Is "RAC" Free if you use "Standard Edition" and not the "Enterprise Edition" Databases?

Hello to All you wonderful Oracle Guru's....Greetings...
I was told to do some research on this, it's quite simple, but it's a question of getting management to buy in the idea of going with Clusters and moving off the nice and secure single instances..
Is RAC FREE if you use "Standard Edition" instead of "Enterprise Edition"...
Does anyone know?
I am going to do a Proof of Concept RAC install for management\devs\ect and others to review....

Oracles licensing is predominantly per seat (user) or per CPU. So taking per CPU, you would need to figure out what you need - say you want to license the DB on RAC, you will need a license for Oracle Database Standard Edition (either per user or per CPU) - so only bound per user or per CPU on which the database(s) are running. If you have 2 x servers in a cluster, you will have 2 x installations of Oracle DB, each running on n processor(s)
If you can quantify the number of users (if say an internal application) you can go per seat (say 50 users) but there will always be a minimal user license.
Alternatively you're looking at per CPU. Generally you're speaking of the backend to a system that serves a large volume of users, so rather than license 1000 users, you'll just license the core.
If you take a look at the above, you'll see that Oracle determines processor charges around the number of processors and cores (so some cores might be charged at 0.25 of a processor price). Here's a link to how you can cost processors (some processors with 4 cores will still only be charged as 1 x processor, as Oracle will rate each core at 0.25 of a processor) when calculating price.

Sayeed's example will work great if you don't care which 50 rows you get back. If you do, you can use an inline view to sort them first and get back a ranked result set:
select *
from (select whatever
from table
order by key desc
where rownum <= 50

Can I use OC4J only and not the full Oracle AppServer?

When I install Oracle SoaSuite then the full Oracle Application Server including the little brother OC4J
is installed. Can I somehow (at least theoretically) only install/use the OC4J server and omit the full Oracle ApplicationServer?

SOA Suite is certified only against the Oracle Application Server. You need to have/run on this, or on WebLogic.

Can you use iTunes match and not get duplicates if you maintain mp3s and aiffs files of the same song in either the same or separate libraries?

I maintain a collection of aiff files and mp3 files of the same music.
Aiff for home listening and Mp3 for my devices.
I can arrange these in the same or seperate libraires.
Will "itunes match" duplicate the songs in the cloud if they in the same or seperate libraies on the same mac?
If not, is anyone aware of how to manage seperate Mp3 and Aiff libraries so as not to get duplicates in itune match?

I checked my "purchases" and the 7/19/13 purchases don't show up. However, the earlier versions from usually several years back...the ones that are Matched...often do show up in my Purchases. I suspect that somehow those REALLY purchased several year old versions were deleted and redownloaded by me so I could change them to the 256 kbps versions under iTunes Match. They were probably 128 kbps versions originally when purchased.
Why the earlier versions that were really purchased are now identified as Matched is puzzling.
Why I now have Purchased versions from 7/19/13 is puzzling too...especially since these versions do NOT show up in my purchases.
Calling Apple Support if a good idea unless someone can explain this mystery. I might even take one of my laptops to the Apple store and show a Genius.

I have an external hard drive that is partitioned three ways. I have made an install disk out of one partition. How can I use this partition, and not the whole drive with bootcamp assistant?

See title.
When the drive is plugged in, boot camp assistant says that no installer can be found, but the application doesn't list the three separate partitions like finder/disk util does.
I am using a mid-'12 retina mac running os X 10.9
Hopefully this is an easy fix.

I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.

Photoshop cs6, how to apply an effect to just the layer you are working on, and not the ones underneath please

I know it a couple of quick keys, but don't know which ones, and something to do with where you click within the layer box (then drag). look forward to the answer!

Yeah, there are few type of effects from adjustment layers that csuebele mentioned to layer styles. The styles can be applied to each layer by double clicking on the layer to bring up the editor. Since you mentioned dragging, I would assume copying or moving to a different layer. Drag the head style name between layers to move them and hold down the alt or opt key while dragging to make a copy.
If you convert the layer to a smart object, then each layer that has been converted can also have editable filters as well.

Monitoring Standard Edition Databases

Hello,
We are currently an all 9i on Solaris shop that is beginning to work on upgrading to 10g and moving to linux 64 bit where possible. As a part of cutting costs, we are moving several production databases from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition and likely dropping the Database Diagnostics Pack.
From what I can tell from initial testing with 10gR3 Grid Control and Database Control, I am unable to set Notification Rules, blackouts, etc so that I can manage email notifications.
So, is it true that if using Standard Edition databases or Enterprise Edition databases without the Database Diagnostic Pack, I can't email alert and job notifications? Do these same rules apply if I were to do all my monitoring from Database Control instead of Grid Control?

If you go to Setup --> management Pack Access, at the bottom there is a link to a licencing page which gives you details on all the packs and what they allow you to do.
I've never used database control, so I'm afraid I cannot help you on that one.

What do you use to edit templates?

I am new to HTML DB and I was wondering what you use to edit the templates to make the site look as you wish. I find the textboxes in HTML DB very annoying, especially since the page can scroll but the boxes too.
And there doesn't seem to be an easy way to preview what you made, so I was wondering if you use different tools to create and edit the templates.

Any texteditor can be used to edit HTML DB templates. Editors I know people are using range fro vi to Dreamweaver. If your a little lite on HTML or CSS knowledge a visual editor like Dreamweaver would probably give you a good start. You can play with your look and feel with static pages then cut up the resulting code to make your templates.
I personally use htmlkit http://www.chami.com/html-kit/ . It's not a visual editor but it's free and it has a bunch of features for coding html , css and js and even plsql.
as for your scrolling issue try adding this into the textarea's "HTML Form Element Attributes"
style="overflow:hidden;overflow-x : hidden;overflow-y : hidden;overflow : -moz-scrollbars-none;" wrap="soft"
That suppress the scrollbars in some cases (works much better in IE than Firefox) but a textarea will inherently put scrollbars in when you add more text in than it can hold horizontally or vertically.

Although you can combine the avchd 1920x1080 material with prores 1920x1080 in the same timeline, you might land up saving time just converting everything to 1920x1080 prores 422. You'd probably reduce the amount of rendering while you're working and exporting when you're done by a great deal. This workflow will require much more drive space.

Oracle Standard Edition databases are based on a maximum number of sockets

Can someone explain this further?
I need install Database in RAC.
I have:
1. Named User Plus Licenses.
2. Oracle standard Edition Database.
3. Two servers with 2 processors Dual Core 64-bit Intel® Xeon® Processor 7140M.
4. Each server has 4 sockets, 2 are occupied and 2 are unoccupied.
My question is:
I need upgrade Oracle Enterprise edition database because I will have 8 socket, although only will use 4 sockets.
I need more information on these sockets, specially in Database SE, User Named plus and multi-chip
processors.
I have contacted Oracle Sales and they/the sales person also do not have
these information.

Try reading through http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/databaselicensing.pdf, and then http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/sig.pdf (page 11) - also pass those URLs to your Oracle sales guy and ask for clarification.
Note that any answers you get here will be quite useless in a court of law, if you and Oracle decide to have different opinions. So it is important you get an answer from Oracle - in writing.

VeI have edit set in iphoto to use in photoshop. When i save in photoshop the photo returns as the original and not the edited rsion.

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window

that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:

I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

How to use Standard POD and Integrated POD at same VMfg session

how POD's have to configure so that you can use Standard POD and Integrated POD at same VMfg session. we have problem that if I login to VMfg and open default integrated POD, this POD opened in normal way. But, after that if you open default Standard POD (workstation ), it will not opened. VMfg gives error 'The POD "" type of I does not exist. (Message 15924)'
Same problem when you login to VMfg and open Standard POD: POD open normally. After that open Integrated POD: this POD open normally. But when open Standard POD again, an error exists 'The POD "*" type of I does not exist. (Message 15924)'

you are right, when &WORKSTATION_TYPE=S is configured for standard POD and &WORKSTATION_TYPE=I for integrated POD, both PODs can be used in same session.
Also I noticed that if &WORKSTATION_TYPE=S is not configured for Standard POD, in first time when I open this POD, I got error. But when I reopen same Standard POD, it will open normally without errors. Why it works so?

That is because you don't have a web server configured and running to serve the html page. In order to see the page in a browser you need to access it using a url similar to http://localhost/~yourUserName if you are serving the page from your user account.
Prior to Mountain Lion you could go into web sharing and turn on the web server. With Mountain Lion there is no option, other than using terminal, to turn on the web server. The web sharing menu item has been removed in Mountain Lion. Apache is still on your computer but it will take a little searching these forums or the Internet to find how to turn it on.
If you want a graphic user interface to turn on/off the Apache server you could download and install a server application like xampp, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html. I use this and it works well.

Can you use a formula field as the default value of a parameter?

I'm wondering if you can use a formula field as the default value of a parameter. I have an date parameter that is being pulled from a stored procedure. When I run the report, it defaults to the current date and time. I would like it to default to he current date and have the time be 00:00:00

Unfortunately, you cannot use a formula field as the default value of the parameter.
And, to get rid of the current time and show 00:00:00, all you need to do is Edit the parameter and set the 'Default Value' to 00:00:00. This will take care of the time portion, however the date portion would be set to the year 1899 and not the current date.
