Is it possible to tweak OSX into accepting a normal microphone?
Hi,
as an avid gamer with a gaming PC besides my Macintosh, I've acquired a number of headsets over the time, such as a very decent Sennheiser. I can dual-boot my iMac into Windows and use that headset without any trouble. Booting back into OSX i'm left hung to dry. Why is that?!
Obviously this is some flaw in the decision making process at Apple. No idea what they're trying to cram down my throat here, but i'm annoyed. This is very obviously not a matter of hardware, but of software. Does anyone know of a piece of software that will allow me to correct this age old flaw in Apple's thought process? Perhaps some system properties/defaults that can be tweaked? Or a plugin of sorts?
Like a sermon this gadget is thrown onto everybody who has this problem. Why should I spend money to fix a obviously well working input port because some developer @ apple's with a sound fixation broke it? Sorry, no.
What I'm looking for is a fix for the problem, not an expensive workaround.

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. Is it possible to uninstall OSX?
I recently had to install Leopard on an external hard drive so I could boot my Mac and fix a problem with my internal hard drive - mission accomplished.
Now my problem is that I really don't want to keep OSX on the external drive - but there is other data on the external drive that I do want to keep and of course I have nowhere else to store this data at the moment. Thus reformatting the drive is not an option.
So, is it possible to uninstall OSX from my external drive or is reformatting the drive the only way to get rid of OSX?You can dump the /System directory, but there are a bunch of invisible directories on the root that will still be taking up a good deal of space on your machine. /var, /usr, the mach files etc. are just a few. There is no OS uninstaller that I know of, Apple doesn't have anything built into their install disc other than options for wiping or reformatting a hard drive.

is it possible to download OSX lion when I have it already installed on my new Imac?
I would like to have a backup in case I have to rebuild it.The only way to do so is to install Snow Leopard on another computer. However, there is a way to "snag" a reinstall download. See Downloading Hardware Specific Lion Installers. It's a little tricky but the process does work. Once you've snagged the download you can create a bootable USB flash drive. Ignore the download instructions. Focus on Steps 2 on following.
Make Your Own Lion Installer
1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that you can use without having to re-download Lion. -

If you are after the text, open it in Preview and copy the text and paste it wherever you want, or open it in Adobe Acrobat Pro and convert it into a Word .doc.

I have run my TC on a 12V SLA battery.. which would neatly meet that part of the functionality you want. But it is heavy and not really the rugged sort of device I think you want.
But I would look at other media players and other ways of storing movies than iTunes.. if you want to carry the whole lot around with you .. A bunch of SD cards even you could plug into the ipad??

A small cheap PC/Mac laptop with a 1TB hard disk in it.. and 11" or 13" screen.. can often be a much better solution than lugging around multiple items so you can fit Apple devices into your life. -

The 1st message goes on to say, "Please make sure that you have the latest version of Firefox from http://www.firefox.com." Assuming 4.0.1 is the latest version, it seems this is a bogus message and I haven't clicked on the link.
The 2nd message goes on to say something like, "if this continues [the attempt to trick Firefox into accepting an unsecure update], contact your network administrator."
I started getting the messages on all 4 of our PC's (2 desktops running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 1 running XP 32-bit, & a laptop running Vista Home Basic 64-bit) after updating to Firefox 4.0 on them. I manually updated to 4.0.1 on all thinking that would stop the messages, but it hasn't.
I loaded & ran free versions of McAfee Stinger, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Super Anti-Spyware programs on all our PCs; each program found & repaired some infected files on each computer, but the messages continue on all.

Is it possible to enter events into a specific iCal calendar, then print a list of those events with the name and date on a single sheet? I don't need the calendar grid. I just want a list of events on a particular calendar, and their dates. Is that possible?
Not easily. Two possibilities:
1) If all the events have some common feature (eg you have included "XXX" in all the summaries), search for that feature then select and copy the found items at the bottom of the window. You can then paste them into TextEdit or a spreadsheet for printing
2) You could write an Applescript to locate the events and write them into a text file for printing.
The first one will probably give you what you want. -

You should be fine. Just make sure that you download and install the P2 drivers for your PB. Also, if possible transfer directly to your external. P2 cards can eat up a lot of space very quickly and you don't want to overburden your system drive.

If you are in America then you can download your past iTunes music purchases via the store (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519). But no, you can't import from flash drives (the camera connection kit can only import photos and videos) or from an iPhone.

Is it possible to integrate AUR into Apper?

At the moment I use pacman and AUR as they suppose to be used (at least thats what I try!) to update and manage my software. Now out of curiosity I installed Apper as GUI for software management. There's two things I don't understand:
- Is it possible to integrate AUR into the Apper software sources? Is there a plugin or something?
- I see there's many different software management backends for RPM or tools like Portage ... can these be used in conjunction with the arch default APT? I understand that almost everything can be found within the AUR and that this is the better way but as I can't integrate it into Apper (see my question above) I wonder whether using other sources and formats could be an alternative ...

Some AUR helpers can mange packages from the official repos too https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_Helpers , so you can use a single frontend, but I don't know if apper can do that.

The only way I see this would be possible is through using JS that you can insert using the Object -> Insert HTML option, you may grab the XML to HTML code from here - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_to_html.asp
In order to test this out, simply download the sample XML file from the following location - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/cd_catalog.xml and save it somewhere locally. Now add this file to your Muse project using File -> Add Files for Upload option, it would then appear within the Assets panel.
Add the code to your page and update the path referencing the file cd_catalog.xml to assets/cd_catalog.xml. Now on previewing the page in browser, you should see the populated HTML from the XML.
