Make sure you read the system requirements. Also install Rosetta if you want Power PC applications to run.

I'm using a macbook pro with version 10.6.8 installed. Whenever I try to install my software updates, it immediately asks me to restart my computer to finish the installation. After doing so and signing back on to my account, nothing has changed and no updates have been installed. It still says the same 8 items need to be installed, and the same process occurs again. Any idea how I can fix this?
You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

April NavarroThese are user forums. You are not speaking to Apple here. You cannot get MS products for free. You can purchase the student version of Office for OS X from MS. You can download a 30 day free trial that you can fully activate by purchasing a license key for $139.00.
You can download a free copy of Libre Office which is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows but runs on Macs. I don't know how compatible the presentation module is to Powerpoint. -

Sorry it took me a while to come back. Anyway, I cleared out the old Xcode files and went into the Developers Download area and selected to download 4.6.3 and was presented with this window
I clicked on Savefile and it downloaded. I was intrigued as to why this would work as it was exactly what I had done before. Out of interest I decided to issue the download again and this time it created a zero byte disk image and a "part" file of 1.6mB. I shall just have to put that behind me (accepting that I don't understand why one download should work and all the precious attempts should fail) and move on.

The solution so far is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch EXCEPT the software update 1.0. However, I'm trying to find out if anyone has installed the Firmware update, which requires the software update to be installed first, and if they are running smoothly.
???I just restarted then tried to open InDesign again and it let me download a java update that seems to have fixed it.

You mean for Office apps? That, I don't know for sure as I don't use MS Office on my Mac. I would check to see if there is some sort of MS Office uninstaller that needs to be run before dragging the icons to Trash. Either from one of the Office apps Help or About or search the Internet for a solution.

That is a LOT of log-in items for a compute with 4GB RAM. Some are hard to avoid but Excel is a big program that can be easily launched from the Dock. I don't know what "Inspiration 8" is but likely the same advice will apply. -
The buggy Retina MacBook Pro EFI version 1.0
After having installed the Retina MacBook Pros EFI version 1.0, I have severe problems in waking up the MBP. It take up to 15 seconds until the MBP is operative. Who is resonsible for such a buggy firmare? What can I do to get rid of the firmare and bring the MBP back to speed?
I've got a Time Machine backup. I just want to change the OS, not my data or software. Can I restore as you say? I've been trying to read about it and I'm definitely not a Mac noob, but it seems difficult.

Apple MacBook/Pro Software Update 1.0?
On versiontracker.com, there is an update called Apple MacBook/Pro Software Update 1.0. The desciption says:
"This update enables file system journaling on MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers. Some MacBook and MacBook Pro systems were shipped with file system journaling turned off. Journaling is recommended on all Mac computers as a preventative measure against file corruption."
It is recommended for Mid 2007 MacBooks
I ran the Software Updater on my MacBook which I bought in June and this update did not come up as needed. Has anyone else installed this? If it does not come up in the Updater, does that mean I don't need it?
ThomThom you might try going to Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility->click on the name of your HD (probably something like "Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it) in the left had corner and look at the bottom of the window under "Format:" It should read "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" If that's the case then you probably don't need to worry about it.

MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 continues to appear
This has been the first really strange issue since I upgraded to Leopard. Ever since the MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 in Software Update, it continues to appear as if it was not installed. If I look at my installation log, it shows that I have installed it about 9 times since it was released. Here are the last few entries in my installation log:

Is it safe to ignore this update? What is going on? Is there something wrong with my system? I haven't noticed any other problems.. I have no idea how Mac OS X determines if I need an update or not.OK, here's what i did:
1) navigate to the: /Library/Updates sub-directory
(as in: "Macintosh HD" - "Library" folder - "Updates" folder
2) there should be a file named, "index.plist" - this is
the definition file for the update - i suspect this should
be removed by the Updater once the update is complete.
3) rename the file (don't delete it) ... i renamed the
file to, "index.plist.onhold"
you probably don't have to, but i rebooted the system, to
ensure nothing broke. afterwards, i did a "Software Update"
and it reported the system is up to date. -
