When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it

  • How do I get my purchased movies from iTunes to show in my Library without storing all the GBs on my hard drive?  [I want to show the Cloud Purchases.]

    Hey Hey!
Running OSX 10.9.4 and iTunes 11.3
I am pretty sure that this has been addressed somewhere, but I could not find it - so thanks up front!!!
How do I get my purchased movies from iTunes to show in my iTunes Library without storing all the GBs on my hard drive?  I want to show the Cloud Purchases without having hundreds of GBs taking up my HD space.
    Thanks!

    Deborah,
You cannot import contacts from your Nano to your PC via iTunes.  The syncing process is only one way.  However, if you enable disk mode on your iPod, open it up in a Windows Explorer window, you should see a Contacts folder.  From there you can copy them back over to your PC.
Even though this article is talking about adding contacts to the PC, it should walk you through some of the steps mentioned above.

I moved from an old macbook to a new one.  I have installed Office for Mac 2011. I copied all my files from my old notebook onto a hard drive.  On trying to setup my mail, i went into my hard drive and accessed microsoft user identities, office 2011 and it shows the database but wont let me select it.  Its almost as if the file is there but not accessable.  I desperately need to access my old mail.  How do I do this?  I am fairly confident that I copied all files off my old notebook.  Is there a way for me to search for the Database file?  Maybe I copied it to a different location?  Urgent help please.

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

When I right click on an image, then went to Go to Folder in Library, it pulls up the new external hard drive where I made the new link. When I try to work on the photos, the image still says file image is offline or missing. When I right click on the image to Show in Finder, it says the image could not be used because the original file could not be found. I eventually did click on their locate and found the image. When I linked those two together, a few minutes later ALL the "?" went missing and now IT WORKS!!!!
    That was weird!

  • How to backup files onto external hard drive if my MacBook's graphics card is broken?

    Hello,
I have a 15" 2012 Macbook pro with 2gb of ram, i7 processor, and a 250 gb Hard drive. In the middle of using my computer, the screen went black. Upon rebooting the computer, I noticed gray and white horizontal lines running across the screen, but I was still able to see the apple logo and loading indicator in the background. As soon as the login screen appeared, the screen went black again.
    Genius Bar Diagnosis:
A few days later I took my computer to the apple store to have them diagnose the computer to determine if the hard drive was corrupt or if it was just a display issue. They found that the hard drive was still functioning properly, so no information was lost. The problem was that the graphics card needed to be replaced. So they offered to ship my laptop to an Apple repair facility in Houston, Texas (nearest one to me) and replace the graphics card, as well as any other parts that seemed to be damaged, for a flat rate of about $315. They recommended that I back up my hard drive just in case they found an issue with it (despite nothing showing up in the diagnosis at the genius bar) because the technicians at the repair facility will just swap it out for a new one.
    My dilemma:
The employee at the genius bar gave me a list of Apple Authorized Service Providers that could help transfer the data from my macbook's hard drive to an external hard drive. I got a quote from them for $150, plus I would have to pay for a new external hard drive because my other one is full. In an effort to save money, I want to see if there is a cheaper way for me to backup the hard drive by myself. I have a pc laptop that still works fine, so I have been using that since my MacBook Pro died on me. Is there any way I could use that other computer to somehow backup my macbook's hard drive? Or would I need another mac to do the transfer? I have looked into buying a hard drive sled, but I don't know how those work, and I may not have all of the right equipment for it. If that is something I have the right tools for, and it's cheaper after buying all the accessories, then I would much rather go that route than taking it in to get serviced at an AASP store. Please help!
I'll give good ratings to those who give me useful advice.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Want to load excel data into oracle table with out changing it to CSV

    Hello all,
I have a requirement in dumping excel data into oracle database table without changing it to CSV file and this has to be used in normal sql/plsql environment i.e., pkg/procedure cant be used in the forms also...
so, can u guys can help me out in this
    thanks.............

The link Pavan provided discusses Oracle Heterogeneous Services. This allows you (using ODBC) to create a database link from Oracle to a non-Oracle data source like Excel. This would allow you to query the Excel data source from SQL*Plus or any other client tool. But that is probably going to require that your Oracle database is running on Windows since I'm not aware of any Excel ODBC drivers for Unix.
Another potential option would be to write a Java stored procedure that parsed the file. There are a few different Java libraries that can read and write Excel data files. You could load one of those libraries into the database's JVM and then write Java code that parsed the file. You would then be able to call your Java stored procedure from PL/SQL.

  • Copying VHS to DVD to hard drive

I used my DVD recorder to copy old home videos from VHS tapes onto DVDs. I was then hoping to copy the DVDs onto my hard drive. Is there anyway to go about doing that? I was able to play the DVD on my macbook, but can't figure out how to save it to the hard drive.
    Thanks!

    Download and install the following:
    VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
    Handbrake - http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Insert your DVD, close the default DVD player, open handbrake, set the source to your dvd, select the encoding type you want, let 'er rip.

  • Error when copying songs from cd to hard drive

When I switched from a windows computer to a mac, I copied all of my itunes songs on to a data cd. When I insert the cd into my mac and try to copy the songs onto my hard drive, I get an error saying "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". I am pretty sure that you can copy as many songs, to as many computers as you want, but you can only authorize five computer to play the songs. Why is this error popping up? and How can I copy my songs?
    Thank You, Margaret

    "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"
This means the data on the disc is not correct (a bad burn). Try again.
Do you have an iPod or a USB stick.flash drive? You can transfer files that way.
I would not recommend burning them to an audio CD.
The songs were originally converted to AAC, thereby losing data (quality).
Wif you burn to an audio CD and then reimport as AAC, you will again lose data (quality).

  • When i export my videos from iphoto onto my hard drive, they have today's date instead of the date the video was taken.

how can i fix this? i sync iphoto with my iphone but when i export the vids onto my hard drive, i lose the date the vids were taken. help?

thank you for your response. strange, though, the vids used to export with the file date that i shot the vid... it's only since i updated iphoto that this is happening. but i like your idea of adding the date to the file name... i just wish i didn't have to do that extra step now, since i have a lot of videos.

  • Hard Drive Shot - 2nd Time!!

In August of 2007, I got a MacBook to use for college. My sister got the exact same model, on the same day. She has had no problems with her machine. I, on the other hand, have had hard drive problems not once, but twice, in the short period of time that I've owned the machine.
The first time this happened, I turned the machine on, and it made clicking noises and soon displayed that dreaded gray screen of death. Soon, a folder icon with a question mark appeared. I had one friend look at it, then she asked her boyfriend, who is much better with computers, about it. He doesn't particularly like Macs and told me to throw it out the window, but as far as real advice, he couldn't help either. I took it to Computer Care here on campus, and they called me a little while later to say the entire hard drive was shot.
I was obviously upset, as I had had the machine for about a month and had nothing backed up. I had to order a new hard drive, and after a lot of hassle involving a very rude customer support person at Apple, problems with shipping, and finally a fairly helpful person at support who helped me figure out the shipping issues, I got my new drive, and Computer Care installed it for me. Needless to say, it wasn't something I wanted to go through again.
The other day, I had my computer on sleep mode, and when I went to use it, it wasn't responding. After I let it sit and let the cursor rotate for a few minutes, I restarted the machine. To my horror, when it started up, once again it was making loud clicking noises and showed the gray screen. Pretty soon the folder with the question mark showed up and I was ready to panic. I called home to get help from my Dad, who knows more than anyone I know about Mac products and swears by them, and to have them look up service centers. We tried a couple of things but I was pretty much resigned to the fact that my hard drive was again damaged and I had once again lost everything. (I had just that day deleted extra stuff from my desktop and was going to back-up as much as possible this weekend. The only thing I have backed up is my iTunes library of music.)
I was shipped the installation disks, and brought my computer to Computer Care once more to have them take a look, just in case. The verdict was the same, and they said it was extremely rare for it to happen twice to the same machine in such a short amount of time. I've now ordered ANOTHER new drive, and called technical support tonight, hoping Computer Care just thought the easiest solution was to replace the drive and that there might be something else I could do to try to salvage what I could. I was walked through trying to see what was on the drive with the first installation disk, but was told once again that everything was probably gone.
When I get the hard drive in the mail, Computer Care will install it once more for me, and I'll use the start up disks again.
I'm here now to see if there's any possible way to get some of my work back, but also to inquire as to whether this has happened to anyone else. Why would this happen twice in such a short amount of time? I've been raised with Mac computers (I remember having a black and white one years back) and have tried to defend them against PC friends in the past, but quite honestly, I'm not sure I want to stick with them after all of this. How do I know this isn't going to happen again?
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Apple has sent me a hard drive free of charge in the past and is doing so again, but they shouldn't have to in the first place. I was upset the first time this happened, and am now as well, but I'm also really confused that I'm having so much trouble with a product from a company that I've stuck by until now.
    Anyone had a similar experience?
    thanks for your time.

Also, I keep trying to find a way to e-mail Apple about addressing this issue and about the information I am now finding on MacBook HD failures, but I keep getting led in circles in the support section of the website. Anyone know which email I'd use to contact them about this?

  • Lightroom – Library view – Why 2 different displays of same hard drive

Background - PC/WinXP32/LR2.6 – I use a “working catalogue” for this months shots – on my C drive, and an “archive catalogue” on a large external network storage (Raid) drive (“Ark”).  This is because – when I just used the external drive, if I exported to CS3 to finish off an image, then saved it back into LR, it would take 20 – 30 secs, whereas if I worked from a Catalogue on my C drive it would save it in 2-4 seconds. (who knows why?).
When I have finished working on that months images, I then “import from catalogue” into my “archive cat” (without copying the original raw image files), then I copy across the image files via explorer, then re-link them in LR (I don’t copy the image files across with the cat because I have found that it renames them all differently to my naming scheme!).
The problem – this has worked well for 6 months or so until now.  When I re-link the folders, it is putting them (on LHS of Library module – see screen shot at http://chrishowe.zenfolio.com/p773837375/e1b184507
) into another file system under a second “copy” of “Ark”. Even worse, I use annual & quarterly parent folders (see screenshot at http://chrishowe.zenfolio.com/p773837375/ebe93e9c
for folder/file structure) – my annual folder “Lightroom 2010”, after I put a dummy image into it, so it will import, has been placed in the first version of “Ark” on LHS of Library module, but the individual folders (such as “2010-01-07-snow”) have been put in the second version of “Ark” on LHS of Library module – and furthermore do not have the parent folder showing.
If I right click a folder on LHS and choose “update folder location” etc – it tells me there is already a folder of that name in that location (which I already know).
I could solve this by re-importing all the images ( I tried it with one folder, and it puts it in the right place), but I lose all my adjustments in the develop module – as it just comes up as “import” on LHS.
Has anyone any ideas about this?

I saved them as "complete". The pages I'm saving have the text and images confined within a gray field that is narrower than my monitor screen, with solid black filling in along the sides. The pages I've saved have lost the gray backgrounds and black edges, and spread the remaining text and images across the entire width of the screen. The background for all of it becomes solid white. The two attached images show what I'm talking about.
    Thanks for your help!

  • I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) Would it let me get them back?

I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) If I were to use iCloud, would it still take those songs and let me listen to them (and maybe re-download them?) Or am I out of luck?

Open iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, and then go to Purchased on the right hand side under Music Quick Links.
You can re-download all the songs, apps, or books you have previously purchased.
I'm not sure if this is a requirement, but just in case, make sure you download the latest version of iTunes (v10.3) too.

  • After downloading music and dragging into iTunes I end up with multiple copies of the album on my hard drive. I do have the "copy files into iTunes library" checked. When I try to erase one of the copies I end up with red ! in iTunes library.

Please Help!  After downloading an album and dragging it into itunes I end up having multiple copies of the album on my hard drive.  I do have (under Itunes preferences, advanced) copy songs into itunes library "checked".  I'm sure this is the reason for the multiple copies.  When I try to delete one of the copies of the album and go back to itunes and try playing a song, I get a red exclamtion point next to the song with an error message saying itunes cannot locate file. My questions are, Does Itunes literally make a copy of the song? If so , How do you know which file to delete?

Sony's own entertainment software on the Vaio plays merry **** with iTunes, worse there's no telling when it will kick in.
First head over to the Sony Vaio site and get the update for the software, that will stop it from messing with the iTunes database/library files when you connect your iPod.

With that stopped you can add the music back without fear of this happening again.
