want to do is pull a few pictures off of the hard drive.  So frustrating!  Any help is greatly appreciated!

I tried turning ogg Time Machine but I am still unable to access any photos.  The actual message that I receive when I try opening iPhoto on the hard drive is 'You can't open the application iPhoto because it is in a Time Machine backup.'  Am I trying to open the wrong thing?  I have looked for photo files but didnt find any.  Thanks for your help!

  • How do it import from my camera to an external hard drive?

I am working on a Mac and have a new Nikon D7100. I am fairly new to Lightroom and am using Lightroom 5. I am having problems importing photos from the camera to an external hard drive. I am able to import directly to my internal hard drive but when I try to import to the external one I receive an error stating, "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (44)" and then a list of all the images I am trying to import. I have checked my external drive and there does not seem to be any issues with it. Any experience you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks DJ! I didn't know this could be an issue but I see now my external drive is read only on my Mac.

    Hello Lakshminarayanafromgbr,
    Welcome to Apple Support communities.
I have attached several articles relating to copying photos to your Mac from your iPhone. The first is importing directly from the phone to the Mac. The next two are on setting up and using Photo Stream through iCloud.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • My hard drive crashed on my apple computer recently. I have a new one, but it won't sync with apple tv1, and I want to retrieve my photos from teh appletv1. It appears in devices now, but won't let me go any further with it. Help

The hard drive crashed on my apple computer and I lost a lot of photos. I want to recover them from my apple tv1, but the computer won't seem to pair up with the apple tv. The Apple tv does appear in devices, but it won't let me go any further. The 'apply' button is a pale grey colour and you can't click on it. Help!!

there is no facility to recover your photos from the appletv.
the only way to link the appletv to your new "system" is to remove the existing itunes link and then link it to the new itunes - this will delete all content from the appletv though.

how to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.
