Is it time to upgrade to an imac

Hi..
I currently work on Logic 9 and kontakt 8 library and some other au instruments.. All of this is connected to a 2009 MacBook with 2gb ram.
My only question to the experts is whether a ram upgrade would let me work full fledgedly or is it time for me to upgrade to an iMac ??
I haven't received any replies when I posted the same on the logic forum, would appreciate if you could take some time and post ur suggestions..
Cheers,
Gaggy

Adding more RAM to your computer probably wouldn't hurt. Upgrading to an iMac would be a step in the right direction unless portability is essential. But new iMacs come with Lion or Mountain Lion, so you should first determine if your essential software is compatible.
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.

  • Time Machine Error when upgrading from old iMac to new iMac

Hi. I recently purchased the new 27" iMac and just completed migrating all data from an old PPC iMac. When I went to activate Time Machine and begin backing up on an existing 1TB Time Capsule, I received the following Time Machine error: "The backup disk image "xxxx" iMacG5 sparsebundle" is already in use."
Does this mean I need to go into Time Capsule first and delete the old iMac's sparsebundle before activating Time Machine on the new iMac? If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
    Thanks!

No, you shouldn't have to do that, but you may want to if the TC's disk isn't well over twice the size of the data you're backing-up.
Most likely, all you have to do is eject the sparse bundle via the Finder.
A new feature in Snow Leopard will allow you to continue backing-up to the same sparse bundle. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
Yes, but if there's nothing else on the Time Capsule, this will be much faster:
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.

  • Time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme?

As the title says, thinking it's time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme (Draft 'n') to the latest 5th generation model, just to be clear my existing Extreme is the current form factor white square design and not the very earlier dome version (although I did have one of those too once upon a time).
Here's my thinking/question, current Extreme has been a great trusty workhorse since new, reliable and generally rock solid performance, however a recent upgrade to a super fast 'Fibre To The Home' internet connection is making me think it's time for an upgrade to solve low speed/throughput issues with the current Extreme setup.
With my current iMac networked to the wall mounted Fibre (1000 Mbps ethernet) router via Cat 5e I'm getting amazing speeds on speedtest.net (i.e 760 Mbps down and 228 Mbps up), however when wirelessly connected to the Extreme with my iPhone 4S and MacBook (Black) I get the following speedtest.net results:
iPhone 4S: 17 Mbps down and 34 Mbps up
Macbook: 24 Mbps down and 63 Mbps up
(Interesting that the uploads seem to have better connection/throughput than the downloads, normally the opposite applies?)
I understand that the current Extreme is somewhat crippled as it features 100 Mbps Ethernet ports (latest models have 1000 Mbps), however the wireless speeds still seem way below what I would expect (i.e. nearer 100 Mbps), both the 4S and Macbook are within feet of the Extreme.
The Extreme is set to 'n' only 2.4 Ghz, bridge mode (letting the wall mounted Fibre router do all the routing/DHCP work) via Ethernet Cat5 from one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the wall mounted Fibre router to the Extreme WAN port, tried various channels, 1, 6 and 11. Current Firmware 7.6.1 on the extreme. I have also disabled the wireless connection/network on the Fibre router to avoid any possible interference with the Airport network.
So my main question is, should I look to upgrade to the latest Extreme model, will this improve the wireless speeds, based on my setup what wireless speeds could/should I expect with a new Extreme, or am I missing/overlooking something within the current setup?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks John, this certainly helped.
    Speedtest.net results:
2.5 Ghz n: 19 Mbps down and 53 Mbps up
5.0 Ghz n: 28 Mbps down and 58 Mbps up
It also came to light that I wasn't using the best of the speedtest.net servers to do my testing, by accident I selected a different one (Newbury UK - Vodafone) to the one I had been using (Milton Keynes UK) and the Newbury server indicated download speeds of around 50 Mbps, which I feel much happier with.
Seriously considering a new Extreme for the simultaneous 'n' networks, 1000 Mbps ports and no doubt improved components, antenna etc.
Will report back if/when set up.
    Thanks again.

  • HT3275 The backup disk image "/Volumes/terry bostock's Time Capsul/terry bostock's iMac.sparsebundle" is already in use.

I,m getting this message, The backup disk image “/Volumes/terry bostock's Time Capsul/terry bostock’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use. What does this mean. I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, but it was ok till recently.

A constant bug in Mountain Lion.
Usually, simply powering off the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and starting it back up will reset the network connection.
    Give that a try first.

  • Continual problems with my emac, is it time to upgrade?

I have had my emac for 5 years. First 4 years were great but in the last year I have had performance problems. I took it to my local mac store and had them upgrade to Tiger which helped with some applications but still slow. My superdrive first started to scratch some dvds, later it wouldn't burn dvds at all and now the drive door won't even open. Are these all problems that can be easily fixed?
I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade to a new imac since it has been 5 years. If so, any advice in terms of processor, memory, etc. on a new 20" imac?
    Appreciate any help

Internal optical drive replacement is covered in the Apple eMac Upgrade Guide. It's easier to just use an external optical drive, through (e.g., something like this).
Have you tried running a CD lens cleaner through the internal optical drive a couple of times? Sometimes something that simple works.
You may not be aware that Tiger 10.4 and later introduced a 'feature' whereby a quick press of the optical draw open key no longer suffices; you have to keep the key held down for a good one to two seconds. (Maybe there was a rash of complaints about the optical drawer opening unexpectedly as people brushed the key while aiming for the sound control keys.)
How much free space is there on the hard drive? If there's less than 1GB, the Mac will be running into problems as it runs out of room for the Unix scratch and swap files. If the hard drive fills entirely, a Unix-based computer (which includes OS X) won't boot at all except into single-user mode. Try to keep 5GB or so minimumm free space (that allows you to do an Archive and Install if necessary). A ballpark figure of 10% of the hard drive free is eaasier to remember and allows more of a safety margin.
When the store upgraded to Tiger, did you get the OS X Install disc? Do you have any pre-Tiger disk maintenance or repair utilities, including OnyX or the pre-Tiger Disk Utiltiy? Running an earlier utility could cause problems; see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes.

  • Orginal ipad running slow, time to upgrade or can it be saved?

Using original ipad and it is running extremely slow and "crashing".  closed all open apps and still no better.  is it time to upgrade to newer ipad or can it be "fixed"?

I always say, when your system is getting painfully slow to point of frustration, there are a number of things you should try:
    1. Delete all the rubbish apps, addins and unnecessary files you don't need anymore and free up disk space.
    2. OR Do a clean install of the operating system to ensure you are running as optimised as possible.
    3. Upgrade the components where you can (HDD to SSD), max out the memory.
    4. If it's still slow, admit defeat, list it on eBay and put the cash towards a new one.
Upgrading the memory is a no-brainer in your case if you are wanting to keep it. Check out http://www.crucial.com/ and the Crucial Advisory Tool for a guaranteed upgrade for your system.
    For example:
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-memory-for/Apple/imac-2*8ghz-intel-core -2-duo-%2824-inch---800mhz%29-mb325ll-a
    4Gb (2 x 2Gb) will cost you $72
Saying that, in your case, I would say go on treat yourself and buy a new one if you have the cash. Your investment back in 2007 has done you proud 7 years later. Check out eBay. Your iMac is still selling for good money. The extra memory will buy you a little more time, but with OS X Yosemite coming out soon, wouldn't it be great to have a nice shiny new Macbook Pro (as you hint at) :-). Especially as the sale value of your existing iMac is only going to go down.

  • How do I restore my iPhoto library from my old macbook (stored in time machine) to my new iMac?

I have my old macbook backed up on my time machine.  The problem is, when i enter time machine on my new iMac, I can only restore files from the current iMac's backups.  I can go to finder, and find my files under the "shared>airport time capsule" menu, but I don't know how to safely and accurately restore the iPhoto library to the current iMac's iPhoto.
Most of the searches I did on this topic kept advising to enter time machine, find your file and hit restore, but I can not select files from my macbook's backup in time machine on the current iMac.

    Linc Davis wrote:
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.
This seemed to do the trick.  I found the iPhoto library file and chose restore.  The question now is where to put the iPhoto library file.

  • Time to upgrade, but concerned...

Hi...I currently have an iBook G4, and while I love this little white book, it is deffently time to upgrade. I have droped this puppy more then once and now it is a permenent desktop due to hinge damage.
Anyways, im thinking of buying a new macbook, but a couple things concern me.
    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a vintage PSX during ff7. haha.....you know what i mean...(if you don't, look up some PSX game system history...lol). Anyways, my ibooks fan never turns on. during the 2+ years that ive owned it, its maybe turned on 5 times, and that was usually during WOW. It also scared the crap outta me, because it would just turn on and id hear this wizzing noise.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im still concerned on how they are working out. Any personal thoughts, experiances...ect.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks. Derek =]

    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a
    vintage PSX during ff7.
I got mine 5 months ago and when I first got it, it did run hot. But after the firmware update, it's been beautiful. I mean it never seems to get hot. Not even toasty-warm.
And I rarely noticed the fans running, though, of course, sometimes they do.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im
still concerned on how they are working out.
Again, there were some hiccups at the very beginning, but at this point the experimentation is waaay over. Every new Mac is using them and they're working out brilliantly. Lightening speed and great performance.
Upgrade, guy. You will be amazed not just by the speed and performance of this machine, but by its stunningly beautiful screen, the incredibly responsive keyboard and being able to use the built-in camera. It's really a fantastic machine.

  • Time to upgrade:  Long time Apple user, get the Iphone 4 or Droid 3???

    Hello,
It's time to upgrade to a new phone for both me and the wife, she needs a new phone now as her LG env3 is acting up.  I'm a looong time Apple user, and of course the Apple iphone is a natural to pick, however It'll cost $350 for 2 when we use the last $50 credit for new/every 2.  The new Droid 3 looks very interesting and we can get 2 for $149 for both with the credit and the BOGO sale going on.
So which should we get, mainly use the phone for talk, texting and will of course check emails, etc once we get a smart phone.  The Env3's we have now are good at texting with the keyboard and of course good for talking.
If we go for the Apple, I could get her the iphone 4 for her and I can wait for the iphone 5 if it's actually coming out this year.
    Tony

I currently have a Droid Global 2 and while I enjoy the expanded features of a smartphone, I miss my Env2 terribly for one main reason :  The keyboard was the best!.   The Droid Global 2's slide-out keyboard lacks dedicated number keys and is a bit cramped compared to the Env, but much faster/accurate than an iPhone.
I will be upgrading to the DROID 3 as it now has dedicated number keys and a larger screen.
While I really wanted an iPhone, the lack of a physical keyboard was the dealbreaker.  I test drove a friends phone and made so many errors in email, texting, dialing #s that I knew it wasn't going to be acceptable for me.  It took forever to do basic texting...and I have very small hands/fingers!   Can't imagine how big 'man hands' would handle the iPhone.
If keyboard accuracy/'speed is not a big deal the and iPhone will work for you.  The iPhone is much lighter as it doesn't have a physical keyboard....some people just have to have Apple regardless.
    Good luck on the Apple

  • Is it time to upgrade my Macbook's RAM?

    I have a Macbook 2nd generation (2 GHz, 1 GB memory).
When I open Photoshop CS2 or Illustrator CS2, it tells me that my memory is running low.
Also when I have several programs open, such as iTunes, Safari, and iChat, they seem to run slower.
ALSO I've discovered the Activity Monitor and been watching it...when I have Illustrator and a few other programs open, it says I only have 17.31 MB of free memory left. Also it may state 66063/4749 (for example) for Pages ins/outs.
In conclusion, does this mean it's time to upgrade my Macbook's memory? I've had this laptop for almost 3 years now and it's definitely held up way better than my previous HP laptop.
If I need to upgrade the RAM, how much does Apple charge for installing it themselves? I don't think I'm confident enough to install it myself.
Any thoughts would be very appreciated. Thanks!

You can install the memory yourself, you just need a size 0 philips screwdriver (avail in any hardware store or radio shack). Memory is cheap, I would go to 3 or 4g (I think your model can only address 3g). How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac? I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Try opening the Mac App Store and go to the Purchases tab. See if you see the preinstalled iMovie App there. You may have to accept it into your Apple ID if you have not done so already. Then it should upgrade.
