Is it possible to install Lion on a new MBP (non-retina)?

From what I can conclude, there doesn't seem to be any way to install Lion on a brand new MBP with Mountain Lion pre-installed (purchased today). I have the Lion installer but only for a MacPro, so presumably that won't work. Has anyone found a way to do this?

While it's probably unlikely to work, if you can find someone with the same generation MBP that shipped with Lion you can have them install Lion to an empty external drive and you can try booting from that. You will need the specific version of Lion to these system that cannot be downloaded from the App Store and currently must be installed from an Internet Recovery. If you can boot then you should be able to clone that to your internal drive and be on your merry way.
There is a little crossover where systems that shipped with ML will in fact boot Lion depending on when they were actually manufactured. Hopefully yours is one of them.

When baltwosaid NO emphatically, that was described as CORRECT ANSWER. Ditto in the caeses of the radically different answers from  Camelotand Matt Clifton
Could it be that CORRECT ANSWER needs better defining by Apple?
That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm

  • How to install Lion OSX on new SSD without install disc

    TL;DR
I need a way to install Lion on a new SSD without an install disc, and how to format it without a Mac.
Hello, just yesterday I opened up my MBP 13" Mid-2010 running 10.7.(4/5) (Not sure which it is, but I think it is 10.7.5) and the first thing I saw was Skype tring to sign in. It looked fine, untill I took a second look and I heard a strange clicking noise coming from my computer. The Sykpe signin page said "Disc I/O error" or something like that. I instantly knew there was something wrong with my hard drive. Tried rebooting, grey screen, strange clicking noise like most people with hard drive failure. I was devistated. It has worked minutes ago, then my brother gets off, I open it up,and the hard drive has failed. After I got over the initial shock, I googled "hard drive replacement" after searching for a while, I noticed most sites just showed how to UPGRADE your hard drive, cloning it and all. Well, heres my main problem. I had no time to clone. Luckily, I had started backup up a month ago, and all my data is safe on my external hard drive, but this is only a time machine backup. No OS. Now, most people can just put in their install disk and voila! But, I, sadly, do not have my install disk. No idea where it went, I just don't have it. So, I was wondering if there was any possible way to make a bootable USB or disk without having acsess to a Mac, or having to buy a disc. I bought Lion, and I'm hoping that there is a way to download this and put it on a USB, then boot my computer from it. Now, my second problem is formatting. I have no idea how to format my SSD, let alone without a Mac. If there is some way to format an SSD so that it will work with a MacBook Pro, that would be great.on a PC
IMPORTANT: No, I don't have ANY install discs, the only one I had, for Snow Leopard, is gone. And no, I don't have access to ANY Macs to format the SSD. Finally, I would really love to be able to do this all cost-free, as I have already purchased the Lion, and dont feel like buying a disc for it again.

    Yes. See below:
    Drive Erase for Lion/Mountain Lion
    1.  Wait until the Main Menu appears. This could take quite some time because you are doing all of this over an Internet connection. You should use Ethernet if possible. It's much faster than wireless. Select Disk Utility from the Main Menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select the SSD main entry (mfgr.'s ID and size.) Click on the Partition tab in DU's main window. Select One partition from the dropdown menu under Partition Scheme.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
After the above has completed quit DU and return to the Main Menu. Click on the Install/Reinstall OS X option then click on the Continue button.
You should be all set if there are no glitches.

  • Any ideas on how I install Lion on a new hard drive

Any ideas on how I might install Lion on a new hard drive when I purchased the OS online from Apple prior to my hard drive failing?       I don't have a disk.

when you install your new drive, what happens? it should boot into internet recovery and you setup from there.
    does it not do that?
here is an article about how to force internet recover http://www.cultofmac.com/106669/force-lion-to-start-internet-recovery-on-your-20 11-or-later-mac-os-x-tips/
here is apple literature about the recovery partition (if you had a hard drive) http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
here is a do it yourself downloader that makes a usb stick the recovery disk. If you have data on the usb drive I would back it up, as this will erase everything else on the thumb drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

It is probably broken. You can try restoring it using Recovery Mode, but if that fails its time for a new phone. After all, it is 4 generations out of date. See: Recovery Mode

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • Can I install my Aperture in new MBP

So i have Aperture in my current MBP. Can I also install it in my new MBP or do I have to buy it again?

If you want to have the software on both systems at the same time you must purchase another copy. Otherwise you must remove the copy of Aperture from your current MBP before installing Aperture on your new MBP. The license does not allow installation of a single copy on two laptops at the same time.

  • Is it possible to install Lion client on to a Mac mini server?

After seeing benchmark tests on the new Mac mini, the Mac mini server with the i7 processor is obviously much faster. But would there be any issue prohibiting the Lion client from installing on the Mac mini server instead of Lion server?

I'm afraid it's not possible. Or at least not easily. I've spent the last few days trying to do exactly that, as Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to sleep automatically unlike the client. I've followed all the Apple advice on how to 'remove' the Server components, but it's clear looking at a process list that there's still a huge amount of server stuff still there.
If you try to install a retail copy of Lion on the new hardware including 2011 Mini, it will refuse to boot from it - this is a deliberate and in my book completely unnecessary and unreasonable restriction by Apple.
And if you try to re-install Lion using Apple's internet recovery it gives you no choice which you get - it uses your machine details to decide unilaterally that it will reinstall Lion Server as that's what came with the machine.
The only final thing that MIGHT work - and I haven't tried yet - is to find a mate with a new 2011 Mini or Air, use that to do an internet recovery clean install to an external disk drive, then clone that clean install onto the Mini server. If that works, great, but why oh why did an otherwise excellent company like Apple make this so much harder than it was on ANY of their older hardware? It makes no sense at all. Someone should be fired for this nonsense.

  • Is it possible to install Lion Server over regular Lion?

I am considering buying Lion Server, so that I can get a feel for administering it (my background is in Windows Server and Warp Server for eBusiness).  I have a 2010 21.5" iMac, which I upgraded to Lion a couple of weeks ago.  I also have a MacBook Air with Lion.
I am wondering if I can just purchase Lion Server from the App Store and install it on my iMac, using the MBA as a client machine.
    (1) Is this possible?
    (2) Will I still be able to use the iMac as a regular machine, running (principally) Aperture and later on Final Cut Pro X as local programs
    (3) What likely pitfalls am I going to encounter, and what (other than the client services) will I gain?  I'm thinking that hosting Podcasts might be useful, but I don't know much about it
    and finally,
    (4) What resources are there to help me migrate my skills from Windows Server?
    TIA,
    Thomas

The other option is boot from your restore partition use diskutility to add third partition then use the reinstall lion option to install lion on 3rd partition, this will then download lion for you and reinstall it!
When this is done you can set it up properly (static ip etc) and then download the server app and install it!
Depending on what you want to do running it as your machine is not a big problem it works fine just keep in mind you might need to restart a few times and if you using it as a server that could be an issue!
in order to boot from your restore partition just reboot and hold down <alt>

  • Is it possible to install lion on a partition of my iMac, and leave Leopard on the computer too.

I am curently running Leopard and would like to keep it on my iMac due to bits of installed software that I'd like to keep from becoming incompatible, but I'd also like to have OS X Lion on there too so that I can enjoy some of the benefits this has to offer. So my question is, am I able to partition my hard drive and install Lion on a separate partition, so that I can boot Leopard or Lion depending on which I need to use at the time?

    Yes.

  • How do I install Lion on my new iMac from a recovery thumb drive?

Anyone know how to install Lion from a recovery copy? It's made from the copy on my MacBook Pro on a thumb drive.

Are you saying that you copied your system or installer from your laptop onto a thumb drive?
Please be specific: you really can't copy the recovery partition by itself because it's hidden - you can use Apple's recovery assistant to create a bootable startup on a thumb drive with which you can boot your system and then download/install. But, I believe that method requires the same machine ID to work.
IF you have the full installer, you need to boot up from another drive (the installer may not be bootable) and then direct it to another Mac.
So where do you want to install it? And exactly what is it that you have on that thumb drive?
If you just want to install Lion on another Mac, you can simply download a fresh copy from MAS.

  • Credit to install Lion on my new MacBook Pro?

So, I bought my MacBook Pro a couple weeks ago and decided to swap hard drive to SSD; as a result, I just received my laptop yesterday.  I was told at the time of my purchase I would receive a credit to install Lion however, I haven't seen anything in the package, and don't see any credit on my Apple Store account.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to how I should proceed?
    Thanks!
