Is it possible to display artist's albums in chronological order instead of alphabetical?

Afternoon rockmyplimsoul, thank you for the info on changing the sorting order - one question though how do you do this on the iPod ?
Even if your artists are sorted in the library in chronological order by release date, which is cool,  when its transferred to the iPod it still gets sorted in alphabetical order. This is frustrating as I like to listen to one artist's music in order of release date, which I cant because its in alphabetical order.
Can you assist please.
Thank you
PS: Config- Thinkpad W510 i7 8GB, Win 7 Pro 32
                    iTunes 11 latest release
22000+ Songs stored in Library in WAV format encoded from original CD's

Is it possible to have podcasts being played in chronological order instead of reversed chronological order in an iPod Classic? It is not an issue, just something that irritates me as I want to be able to listen to them in chronological order.

Yes, but you need to make a custom playlist to do so. There is no option on the classic to reverse the playback order.

I am sorry that I ran afoul of the user guidelines, I'll remove the rant if I can.  I certainly did not intend my  gripe to target the helpful responder.  And yes, I did provide the feedback to Apple.  I'm just used to such feedback going into a "black hole".  Which this almost certainly does because this problem has existed for years (I Googled for an answer first.)  However, it should be noted that company's tend to respond to feedback that is very public if they want to keep a good name in the business.  The private feedback through the program is like a quiet whisper, only the two parties involved know about it, so there is no real incentive for prompt action.

  • Albums in chronological order?

Is there any way to get your albums in iTunes to go in chronological order instead of alphabetical (and also to get my iPod to sync this way?) Right now I have the album tags set so that it has the year before the album name (ie
"{2003} Interventions And Lullabies" and "{2006} Dog Problems") and it really is getting on my nerves. Any way I can fix this? Thanks

It won't sync that way... I too thought of retagging all my albums, or using sort fields, but I still want them to come up in alphabetical order when I choose Album on my iPod.
What I want is to be go Artists-> Album -> Chronologically sorted albums by artist (there are few enough of these that I can figure out alphabetical order myself if i so choose)...
Anyone hear anything to do this?

  • Display artists in alphabetical order and albums in chronological order.

I have my iTunes library set to display artists in alphabetical order and albums in chronological order.  This is the sorting option preferred by every person I've ever spoken to about it.  The touble is nobody I've ever spoken to can tell me how to get my device (4S64, 5.1.1) to follow suit.  iTunes on my phone insists on listing albums alphabetically.  Since I (we) already know all the letters of the alphabet and in which order they occur this kind of sorting is of no benefit.  Somebody please put me (us) out of our misery and reveal whichever secret soft switch must be flipped to make this happen.  Also, if possible, I would rather do the alphabetical "Artist" sorting by last name rather than first but I have not seen an option for that either.
    Thank you in advance.

There is no secret soft switch for Album by Artist by Year on iOS.
If you want your artists sorted by last name first then edit the corresponding sort values.

  • Can't get albums in chronological order

I'm having an issue where I can't get the artists albums in chronological order. I have all the artist in alphabetical order but now I want their albums in year order. It looks like the albums are in alphabetical order. To give you an example...AC/DC is first...Back in Black (1980) is before High Voltage (1976). I know it probably sounds petty but it drives me crazy that its not in the correct order! lol... I did a search and couldn't find my answer thats why I'm posting. Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to force iTunes to follow true chronologic order?
iTunes only references the year of release for songs, not the month and day, so if an artist has two albums in the same year, they will be sorted alphabetically. You could change the year of one of them to force it to show up in the order you want. Not a perfect solution, but just an idea.

  • Putting Albums in chronological order?

I was wondering if there was a way to get iTunes to put the albums of the artists in chronological order, rather than alphabitical order. The way I like to have my CDs arranged in my CD case is alphabetically by artists, and if the artisits has more than one album, I want those in the order that they were released, and I just can't seem to find a way to do with with my music on iTunes. Suggestions?

Like you and PT, I also have my (physical) CDs sorted by artist and the albums in chronological order.
iTunes can only set to sort on one column, but sometimes sorting is done on multiple criteria, so iTunes is capable of sorting on multiple columns.
If you sort on artist or album and have tagged the tracks with track and disc numbers, iTunes will also sort on these criteria.
Unfortunately sorting on multiple columns by the user, is not implemented.

How do you arrange the albums in chronological order in iPhoto ? Madde 47

What do you mean your own albums that are in alphabetically order?
    How did you do that?
I didn't try to make that happen, but no matter how I re-arranged albums using MartyLightroom's suggestion (below now), all of the iPhoto synchronized albums appear only in alphabetical order.

  • Is it possible to play "Artists" by Album as opposed to alphabetical?

On my Nano I can select "Artist" and then play the Artist by Album.  On the iPhone 4S when I select "Artist" all of the albums are displayed.  When I select "All songs" the order of the songs goes alphabetical.  Is there a setting I need to chang to be able to play all songs by an artist in album order?

I have the same question, would be great if someone could shed some light on this.

  • Display Albums in Chronological Order in iPod

    Hi,
I was wondering why albums appear in alphabetical order by deafault in iPod and there's no way to organize them by year to display them in chronological order.
Perhaps there is a way to do so and I haven't figured it out yet (besides adding the year to the album name, i.e. naming 'A Hard Day's Night' -> '1964 A Hard Day's Night')?
Is there another way to bypass or alter iPod's method of organizing album lists?
I know there have been several discussions on the subject already but I haven't found any solution yet and I'm sure others are looking for one as well.
    Thanks in advance,
    David

yeah well thanks for your dismissive reply
    but I don't agree -
when you initially browse by "Artist" on the iPod,
then 'drill down', you are presented with a list of that
    Artist's albums.
Maybe I'm an anal aspergerated mentalist, but on my shelves
at home, I generally have my CDs in alphabetical order
by artist, and then within that, in release order.
It's logical and what I'm used to seeing.
When I go into my Kraftwerk stash on the iPod,
I don't wanna see "AUTOBAHN" first in the list cos it begins
with "A", I wanna see Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, Ralf und Florian, then Autobahn [substitute your own favourite artists here]
Moreover, never mind what I think, iTunes also thinks it's a useful way to display things,
since it already lets you do that - so why can't the iPod
do it too? it's all in the metadata...

  • Re-sorting albums in chronological order?

I used to have all my iPhoto '09 albums organized in chronological order, I just added a new one to the bottom every month or so.
Unfortunately, I did something and now they're all in alphabetical order:
    April 2008
    April 2009
    August 2008
    August 2009
    You get the idea.
How can I re-sort them into chronological order?

    do it manually
    or
rename them so the alpha sort works
    2009-08-31
    2009-08-21
    2009-07-04
    etc
There is no date sort - on alpha and it can not be undone

  • Is it possible to display artist name, song name and bit ra

I own a Zen Sleek Photo and would like to know if there are any plans for a firmware that enables the player to display song name, artist name and also bit rate at the same time. I know that it's possible to see the technical details of the songs but I think it would be nice to see them always (like artist name and song name).
Especially for songs with VBR that would be nice

Does anyone maybe have an idea? I really would like to see the bit rate displayed (permanently).

  • How can i get my albums to play in track order instead of alphabetical?

Ok heres the problem. I have got my music backed up an external harddive. Now if i look at album on my external and look at the songs they are all tagged with the track number, ie 01,02,03 etc for each album. When i drag an album into itunes the main library it copies the album from my external to itunes, it puts it in alphabetical order. I thought this is funny so i go to my music folder, itunes folder, itunes music folder, where musics kept and look in there. My albums in there but isn't tagged with the track numbers. For some reason when ive dragged my album from my external to itunes for some reason its got rid of the track numbers which is highly frustrating. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?
    Many Thanks.

If you click on the column headings in iTunes it will sort the tracks by the column you have selected.
Try clicking on the Album column, this should then put the tracks in the right order. You probably have the Track column selected which will keep the tracks in alphabetical order by Track name.

  • No Artist, No Album in iTunes, but they are always present on iPod?

    Hello,
Can't seem to find the answer in the archives - would be grateful for any help.
I organise all content by Genre and optionally by Composer, that is all.
The Artist and Album content of the Info box is completely blank. I do not even have the Artist and Album columns displayed in iTunes.
However after sync'ing the iPod, the Artist and Album fields are always on the iPod even though the content is blank.
This means, every time I select a new Genre I have to do a double click-thru to get to actual content of the Genre (Artists -> All -> Click -> Albums -> All -> Click -> finally... I am there.
I wonder why iTunes insists on inserting the Artist and Album fields on the iPod, even though the content is completely blank? ..and the columns are not even displayed in iTunes?
The double click-thru every time I need to change a Genre is irritating and impedes use of the iPod.
If anyone has any clues I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Chris,
Thank you very much for your reply. Sorry to be so late following up - there is a reason. In the meantime I have been trying to research the documents in more detail..
The iPod cannot display the info unless it is in the ID3 tags.
It doesn't matter if the columns are displayed or not in iTunes.
The problem may be the other way around. My problem is that the iPod always displays Artists and Albums, even though the ID3 tags are completely empty and these classifications are irrelevant to the content of my iPod. This causes me to have click through these irrelevant fields every time I select a new Genre.. time wasting and very frustrating..
If you have no info in these boxes, iTunes will put them in Unknown Artist, Unknown Album.
That's exactly what's happening but I'd dearly like to have categorised folders. I'm beginning to realise that iTunes may use the Artist and Album tags as a means of creating subfolders. In one of the documents it says:
"As a music manager, iTunes creates a folder for each artist in the iTunes Music folder and subfolders of each artist's albums that contain the individual song files"
But surely they can't force the use Artist and Album tags where these classifications are completely irrelevant? Just one example of many: I have a self-made 90-minute recording called "Nightingales in the Luberon". Now exactly what Artist and what Album does that belong under? The only reasonable classification I can see is under my "Nature" Genre.
Same with my Classical Genre - none of those recordings have any "Artist" or "Album". They all have a Composer ID3 tag, but apparently that doesn't help me at all in organising them according to folders?
Why not simply go to Music -> Songs?
Well, I think that's pretty much what I've been to do, except I need more organisation, so instead of just Music -> Songs I have been trying to do Music -> Genres. The problem is the iPod insists on plugging in the Artist and Album fields, after the Genres.
Or create a playlist which contains only one genre, then Music -> Playlist?
You can go into iPod Settings -> *Main menu* and put these on the iPod main menu so you don't even have to go to Music then another selection.
Thank you for the ideas. But at the moment I already have Genres at the very top level menu. But after going into a specific Genre, selecting it, I still have to click through the (irrelevant) Artist and Album tags.
I think what I am really asking for is the ability to specify which metadata tags are used to organise content, and sub-folders on disk. So far I have not been able to find anything in the documents.
The top-level tag should be Genre, with in some cases, a sub-level tag of either Composer, Author, or Publisher, depending on the type of Genre. I would like iTunes to create named hierarchical folders for each of these tags.
I have so many disparate types of recording that I think the only sensible type of classification is by Genre, for example: Classical, Country&Western, Factual, French (audio tuition), Nature (my own recordings), Old Times, Relaxation (audio), Self-Improvement (audio).
I think that Apple does not help by making much of the documentation obscure and non-intuitive.. I was searching for documents about 'Organising the iTunes Library' - a big topic surely. But I could find nothing. In the end I found part of the answers I was looking for in a bizarrely named document called "Bring in the Noise". Now what on earth does that mean??
Thanks a lot for your help..
