Is it worth it spending $200 dlls in the new Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac?

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade my Mac to the new Microsoft Office 2008. Is it worth it? What are the differences between the new version and the old one?

There are more differences than would be practical to list here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicrosoftOffice_2008_forMac
might be a good place to start, as well as Microsoft's website for a full description of new features. ArsTechnica also has a review of it on their website somewhere too.
Is there any specific reason for upgrading? If not, then I would recommend sticking with 2004. I went out and got 2008 about a month ago (student licensing, so it only cost me $40) and I'm not at all impressed. It's slower than 2004, even on my quad-core Mac Pro. The overall responsiveness of the application is sluggish, especially in Powerpoint. Dragging textboxes and other elements around the page, for example, is incredibly laggy and feels imprecise. No to mention Microsoft broke Endnote compatibility in Word 2008 as well, so if the Cite While You Write feature is important to you, forget about it. I'm sticking with Office 2004 and iWork for now. I don't feel so bad since I only spent $40 on it; no way would I justify $200 unless I needed 2008 for a specific reason (ie work compatibility, etc)

What about videos, movies, photos, etc?
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Why can't I accept the new terms and conditions for iTunes?  It has been since I updated to ios7. Really thinking the update was/is more hassle than its worth. Ready to throw my phone from a moving car

TThis whole update has been nothing but trouble for my phone. Yes there are some nice features but this is ridiculous. I have tried what others have said to do with no help.

Tell me where you are planning to throw the phone out of your moving car.  I want to pick it up from the side of the road and resell it.

  • Is it worth getting an ipod classic over the new ipod touch if i'm mainly into music?

hey, i'm contemplating whether to get a classic or a touch. i have ~20 GB of music which will fit in both devices. which one should i get?

It's really a matter of your own personal choice.
The 160GB iPod Classic and the 32GB 4th gen Touch are the same price. A 32GB 5th gen Touch however, will cost you slightly more.
The iPod Touch is more fun once you start using the Apps. (And they're often useful Apps too!)
The iPod Classic will have greater capacity as your music collection becomes larger. Although you currently only have 20GB, one assumes that your collection will continue to grow. Don't forget that Apps take up space too. My Apps use 4.3GB.
The iPod Touch is "cooler" than a Classic
The Classic is unlikely to be a good choice for use while jogging. (It has a hard drive which will skip as it is being constantly moved about during jogging.)
So, for and against for each. It really is your choice.

  • Refer classes of Microsoft.Office.Policy dll in Custom web service sharepoint

    Hi ,
I have created a custom web service which refers to Microsoft.Sharepoint dll and Microsoft.Office.Policy dll.
Added reference tags to these two assemblies in disco file
deployed this web service to _vti_bin.
An error occurred during the compilation of the requested file, or one of its dependencies. The type or namespace name 'RecordsManagement' does not exist in the namespace
'Microsoft.Office' (are you missing an assembly reference?)
This dll is already in present in GAC not sure where else should we be copying this dll to?

    Hi,
Please try to remove the reference of the Microsoft.Office.Policy.dll then add reference it again and rebuild you project.
Also try to enable “In-Place Records Management” site collection feature.

  • Is getting Logic Pro 9 now worth spending $200?

At this point, I think Logic Pro 9 is almost 4 years old or something. Any idea if they will be coming out with a new one soon? I want a step up from GarageBand as I have been getting more serious about recording my music, but I don't want to waste $200 if they release a new version soon. Is they any sort of upgrade fee that if you bought q previous version you get a discounted price of the next installment or something like that, or if I buy this one, and say in a week the new one comes out, I'll have to pay another $200, or whatever price the new one is.
    Thanks so much!

There is now only one version of Logic... called Logic Pro... (Currently v9.1.8) which can only be purchased and downloaded from the Mac App Store. The Additional content mentioned below is downloaded from inside of Logic pro itself for free.
    The previous versions were;
Logic Studio (The Boxed Set) of which there were two version 1.0 and later on 2.0 including Logic Pro 8 and Logic Pro 9 respectively
Along with that came DVDs containing the additional content (Instruments, Apple Loops known as Jam Packs, and other items... on a physical medium along with several other smaller programs such as Soundtrack Pro and Waveburner.. neither of which are available or supported by Apple now.
Logic Studio came as a Boxed edition bought online and them mailed to you,  from Apple or via 'Bricks and Mortar' Stores
Logic Studio was discontinued when Logic Pro was made available on the Mac App Store. You might be able to locate one on Ebay for example... though frankly, for most people..  its better to stick with the latest download only version in reality.
Logic Express was a cut down version of Logic Pro and again, was only available on physical DVDs and is no lomger sold.
There were also older versions of Logic itself sold on a physical medium prior to Logic Studio being released.
    That's it!

My iphone 4s got water in the headphone poert. I put my phone in rice for 24 hours and the LED is on. It stays on even when the phone is off. How can i fix it without taking it to apple and spendding 200 dollars to have them fix it?

Short answer is you probably cannot.  Once water gets inside the device and it is powered on, the damage likely is permanant.

  • How Do I download Logic Pro X on my new Mackbook without spending $200 to redownload it?

  • I have 1 GB RAM on an '07 MacBook Pro. 1) How do I check remaining memory? 2) I have Microsoft office 2004 - do I need to buy more RAM to upgrade to '11? 3) I need a new battery ... Is it worth the $$ to buy a new battery, RAM and Microsoft office 2011?

I have a MacBook Pro from '07 with 1 GB of memory. The battery is shot and my AppleCare has run out. I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.8. But a few questions:
1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11 because I can generate pdf's from Word. Roughly how much RAM does Office '11 take up?
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
ANY help would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
If you're asking how to check to see if you need more RAM, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory tab, then compare page outs and page ins.  If page outs is 10% or more of page ins, you probably need more RAM.
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
There's no limit on the number of battery cycles, it's just that the more cycles you've used the more "worn out" your battery gets.  You've got a 4-year-old machine, and if it's still got the original battery, it's probably about time for a replacement battery.  You can check battery health using System Profiler...  look at the Power section under Hardware.
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11
You don't need Office 2011 to create PDFs.  Any application capable of printing can create PDFs on a Mac.  Just choose File -> Print, but instead of clicking the Print button in the print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save As PDF in the menu that appears.
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
I'll "ditto" sig's answers to these.
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
If Office 2004 is still working fine for you, stick with that and don't incur the costs of Office 2011.  As to the RAM, only add more if the test I mentioned above indicates that you need it.  If you buy more RAM when you don't really need it, you won't see much (if any) performance improvement.  That just leaves the battery...  and if the machine is still doing what you need it to do and you don't really need a new machine for anything, you could definitely buy a new battery and get a few more years out of it.

  • Please recommend personal finance software for Mac that allows month to month analysis of spending by categories.  Quicken on a PC was good at this.  Mint seems very limited.

Please recommend personal finance software for Mac that allows month to month analysis of spending by categories.  Quicken on a PC was good at this.  Mint seems very limited.

Quicken for Mac 2007 works just fine (and is said to be compatible with Mavericks).  It is often denounced for not being "modern", but when something works, and does everything I want, I need a good reason to switch.
A few years ago (2011), I got that reason when I upgraded OSX and Quicken stopped working due to the absence of Rosetta.  I switched to iBank.  I used it for more than a year.  It was cumbersome, they have no sense of a helpful user interface, but it "works".  I found ONE feature that I liked:  you can attach an image (or any file) to a register entry, so I can save receipts right with the register.
But when Intuit came out with the revised Quicken 2007 for Mountain Lion, I gladly went back.  I found that being able to update stock prices right in the portfolio view (for those not automatically found online) was handy - in iBank you have to generate a report to see the holdings, and then you have to switch to a view of "Securities" then scroll down through that list to find your stock, then "edit" then change the price, then "Save" then go back to reports and re-generate the portfolio view.  Also, if you enter a stock purchase in a Quicken register, the price you paid gets added to the price history for the stock (as of the date of the transaction).  No such help in iBank.  Most of the helpful UI features (like increasing the date with the + key) are glaringly missing in iBank.  I find I am getting no more than about 3-4 keystrokes before having to move the mouse and click.
If you are considering sharing the app on an iPad, Quicken won't work, but I found that iBank for iPad doesn't work either.  The interface is completely different from the Mac version, you can't do much with it, and if you have a stock whose price is $11.25 / share and sell 200 shares, you might find that $22.50 gets added to your cash in the account.  (I actually made a few million dollars when it decided that 200 shares at $11.25  yielded $2,250,000.)  Luckly, I received a refund for that app.
Depending on how the Mavericks switch goes, I hope to be able to stick with Quicken, but I am keeping my records up-to-date in both now, because I can live with iBank.  I will just have to keep an eye on its arithmetic.

  • Ordinal 459 could not be located in dynamic link library.urlmon.dll What the heck is this and how do I fix it?

I get the following message:the ordinal 459 could not be located in the dynamic link library. urlmon.dll. I get this when requesting list links within a genealogy program (not on the internet) Haven't noticed it on anything else yet because I have been obsessing over just that one program. At the same time I notice that my windows sidebar is not visible. Have not changed any settings. Java was disabled due to the recent exploitation. Would that have something to do with it. Or perhaps Firefox18 installed and then it went bad? Thanks in advance for any help. Running Vista.

If this issue is caused after you have applied MS13-008 which is a security update then I would think that this is a Firefox issue and that something changed and they have to find a new way to do what they where doing before the update.
However since the error message states it can't find the file urlmon.dll has anyone checked on why this file is missing or why it is not registered? Since URLMON.DLL is not updated by MS13-008 I would suspect this could be a coincidence.
Here is a related Microsoft KB article about that dll causing similar issues with IE and how to address it.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679
I mean a quick google of that exact error message "The ordinal 459 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll" has results of this problem going back to at least 2011 long before MS13-008 was released. There are a number of solutions as well for different situations posted.
It may be worth checking some of those is the Microsoft KB above doesn't help.
And yet I am left thinking that Tyler's statement from January 16 about it being reported by other uses and apparently being caused by malware is the most likely reason for this issue. He does know Firefox rather well, and he is an employee of Mozilla. So I really would start with his suggestions of checking out their KB's he listed:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware

  • Log-on client 200 is not the same as BI clients "600"

    Hi Experts,
My data load got failed and when i checked the error message, it says " Log-on client 200 is not the same as BI clients "600"".
    Diagnosis
You are using client-dependent BI functions in client 200. However, the standard BI client is 600.
    System Response
    The function is terminated.
    Procedure
Maintain a destination in the BI standard client. For information, see SAP Note 522569.
I went through the sap note and checked the maintenance of  rfc desination. But not able to uderstand this issue. Do anyone have good idea about this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Anand

    Hi,
In BW, you must work on only client. As the error said, you log on to client 200, but using 600 client as the connected one. Please check the source system conncection whether it is given for the default client in RSADMINA table BWMANDT field or not. if not change that.
