  • Question re: fan replacement & smc fan control

    hi all,
a few months back, i installed smc fan control and have been using it to run my fans at 6000rpm in an effort to keep my operating temps down (average now is about 115*F).
so, obviously, running my fans at 6000rpm for what is pretty much a continuous time will wear them down faster. my question:
will my fans be covered by apple care? i've got a plan valid for 3 years (i've had my MBP for about a year now). should i expect anything to happen to the fans within this timeframe?
    thanks in advance

    Hi blikebecks23,
When you start up your computer, it's already at 115 or it climbs to that temperature after normal usage? Personally, that's pretty normal operating temperature for these machines. I went to instal SMC Fan Control prior to responding and with my machine "idle" and having a few tabs open in Safari I'm sitting at 117 degrees and the fans at idle of about 2000rpm.
With that being said, I really don't see the need to run the 3rd party application, the built-in temperature monitoring logic for the machine is adequate enough to properly cool the unit.

  • Wireless printer compatible with Leopard?

Has anybody found a wireless printer that is compatible with Leopard and is hassle-free to install and operate?
All I want is a simple printer. I don't need scanners or faxes - just a printer that will work wirelessly.
I bought a Lexmark Z1480 over the weekend - and have given up on trying to get it to work. As others have reported each time I attempted to print a document from any application the programme quit.
If anybody has a suggestion I will be very grateful.

Take a look at the Canon MP600R. If you search here you will find reports from users who have it working in all its modes - wireless, ethernet and USB.

  • IStat Pro, SMC fan control and tempuratures

I've been watching the recent temp. problem threads with great interest.
    My Imac has had no operational flaws *knock wood* but I'm a bit concerned with the temps which iStat Pro is reporting. For instance;
    CPU A 103 F.
    CPU diode 133 F.
    Ambient 79 F.
    Memory Control 112 F.
    HD Bay 1 103 F.
    Optical Drive 94 F.
WDC WD1600 etc etc, (the hard drive I presume), 99 F.
Most of these temps seem pretty darned high to me. OR, am I mistaken and they are not out of line?
Running SMC fan control at about 1/2 way up on all 3 sliders brings these temps down considerably, but I hate to "over rev" the fans and hasten their demise if I don't have to.
    I'll appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks; Jon

Your temps seem low to me but i have no data on what is low or too high

  • New iMac 27 i7 and SMC Fan Control

    Hi Folks,
As a new iMac owner can anyone tell me if SMC Fan Control should work ok, on my new iMac 27 i7?
Also what is the normal operating temps for this iMac?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

The first time that you start smcFanControl (smcFC) on a Mac it will read the fans and their base rpms. An iMac usually has 3 fans. I have not heard that the huge screen real estate 27" iMac has more or less. I have also not seen anyone claiming that smcFC "burned out" their fans.
I use smcFC on both my iMac Core Duo (3 fans) and my Mac mini (1 fan). I find it invaluable here where I cannot afford air conditioning. Macs tend to heat up when viewing any sort of video. I have created settings with smcFC that I use when viewing videos that keep the temps inside my Macs close to the operating temps of when I am checking email and surfing the web.
I believe that the above listed temps are the ambient environmental temps advised for using a Mac, not Mac's internal operating temps. 34°C is actually on the low side. My Mac mini runs around 48 usually. If a Mac overheats it will shut itself off. If you find that your Mac is shutting itself off often I would especially look into why. Is it overheating during a particular activity? Does smcFC perhaps help your Mac run cooler during that activity?
Keep your Mac in a well ventilated place with good air circulation, not cramped into a little cubbyhole of sorts. Every year or two have a Mac tech clean it out. They do get dirty inside, even in your clean home or office. That layer of dirt can add a lot to heating up your Mac.

  • Mac mini with SMC fan control

Just got a new mini a week ago and want to keep it in top running condition, is it worthwhile to use the smc fan control and if so what should I use for settings and any other recommendations.

If you want to keep it in top running condition you best leave this kind of control to the system.
If it is running too fast and noisy for you, then you can slow it down, but of course that will shorten it's life.

  • I need help with SMC fan control?

I recently installed smc fan control but everytime I open it I can't get the minimum fan speed below 4200 rpm's, anyone have any ideas what I should do?

You don't need smc fan control, just Mac, more accurate to say SMC automatically control fan at proper speed.
If it's not proper speed you think, resetting SMC could solve it.

  • Is anyone using SMC fan control on their late 2009 iMacs?

I am very concerned about the heat from my iMac.
    I have a late 2009 27 inch model.
I noticed a lot of posts of GPU and HD failures.
I bought this iMac used through a certified Apple reseller and I can't afford any problems with this for awhile.
Computer components do not Ike heat.
And despite everything I have been reading in this forum aluminum can retain heat. Not simply vent all of it away from the back casing.
Excessive heat is what shortens the life span of any components In a computer.
Heat in a computer is the enemy!
I do not care what I am getting for temp readings from my iMac.
It's very, very warm and I don't like it and feel it will cause issues in the near future.
I just bought this iMac three months ago and, at least for awhile due to personal health issues, I can't afford to repair a potential failure that might occur in the near future.
I posted a similar thread not long ago but only got one response I was not happy or confident with.
I want to know if anyone is running SMC Fan Controls on late 2009 iMac models and if it has helped and whether anyone had issues with it.
I want my iMac to run cooler than it does now.
I am in a living situation where I have limited means to cool the place I live. The room I am using has no air conditioning only a large ceiling fan and I am running a floor fan. I have a small fan blowing air behind the iMac's case to help with cooling it, also.
Room temps can get into the high 80's.
Also, if you are running SMC Fan Control on a 2009 iMac, could you give an idea what RPM setting you are using for the various fans.
I am a freelance graphic designer, Illustrator, and audio/video guy.  Plus I have doing 3D CGI model work for the last few years. I run Photoshop. Final Cut and Blender quite often.
Any real help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!
    ThanX.

Even if I had one, I wouldn't run SMC Fan Control.  Apple has not released the limits of temperature for any of its Mac model interiors.  As such any temperature management is purely guesswork.  If you are having serious trouble maintaining an enivoronment suitable for computers, you probably should consider at minimum a window air conditioner unit.  http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html are very particular about the outside environment.  If that is not able to be maintained, you seriously need to consider a different working environment.

  • SMC Fan Control Troubleshooting

    Hi!
My SMC Fan Control App was running fine until I backed up my files onto my external hard drive and then restored them back onto my Mac.
I used to never have to enter my password, and am now being asked to do so on multiple occasions.
Also,my settings aren't  being saved as well.
I tried re-installing the app, resetting the Vram, deleting .plist files and preference files, but to no avail.
I've also tried downloading the App Fan Control, but ran into the following error.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    I restored the whole system.
The instructions in the link tell me to..
Boot from the Mac OS X Install Disc:
    Insert the disc.
    Shut down the computer.
Turn it on again whilst holding down the C key.
You can let go when you see a spinning dial.
Click through the menus until you after you’ve accepted a license agreement.
Snow Leopard: At the top, click Utilities -> Reset Password.
Lion: At the top, click Utilities -> Terminal. Type resetpassword in the Terminal and press Enter.
Click on your main hard drive.
In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
When I get to number 4 and I click on my main hard drive,I don't see any option to "Select the user account".
Instead,I am given the options to either Archive and install or to Erase and install.
Also,on the bottom,it says the following.
"You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume without changing your installation settings. Click Options to change settings. You cannot upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a new version is installed.

Tried updating firefox but it is not compatible with leopard op. If I try to re-install the older version will my bookmarks still be there?

Current Firefox versions require a Mac with an Intel processor and OS X 10.6.
Firefox 16 is the last version that runs on Intel Mac OS X 10.5.
You would have to update to OS X 10.6 to be able to use current Firefox releases.

  • Device Central CS3 NOT compatible with Leopard

I just upgraded to OS X Leopard and Device Central CS3 is no
longer usable. OS X says it is "not supported on this

    I don't know what terms you ** SEARCHED **
But the list referenced above (click on the term searched) has quite a few.
If you work with FCP/ Logic/ ProTools, etc in any professional capacity, you may want to wait until the fallout settles. This is especially true if you use 3rd party cards & drivers. Otherwise, get a new drive and install everything from scratch.
