Is it possible to set up my iPhone 5 as a new phone and sync ONLY my contacts and apps from my iPhone 4?
Is it possible to set up my iPhone 5 as a new phone and sync ONLY my contacts and apps from my iPhone 4? Or do I have to set up my iPhone 5 by using my iPhone 4 backup (I'd rather not)?
Contacts are not stored in a backup, so a restore will not bring them in. Contacts, along with all the other Apple databases (log into icloud.com with a browser and look at the various pages - this is what I call the Apple databases) are contained in their own locations on the servers. You should be able to take a new device, go to Settings>iCloud, log in to the icloud account, then turn on the services (e.g. contacts) you want to sync. They will then be synced to the device. That has nothing to do with a restore and with the old iphone 4. As for apps, their listing and locations on the screens are stored in a backup. If you don't restore, then go to the itunes app store, look under Purchased Apps and download them again.

i have a new iphone 5c replacing my iphone 4s. I backed up my 4s info on iCloud and then activated the new phone and downloaded from iclould. I then erased all info on my old 4s. However, I still can't get cellular service on my new phone. help!
Keep powering your phone off and back on, it can take up to 2 hours for a normal service provider to finalize the activation process. When you got your new iPhone (congrats by the way) you should have received a little bubble that appeared that told you when the phone was activated, did you see that?

My boss has an IPhone from a different carrier than my iPhone. I want to set up iMessage so we can text each other for free. Is that possible? If so, what do I do to my phone and/or hers to set it up?
Just turn on iMessage... Settings > Messsages > iMessage > On
Note that iMessage uses data (very small amount) so you need a cellular data (3G/4G) or wifi connection for iMessagae to work. Also, in the Messages app, iMessages are blue and standard text messages are green. -
ITunes consistently thinks my iPhone is a new phone and wants to set up as new
I have had an iPhone 4S for 4 weeks and have had every other iPhone since 2007. I plug my phone in regularly to my computer and change the content that is synched to it. Something happened yesterday, however, that makes iTunes think it's a new phone every time I plug it in -- instead of the usual media selection tabs at the top, iTunes gives the "Set Up New Phone" dialog with the option to restore a backup. I have restored from my most recent backups, erased and restored, and today even got a replacement from the Apple Store, all to no avail. There is some file on the phone that makes it appear to iTunes as a new phone and it won't give up.
I have now restored from an October 14th backup and I get the options back, but obviously lose a good bit of stuff that I'd really like to have had. It has been escalated through AppleCare to engineers, but it could take a couple days to hear from them. Thoughts are welcomed and I'm not afraid to get messy with some files :-)Do you mean that you bought a new iPhone and are trying to sync it with iTunes, or that you restored your iPhone and are trying to set it up as a new phone? In either case, iTunes will recognize the phone as being new. If you actually bought a new iPhone, you can't change how iTunes recognizes the phone. There is no personal data on the phone because it's new, so it will need to be set up as a new phone with iTunes.
If you restored your iPhone and chose to set it up as a new iPhone, but no longer want to, you will probably be able to go back and choose to restore it from a backup with either iCloud, if you set it up, or iTunes. If not, you can try to do a restore from iTunes if it's available after the phone is set up, or while you're setting it up.
I hope that's not confusing. What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Hope this helps. -
I recently lost my iphone 4 and have an iphone3 on loan until I get upgrade in Aug. I want to sync my data - contacts most important - from my itunes account...is this possible? Is it possible to change the user ID on the borrowed phone to my ID?
There are no contacts in itunes.
Your contact should be on your computer in whatever program you have selected to sync. Just sync them to the new one.
Click Support at the top of this page, then click manuals
Changing the itunes account on nthe iphone is covered there as is restoring the iphone as new or from backup. -
Hi, I have recently upgraded from and Iphone 4 to 5. I completed a back up on my iphone 4 via icloud which went ok. When setting up my new phone I selected to set up as a new phone and not via icloud back up. Is there anyway I can restore my details to my new phone? Thanks Hayley
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install any updates available.
Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from. -
I did set up the password when I got the phone and iPad months ago but never turned it on. Now it is asking for the passwords for both my iPhones and iPad and I cannot select not the have the passwords active.
If you do not want to use passcodes, why don't you just go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock and delete the passcode and set the lock to OFF. That will eliminate the problems all together.

Still trying to seperate hubby's iPhone contacts and apps from mine!
Still trying to seperate hubby's iPhone contacts and apps from mine! Read all the previous messages, did everything suggested, have two entirely different accounts, two names, two passwords, etc.
Can't use two different computers to sync because he's not ... patient enough to handle it. So It's my job to do both his and mine.
Would it work to sync his to the cloud and mine to my computer? Would that seperate them? Divorce is a possibility. Any other suggestions are welcome. calls to the Geniuses have gone unanswered.Restore your iPhone with the backup for your iPhone or as new.

Help please.
Connected my current iphone to i tunes. it syncd old contacts from previous job and previous phone to new phone and deleted all my new ones. tried to do back up from earlier restore in i tunes but there only seem to be back ups from my old phone not the new one prior to its first sync...thanks for your reply and input but, Im not sure if it was former or latter that I did, however I do know that I named this latest i phone differently and would have been OK with and expected expected old contacts to be added to the new ones I have recently added directly onto the new phone since I have had it rather than just the old one. I did try the undue/ unsync but this just seemed to remove all the old backed up ones just added leaving contacts empty? Clearly its my error, but what can be done to restore setting back to time before I connected today? earlier reset points on itunes show as 2 years ago and relate to old phone.

I purchased an audiobook from iTunes On my iPhone. I got a new phone and after the back up, the books I downloaded were not there. iTunes wants me to repurchase the books I downloaded. Is there a way for me to Redon load my already purchased books?
Hi..
On your new iPhone tap Settings > Store.
Make sure Books is turned ON.
You shouldn't need to re purchase the book > Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store -
Is there a way to transfer all the music and apps from an iphone to a computer with a new hard drive
I've had a new hard drive fitted in my laptop and i wanted to know if there is a way that i could tranfer my music and app from my iphone to itunes on the computer?
Yes, the Mac can read NTFS drives, but not write to them.
If you have the drive formatted FAT or exFAt then the Mac can read and write to it. But before formatting, remove the data as it's erased, and format it on the PC as it's easier. Right click on Windows and Format.
Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's
Moving your personal data via the external drive is likley the best option, there are other methods like Migration, but they are problematic and take a long time, a drive is simple, fast and direct. -

I need a new phone and iPod, would I be able to use an iPhone as a phone and iPod, without having to purchase the internet date plan?
You cannot do this. iPhones have to be activated with a service plan before any of the features, including the iPod features can be used.

I just bought a new iPhone and accidentally backed it up with my old iPhone backup, I do not want this. I lost everything on my new phone and I need it back. PLEASE HELP! This includes pictures and texts, etc.
So just to be clear, when you say "just bought" how long ago was that? Is it on this new iPhone that you had pictures, texts, etc that you want? Were you backing up to iCloud or onto iTunes?
This may not help for everything but if you go to iCloud.com and log in, are you able to find your pictures there?
