Is there a single click VNC/screen sharing server for OS X?

First, if this is posted in the wrong section then please forgive the error and relocate the post to the appropriate section.
I'm looking for a small distributable single click screen sharing system for tech support purposes. I generally support Windows users but sometimes need to quickly gain access to remote OSX systems from fairly clueless users. Every minute I spend explaining something that the user does not want to know or does not need to know is a waste of our mutual time. Thus I'm looking for something similar to UVNC single click for OSX. That is a distributable VNC server reduced to about 250KB or less that can be configured to automatically connect to a listening viewer on launch.
Is there a program or perhaps an executable script file that will initiate such a connection?

Start with Applications -> Automator. You can have it "Record" the setting up of the VPN server of your choice.
Then there is AppleScript, but for me that generally requires a book and Google searches to find examples close to what I want to do.
It may be possible to do some stuff via Unix shell scripts (sh, bash, awk, perl, python, ruby, etc...) and then invoke this via an Automator action, an AppleScript command, or just wrap the shell script using Platypus (search Platypus at VersionTracker.com).
If you need to configure the customer's Mac OS X firewall, that might also be an Automator action, or since the firewall is really the Unix ipfw (man ipfw), that could be a use for shell scripting.
If you need to fetch stuff from the web as part of your installation, you could use something like /usr/bin/curl in a shell script.
Setting up automation can be difficult and I'm not making light of the task. What might look like a good approach may find that the last 5 inches just can be done and you have to back track and use something else. And then there are the variables created by the fact that every customer will be different and you will find that some expected situation doesn't exist because the customer has customized something.
NOTE: The Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) can be setup to make a reverse connection. It may even be possible to use an Automator script to setup that connection for you, specifying the address.of.your.VNC.client and port number you are using.
Or create an AppleScript (which might be more robust than Automator).
Or establish an example reverse setup, then using "ps -axlww" see what the actual server command line looks like, then create a shell script wrapped by Platypus to do this for the customer.
OK, your turn to go chasing down dead-ends and practice backing out. After all you are the one that is going to get paid, I'm just doing this for fun
However, if you need to configure a customer's router that could be a problem as every darn one of them is different.

  • Please make the camera available on the single-click lock screen.

It just makes sense.  People want the camera readily available.  Having it on the double-click lock screen is good.  Having it on the single-click lock screen is better.
    It's that simple.
Also, double-clicking the home button is hit-or-miss at best.  At worst, it just plain *****.
Please put the camera on the single-click lock screen.

  • Screen Sharing works for alien hosts but not for LAN hosts

    Hello!
I am having a really strange problem in a customer network. The network is a local private network with one MacOS Server 10.6.8 and around 12 iMacs running MacOS 10.6.8. The server is running headless in cellar so the user maintain the backup via screen sharing from an iMac to the server.
Since a few weeks they can not login to the server via screen sharing from any local host BUT I can login from my MBP (alien) via ARD or Screen Sharing without any problem. Even hosts connected to the network via VPN can connect to the server via screen sharing.
    In short:
Every local host gets a message that login is not possible and my MBP and VPN-hosts get connected without any problems with the same credentials.
At the local clients I get this message in system.log:
    Oct 28 09:33:41 verwaltung1 LKDCHelper[228]: Starting (uid=501)
    Oct 28 09:33:48 verwaltung1 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[166] (com.apple.Kerberos.renew.plist): Throttling respawn: Will start in 530 seconds
Oct 28 09:34:17 verwaltung1 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer[195]: CGSKeyTranslateInitialize: KLGetCurrentKeyboardLayout or KLGetKeyboardLayoutProperty is not available, fall back to USA keymap
and at the server I get:
    Oct 28 09:33:48 solserv AppleVNCServer[11503]: no such user: adminloc@LKDC:SHA1.DE03ABCC86F74D11AD139E44388D6B94155B4D9E: 2
When I connect from VPN or my MBP I get no messages in system.log.
I tried to kickstart ARD at the server but it does not change anything, I bound the clients to OpenDir of the server with no effect also.
I do not have any idea what is happening here. Every help is welcome,
    Christop

    Hello MrHoffmann!
changeip says "The names match. There is nothing to change."
To give more infos, the server and all the clients are connected to the same network switch, all belong to 192.168.183/24 and when I use my MBP, it is connected via WLAN and gets an IP-address from this server with an IP from this range. my MBP is in the same broadcast domain.
VPN clients connect via PPTP to the gateway (192.168.183.1) and get IP addresses assigned from 192.168.183.48-52.
There is no routing between the clients and the server.
There is no other problem - every client reaches the server for file serivces (AFP/SMB), smtp, imap, DHCP and DNS.
BTW. screen sharing from the clients worked without a problem when I first setup the network about 1 year ago, but since a few weeks no client that belongs to this network can use screen sharing except for my MBP when I am at customer site.
    History:
The new SLS is a replacement for an old Windows 2000 Server. Both servers ran in parallel for some time but within different IP-networks (all Macs at 192.168.183/24 - all Windows at 192.168.2/24) the gateway routed between both networks. But now it is time to switch off every windows computer because every service now runs at the SLS. AFAIK the windows 2000 Server is the last Windows machine in the network. We switched off DHCP at the windows server and switched on DHCP at the SLS a few weeks ago. Hm .... maybe there is something wrong? But the clients have fixed ip-addresses.
Still wondering what is going on here, bye,
    Christoph

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

  • VNC / Screen Sharing SLOOOW after Chicken of the VNC connection

We have a vacation home with a Mac Mini installed behind a standard cable modem / router.  I occasionally VNC using the Lion Screen Sharing function (Connect to Server aka Command-K, vnc://ipaddressofvacationhome).  I have the ports open on my router, everything worked well up until today.
I was having some redraw issues with Screen Sharing over the internet, so I thought I'd try another VNC client to see if that worked any faster / better.  In Sharing/ Screen Sharing I enabled "VNC viewers may control my screen with password" (usually i just login with the user account of the machine with the built in client.
Anyway, I connected this way with COTVNC once and didn't like it, so uninstalled it and went back to use my built in Lion VNC app.  Now the VNC session is crawling slow (10-20 seconds to register a click) and I've tried everything to get it back from restarting to turning screen sharing off and on, unchecking VNC viewers may control my screen with password... everything.  It seems that COTVNC has crippled my VNC connection and I have no idea why.  A google search came up with nothing, so I thought I'd come here.  The weird thing is... it's not physically taxing the cpu or anything, becuase if I connect via teamviewer that is also installed that is snappy.  It's only when I use VNC.  Sure I could continue to use teamviewer, but I liked the response time using the native client.
Any ideas?  Is there a way to reset the VNC service or something to clear the cobwebs of COTVNC away?

I should also add that this mac mini in the vacation home is headless (no monitor).  I'm not sure if COTVNC could have messed up some video setting when it connected which the machine couldn't repaid upon disconnection because of the lack of montior attached.

  • VNC Screen Sharing with a running Mac without a confirmation

    Thank you for any suggestions!
I need to regularly check with another Mac that has a static IP and is always running. Both machines run Snow Leopard and I use the command Connect To Server in Finder to connect to VNC://….
So far I managed to ask for confirmation and have someone in the location confirm to establish Screen Sharing, but I have not been able to do the same without asking for permission first.
I don’t want to use the first option By asking for permission
but the second option As a registered user.
    The error message is:
    Authentication failed to “server”
Please verify you have entered the correct name and password.
Does the user who wants to establish the connection have to be a different one from the one who is currently logged in? I have tried both, the same user and a different registered user on the machine.
What else could I do differently?
One is a Mac Pro and one is a Mac Mini both run 10.6.8

I have been doing this for years...
Do you have a real world static IP or is it behind a router.  If behind a router:
    1.  look into No-IP for its free (manually renewable monthly) or paid services to convert it to a real IP and domain-style name; and
    2.  open port 5900 on your router to the mac's local static IP that you want to control.
Go into System Preferences:Sharing and click on Computer Settings... and uncheck that anyone may ask for permission.
I then just use the GO menu in Finder on the outside Mac as in this example:
vnc://noriker.noipnet.net (or suitable substitute that No-IP will provide for you) and log in with my account name and password for that particular Mac.
    Does that work for you?

  • Right click in Screen Sharing causes Expose on remote machine

I have a Mac Pro at home. I have a hot corner for Exposé. I have a mighty mouse at both the host and client machine. In both cases, Exposé from a mouse pinch is disabled.
When I try and drag a file from one place to another on the remote machine, Exposé is triggered. I also use RemoteTap on my iPhone - when I connect using it, it forces a "spaces exposé" (shows all the spaces on the remote machine) and quits the Dock. I imagine these two may be related. Has anyone else seen this and know what may be causing it?
I should add that the desktop machine was a migration from my laptop. I have looked everywhere I can think of, but on the remote machine, when I am in front of it, Exposé is not just triggered without a real trigger. With the remote sessions, I have a hard time using the machine without exposé triggering.
    Thanks in advance for help...

I have the same problem with the dragging a file activating expose. SO ANNOYING!!!! It makes screen sharing (one of the main reasons I pay for MobileMe) absolutely useless. It can be solved, however, by disabling all hot corners. While that's a semi easy workaround, its incredibly annoying to have to do that each time I want to remotely log in. I really hope they fix it soon or they lost a MobileMe customer. I will just use a free VNC program at that point.

  • Screen Sharing Broken for Network Account Admins Mac OS X Server

    Re: OS X 10.8.4, Server.app 2.2.1
After replacing a failed Airport Extreme -- and the resulting changes in server IP address -- Screen sharing is now broken for "Network" account administrators. "Local" adminstrators can screen share successfully.
When logging in as a Local Admin, the System Log contains a single entry:
Authentication: SUCCEEDED :: User Name: localadmin :: Viewer Address: 10.0.1.6 :: Type: DH
When logging as a Network Admin, a similar line appears:
Authentication: SUCCEEDED :: User Name: testnetwork :: Viewer Address: 10.0.1.6 :: Type: DH
followed by screen-fulls of other log messages, eventually ending -- a minute or two later -- with:
    screensharingd[77693]: uid 1034 not found
screensharingd[77693]: unable to get width and height of display.
at which point the client sees a "Error: Network connection lost." alert. 1034 is the UID of "testnetwork", as seen in
    dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -list /Users UniqueID
So apparently, Network users are authenticated, but screensharingd cannot find the user.
changeip -checkhostname returns "success". Just to be sure, I  "Updated the Host Name" as suggested by the "Network Configuration Has Changed" alert in Server.app -- problem remains.
How does one debug this? Are there more comprehensive debug logging options available for screensharingd or login window? Anyone else seen this problem?

    Linc: thanks for your inquiry.
Here are more steps I've taken to solve this problem:
    1) From a Time Machine backup to a test partition, I restored the server from before the failure of the base station and found that the login problems were present then.
    2) On yet another test partition, I created from scratch a new OS X Server. Added a local administrator, and a network admistrator and discovered the same problem: network administrators cannot screen share, although in this case, they are simply unauthorized.
Using dscl, things look OK: there is a /Local/Default/Groups/com.apple.access_screensharing that lists only the admin group, and the admin group contains networkAdmin.
Furthermore, I can log in as the networkadmin from the login window, as "Other".
Furthermore, I can ssh into the server using the networkadmin credential.
I used odutil to boost the logging OpenDirectory log level. The logs are very verbose, but to my eyes, it looks like OD recognizes the networkUser, but screensharingd fails to authorize. See logs below.
Can someone confirm that screen sharing from network admin accounts works at all? Is there a way to elevate screensharingd logging to find out more about why it rejects network admins?
    TIA

  • Screen sharing fails for one user

    Hi
I have an iMac and MacBook Pro, both running Snow Leopard 10.6.5. I have enabled screen sharing on the iMac, and can log in with one of my other user accounts (Greg). This works fine.
When i am on my MBP, logged in as Joe, and logged in as Joe on the iMac, i always get an "Authentication failed", but i can connect as Greg ok... I thought it was to do with the currently logged in user having the same short name, so i tried logging in as Greg on the iMac, and connecting as Joe from the MBP, but still no success.
Is there anything i can check?
    Thanks
    Joe.

Identical short user names on the different computers shouldn't be a problem - I have multiple Macs with identical short user names and have no problem.
As an aside, you don't need to already be logged in on the other computer; the VNC connection, if VNC login is permitted for that iMac user, would simply present the remote VNC client with its login screen, at which point you could login to the iMac as any user that you wanted, even though you made the VNC connection as someone else. Similarly, regardless of who is at the console on the iMac, the authorized VNC client user on the MBP can connect and view(/control) the screen(/keyboard/mouse).
In the iMac's Sys Prefs Sharing, when Screen Sharing is highlighted, what does it say for "Allow Access for:"?
In the iMac's Sys Prefs Security under the Firewall tab, is the Firewall on? If so, in "Advanced..." is the "Block All Incoming Connections" checkbox unchecked? In the application list there, what does it say about incoming connections for Screen Sharing?
Finally, the iMac and the MBP are on the same home LAN, i.e., the MBP is not having to traverse through your home router's firewall, correct?

  • I cannot connect to the server – screen sharing, Server Preferences,...

    hello
I have a problem with xserver. Everything seems to be working ok, however, one day system started to break down.
I cannot connect to the server through *screen sharing* neither through internet, nor through local net. Even after restart login wont shows up.

  • I'm Unable to 'double click' when screen sharing from iMac to MBP

I want to use my new iMac to display the Macbooks screen but the double click doesn't seem to work ( most of the time ) !
I set up realVNC client on the iMac as well and the same problem happens, I can connect OK to windows hosts and can double click OK. This is a really odd problem it must be related to the VNC server built into OSX, is there a better/less buggy one that's free to use and easy enough to install ? I've never actually tried VNC to my MBP before.. I've recently started using the Remote desktop client from m$ too which seems OK
I've also managed to get Virtual box to reproducible hang my entire system, I thought thte iMac had overheated and shut down at first, the top gets pretty warm.
I am in love with this thing, 4 cores are definitively better than 2 !
    Simon

I believe I may have fixed this. My wireless router kept on needing resets so I changed its 'channel' to Auto from hard set to 10 ( default setting infact ;0) )..
Since I did that, the Doubleclick on VNC to MBP is working now and no more WIFI router reboots since. I Don't know if this is related to the new iMac on the net seems like a weird coincidence though if not. I can't really think of the reason for this BTW..

  • Is there a way to configure screen sharing to mirror?

In past versions of OS X, if you used VNC to screen share, it mirrored the display. Now in 10.7, it displays a logon screen. Is there a way to revert it to the old way??

    Hi dosers;

  • Is there a way to ban screen sharing ips

Hello, Is there a way to block incoming scene sharing requests? I gave my ip to a friend, then unfriended him and he keeps pestering me with requests. Any help is appreciated, Jack

    AT T (the phone company).
You can use DynDNS to set up an IP address that always exists, and is associated with whatever ypur ISP decides your IP address will be this round.
When I reset my ATT modem, I get a new external IP address, and whoever knew the old one has to guess who I am now.  If my DynDNS account regualrly updates, then that "fixed external" (chosen by me to be for example edward.scissor.dyndns.com) will be the same but associated with new IPS address.
If your family has DSL, reset the modem and the IP address will change.

  • Ia there a good alternative to Microsoft windows server for enterprise?

Hi Guys, I work at a small (22 FTE's) public(not-for-profit) art galley. We are currently a mixed pc/mac office with various departments, all with different needs. Communications/Design are Mac. 2/3rds of the Curatorial is Mac, 1/3rd PC. Public Programs is mostly Mac with one PC. The accounting, giftshop, and Databases are all PC. The giftshop and accounting use ACCPAC. The collections (artwork collection that is) department uses FileMaker Pro backend, with a frontend called "Virtual Collections". We very much dislike Virtual Collections BTW. Our other database, which handles membership, and financial donation tracking, is @EASE. Because we are not-for-profit our overall budget for IT is relatively small, and the system is the way it is because of years of neglect, and stop-gap purchases. We use a Microsoft Server with Exchange. We are in the process of building a new gallery, and with it the ability to start fresh on a number of levels. One of which is our Server. Personally I'd like to see us move away from the Microsoft server ecosystem. It is cumbersome, requiring lots of IT support (which we contract out by the way, and costs us a tidy little sum yearly on top of MS Server licensing etc.) Our Management team is considering going to an all PC environment with the (I feel mistaken) attitude that "if all computers are the same flavour, the whole system will run more smoothly and thus be less expensive to manage". As on of the Mac users within this system, who knows a little about, but is no expert in, computers and networks in general, I'd like to be able to open a dialogue with management at this crucial juncture on alternatives to the system we now use.  I had run across a website some time ago that outlined the "real cost of owning and operating Microsoft Servers" but can not seem to locate it anymore. It basically broke down all costs of running a Microsoft environment, and concluded that, over time, it is not very cost efficient, especially for small enterprise. Has anybody run across any really good server alternatives to Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft Windows Server (I think ours is 2008)? We are a relatively small city, and the IT/Networking companies here all seem to push Microsoft as a be-all-end-all. I'm not so sure. I'd like to present viable alternatives with sound arguments to back them up. Can you guys help? Or, an you point me toward someone who can? Thanks guys, keep up the good work, Tmamer

Have you ever got this resolved?
I noticed your VIP and Public IP are not on the same subnet, i thought they had to be?
like both 10.x.x.x and subnet 255.0.0.0 or something like that?
    Could this be your problem?
I am trying to setup a two node cluster Oracle Rac 10g on IBM Blade Center H with HS21 XM blades.
My problem is trying to setup HA and not have a single point of failure and in order to do this, it almost seems as if i need 4 network interfaces in the HS21 blade so i can team 2 together.
Did you guys purchase any addition expansion cards for these servers for that reason?
My understanding is that each HS21 have by default 2 nics, and they each go to one of the two internal cisco switches (within the entire bladecenter).
So if for instance we have one of the cisco switch die, like the one that has the public interface plugged into it, then we could not longer access the rac and that would be a single point of failure. So unless we can have 4 interfaces on the blade, and have them 2 teamed with each nic going to one of the cisco internal switches. So if any one cisco switch die's it just uses the other one.
    Any thoughts, suggestions?

  • Advantages/Disadvantages of single/Multi 10g DB&AS Server for 2 application

    Hi Friends,
I am using Application1 using Oracle 10g Application Server and Oracle 10g database.
Now i planned to use Application2 using Oracle 10g AS and Oracle 10g DB
I need to know what will be the Advantages and Disadvantages if i have the schema for Application2 in the existing Oracle 10g DB / having it in another Oracle 10g DB Server
sameway what will be the advantages and disadvantages if i have the Application2 regsiterd in existing Oracle 10g AS(Multiple OC4J Instance) / having it in another Oracle 10g AS Server.
    Regards,

    Hi,
Personally i would'nt suggest using the Application server, due to
    1. If you need down time for application patching, you custom application will also be down.
    2. If you can not start 10g Application server (The one came with R12) for some issues, it will also affect your custom application.
    3. If you are upgrading/patching 10g application server (the one came with R12), you would not know what will the affect of this on custom application.
