Is it safe to force eject a Time Machine disk that is being encrypted?

The Time Machine encryption process is taking over 8 hours, is it okay to force eject it (using Finder's force eject command, not by unplugging the cable) so I can finish the encryption later?

From what many experts say, u should not encrypt TM. I agree, and I am nobody. But think about it. U are entrusting your backup to a new encryption scheme in a .0 release of what people are calling Mac Vista. A safer way to do this would be to put the enclosure in a tamperproof lock box where only you and your trusted other have the key, and if someone tries to take your data the entire enclosure bursts into flames ala Get Smart. That's what I would do, if I were bothered.
Ps. Pulling plugs on harddrives when they are writing is never a good idea. A better way to destroy the drive is to press the big red self destruct button on the before mentioned enclosure.

  • Time Machine disk refuses to eject.

    My TM disk won't eject.
I have it partitioned into "backup" and "clone". clone ejects fine, backup doesn't. It is, apparently, in use.
Note that the "Ejector" menu extra doesn't see it at all.

I have the same problem with a partitioned FireWire800 disk (one partition for Time Machine, another for data transfer). Here's my solution:
    1. Start the *Disk Utility*.
    2. In the *Activity Monitor* quit Finder (works for me without "Force .." option).
    3. Eject the "Time Machine" disk through *Disk Utility*.
    4. Restart Finder from the Dock.
    Good Luck !

  • Time machine disk not ejecting

I'm having trouble ejecting my Time Machine disk from my mid-2012 retina MBP since installing Yosemite.  If I control-click on the disk image and select EJECT, the image grays out a little but won't eject.  If I try to start Disk Utility, it hangs and won't start.  However, if I first start Disk Utility and then select the Time machine drive and select Unmount followed by Eject, the disk will eject.
Anybody else having this problem?  I don't recall having this issue with earlier versions of OS X.

Well, nobody replied but I'll post what solved the problem:  installing an app called "Mountain."  I also noticed that a recent Yosemite update including a fix for Time Machine problems but I don't know if it address this problem.  In any event, since installing Mountain, I never have a problem ejecting discs.

  • New Mavericks Install-Time Machine disk causes Wifi failure.

Just recently upgraded to Mavericks and have encountered a strange problem.   When my Time Machine external disk is attached, my machine (MacBook Pro 15 Intel 2.53 i5) refuses to connect to my home Wifi (Airport Extreme), giving an error message wanting me to run Wifi Diagnostics.    All other devices connect normally to this router.   I noticed this morning that when I eject the Time Machine disk, it immediately connects to the Wifi without a problem.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

    Not a good sign.
Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Migration Assistant fails to recognize a Time Machine disk (itself migrated using Disk Utility)

So I outgrow my Time Machine disk. I listen to the advice (repeated in multiple places) that one can simply use Disk Utility's Restore tab, select the old time machine disk as source and the new one as destination, and click restore to copy block-by-block, then rename the disk.
This works very well. I have indeed been able to use Time Machine on the new disk without losing any of the history.
But now I am in trouble. I am also outgrowing my MacBook disk. I put a larger disk in and install Snow Leopard from scratch. Now Migration Assistant does not recognize the new Time Machine disk (perpetually spinning wheel). Renaming the disk to the old name does not help. M.A. does recognize the old Time Machine disk, but that means manually managing the changes (and giving up on the larger TM disk). I reinstall Snow Leopard and do not miss that time the option to restore from Time Machine, but it still does not see the new Time Machine disk.
How does one convince Migration Assistant to use a Time Machine disk that duly has Backups.backupdb as a root folder and where "ignore ownership on this volume" is not set?

Thanks, Pondini, but the Time Machine disk passes the Disk Utility repairs and only the spinning wheel was visible under both the Setup Assistant and the Migration Assistant.
I now have some good news, and some bad.
First the good news: Lion's Migration Assistant offers the option to copy user (and other) files from the previous OSX disk, not just the Time Machine disk. If this option was already in Snow Leopard, then I missed it.
    Now the bad news..
I spent several hours reading (Pondini's and others') suggestions to ensure that my Time Machine is as seamless as possible, namely, for the next backup to be incremental. No luck: all user data are copied. Until the interface of Time Machine stops trying so hard to shield us naive users from making decisions on our own, one idea is to keep the iPod and pictures/video collection backed-up by the straight-forward rsync. Then whether Time Machine is really incremental will not matter, and in any case a spare copy of the documents you wrote by hand is nice in case the some blocks of the disk fail.
But I may have been the one who messed it. In Preferrences \ Time Machine \ Options... I excluded all users except the user "Admin" who restored the user accounts. The idea was to test first whether the mildest user will get a full backup. It may be that Time Machine does not look in the history to see if a given file or set of files already have some copy in the past. If a file does not exist in the very last backup, it is saved to the Time Machine disk.
If you're reading this and are keen on an incremental backup, try this: restore your user accounts using a user Admin, but do not start to backup until after the accounts are restored. Will the backup afterwards be incremental?

  • Time Machine disk ejecting

    Hi guys,
My Time Machine disk keeps ejecting itself.  Once it has ejected itself I cannot write to it or even format it, I usually have to boot Yosemite/Mavericks off a USB and in disk utility there, repartition and format the disk.  It will then backup and be fine, but a few days later it will fail again.
I have tried this with 2 drives, a WD 340gb and a 1TB seagate and get the same results, although the seagate DOES seem to be more temperamental.  I have looked around the net and found threads with these issues but never a total solution.  I know that Linc Davies is an expert on these things so if you're around Linc, any help you could give would be amazing!
I read in one of Lincs previous threads to go to console and then system and filter "backup".  I have done this and dumped the log.  I will paste it below.
I look forward to any help you can offer.
    regards.

  • How to eject a Time Machine backup?

I have one large hard drive that I partitioned it into a bunch of drives and I use it to back up my family's three laptops. I move it from machine to machine every few weeks and let Time Machine do a back up. This worked GREAT with 10.6.x but with an upgrade to 10.7.5 on one of the machines, I now get an error message saying the drive is in use and I have to force eject. I don't like doing that. It seems to work fine, but, if the back up has happened, the next back up won't happen for more than an hour, why can't I eject the disk(s) as I used to?
Do I just force eject anyway?
I also have another desktop machine I plan on upgrading to 10.7 (and eventually 10.8) and I keep two Time Machine back ups for that one, one hooked up to the machine and one offsite. Every month I switch them. I imagine I am going to have the same issue there as well.
What do I do?  Is there a work around or some new option I am not taking advantage of?

Baltwo - that was a excellent link. Lots of good info. From reading through that, I get the feeling I should be able to do what I have been doing all along - have two Time Machine drives that get swapped out. So then the question is; Once Time Machine has finished a back up and I don't have Time Machine running, I should NOT be getting an error message saying I can't eject an TM external drive.
As it stands now, I have to Force Eject.
    Why?

  • My external Time Machine disk is almost full. I know TM is supposed to erase the oldest back-ups to makew room for newer ones but is it safe for me to just erase the back-ups from  2 or so years ago to make room for TM as well as anything I might want to

My external Time Machine disk is almost full. I know TM is supposed to erase the oldest back-ups to make room for newer ones but is it safe for me to just erase the back-ups from 2 or so years ago to make room for TM as well as anything else I might want to add to this external drive?

Time Machine makes room for backups as necessary in a complex and sophisticated fashion, and it's not something to mess with lightly. However there are instructions at the bottom of this link which tell you how you can. Those instructions are part of the ultimate resource for all things Time Machine, put together by an Apple Support Communities member who is greatly missed.

  • Time Machine disk not found

I have a late 2012 iMac and have set up Time Machine to use a Toshiba 3TB external USB drive.  Every time I power up the iMac, Time Machine reports that it cannot back up as it cannot see the Toshiba drive although that is connected and powered up.  I have to go into Time Machine preferences, select the Toshiba and "stop using" it.  I power cycle the drive, then re-set up Time Machine to use the Toshiba and the backup is then successful.  For the rest of that iMac session backups run successfully.  During the session, I do not in any way disconnect or power down the Toshiba while the iMac is powered and simply power the iMac down at the end of the day.  I seem to remember that if I do power down the Toshiba, I get told that it was not ejected properly.  The problem here is that the Toshiba does not show up anywhere onscreen or in Finder so that I can eject it.  But should I need to anyway?
While not fatal, this is mildly annoying.  Can anyone see what I am doing that is wrong?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Try another drive. You should have more than one backup drive anyway. One backup is not enough to be safe.

  • Cannot connect my time machine disk

My Mac with OS 10.9.5 (Mavericks?) time machine disk keeps loosing the connection to the disk and I cannot figure out how to reconnec the disk.

Problem solved!  It was actually spotlight service using the time machine backup.  I searched the internet and found some info on this.   I 'forced quit' the process in activity monitor (called 'mds') and it worked....now I was successfully able to eject the time machine backup drive.  Now, it must take days for this to index the drive but, I want to be able to eject my time machine drive whenever it is done backing up so that I can take my macbook to different rooms without having to carry the drive!

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

I don't think you quite understand how Time Machine really works. But then hardly anyone does. Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.

  • Time Machine disk is not unlocked automatically

I have a FileVault2-encrypted Time Machine disk connected to my MBA through a Thunderbolt display in my office (the disk is a Buffalo Thunderbolt drive).
When I leave the office, I eject the drive. put my MBA to sleep and disconnect it from the Thunderbolt display (the drive still connected to the display).
When I return in the morning I reconnect the display, wake up the MBA and log in. But then I always have to manually unlock the external drive with Disk Utility. Otherwise it won't show up in the finder and Time Machine won't make any backups. That's annoying, because I often forget this procedure and TM silently fails to make backups.
Is there a way to automatically unlock the drive when I login in the morning, just like it does when I reboot the computer?
(the passcode for the encrypted drive is in my keychain)

I have had trouble twice with TM, both occasions involving similar odd messages about available space. Once on OS 10.5 and once on Lion 7.1
    Try:

  • Migration assistant doesn't "see" Time Machine disk

Just got a new logic board, and they wiped the hard drive.  My Time Machine disk mounts, and I can see the files.  However, migration assistant doesn't list it as a source.  (Yes it's formatted Mac OS Extended [Journaled])
Time Machine recognizes it and wants to use it as a new backup disk, but it doesn't want to show me anything from the old back up. I didn't do a new backup of the "new" computer.  I don't back up applications just users.

Just back home from a follow-up visit to the Genius Bar on this migration issue (from MacBook Air to new MacBook Pro).
Previous efforts to migrate had taken endless hours and seemed to hang at the 20-mins-remaining mark.
At the store, even after we manually turned off WiFi before connecting the Thunderbolt cable, Migration Assistant seemed to turn WiFi back on and start the migration over WiFi.
In the end, we used the Air (source) in Target Disk mode, which forced the computers to use the Thunderbolt cable.  Migration took a little over half an hour, as opposed to 12 hours or more that Migration Assistant was saying earlier when apparently trying to use WiFi.

  • Backups Recovery from Failed Time Machine Disk

    Hello;
I have been experiencing a serious problem since this April, tried everything I can do with no sign of success. So I though to ask you guys, hopefully you will be able to help or at least guide me to whom can help.
Well, it is a long story, but not to bother you with it and since I know you are not willing to go to bed now, I will just give you a timeline and if you feel like want to know more about a scene, tell me and I will narrate...
    - I have MBA 256GB and 1.5TB Seagate GoFlex for Mac, which was used mainly for Time Machine, according to "backups.backupdb" it contains 75 backups.
    - Due to accidental unplugging, it failed. First I was seeing error that I have to backup this drive, then it was totally unreadable on Mac but works on Win and Linux, then after a while it stooped working even on Win, but still working on Linux.
    - I tried many solutions to fix the drive/disk without formatting, since I had no alternative media to backup the drive to before formatting. None worked.
    - A month ago, I bought the new 2TB Time Capsule. Then using Linux terminal I managed to copy the whole "backups.backupdb" folder to another disk; however, after copying I found its size 65.5GB And obviously when Time Machine was used to browse these bacups, it did not find any!
    - Used Data Rescue 3 to clone an image for the whole Seagate disk, it is 1.5TB.
    - While the Seagate is not yet formatted, I used Data Rescue 3 to scan it for the lost files inside, and it found everything already there; but the "backups.backupdb" was 14.1TB! I do know why or how!!
    - I tried to format the Seagate, they reused Data Rescue 3 to scan it, and the result was the same.
    - I tried to mount the cloned image, of course the drive was not mounted since it is corrupted but the disk was attached, and reused Data Rescue 3 to scan it, and the result was the same for the third time. No wonders for me, I know the three cases maybe identical.
Finally, here is what I have now:
    - Formatted and readable 1.5TB Seagate disk.
    - Cloned 1.5TB image from the Seagate disk, before formatting.
    - 2TB Time Capsule, 1.5TB of it is occupied by the cloned image file.
    - Additional 500GB and 1TB extrenal disks.
    - I also have an iPhone, new wallet, and other irrelevant stuff!
And all what I think about is way to browse the cloned DMG so that I can extract my REAL "backups.backupdb" folder.
Does any of you have a clue how to do that?
Or any other method to recover my backups?
Once more, there is details for every part, just tell me if you want to know more.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kind Ragards.

Then using Linux terminal I managed to copy the whole "backups.backupdb" folder to another disk
You can't copy Time Machine backups that way, unless you used asr(8), which I don't think you did.
The "GoFlex" device accounts for a disproportionate number of reports on this site of problems with Time Machine. I suggest you stop using it for backing up.
Delete whatever you copied to the Time Capsule and start a new backup. I strongly recommend that you also back up to a locally-attached hard drive (not the GoFlex) at least some of the time, as network backups are less reliable. You should have more than one backup anyway.
