Is My System Almost Pro?

I am studying and learning video editing. Over the last few months I have been diligent in trying to get my home studio up to speed to be as professional as possible. (I purchased the mac pro before I started trying to create a pro editing studio - So I know I should have probably went with 8 core) Here is what my setup is.
Mac Pro (MacPro4,1) Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.93 GHZ for processor speed 6GB of ram, ATI Radeon HD 4870 video card (512 MB),
Matrox MXO2 with MAX
Two 30" HD cinema displays
17 inch Flanders Scientific LM-1760W broadcast monitor
External LG Blu-Ray DVD burner
4TB External Hard Drive - eSata (connected via PCI card)
GTech 2 TB Raid External HD
52 SD Card reader w/ SDHC capability
FCP 7
ADOBE CS4 Creative suite
I currently edit footage from mini dv, dvd - I would like to be able to start working in HD very soon. I really want my home studio to be as professional as possible. Any suggestions on items I may be missing? Is this a pretty decent setup.
Thanks

What makes a system "pro" is that it is earning you a profit. Who cares what equipment you use - as long as you deliver what you promised, on time and as specified - and hopefully exceed client expectations? If you do good enough work with your Fujitsu and Avid that people will pay, and pay gladly for your services, then by all means, it is a professional system. What more do you need?
When I show my reel, I don't get asked what equipment I used to do the work. If I do, and the client is not technologically knowledgeable, it's a good hint to avoid the job. Because you will be chasing endless demands for you to work with equipment that may or may not be the correct choice for you or the task at hand, simply because it has "buzz".
An example of the no-brain faddism is the phase we just went through where some clients would not be happy unless he was told his footage was being shot on a Red Camera. Currently the hip request is to shoot on a DSLR.
If you get a chance to see the DVD version of the movie Moulin Rouge by Baz Luhrmann, there is an "extra" on the disc that shows the director and entourage flying in to work with Fat Boy Slim to do some of the music for the movie. When they walk in Fat Boy Slim's studio, they (in essence) all make fun of his 12 year old Atari computer - until he explains it's the only computer he knows how to use - and begins cranking out the awesome music in the movie.
Is he less professional because of his equipment?
A professional is one who gets paid for the work they do. If you are defining professional credentials, or a competitor's professional credentials based on the equipment that is owned - IMHO - you are showing how un-professional you are.

  • Why does system suite pro 12 crash when running file cleaner is running while firefox is installed? If I uninstall firefox then system suite pro 12 won't crash.

When I downloaded the newest version of firefox system suite pro 12 crashes when running file cleaner after I uninstall firefox system suite pro 12 doesn't crash. I have window 7 premium home edition 64 bit.

You should know a few things before before getting started:
    1. Registry "cleaners" and "system optimizers" like SystemSuite are very unreliable, cause more problems then they propose to fix, have little to no benefit, and are somewhat of a scam. Running them on a system is almost guaranteeing a crash or hiccups somewhere along the process. running them is never a good idea. all you need is a good, simple, free anti-virus (like Microsoft Security Essentials), and use the built in Windows Utilities to clean and sped up your computer if needed.
    2. This is a Firefox forum, so if you are having a problem with SystemSuite, we might not be able to help you.
I'll give you a few things you can do to see if this is just a Windows problem:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers].
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): [http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/ http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/].
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. [http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.malwarebytes.org/]. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.
Plus, I'd strongly recommend removing systemsuite and any other "optimizers" you might have.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

  • Lenovo solution center doesn't seem to recognize System Mechanic Pro as an antivirus program

I I just recently purchased a Thinkpad T430s and also purchased System Mechanic Pro - all from the Lenovo website.  When I installed System Mechanic Pro - it advised me to remove any other antivirus program on my laptop as multiple antivirus programs can cause conflicts.  It looks like Lenovo had pre-installed Norton, so I uninstalled it and installed System Mechanic Pro, which seems to be working well.
The issue is that Lenovo's Solution Center does not seem to recognize System Mechanic Pro as an antivirus and continues to state that I have not installed an antivirus program.
Am I missing something?  Isn't System Mechanic Pro an antivirus?   Is there a way to get Lenovo's Solution Center to recognize I have an antivirus installed?
    Thank you.

Pages is "not responding" when I try to open any document on a Lion Operating System, Macbook Pro. What can I do?

Ah then that is the issue.
    1. Is Pages registered? It turns into a demo version after 3months otherwise.
    2. This makes it interesting as to what happens if it has, because a demo version can't/won't save and I'm curious if this causes a bug in the ever so wonderfully thought through process of versioning in Lion
    3. There may actually be a problem with one of the documents which again causes a bug in the ever so wonderfully thought through process of versioning in Lion
    4. You are entitled to AppleCare telephone support to try ands resolve this in detail which is difficult to do without seeing what is actually going on because there are multiple files involoved
    5. Which raises the issue of does it freeze consistently on hitting a certain document? In which case moving or archiving that document may get Pages to actually launch

Temperatures are normal, so your MacBook Pro is working correctly. Fans will turn on automatically when temperature is high, so don't worry about that. If you see that fans don't turn on, reply back because it would be a hardware problem

BWPRO has PR3 as the source system for R/3
trasnfer rules are all based on this PR3
do the system refresh to BWQUA
still the transfer rules refer to PR3
even if i create a new connection to Quality R/3 as QR3
i cant create transfer rules for QR3 source system.
    1) how is this situation handled in your experience.
    2) Is there any type of translation that can be done for system refresh too( like we do for transports from Dev to Pro)
    Suggestions appreciated.

  • Thunderbolt update V1.2 is not supported on my system: Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3

I'm trying to connect an external 8 Tera thunderbolt hard drive to my Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3, and it is not recognizad, so I tried to make the thunderbolt upgrade V1.2, and a windows appears and says: "this software is not supported on my system"
Please tell me waht to do.
    thanks a lot.

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays andhigh-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It sets new standards for speed, flexibility, and simplicity. And it’s on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.
I don't see mention of the Mac Pro.

  • Upgrading Operating System Mac Pro 2008

I'm currently running 10.5.8 on my Mac Pro which I bought in September of 2008. Can I upgrade to any of the latest versions?

Upgrading to a later version of Mac OS X does not, in general, improve the speed of those things. What will help a little is the change to 64-bit kernel that is possible in 10.6.8, and is the default in later Mac OS X versions.
More memory is often helpful. You can use Activity Monitor to analyze your use:
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier)
Many MacPros are actually I/O bound due to a "traffic jam" around the Boot Drive. This tip can help you consider a different organization that provides an overall speedup:
User Tip: Creating a lean, fast Boot Drive
All paths to later versions of Mac OS X go through the 10.6 DVD available at the Apple Online Store. Once Installed and fully updated, the Mac App Store appears, and it is used to "buy" later versions including 10.9 Mavericks.

  • Version 7.0.1 gets HUGE, the display gets skewed and then the system (XP Pro) locks up!

Computer is a Lenovo T500, running XP Pro. Since version 7.0.0 Firefox grows HUGE to the point where the display gets skewed and the system is locked and then unlocked.
I have to kill Firefox in order to clear up the problem -- then it starts all over again. I have seen it grow to well over 1,400,000 KB of memory usage-- and more!
It was working fine on the Firefox 5 versions.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Performance on intel imac - system almost unusable

I'm running iPhoto 6.04 on a 2GHz intel imac with 2GB of Ram.
When I launch iPhoto -- everything slows unbearably. Even the typing speed in other applications, the finder is unresponsive, applications quit, It takes forever to switch between applications, etc.
I run Menu Meters to monitor processor usage and they never show the processors maxed out during these spells. Often they're at about 1/4 full and the system has become completely unresponsive for 10-20 seconds or so.
When I load the library -- I'm only viewing a small subset of my photos (I have 32k photos) of 3k photos as I know that helps. Once I manage to switch over to iphoto and it has a chance to think for a bit, scrolling through the photos is quite speedy.
I've tried a full library rebuild (using all the options), repaired permissions, used disk repair utilities, etc. but to no avail.
Anyone else have any ideas on this? No Rosetta apps are running, menu meters currently says I have 700MB of free ram.
    Any advice welcome, thanks,

    Hi
    Thanks much for the reply.
    I've deleted both
    ~/Library/Cache/iPhoto
    and
    ~/Library/Cache/iPhoto Cache
    (and restarted iPhoto of course)
In activity monitor I saw iPhoto spike as high as 124% while launching, but it was very momentary and went back down where it bounced between 40% and 4%. I didn't see anything else that looked unusual.
In the last few relaunches, it seems like the longer I keep iphoto open the faster it gets.
Real Memory is ~530MB for iPhoto, Virtual Memory is ~905MB
Switching between applications in the first few minutes a number of applications suddenly showed in Activity Monitor as (Not Responding), then 30-40 seconds later they would come back to life. I monitored these same applications when iPhoto was not running and they worked fine.
I had to force quit iPhoto once, usually it takes roughly 30 seconds to quit.
I did find some interesting stuff in the Console. I'll paste it here to see if it rings any bells:

  • Can we install ELEMENTS on same system as PRO?

    Hello
Please may I ask a question on behalf of my elderly father?
He is an enthusiastic user of Adobe Premiere PRO for producing home movies for his family. He is on his 3rd machine which currently uses CS3 and (I believe a MATROX RT capture card ?). His 1st machine used v6 and is 2nd machine used CS1.5 ??
I mentioned he is elderly ... I know v.little about what he does, but it seems apparent to me he gets VERY confused and makes subtle changes to the program (inadvertently) which he then doesn't understand, and cannot correct or go back. His source for all his work is a Panasonic MiniDV camera.
I was wondering if he might benefit from a 'downgrade' to ELEMENTS v9 which may be easier to use and less confusing (but hopefully work in the same manner)? Any comments would be HUGELY appreciated. He uses ENCORE to produce the DVDs. Can we purchase ELEMENTS v9 and install it on the same machine and see how he gets on with it (without removing PRO CS3) or will there be some incompatability issues?
Thankyou VERY much for any advice
    Kind regards from UK
    priyp

I wouldn't change his workflow if it already works for him and he likes it.
You can have both on your PC (I have both PrePro CS5 and PE9) and they don't interfer with each other at all.   Though, if he is using CS3, I assume his computer is a few years old and it might not take well to PE9.
    cheerio!

  • 2 drive system Macbook pro

I have a defective internal optical drive in my mid 2010 macbook pro.  2 questions
    1.  I have already pulled the defective drive.  is there a drive caddy that will allow me to place a second hard drive where the optical drive was?
    2.  Can I put a clean install of Mountain Lion on that drive, leave the original drive in its place, and turn it into a data drive?

There is this one from ifixit,  http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/9-5-mm-SATA-Optical-Bay-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclos ure/IF107-080
    This one from OWC,  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/
I am looking to do the same myself and use my existing hard drive in the optical bay as back up and slip in an SSD into the main drive slot for performance.  I like the look of the Ifixit model, it looks sturdier and they are similar in price.
You can search on ebay and amazon as well, they may well have these products slightly cheaper.
    I found these on ebay,  http://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_nkw=macbook%20pro%20hard%20drive%20caddy&_from=R4 0&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:IE:1150
but they seem a bit too cheap in price compared to the other two listed above, this always makes me a bit wary.
