Is there a NAS box that works well with OSX

I've always struggled with NAS boxes & OSX.  Sure, I can connect them up, and copy files to and from a mac, but eventually I always seem to run into issues.  Suddenly I can no longer access the files, or I can no longer connect at all, or it fails to connect with a specific user, etc.   I end up grovelling around support forums, typing sudo this & sudo that and eventually I can access the files again - until the next time.  They seeem to be more trouble than they are worth.  At least for me.  I've had these problems with Leopard, Snow Leopard & now with Lion.
I've got a macbook pro that only I use, plus an iMac that all the family use (including me).  What I want to be able to do is to have a NAS box set up with a private share for each member of the family that only they can access, plus a public share that everyone can copy files to and from.
I want to be able to access the public share from both computers at the same time.
Suppose my wife is logged on on the iMac, and she's streaming a movie from the public share using iTunes to the ATV2.  I want to be able to fast-user-switch to my account & access the files in the public share, and also my private share.
I want to be able to access files on my private share from both my macbook pro and the iMac.  At the same time.
I want family members to be able to access their private shares, and also the public share from their Windows laptops as well as the iMac.
I can't see the problem with doing these things.  As long as permissions a managed by the NAS box not the individual pcs & macs it should be easy.  But of course it isn't!
Does anyone run this sort of setup, where it works seamlessly?  If so, what sort of NAS box are you using?
If not, maybe the way to go would be to get a Mac Mini and set it up with Lion Server as a file server.  Would that work better?

You're welcome - make sure you follow Epson's instructions when you get it; don't know if they've changed it, but about 2 years ago, I had to connect it via USB first before connecting it wirelessly; also had to get the MAC address via the setup on the LCD panel so the router could recognize it.
Some of that has gotten easier/automatic with Lion, so just be sure you follow whatever the quick setup sheet says. Their support is pretty good, they usually respond within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Can someone recommend a NAS device that works well with Macs?

I need to have a NAS (network attached storage) device that can be freely accessed by windows and mac computers. I rashly purchased an HP Mediavault; it was only $300 and has 2 500GB drives that I configured as raid-1 for safety. however if I load up a folder with 4000 files in it and browse to that directory, the mac finder thinks about this for say 30 seconds before it lists the files. The Windows machine can view the files in perhaps 4 seconds. I know that Macs have a slow file system but watching the little light blink on the NAS box and waiting so long is getting real annoying. Has anyone found a box that works well with macs and has good performance? These devices are so cheap now they must have crappy processors and stupid firmware. Perhaps someone can recommend a model that has some snap. I also need remote access via the web, and the insane HP software can only upload single files, can't upload a folder, which when you are working with 30,000 files like I am is no fun at all!

It's not really the brand as it is available printer drivers. Just be sure you verify that there is an available OS X printer driver.
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
Check the manufacturer's website for available printer drivers for any model in which you are interested.

  • Is there a good free qraphic equalizer that works well with iTunes?

Is there a good free graphic equalizer that works well with iTunes?

I find plenty of audio editing tools but few playback controls.
Example- The equalizer in iTunes is rather bland.
Any old stereo system has a better display.
The controls are icing on the cake for audio
but I'd pay for a complete array of adjustments.
The more lights, bells, whistles, the better.
PS-That would also make an awesome screen saver

  • Are there other internet browsers that work well displaying websites with a lot of Flash content?

Other than the browser that came on the Samsung Droid Charge....
Are there other internet browsers that work well displaying websites with a lot of Flash content?
    Thanks in advance!

I use Dolphin Browser 6.0. Its faster than 5.0 and has no issues with Flash.  I have used flash and used the Beta 6.0 and now the actual released version. Its the best so far. It has tabs like a normal computer browser and even has a gesture feature to do scrolling.
Others are Firefox which has NO flash. Then there is SkyFire which is ok, uses its servers to compress data and show it on your phone, its quick but I found the quality of images not as good as stock.
Opera Mobile and Mini do the same as skyfire.
I personally just didnt care for Xscope of Miren browsers.  Didnt care for the feel of Xscope and Miren was developed in China and is modeled after Iphone Browser.
Try em all if you want, biggest benefit of the aftermarket browser is you can sync certain accounts (dolphin with google, firefox with firefox) and instead of storing the Cache info using phone memory you can now save the data and the web browser on the SD card.

  • Controller that works well with Logic??

Can anyone tell me if the M-audio icontrol will work with Logic 8? I see that it is designed for Garageband. I would love to have real controls for record, play, stop, etc... If there is a controller out there that works well with Logic, please let me know.

Potential warning on the Edirol keyboards: I bought one of their earlier ones (PCR50, I think), and the keys have mostly gone bad after a couple years, despite being treated very well. There are a lot of people over at Harmony Central reporting the same problem. This new unit may have solved the problem, don't know, but I personally will think more than twice before buying another Edirol keyboard.

  • I have a new Airport Extreme that works well with my IMac but is intermittent with our Windows 7 PC.  Any ideas?

I have a new Airport Extreme that works well with my IMac but is intermittent with our Windows 7 PC.  Any ideas?

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

  • Looking for a Digital Handycam that works well with the PB. Any suggestions

    Hi people,

So i'm now on the market for a handycam, as I want to return it.
Does anyone here have any suggestions as to a good camera, for basic home video's, that works well with the PB, for editing reasons?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • HD camcorder that works well with iMovie - recommendations

Any recommendation for a reasonably price HD camcorder that works well with iMovie?  I've been researching the Sony HDR-CX260V.  It's on the list of compatible cameras but says it will not work when it's set to 1080/60p.
I just want something that I can plug in and import video without a lot of hassle.
    Thanks!

Here is an Apple published list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2948 . Just about any DV, HDV and AVCHD camcorder buit by the big Japanese manufacturer's: Canon, JVC, Panasonic or Sony will work, even the newer one's, not on the list. Don't bother with the new Sanyo if you want simple Plug-n-play. This web site: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ratings.php# , has good reviews, so pick your priorities, costs, etc. Best of luck.

No, because almost every projector will work as well with a MB Pro as with any other computer, when the same connection protocol is used.

  • Is there any all in one that works seemlessly with OSX wirelessly?

    Morning all,
I am replacing my HP PSC 2510, I can only print over wireless no other functionality, I will buy another all in one with wireless, but I want all functionality available, fax, scan, print? Any suggestions of proven success?

We've had reports that the Canon models with built-in wireless work well - I think the models are iP4200R and 5200R.

  • HT204389 I am looking for a descent bluetooth headset that works well with siri... any suggestions?

I seem to not be able to find any bluetooth headset that really works will with siri... are there any?

The iPad does not print via Bluetooth, unless there's a third-party app somewhere that supports that (which I doubt, but I don't say anything is impossible). The iPad prints only via WiFi, and only to printers that support AirPrint or that are connected to a computer that does. If you look to the right under "more like this" you'll find other discussions on this same question, but none offer any really good solution that I have seen.
    Regards.

  • Hard Drives that work well with my board

    Hi,
My current hard drive situation is shown in my sig below. I'm putting the 40GB Maxtor IDE drive in another computer I have lying around and was thinking about replacing it with a more modern IDE drive. I have several questions though:
    1) From personal experience which hard drives work best with the neo 4?
    2) Is it worth using a new IDE drive for my OS and then using the 80GB Maxtor S-ATA drive for storage or use the new IDE drive I plan to buy for storage?
The IDE drive I like the look of at the moment is one that won best buy in Computer Shopper. It is: Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160GB ATA-133 8MB Cache
    See: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/hitachi_ide.html
I like the look of it but is it the best choice?

Heres my 2 cents.  After watching posts on this forum regarding sata versus pata hdds, it seems to me that users start to have problems when they mix and match between the two types of hdds.  I dont know if this is a software or bios issue, but I have not had any problems with any sata hdd that I have owned (I sold my 160gb seagate ncq sata1 hdd before I purchased the hitachi sata2 hdds).
I have these 2 hitachi sata2 80gb drives in a raid0 format and they are fast (or at least its all in my head anyway to justify my purchase).  Anyway, at $55 per 80gb hdd, its what I would recommend.  The only way to get something faster is to purchase a WD raptor hdd.
Plus, the hitachi hdds have a feature that if you want to make them noiseless, you can...but you have to slow down the hdd to sata1 speeds.  Neat if you want to silence your rig.
Here is the hdd that I purchased at ZZF:

    John,
You may be able to find a Color LaserJet CP1518ni for around that price if you look around. At least here in the states I've found it for $299 and less, although it retails at $399 which is a bit higher then you are looking for. It is the least expensive color laser printer we are currently selling (in the US at least) and it includes PostScript 3 emulation.
    Just trying to help.

  • Can anyone recommend a printer that works well with the IMAC?

I am new to the Mac world and bought an IMAC with Iphoto08. My main reason was for printing photos and using the great graphics of an IMAC. But, I have no printer as of yet because I don't know which printer would work best with the IMAC. Please helppppppp

    Nikki,
    click on this Epson link:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oi d=63059194
The 88+ is a very good inexpensive printer ..... it is temporarily "out of stock", but press the "Notify Me" button on the web page. You will also need a printer cable sold separately, but which Epson lists when you are able to order the printer.
Also check their ink jet photo-type print papers. (I do not work for Epson .... but I've used their products for years and never had any problems). I know of two instances where the printers were duds, but Customer Service replaced them without a hassle.
