Is it possible to retrieve a deleted file that wasn't placed into the Trash can?

I created a new Word document and was going to submit it to a Subversion repository using the Versions application.
However I accidentally deleted it from within Versions. Versions did not place it into the Trash Can after deleting it, and as it was a new document it is not yet under version control and so cannot be retrieved from the repository.
Is there anyway I might be able to retrive it?
(I've asked the same question within the Versions Google support group but posting here while/if I get a response from there. Wondering if there are any OS X specific techniques/tools I can use if Versions doesn't provide the ability).

Did you try to open this file in Word for editing and saved the modified file under the same name?
If that is the case then you should always use Save as to save the file under a different name and in another folder.
If that wasn't the case then you should have kept the file unless other (cleanup or anti-virus) software has removed the file because Firefox wouldn't remove files that weren't saved to temp folder.
There are other things that need your attention.

  • Recovering files that have been emptied from the trash

Is ther any way to recover files that you have sent to the trash, which you have subsequently emptied? Third party software? I accidentally trashed my entire iphoto library.
    B&W G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

If your photo library is on your startup volume, and if you've continued to use the startup volume since deleting the files, then your chances of recovery may be very small. Once files are deleted the operating system may use the space occupied by the deleted files when it writes new data to the drive. The more new data written to the drive the greater the probability that your old files will be overwritten. Once overwritten they cannot be recovered.
If you hope to maximize recovery then you need to immediately shut the computer off or boot from a different drive and stop using the drive on which the deleted files are located.

  • How can I delete time machine backup folders moved into the trash from an external drive?

I made the mistake of moving Time Machine backup files into the trash, but I can't seem to delete them. I tried the option key when clicking on "Empty Trash" and "Secure Empty Trash" (before and after rebooting), but that always led to error 8003. The files won't allow me to change their name. Using approchaes to Terminal from three different Mac-related webpages also failed. I also tried Trash It, but it seemed to be making little progress after letting it run 48 hours. Any other suggestions before calling Apple?

Assuming these were not backups made over a network (thus not in a sparse bundle disk image), see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
But any way you empty the trash on that disk/partition is probably going to take a very long time -- there's no doubt several hundred thousand files there, perhaps a million or more.
You may have to just erase the disk (with Disk Utility) and start over.
You really shouldn't have to delete Time Machine backups, as it will do that automatically when the destination gets full.  But if you really want to, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

Entire folders and files disappear from my Creative Cloud folder and they get moved to the trash can. Is there a reason this keeps happening? How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Ok, so this sounds like we need to investigate further to the cause of the deletes. Please send em your log files.

  • Using automator to delete files with out moving them to the trash

My boss and I work for a school district and we have been fight the ever losing battle of keeping kids from using usb drives and ipods on the computers. We have it fixed on the server accounts so they can't. But the local accounts they can do as they please. So we have found the files that we need to remove Example ( IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext, IPodDriver.kext, ITunesPhoneDriver.kext ) I have tried to use automator to delete these files by creating an application. Well it can't remove them because its need sudo access. So no im trying to figure out how to create a apple script to do so. I know once the files are removed the machines needs to restarted. So im not sure how to include a restart command too.
Any help on how to get this working would greatly appreciated. We have over a 600 machines to do this to. I know that there maybe mixed feeling about removing these functions but we have to fallow our board digital computer policy Primarily ever since the RIAA has been cracking down.

Hi Northridge, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    I'd use the Terminal...
In Terminal type man mv & man reboot
You can execute those commands preceded by sudo, like...
    sudo mv /Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext /Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext.old
This one just renames it, but you could move it wherever you want.

I accidently trashed and emptied my password folder and my itunes library., Is there any wat to recover the info - thank you

In the future consider keeping backups.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • I am being asked for my password every time I delete an item, but nothing is going into my trash can. Can this be resolved please?

Every time I delete something I am asked for my password, which is very annoying.  The deleted items are no longer going into my trash can, but are completely wiped from my computer!!  Is it possible for a non-computer literate everyday user to re instate the trash can to its original function?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Can i retrieve a deleted file when my Trash is already empty????

    hey guys,
i need your help!!! Can i still retrieve an important file, that i accidentally deleted, when my Trash is already empty??? please please help!!! is there any way that i could retrieve the file???

    Hi leecastasus;
First thing is to stop using the Mac. The more you use the Mac the greater your chances of overwriting the deleted file.
Get a demo copy of Data Rescue II. The demo will tell you if it can recover the file for you. If it can then you must pay for it to do that actual recovery to another disk.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
