Is Mountain Lion 10.8.1 Causing GPU Usage to be 100% (iStat Menus)?

I'm running a Macbook Pro (8,2) with a 2.3GHz Core i7 Processor, 16GB of Ram, 480GB OWC SSD, High-Res Screen (BTO).  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, and now notice that iStat Menus is reporting 100% GPU usage.  Is anyone else seeing this?  It never decreases; always stays at 100%.  There seems to be quite a bit of chatter about this over at MacRumors forums and MacUpdate.  Based on their Twitter feed, Bjango seems to believe that this is a Mountain Lion issue/bug.
Anyone else seeing this?

It is an issue of iStat. On my iMac with the same GPU it show also 100%. But Open GL Driver Monitor show about 13%.

  • Mac mini 2011 Radeon 6630 Mountain Lion- Lost Open CL and GPU computations etc

I had everything working in Lion, why did i bother upgrading. hehehe..
Any advice to get this working. Right now its greyed out in the performance settings. I lost Open CL and The option that helps the GPU with computations.
Is there any modifcations I can do to make it recognize the OpenCL. Apple pisses me off they never can just stick with a single OS long enough for all the software developers to support them.

Noel, thank you so much for responding. I have GPU Basic, advanced and normal. I just lost Open CL and Use graphics processor. I had it in Lion as I was part of the beta for Cs6 and complained and complained, they enabled it all. I think its a photoshop CS6 issue inside of mountain lion.
Any way to like use a setting to force photoshop to enable these settings.

  • Does anyone else have Mountain lion stability issues that cause a crash once a week?

I have a mid-2011 27-inch iMac with 16GB ram and upgraded to Mountain lion as soon as it was available (like always for last 5 years); 8th Mac I've owned. Early on there were a few bugs and issues that I thought would go away just like previous upgrades.  But it's been half a year now and I crash about every other day!  This is by far the worst Apple OS change ever, from a stability perspective.  What happens is I will do some mundane task (could be anything really) that will give be a spinning beach ball and then it gets worse.  No programs respond and eventually the only thing to do is complete power off shutdown.  What triggers this: clicking to open photo in Aperture, clicking a website icon in Safari, clicking upgrade software in App Store, running a backup with time machine, etc. etc.  I can't detect any pattern as it's happened a lot.  I'm a photographer so I spend more time in Aperture than most users and see a lot of crashes from there, but it's not just Aperture.  This is getting to be like MS Windows.  Apple - help!  Please fix this OS before I have to buy a PC for better stability.

  • Thinkpad T420 GPU usage always shows 100% in Power Manager

Did anyonce face the same problem before?
Mine was a i7 2620M+HD3000 T420. When I open the power manager, I fount my CPU usage is around 30~40% and my GPU uasage is 100% stable... I didnt open any game when I open the power manager. Anyone know whether its ok?
BTW, when I watch film on this laptop. The CPU temperture could raise to 90 celsius...

    Hi there!
What you describe is not normal behaviour, something is running in the background and is using up resources.
I suppose you are running Windows 7? You can search for the process (program, driver etc) that is causing the usage if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select "Task Manager". On the tab "Processes" select "Show processes from all users", then click on the header "CPU" to sort them by CPU usage. See if you recognize the name of the process that is using up your CPU/GPU resources, it might be an antivirus or, conversely, a malicious program. Upload a screenshot if you can.

  • Mountain Lion Mac Mini Server Ethernet Port Not Working

I have a Mac Mini Server and once I upgraded to Mountain Lion Server the Ethernet port is unresponsive. It worked before upgrading. Is there something with Mountain Lion Server that is causing the Ethernet port not to work properly?

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Cant use CCC to clone Snow Leapord mac to Mountain Lion mac

    hello all,
I just bought a MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 not retina), and it came with Lion OSX. I recently installed Mountain Lion OS and it appears to be working welll except I am having trouble using a cloned external drive. I cloned my 2007 MacBook (Snow Leapord), using CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner), onto a Seagate 320GB eternal USB Hard Drive. When I plug the drive into my new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and go to system Preferences, startup disc, select the coned drive, and click restart, the computer shuts down and appears to be starting to restart, but it just stays on the white screen before the apple symbol shows up and the apple symbol never even pops up, it just stays white forever without booting up. Now, I tried using the drive as a startup disc for my dad's 2008 MacBook Pro with Leapord and it worked like a charm and also tried it on my sister's MacBook Pro (Lion) and it worked fine there too. Is there something about mountain lion that could be causing this problem? I even tried using Target Disc from my old mac (that i cloned) to my new one and it wasnt working either. If anyone has any ideas, please help! Are there any particular tricks to using CCC for Mountain Lion? Thanks for the help!!!

Thanks that makes sense, however, my sisters Macbook pro worked with it and hers is a 2011 and came with Lion, so I'm not sure what to make of that.
Right the Early 2011 model MBPs came originally with Snow Leopard installed and Apple updated SL to 10.6.8 to work correctly with the newer hardware in the Early 2011 models. Then in June Lion came out and then all shipping MBPs came with Lion Pre-Installed but they would still run SL if you had the 10.6.8 version of SL. Since the Late 2011 models were basically the exact same computer, just upgraded CPU and some other minor changes, as the early 2011 models even though the late 2011 models came with Lion Pre-Installed SL would work on those if you had the 10.6.7 or .8 version of SL.
Now with the newest Mid 2012 models all of the Base hardware was changed to the most current versions available, New hardware. Even Lion that worked on the late 2011 models will NOT boot on the Mid 2012 models.
The 2011 version/build of Lion does not have the correct driver package to work on the new hardware.
Apple put together a Special build of Lion to work on those newest system with an updated driver package for the newer hardware.

  • I downloaded Mountain Lion and my mac gets very hot

    Is this normal?

I suppose it depends on how hot. Mountain Lion drive the CPU and GPU much harder than previous OS's, especially if you are coming from Snow Leopard.
My 2006 MacBook Pro got extremely hot when I ran Lion on it.

  • Restoring a Lion Time Machine back-up to a Mountain Lion iMac.

I have a Time Machine back-up that was backed up on an iMac running Lion.  I'm now buying a new iMac and it will be running Mountain Lion.  Will this cause a problem if I try to restore my new computer with my time machine back up that was done using Lion?  Do I need to do anything before I plug in the backup?  I can’t update my old iMac because it died and Apple said it would cost several hundred dollars to fix it.

    Nick,
Thank you for the reply.  I’m a relatively simple MAC user.  I don’t do a lot of stuff on my Mac other than pictures, videos and documents… simple things.  Very little third party stuff was on my Mac.
When I booted my old machine I know there was a screen asking for me if I want to use a time machine back up to transfer data to my new iMac, at least there was in Lion.  I used that feature when the HDD went bad in my old iMac.  It was very easy.  Do you know if I can use that same feature or do I have to do something special because it is a different OS?  I don’t want to go back to Lion.  I just want to make sure it will recover my old stuff easily.
    Again.  Thank You!

  • Cannot download Mountain Lion.... error 100

Tried to download Mountain Lion but its giving an error Try Again Later (100) and then Item not available.... ???

Apple's servers are getting pounded as we speak do to the thousands-millions downloading, so there will be some errors that you will encounter.  My Answer is keep trying,  wait this afternoon, later today or tomorrow to beging downloading.

  • Is mountain lion compatible with quickbooks online?

I use QuickBooks online and have not been able to get it to work since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I can log in, but none of the dropdown menus work.  When I try to post a check or payment none of my vendor information populates and none of my account assignments will populate.  Help!!!

Thanks. So you're saying I can still use the hard drive I bought, just don't use the automatic software that came with it?! Here's what I found in the user's manual:
To use the drive with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard operating systems, and to use Time Machine, if you want, you must first:
    •          Reformat the drive to a single HFS+J partition •          Restore the WD SmartWare software and disk image
....but still not sure if it will be compatible with Mountain Lion once I upgrade....I guess I have to wait and see?!

  • 10.8.2 Mountain Lion Update Causes Major Problems

I'm running an early 2009 iMac and I made the jump to Mountain Lion about a month ago. Initial upate ran OK, I had some problems but overall it ran pretty decently. I held off on updating to 10.8.2 because I wanted to see if it caused any issues, but decided to go ahead about a week and a half ago. Since then, my computer has had daily problems. To name a few, my computer completely crashes when going into sleep mode and will not return, the sound frequently disappears and goes unrecognized. iTunes has been an utter disaster - I have an iPod classic, which as soon as I plug in causes iTunes to crash. I've had similar issues with my iPhone 4. Airplay drops regularly when I never had that issue prior. Homesharing in particular causes iTunes to crash, which was working infrequently as of just yesterday.
I've had quite a few issues, which over the past few weeks has rendered my iPod classic and old iPhone completely useless as I cannot sync them to put music on them (I restored iPod to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. So now I have an empty iPod that won't sync). And the workaround of using homeshare was viable as an alternative, but now does not work at all. Connecting to my Apple TV takes 5-10 times longer than it previously did, and the connection occasionally drops. I used all these features with a regularity which makes this extremely frustrating.
Not sure if Apple plans to fix this with iTunes 11 update, but I'm hoping something will come about soon. I called support to inquire about downgrading back to Snow Leopard, but the guy on the phone convinced me to reinstall the OS, which I did. It has not solved any of my issues (although I was finally able to update my iPhone 4 to the latest firmware, it will still not sync or do Homeshare). Any ideas how I could solve these problems? These all started happening the day I updated to 10.8.2 and, as I said, I hadn't experienced anything like them previously.

I have done that, several times.
So this is where I'm at now - last night, immediately after finishing a movie that was on my WD hard drive, which holds all of my media, music, movies - I restarted my computer and then it would not read the drive. It said it was unreadable.
I brought the Mac and the drive into an apple store today - they said basically it was my hard drive causing the issues. I used my iPod classic as my media back up as the 160 gb could hold all my stuff. Well, as I mentioned previously, that can't sync and I restored it, with no success. So in essence I lost my media drive and the back up. Tough to swallow, I'm angry, I think it's still mountain lion causing the drive to fail.
So I resolved to go home and restore my computer to one of my time machine back ups and do a Snow Leopard reinstall. Well, the moment I returned from the apple store, the time machine drive is now listed as unreadable. I called support, spent hours with them - I now have two drives which fried within 10 hours of each other in the same error. The senior support manager agreed it sounds like mountain lion is indeed corrupting my drives somehow. My iMac currently won't start into the recovery disk. So I went out spent $200 to get a new hard drive, which I am now backing up my data onto with a new Time machine.
In the last week, I've lost my iPod classic, iPhone 4, two external hard drives and now possibly even the Mac itself. I'm going to install snow leopard and see if it alleviates any of my issues, or hopefully can read my drives. I truly believe Mountain Lion is the problem.

  • OSX Mountain Lion Upgrade causes Restart, Kernel Panics

Have tried resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, and Disk Repair. This is happening after an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. A fresh install is not a possibility. of course, I have a time machine backup and can go back to snow leopard if I have to. I cannot do a clean Mountain Lion install although I am planning to do one just to see if this is a hardware issue and not a software issue, and then revert back with time machine. I'm not having any luck discerning what caused the actual reboot.
There is no particular action I take that causes this. It happens randomly. It has been happening since the upgrade today. I installed XCode4 on the computer from the app store, which did not upgrade but instead put another copy of Xcode. There was a thread I researched where someone suggests removing an AppleProfileFamily file from Sytem/Library, but I do not have that file on my system.

This software seems to pinpoint the problem. I haven't had the restart issue with Intel onboard graphics only. However, this definitely isn't a problem solved.
After much more research, I found that people with my video card have been having this issue since OSX Lion and Apple still hasn't fixed it. This is incredibly disappointing. I will be contacting Apple for a refund on Mountain Lion soon if I can't find updated drivers.

I'm having trouble with Photoshop CS6 after installing the mountain lion. When the graphics processor is enabled photoshop crashes. I believe it is a conflict between ML, GPU and Accelerator ATI Radeon 5770.
Any predictions for this bug fix?

Apple can't stick with an OS long enough for Developers to keep up, whether they want to or not.
    So, strike one against Apple.
Apple has a history of poor graphics options and equally shady with regard to driver development.
    Strike 2.
Adobe has always "supported" Apple on Adobe's "own terms".
In the old days when Macs were limited in user number, somewhat understandable.
    But now.... Strike against Adobe
Adobe has taken to a development/release cycle similar to that of Apple OS X, but fails to properly support the OS versions that it targets.
    Strike 2 against Adobe.
Neither company really gives a crap about the user needs/desires. What is offered is what some marketing types (real world, yeah, right) decide a user "wants".
    Strike 3 against both companies.
    The user is out.

  • Updating to Mountain Lion has caused me to lose Adobe Creative Suite - is it possible to upgrade?

I have recently had to upgrade to mountain lion for my new iPhone 5, however this has caused me to loose my much loved Adobe Creative Suite. As soon the upgrade was completed my photoshop, illustrator and acrobat icons had a white symbol over them that looks like a no entry sign. When I click on it a pop up window appears that says 'You can't open the application because PowerPC applications are not supported. It is an old version of creative suite (the first I think) but I can't afford to buy a new one. Does anyone know whether its possible to upgrade or a solution?

It must be a very old version of Adobe. I run CS4 and my son runs CS5 with no issues and I believe CS3 can run under ML although I have not seen it as such, only read it here.
Upgrading is expensive but well worth it if you use Adobe regularly. You can always run Snow Leopard on another partition or external drive and run your old AdobeCS within that if you want.
    Good Luck
