Is there a way to create a custom display resolution on the Macbook Pro?

I have been able to do this with switchresx but can't really afford to spend the money to buy the full version. Can I create a custom resolution somehow? Be it through terminal or something else?

I'm trying to use my external display as my primary (and only display). I would be operating in clamshell mode, but this can lead to overheating issues. Is there an easy way to leave the Macbook open but turn its screen off manually when another display is connected?

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

My business has 3 TVs displayed in our lobby, each with its own apple TV and they are all linked to the same photo stream. Currently the Atv screensaver displays the photostream pictures of our products for the default 3 seconds. We just added pics/slides that now display messages and useful info for our customers but I want that info to be displayed for a longer period of time than the pictures to give people a chance to read it.
I tried using flickr and powerpoint as a work around but no luck. I created a slide in powerpoint with play length of 15 secs and saved it as a wmv file. I added that file to a "screensaver" set in flickr and pointed the Atv screensaver to that flickr set. It still displays everything, pics and the wmv file at the default 3 sec.
I know I can increase the duration of all pics in the screensaver to display for longer but the goal is to have the pics display at 3 secs and the info slides to display at 15 secs.

There are multiple ways to do similar things. One, built into the system, is to use text replacement. See:

There are other programs you can buy that can do the job in different ways, such as TextExpander. You could also just create a clipping file by dragging your e-mail address to somewhere like the desktop, and then you can simply drag that file to wherever you like to insert your e-mail address there.

You can remove the assembly tree by doing a roundtrip in 3D Toolkit, here's how:
- start Acrobat 3D
- drag & drop a CAD file
- click on 3D Annot to activate
- right-click on 3D
- select 'Edit in 3D Toolkit'
- 3D Toolkit launches
- click in 'Scene Tree' panel
- right-click on top assembly name
- select 'Tools->Collapse Hierarchy'
- select 'File->Save'
- select 'File->Exit'

I have an E-Bay Cheap mouse (Speedlink) and a PCWorld cheap keyboard (Advent) both connected at the same time.
These both connected at the same time when first installed - but on subsequent connections one is required to be deleted and re-added.
Have you tried connecting one, deleting the other and then re-pairing?

I have a document where I almost do such, but without the fill. I use a Head Style which Spans Columns for this instance; it allows the haeds to flow and fill the width.
Paragraph Rules above and below are turned on with plenty of offset.
I tweaked my setting to accomodate your need - It required only one instance, not above and below, and changing the stroke to a double stroke.
It may be necessary to create a custom stroke to modify the proportion of stroke vs fill. There is a difference of thin-thin and thick-thick, neither of which seemed perfect but might be dependent on the Character height.
Creating custom strokes is accomplished via the Strokes Panel.

Is there a way to create a table of contents listing the order of tabs(sheets) in a Numbers document?

I am planning my wedding and I have this huge Numbers document with 20+ tabs and I have plans to add many more tabs. Is there a way to create a table that has two columns: column 1= order that a tab appears, column 2=tab name? For example, my first three tabs are called Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List (in this order. I'd want this table of contents to be in the first sheet of the document, so it would be like sheet 1. Then I 'd want like the cells of column 1 to be like 2, 3, 4 (2nd, 3rd, 4th sheet in the document), and then the cells of column 2 to say Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List. I can make a tiny table of one cell in each sheet that I copied the name of the sheet and then do like a cell reference for column 2, but I'm having trouble w column 1.

There is no referential value for the order of the sheets, just the sheet name. Only two things I can think of to suggest:
Do the same thing for the first column that you do with the second (i.e. put a referential column in the same table as the Name and point to that).
Seriously consider using a word processor program. Numbers is probably the wrong tool.

Is there a way of improving my graphics on my early 2011 macbook pro 13"?

Does anyone know a way of improving the graphics capability for OpenGL with the Intel 3000 chips in the early 2011 MBP 13"? I bought it not realising the graphics chips had been downgraded and now as a result struggle to do any CGI work that I rely on my computer to do.

Still wondering why Apple went backwards for graphics in the 13", I completely missed the change.
I'm peeved at Apple for the fact that they didn't make a clear distinction of the disadvantages of the 13" with no dedicated graphics card then lumped it in with the 15" and 17" which do.
To Apple it's a matter of performance for price, the 13" scores 11 on Cinebench, the 15/17" score 30 and 45, so the 13" doesn't even come close. But it comes in the same silver case, the same "MacBook Pro" name, when in fact it's not so.
Apple knows people would be attracted to the performance of the MacBook Pro name in a small size factor, the price is also attractive to the younger crowd, the younger crowd are also interested in running 3D games, which need a more powerful video card.
Your not the first who's complained and feels burned, you trusted Apple was selling you a powerful MacBook Pro machine and you've got a consumer machine instead.
The 13" Mac laptop should have gotten it's own category, called it a MacBook instead and it should have come with white or black case. But that would have angered Intel most likely, who are trying to push integrated graphics on their CPU's so they own the whole show eventually.
It's going to take a long time before CPU integrated graphics is ever going to beat dedicated GPU graphics, because 3D game detail is always going to go up until it finally reaches 3D raytracing at 200 fps.
What Apple is doing is trying to get folks hooked on lessor quality/detail games, the ones you see on iPads and iPhones, and away from wanting rich detail which needs a powerful dedicated video card.
So Apple lumps the 13" MacBook in with the MacBook Pro line, try to force the issue, next they will try it with the 15", integrated graphics on the low end model. Then again only dedicated graphics on the 17" model and so forth. Eventually developers won't make as many 3D games for Mac's because most people buy laptops, cuts into their potential sales.
If you really want to run 3D games, you have to go with a Windows 7 desktop where the video card can be swtiched out.

Can u create a simple overlay (such as a square box) within FCP and have it work as an overlay, with alpha channel. Can't seem to figure it out.
I've done it by making the object and then keying out the black, but is there a way to just make it and have it work right off the bat?

Interesting question. I had to go try it and, you're right, the shapes come in on an opaque field and I have always assumed they were on transparent. Seems they were in earlier versions, can't remember. I do most of that kind of work in Motion.
You can use the luma keyer or you can shift one or more of the color channels to the alpha.
You can use the Screen composite mode which makes black transparent but there are issues with modes if you start stacking layers.

Is there any way to create a custom timecode in Premiere Pro?

I mean going beyond the standard controls in the Timecode effect.
I have a video project where I need to actually show time elapsed to demonstrate a process happening in a timelapsed video. In other words, this isn't just for editing/syncing purposes; the final video needs to display how long the events in the video are taking to complete, like a chronometer, and I want more control over its appearance.
For example, I want to strip out the Hours and Frames so all I have left is MM:SS in the display, which I've fudged for the moment by putting the timecode in a seperate sequence and cropping it. I'd also like to be able to choose the color, font, etc. of the digits display and to put something behind it other than the built-in semi-transparent gray background.
I almost need to be able to insert the timecode into a Title as a special character, like you'd do for page numbers in a text document.
If this simply isn't available in Premiere Pro but there happens to be a solution in, say, AfterEffects, or any other CC software, I would be fine with that.

Simple to to in After Effects, you can control a text layer with expressions scripting to get it to do whatever you want.
