Is the Thunderbolt Port on Macbook Pro 15" 2011 onyl for monitor ?
Hello community
I have a MBP 15" from 2011, Is the Thunderbolt Port on on this only for monitor ?
I'm considering to buy a TB extern HD for backup, want to be sure before I give my money away.
Thanks in advance !
P.
Thunderbolt has got the ability to transfer audio, video and data, and it's only compatible with Thunderbolt devices and adapters. You can also connect monitors.
Additionally, it's compatible with Mini DisplayPort, so if you have a Mini DisplayPort cable or adapter, you can use it, so you don't have to buy other adapters

I'm trying to use a MonoPrice 5106 Mini Display to DVI adapter and a DVI cable to drive an Acer H233H 23" HD display. I'm driving it from the Thunderbolt Port (Mini Display) on a 2011 MacBook Pro. It doesn't work. I use a similar MonoPrice adapter (5311) to drive the HDMI input on this monitor from the Thunderbolt port and it works fine.
I can drive the DVI input on the Acer display from an older iMac using a MonoPrice 4851 Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and this same DVI cable and it works just fine.
So, why won't it work from the MacBook Pro? Do I need the much more expensive Monoprice 6904 dual link DVI adapter ($69)? Why isn't this mentioned in the MacBook Pro manual or on the MacBook Pro support page? MonoPrice says this 5106 adapter should work and if not to try the more expensive 6904 adapter. Need a better reason to buy the more expensive adapter.
Help please.
Thanks,
VeeJust saw your question. Just like it's Apple counterpart, the 5106 is not capable of higher resolutions. You should, in theory, be able to drive your Acer display at lower resolutions with the 5106. And the 5106 may be sufficient for a 23" monitor . . . you'd need to check the maximum resolution for each.
But you definitely do need the 6904 for higher resolutions. That's what 30" monitors and other high-res displays require. -
usb 2.0 port on the right side (beside thunderbolt port) of macbook air 13" 2011 is busted, one of the pins inside the usb port is bent, is this replaceable? saw the pix on ifixit that it is part of the logic board.
The fix is a new logic board. It might be tempting to turn off the computer and start poking around inside to fix it yourself but you risk separating the port from the logic board and doing even more damage.

USB Ports on Macbook Pro (Late 2011) no longer working...
Hey all,
I know there are numurous posts on this but none have seemed to help me.
Today both of my USB ports have stopped working. Two months ago the one next to the thunderbolt port would go in and out and today both of them just don't work at all except to supply power. I can still charge my phone with them but thats it, nothing is recognized when I plug it in.
I've tried the PRAM reset, the SMC reset, manual reset, regular reset, updating the OSX to the latest and nothing has helped. I've read I might have to replace the logic board but I really hope I don't have to resort to that.
I've posted the reports from the System Information and an app called Etrecheck. Hopefully someone will be able to pinpoint the issue.

1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x -
One of the USB ports on MacBook Pro does not work.
Hi,
I purchased a MacBook Pro in Jan '11. Both the USB ports on the laptop were working fine. Recently, I have noticed, any external device connected to the USB port, towards the battery side does not recognize the connection.
Any solutions ?. Is this defect covered under warranty ?.
Regards
Anil MadanAnil,
Try resetting the SMC.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer. -
Does the power port on macbook pro have a fuse of some sort?
my macbook pro is dead it wont charge and there is no green or orange light when its connected. i know it has to do with the power port. any ideas on what the problem is, or commands i could try on a dead computer?

How do you it's not the power adapter that's bad? -
Freezing upon start up and odd "chirping" noise from the base of my Macbook Pro summer 2011.
Sometimes when I start up my macbook pro it freezes and I get the "thinking" icon in place of my mouse. The only way to resolve this is to force shut down my computer. Also, when I put pressure on the bottom of my computer to lift it up I get this odd chirping noise.
That could be the stepping motor in the hard drive making noise. Sometimes the noise means nothing, other times it could mean a problem with the hard drive and it could fail soon. Could be a fan out of allignment. If you can backup your data, do so. If you an get to an Apple genius bar, take it in and have the techs run some tests to find out what the noise is.

Is my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) ready for OS X Mavericks?
Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me out with this problem. When I first read about this new system software and I was eager to download it, but I have been reading a lot of reviews of it and I became quite indecisive about if I should download it or not.
My MacBook Pro is from early 2011 and it´s software is the Mac OS X 10.6.8. I read about many people having different problems with Mavericks, and as my laptop isn´t the latest model I´m not sure if it can function properly with such advanced technology. I really want to have this new software, but I was hoping someone here would tell me if I will risk my MacBook Pro at any rate.
Thanks for your help and time.Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X Mavericks is an improvement of OS X Mountain Lion and works properly for most people. People who have problems with Mavericks often use unsupported apps or had a "failed" upgrade (sometimes it is better to format the hard drive and install OS X again than upgrading).
I have got a Late 2009 iMac which is running OS X Mavericks, and it works correctly. However, as you are not sure, I do not recommend you to upgrade. If you want, you can stay with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and upgrade to the next OS X version released by Apple instead of taking risks.
In case you want to upgrade, make a backup of your files with Time Machine on an external drive and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com With this, you can upgrade without worrying about any problem, because you will not lose anything if you have to reinstall OS X. -
MacBook pro Late 2011 detect external monitor but still not signal on it
Good day.
I have MBP 13" Late 2011
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

As you see it's detected by MBP but says "no signal". I tried all suggestions found here and anywere else but no solution still found. And of course i tried Detect Display and changing resolutions.
Is there any way to make it just work!?I've just found out that my Macbook's Bluetooth spec is Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and my keyboard's Bluetooth is 3.0. Would this be of any issue?

Macbook Pro Early 2011 having issues
Hi all
I hope this message finds you all well.
Sorry that my first post is one begging for help but with a gig 3 weeks away i am bricking it due to the fact that my macbook pro, early 2011 has been playing up of late. It first started having problems when the L shift key became stuck, not physically but after some investigation on here I used Karabiner software to ascertain the issue and disable the key. However since then the computer hasnt run properly at all.
I have tried disk repair and so forth, also run Avast virus check but the issues still persist.
I run Traktor DJ software and for no reason the macbook has started glitching, spinning wheel of doom comes and everything slows down. I can't run simultaneous programmes and certainly can't run my Arkaos Grand VJ software at all which isn't good when we have a big gig in 3 weeks time.
I have run the Etrecheck as shown below but I dont know what to make of it?!
Can someone please give me some advice as I am stuck and cant rely on the laptop for the gig which will throw a real spanner in the works.
Problem description:
Runs slow, spinning wheel frequently, cannot run arkaos software, tractor software glitches regularly, L shift is stuck on (presently disabled using Karabiner software

Problem installing Yosemite on Macbook pro early 2011 10.7.5.
When the installation on my Macbook Pro early 2011 OS X 10.7.5. goes to the page for installing Yosemite, nothing happens and after several minutes it says, "File system verify or repair failed" "Quit the installer to restart your compuer and try again" I have restarted 4 times with the same result
Ended up restoring from Time Machine. This seemed to take care of the errors on the drive that prevented the installation. Will try again.

I have a Macbook pro 13.3 w/ i5 that has no hdmi port. I want to be able to connect the Mac to my TV set to watch Video, Photos and files from Mac to TV.
Is the Thunderbolt port similar to a display port or mini display port? Can I use thunderbolt port to connect thru a mini displayport to HDMI cable or converter?
Been trying to locate a USB to HDMI cable or converter (at a reasonable price) but all I found is a displayport or mini displayport to HDMI cable/converter.

Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port
I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports. The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen. The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!Hello mmholt,

1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer.
