Is it still worth getting one?

I have someone offering a G5 2.0Ghz Dual Processor with a 20in display. The Mac itself is what Im interested in and its in prestine condition. 3 yrs old and used only for graphics design. Has 3GB ram and Im not sure about HDD, but thats no problem. My question is, are they still worth getting? Or should I hold off? Im only using FCP 5.1 for light HD work. Any input would be nice, let me know, thanks!

If the price is really low, say $600 or less (taking into account the value of the 20-inch display), it may be. Depends what you want to use it for...
It will probably do a better job with FCP than your non-Pro MacBook. With 3GB of RAM, it will run Leopard very well. But if you are still going to be using your MacBook most of the time, the Power Mac G5 is a pretty large hunk of metal to be sitting around taking up space.
I have the last 2.0 GHz model (dual core) from 2005. Someone uses it full-time, and it will be useful for a long time, even if Apple stops supporting it with the latest OS release. But I got it three years ago. I don't think I would get one now.

  • Are the all silver cinema display still worth getting?

I'm getting a mac mini anf will need to get a new monitor for it. I was on ebay and saw the all silver cinema displays on theren for arounf 200 dollars. Are those still worth the money and are they good monitors?

This new display is designed for use with the new MacBooks. If you want a dual display solution that works with the current iMacs then you need to buy one of the current Apple Cinema Displays.
Future Apple Cinema Displays will be using the new DisplayPort interface which will require a mini DVI to DisplayPort cable to be used with current iMacs.

  • Is it still worth getting Elements 6 for Mac?

At the moment I am using the free Gimp software. This does most of what I need, but I have seen Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac going relativly cheap. I know it's not the latest version (which I doubt could run on my old OS 10.4 PPC G5 anyway) but is it going to be better than Gimp, or would it be a waste of money?
I hope to get a better understanding of photosop, and follow some of the many tutorials out there. These rarely refer to Gimp, which functions differently, and so are of little benefit.
    All advice is gratefully appreciated.

  • 13'' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro (non Retina) - Still worth getting?

I'm looking into getting a new Mac.
My thinking at the moment is that the SuperDrive will be much more useful to me than the Retina Display, so I was thinking of getting the older 13'' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro. But I hear this model is being phased out; would I be stupid to get this now instead of one of the newer models?
What other sorts of things should I be thinking about?
    Thanks for all replies.

    Little Endian,
it depends on what you need to do with a new Mac. My “new” Mac (bought last year) was a used Mid 2010 model; it suffices for my needs. If you require the higher resolution built-in display, then the non-Retina model can’t compete. I’m not sure which model has the longer battery duration per charge. Physically, the non-Retina models have socketed RAM, so their RAM is user-replaceable; the Retina models have soldered RAM, so their RAM isn’t user-replaceable. The non-Retina models take industry standard 2.5-inch form factor, 9.5-mm high SATA drives; the older Retina models take Mini-SATA SSDs, and the current Retina models take PCIe SSDs, both of which have far fewer choices available if an upgrade is desired. The non-Retina models have Ethernet and FireWire 800 ports; the Retina models require Thunderbolt adapters if either of these is needed. As you’d noted, the non-Retinas model have a SuperDrive; the Retina models would need an external drive. The non-Retina models have a Kensington lock slot; the Retina models don’t. If out-of-warranty repair would be an issue for you, the non-Retina models are easier to repair than the Retina models.

  • OK so worth getting one?

I have been following these forums religiously lately and have been considering getting a macbook pro 17" for back to school. I want a computer for web/graphics, and some minor video mainly web video. I have heard all the horror stories which are typical on any products support forums. are there enough out there in macbook pro land that have an all around satisfying experience with their macbook. I mean this is a big Expensive!! investment and I want to make the switch. Just a little cold feet. I'm not looking for unrealistic low temps for a intel processor. just peace of mind.

I've had my 17" Mac Book Pro for 1 month now-it is my first Mac and I too was worried about the heat and whine things I read in forums. I finally decided that people only wrote messages in forums when they were having problems and not when everything worked well. I have been extremely happy with my new Mac , no whine, it does get hot (more so when using AC) but the 17" is really too big to sit on your lap. The screen is beautiful and it is so fast I can't stand it when I go back to my PC. It is an elegant looking machine. I'm having some trouble getting used to the operating system and I expected a lot more from iPhoto and decided I won't use it but will use Photoshop Elements instead though I don't like their browser. I never intended install windows as XP is a pain in the neck compared to OSX.

  • Only getting one channel of audio with mic HELP

I had been using Garageband with the built in mic to do my podcasts. I just got some real gear.
Here is what I got... M Audio USB fast track, MXL V63MBP running on 10.3.9
I am only getting one channel of audio through the mic. I have the settings on the mixer right and I have gone in the sound preferences and made sure it was right.
On the track in garageband, I made sure that the real instrument settings were set to Stereo. I have been messing around with this thing for an HOUR and I am still only getting one channel of audio. I've done everything I've been able to come up with in google and still nothing works. If anyone has any ideas ,that would be swell because I'm beginning to think that the crappy built in mic on my mac is looking really good about now.

    You're welcome.
The common confusion is that 'Stereo" means two speakers and "mono" means one. Stereo actually means two different signals going to the two speakers. Since a Mic is a mono input device, you set the track to mono so that the same sound comes out of both speakers. Enjoy --Hang

  • I'm trying to buy more storage on my iPad but when I get to the "buy" button, it has my old Apple ID and I can't go any farther. I've changed my Apple ID on all my devices, logged out, logged back in, rebooted, etc., but that one area still has old one.

You can't buy more storage on an iPad. You are referring to space on iCloud and that probably won't accomplish what you are trying to do.

  • I have two libraries on separate computers. If i turned itunes match on in both computers would the two libraries merge? So if my iphone normally syncs with my laptop would i still only get the iphones library or would i get both as one?

I have two libraries on separate computers. If i turned itunes match on in both computers would the two libraries merge? So if my iphone normally syncs with my laptop would i still only get the iphones library or would i get both as one?

Yes, the two libraries should merge. However, you need to turn on match on one computer and let it finish before adding the second library.
Once you turn march on n your phone then you don't sync it with iTunes, but the merged library will show up on the phone. If you don't turn on match on your phone and continue to sync then all of the music from both libraries should be available to sync to it.
The only bit I can't confirm is what happens if you try to sync music to the phone which isnt actually downloaded into iTunes. Im not in a position to test that, but maybe someone else can help.

Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.  I actually did not resolve the issue which is why i did not post an answer.
it turns out that my iphone seems to default to an incorrect User ID (it defaults to an @me account, which is not something that i have ever used).
even when i change the User ID in my settings for the iTunes store, it still appears when i attempt to get updates for my existing apps.  however, it does seem to use the correct ID when i attempt to purchase new apps.
If someone actually had an answer to correct this, i would love to update my existing apps.
    Thank you.

I was downloading $15 worth of iTunes songs from a gift card when my iPod died. Now, no credit & no songs on my iPod. Where did either my $$ go or my songs that I paid for disappear? How do I get one or the other? I have 2 of the same iPod's and logged onto both with the same as well as different apple ID's and passwords to each respective iPod and the completion of my downloaded songs has disappeared into thin air. Where did it go? How do I get the credit too re-download those songs to the correct iPod? Please help me!! [email protected]

What happens when you try to redownload them?
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
On a computer go to iTunes>Store>View Account>Sign in and go to purchased history and see if you actually purchased them.
    Try redeeming the card again

I lost my iPod touch 5th generation charger and I have looked everywhere for it. This is the second time I have had to get another one. I got my iTouch in October 2012. Can I still get one for free at the apple store? I'm at 10% battery and I need it charged soon D: thanks!

  • Would these two refurbished MBP still be worth getting?

I'm thinking about getting one of these MBPs because I want a 15in screen, and the dedicated graphics cards, but don't want to spend almost $2,000 for the lower base 15in models with Iris Pro Graphics. However, considering the hardware, would these two still be good options to last another 4 years or so, when considering future software and OS developments?

In my opinion they are both good machines.  I would go the extra $60 for the 2013 just because it is slightly newer and very slightly faster.
Since they are both Retinas, neither is upgradable so looking at the specs, both are good to go...8 GB ram is important, both are kind of skimpy on storage at 256 GB, but you can add an external drive to gain mass storage and use the internal primarily for Mac OS X and the applications themselves...data on the external.  Everything else is the same.
Apple reforms have new batteries, cases, anything faulty replaced, and fully tested.  So like buying a new computer.
