Is there a global setting to never overwrite original file?

Hi.
I opened a .jpg in Raw, made some adjustments, opened it in Ps, and then saved it with a different name as a .psd.
To my horror, it overwrote the original .jpg as well.
I always save my changes as a different name so that doesn't happen.
Luckily for me my files are backed-up online.
Is there something globally I can set in Ps so that the originals are always left alone?

Make Save for Web overwrite original file

Hi,
Has anyone come across a way to make the "Save For Web" function overwrite the existing file rather than export a new one.
There are a few workarounds I've found but all involve manually finding the original file and saving over it – which is cumbersome in the system I'm using.

I made an action to save large batches to a designated "pics" folder. Then when I'm done with a big batch, I just move them to the original folder and let the OS overwrite them. May seem like a lot of work, but I can do a batch of 500 gallery thumbnails in about four minutes and it takes about 30 seconds to move them and replace the originals.

When using "export" Preview overwrites original file.

After opening and making changes to an image file, Preview, using “save” or “export” ( with file renamed when using Export) is overwriting the original file. How do I prevent this?
Or, another and probably better way to ask the question. What is the equivalent of “ Save as” in the Mavericks version of Preview?

Preview will Autosave as you work. If you want to Revert the changes, use the Revert To command in the File menu.
You can Duplicate the current version and save it, then Revert the original if you fail to start with a Duplicate.
Since it is Autosaving, Save As… won't change the results you see.
There might be a way to disable autosave, but I don't know what it is.

How to save for web AND overwrite original files with Action?

I want to compress a batch of images with "save for web" using a Photoshop Action, and I also want to preserve my folder structure and overwrite source files. The structure is important because it's complex and needs to be structured this way.
The Problem:
When I choose "save for web", I must define a destination. What happens is all optimized files from within the structure are saved in a single location.
Here's an example of the folder structure
Folder A
     - Subfolder A1
     - Subfolder A2
Folder B
     - Subfolder B1
     - Subfolder B2
          -Subfolder B2.2
Folder C
     -Subfolder C1

Just learn how to use the Image Processor, Image Processor Pro, or Dr. Brown's Services 1-2-3 in Photoshop and/or Bridge.

Save for web not overwriting original files in cs6

It doesn't always happen but when I use save for web to save an image it goes through all the motions as normal but when I go to view the image, I find that it hasn't overwritten the original file. Has anyone else experienced this, it has happened to other people in the studio too so it might be something to do with our setup?

Are you on a mac? If you have a finder window open of the file you are trying to overwrite (or the file is open somewhere else), and it is selected in that window with the preview showing, Save For Web does not overwrite it as it's technically "In Use". Either close the window or deselect the item. This seems to happen to me more when the file is on a server but can also happen on the local disk. I am now in the habit of saving as filename_1 and then renaming them afterwards.
I would imagine you would get a similar story on a Windows machine but I have no way of testing this.

Is there a global setting to turn off black border on swfs?

I started this question in the Framemaker forum as I assumed it was a Framemaker issue..

but it seems to be an Acrobat thing, so am trying here as I've not used Acrobat much.
My problem is that all my swfs (imported into Framemaker 12 and then saved as pdf), show up with an unwanted black border around them. So there is this dialogue box which comes up when you right click an imported swf... and I can turn off the border on individual swfs after the pdf is produced. Could anyone tell me if there is a global equivalent or a way to stop them happening in the first place? Would be very much appreciated.

You need to file a feature request for Framemaker - it doesn't use Acrobat to create PDFs. The default for embedding Rich Media in Acrobat is 'no border', but the FM team clearly have another opinion on what their users want.

Is there a global background color setting for all apps?

This pertains to a DESKTOP COMPUTER uisng 10.7 (Lion) - not iPad or iPhone or iXyz
I've spent the last half hour on the forums but each talk about a SPECIFIC application's background. I'm tired of staring into a WHITE lightbulb when switching applications.   Most professional applications (like final cut pro or photoshop) have a dark grey or beige background that is restful on the eyes.     That is usually easily set by navigating preferences.   Top web pages know how to use dark backgrounds to make the colors really stand out.
My question pertains to a GLOBAL setting so that ALL applications have the same background color (unless specifically set within).   Windows had this for over a decade. Is Mac behind Windows?   Seems like this should be under Settings==>Display or Desktop (but I can't find it).
I've seen discussions about creating a rectangular window (I presume in Photoshop) then saving it as "template" -- but there is no save-as "template" setting in Photoshop or WHERE to put it -- or active the template.   Lots of missing instructions if so.
This ain't rocket science fellas -- could one of you geniuses point me in the right direction with some SPECIFIC navigation (ie: go here, click this, save that, do this).

You're confusing being behind Windows with "don't want to". I'm sure Apple's engineers could add the ability for users to play with the desktop theme if they wanted, but they choose not to. They never have.
However, there are third party options for that. This one looks pretty interesting. Flavours is another.

No, there isn't any setting that you are missing. Have you tried force closing FaceTime, and resetting your iPad?
In order to close FaceTime, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that does not make a difference, you could try resetting all settings, if you reset all settings you will have to enter all of the device preferences again in the settings app. That takes some time to accomplish, but you will not lose my data, media, apps or anything like that. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.
If that doesn't help, the next step would be to restore the iOS software. Backup your iPad first, restore the iOS, then restore the backup.

Create a directory "documents and setting/default user/application data/sun/java/deployment/" with the file deployment.properties is working but is not good for the existing users. This is good uniquely for new users.

{Windows Directory}\Sun\Java\Deployment\
The value of the {Windows Directory} is determined by using the Win32 API GetWindowsDirectory.
So for example, on XP, the system config file is:
c:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
The settings in this system config file will be used by all users on the system.

This is true.
I can get the system install to work if I add the parameter:
deployment.system.cachedir=C\:\\testcache
to the deployment.properties file found under:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment
but it will NOT work by adding it to the:
C:\WINDOWS\Sun\Java\Deployment
directory. It just creates a new default one in the user's folder.
What am I doing wrong?
If there is not a way to globally set the System Cache location, then this isn't much better than the user cache for being able to "install" the software once on the PC and let any user that signs in access that application.
We had high hopes for this, since this functionality was taken away from us once the java cache started being stored in the user's folders.
More details:
I just tried setting the mandatory=true setting and it tells me that it is not allowed to start because it can't find the
deployment.properties in the same folder (full path is displayed) but I know it is there, because it is the same folder. I even double checked the spelling.
Maybe there is a bug in the way it finds that properties file, or maybe I need to include something in that file that I didn't find in documentation?
All it has in it is the one line:
deployment.system.cachedir=C\:\\testcache
Can anybody help shed light on this?
It seems to be a bug that it can't find the deployment.properties file in the 'system' folder.

Is Varispeed involved here? I think not, as there is no "pitch only" choice.
Do I individually use Time and PItch machine destructively on all the audio tracks? That seems like a lot of work. Is there a way to batch process audio tracks with the Time and Pitch machine? It seems to work with only one region at a time.

I'm not exactly sure what I did, but the 'Advanced' tool started working. Two things I did just before it started working:
1. Set 'System Preferences | Security | Firewall' from 'Allow all incoming connections' to 'Allow only essential services'
2. I think I also clicked 'Advanced...' on that page and then 'Open Log...' on the window that opened. That caused 'Console' to open and display 'LOG FILES | /var/log | appfirewall.log'. I also used that same instance of 'Console' to look at 'LOG FILES | /var/log | cups | error_log.
3. I noticed a line in cups error_log '[CGI] No address specified and no Address line in /private/etc/cups/snmp.conf...' so I started Terminal and ran 'more /private/etc/cups/snmp.conf'
After doing the above that I noticed the drop-down menus of the 'Advanced' tool were no longer greyed out. I can't be sure exactly when the 'Advanced' tool menus activated relative to the events I listed above. Maybe I 'touch'-ed a log file? If I have the time I may do another 'erase and install' and check the status of the files I mentioned right after the installation.

Cookies set to "Never" but Safari now accepts all cookies anyway

In looking closely at cookies accepted "only from sites I visit" I noticed that it actually includes a lot of third-party cookies, so I keep Preferences set to Never unless I'm accessing a site that must accept them (for example, New York Times). However, in the last few days something has changed (I don't know what that is), and now all cookies are accepted even though I have Preferences set to Never. Seems like this change coincides with the latest Safari update from a couple of days back. Is there anything I can do to stop it accepting any and every cookie? Thanks.

I just installed 10.6.8 and have the same issue. It appears 10.6.8 broke Safari. I hate cookies, and always have Safari set to "never". If ad companies want to pay me to track my web use, that's one thing, but I'm certainly not going to let them do it for free! I'm quite frustrated this slipped through Apple's QA, and hopefully they will fix this soon. In the meantime, FireFox works fine. I normally use Safari for general browsing, and FireFox for the occaisonal site I need cookies for (and I have FireFox set to clear all information upon closing). If you do banking online, you certainly don't want cookies laying around on your machine. Unrelated, it's important to delete Flash cookies, which most people don't do. These are buried in user/library/preferences/macromedia
You need to lock the "#SharedObjects" folder (press command+I on the folder and click "lock"). Then also click throguh the "macromedia.com" folder to "sys" and lock that folder. A few sites will require you to unlock the "#SharedObjects" folder to play their flash video, but most don't require this. I dropped the Flash folder in my "places" section so I can quickly access it when needed. Flash is evil stuff, no getting around it.
It would be nice if our web browsers could block Flash cookies as well. At any rate, Apple should fix this Safari cookie issue ASAP!

Yes, you can. I believe it is in the Hyperion\products\biplus\lib folder for 11.1.1.3, but you may have to search for it. Look for fr_repserver.properties. Change the "     Prompt User POV" property from OFF to ON. You will have to restart the following services.
1.     Hyperion Financial Reporting – Print Server
2.     Hyperion Financial Reporting – Report Server
3.     Hyperion Financial Reporting – Scheduler Server
4.     Hyperion Financial Reporting – Web Application (might be on different server)

Globally set "float" for my windows... and Skins?

I really liked how PS would allow me to open up any .psd etc, in it's own floating window, so I could select then drag an image from one doc to the other.
Cant do that with the default settings in CS5...but I've found a way to 'force' that for each doc I open AFTER I open it via the top nav bar icon to enable the float for that doc...
IS there a way to globally set CS5 to only ever open any PS doc with that already set to the float window setting?
Can't find it so far...but surely that must exist, right?
RE: my subject item on Skins...the overall "gray-ness" of the CS5 GUI gets me down...I also can not find out how to "skin" the gray away....can you?

huge 27" HP that is powered by a nVidea card...absolutely great look/feel and the workstation powering same is a great Dell box.
that said, it's not the monitor, nor the ambient light here at the office..it's the dang all gray look that bugs me the most...then the poor contrast tween the type on that gray...then the overall gray top bar too...
just too too gray for me. if this continues to bug me, I'll just go back to CS3....dont need any of the new features in CS5....and the 'comfort' of using an interface that is easy to use is more imp to me than being "current" with versions ever would be...
can't be alone on this either as I've read many many threads on this - just google for this and you'll see many think same as me....an app should be
transparent in it's GUI usage....not a hindrance...

Where can I set the decimal notation for all users? Is there a global default setting for this?
I need to display numbers as xxx,xxx,xxx.xx.
Each individual user can set this in their Maintain User Profile -->Default settings.
But I need to have the system default for EVERY user to xxx,xxx,xxx.xx.
