Is there a way to flush my hard drive of all info but keep the OS?

Hey Apple Forums, I'm new here so pardon any mistakes that I may make along the way.
So I've got a very old iMac PowerPC G4 that I've been wanting to get rid of for a while. It's got 384 MB of RAM and a 700Mhz Processor, along with what I believe is a 50Gb Hard Drive (I haven't found a way to check for sure). It's running Mac OS X 10.2.8. So here's my question. Is there a way to totally flush the hard drive (or reformat it) to get rid of any sensitive data, but then be able to install or keep the OS files and get it running again? I'm not sure if it even came with an installation disk, but by now it's long gone. Feel free to ask me any questions if you need to know more or give me any tips or advise.
Thanks,
Lopesian

All Macs are supposed to come with installation discs from Apple, until July 20, 2011.  Sadly finding the original discs for that Mac is going to prove a bit of a chore.  You can do much of what you want by simply creating a new user account through Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts, and deleting the old account.  I do highly recommend backing up your old data elsewhere.   See my backup FAQ*:

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

Shot videos ONLY in landscape. For photos choose what's you like. Maybe you have to rotate photos on PC. What's your operating system?

  • Hard drive passes all tests but extremely high response times causing major performance issues.

I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ62-360TX pre-loaded with Windows 7 home premium (64-bit) that I purchased just under a year ago.
Recently my experience has been interrupted by stuttering that ranges from annoying in general use to a major headache when playing music or videos from the hard drive.
The problem appears to be being caused by extremely hard drive high response times (up to 10 seconds).  As far as I know I didn't install anything that might have caused the problems before this happened, and I can't find anything of note looking back through event viewer.
In response to this I've run multiple hard drive scans for problems (chkdsk, scandsk, test through BIOS, test through HP software and others) all of which have passed with no problems. The only thing of any note is a caution on crystaldiskinfo due to the reallocated sector count but as none of the other tests have reported bad sectors I'm unsure as to whether this is causing the problem. I've also updated drivers for my Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller from the Intel website and my BIOS from HP as well as various other drivers (sound, video etc), as far as I can tell there are none available for my hard drive directly. I've also wanted to mess with the hard drive settings in the BIOS but it appears those options are not available to me even in the latest version.
    System Specs:
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU P6100 @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
    Memory: 2048MB RAM
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series
Sound Card: ASUS Xonar U3 Audio Device or Realtek High Definition Audio (both have problem)
    Hard Drive: Toshiba MK5065GSK
    Any ideas?
Edit: The drive is nowhere near full, it's not badly fragmented and as far as I can tell there's no virus or malware.

Sounds like failing sectors are being replaced with good spares sucessfully so far, this is done on the fly and will not show in any test, you have a failing drive, I would back up your data and replace the hard drive.
Sector replacement on the fly explains the poor performance also, replacing sectors with spares is normal if it is just a few over many years, but crystal is warning you there are too many, a sign of drive failure is around the corner.

  • Is there any way to remove my hard drive with backup files in it from the exclude these items from backups???

I currently have a MacBook Air and a 1TB external hard drive, and I run my iPhoto Library from the EHD and as well have TM backup my computer to that same HD. The problem I have is that I don't have a backup of that HD which has all my photos and other media, so If the HD takes a crap I can be in big trouble.
So what I did is I purchased a new HD (My Cloud from WD) to back up my EHD. While setting everything up I ran into this
TM included the EHD in the "Exclude these items from backup" list and I can't touch them, and I tried everything. I later found this
The last sentence of #3 states why I can't.... Since the EHD has a backup file in it, it is excluded.
So..... Does anybody have any idea of a way around this? Would I have to restart everything and set it up different? Or just have a better and easier way of doing this?? I'll appreciate any help and suggestions.

What you need, is a dedicated image restauration filter that recognized the regular frequency pattern superimposed onto the prints. You can do this in advanced Image processing packages that let you compute the fourier transform of the image and then suppress or attanuate the frequency bands of the artefact with a band-stop filter.
But neither Aperture nor PhotoShop have this kind of filter. In Aperture and Photoshop you can only soften the effect by blurring and then exporting a smaller version of the image.
The algorithm that your scanner uses is probably the best that can be done, even if the resolution is only 100 dpi.
Do you still have the negatives? Scanning the negatives at a high resolution may give you better results.

  • Is there a way to get full hard drive encryption for the iPad?

This is a requirement before I start a new job and Is urgent as I really don't want to have to purchase a laptop instead of using my iPad.

iPad doesn't have a hard drive it uses flash memory. iOS devices already support hardware encryption of data:

And read Page 7 onwards of: http://images.apple.com/ipad/business/docs/iOS_Security_May12.pdf

  • Is there a way to replace a Power Point slide in Captivate and keep the CC notes?

    Hello,
I have a lot of Power Point slides in my Captivate project. The Power Point presentation is on a Share Point, so it is impractical to "link" the Captivate project with the Power Point presentation.  Now and then we need to make changes to the Power Point slides and then replace the old slide in Captivate with the new slide.  We have a lot of CC notes and TTS attached to each slide, so I lose all of that when I replace the slide.  Is there a way to keep the synchronized CC and TTS notes in place, and just replace the acutal slide?
    Thank you!
    Ryan

    1 - simplest way:
drag the sound file on to the audio well in the Inspector > document > document tab
music can only start on the first slide and will play untill the music ends, you can only have one music file in the presentation
    2 - more control
drag the sound file on to any slide, add the  images on to the same slide and use Builds to reveal each image in turn

  • Is there a way to mass/multi delete photos in all messages without deleteing the message

i have iOS 7, iPhone 4s and Mavericks.
i know i can tap and hold on the photo and the "more" option appears, then flip through the conversation and select individual messages to delete within that conversaion. but i have so many ongoing texts that i dont want to delete, and most have many photos within the message that go months back that i dont need. i dont want to delete the entire conversation but i dont need the photos embedded in the message. im tired of deleting  photos from the message as soon as i read or sent a photo text. is there an option in the phone or an app that will mass delete embedded photos within all texts. either iphone or mac app would work... or a script... anything! i would even be happy with selecting all phones to delete across all messages the way the camera roll allows you to delete. its seems like an obvious option.
    thanks

Open the Settings app > Notifications > Messages. Scroll down adn turn OFF "View In Lock Screen". You may want to consider setting Alert style to none, but this will not impact what happens when the screen is locked.

  • Currently my daughter and I use 1 apple id. Is there a way to set her up on a new id but with the same itunes library

Hi. My daughter and I share 1 apple id (username and password). How do I set her up with her own apple id and password on her mac but she keeps all the songs from the itunes library?

Make copy of the current library, and copy it to her new Mac.  Once it is there, she can delete whatever she doesn't want (i.e. your stuff).
Start the new account, and she can use it to buy stuff going forward.

  • Is there a way to creat a hard break in a song, followed by a measure or so of silence, then bring the music back in within the garageband format?

Is there a way to creat a hard break in a song, followed by a measure or so of silence, then bring the music back in within the garageband format?

I am not quite sure what you want to achieve, but you can
    select all tracks at once,
move the cursor to the measure where you want to cut your song
Press cmd-T to cut all tracks at the same position
select all regions in all tracks to the right of the cut and drag them one measure to the right
Alternately you might show the Master  Track (Main menu; Track -> Show Master Track) and use the Master Volume automation curve to silence all tracks at once for exactly one measure.

  • Is there a way to flush an XMLSocket?

Flash Media Server 2 provides an XMLSocket class. The
XMLSocket.send() method does not immediately send the data passed
to it. Is there any way to flush an XMLSocket and force it to send
    the data that it has?
I have an application that needs to send very small XML
objects to another process. The XML objects need to be sent right
away. The XMLSocket in the Flash Media Server 2 seems to buffer the
data. I have tried both the XMLSocket and the XMLStream classes.
Neither sends the data right away.
    Any suggestions?

Also the G1.NomadISP likes to boot weaker connections quite frequently, and often ignore the first internet reuqest.

  • I was trying to back up my mac by using my external hard drive.  Without realizing it, time machine erased all my backups from my other computers.  Is there any way to recover these files?  I can't even get the external hard  drive to work on my pc.

I was trying to use my external hard drive to back up my mac computer.  It had files on it from my pc computer.  Time machine erased all my existing files. (I thought it was only going to erase the duplicate files and rewrite them).  Is there anyway to recover these files from my external hard drive.  My mac has renamed the hard drive time maching and it will no longer show up on my pc.  What can I do?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Is there a way to export a searchable list of artists/albums/songs (not the music files, just the text) to my iPhone 4?

Basically, I have an iPod Classic which contains over 17,000 songs. I have a 16 GB iPhone 4. I don't always have the iPod with me, but just about always have the iPhone. Since I am still old school enough to actually buy CDs, I'd like a handily available and searchable list that I can export from iTunes to my iPhone so I can make sure I don't accidentally duplicate a purchase (it happens). I've tried searching the App Store but either I am doing it wrong, or nothing exists as yet. Obviously the phone can't carry all of that music so I am not looking to transfer those files en masse. Just want the lists so I can reference them as needed. Is this a pipe dream or is there actually a way to do this?  Thanks in advance...

    I just saw your post
Im using Adobe Elements 11 and my movie is a prel file. When I move it an
external hard drive I want to maintain the order of of my movie in its
    original time line if possible
The prel file is a project file which will eventually be exported to a file which will be your movie.
If all this involves just changing the location where you save your project files routinely, that is one thing.
But, once you move the source media that go into a project which has been saved closed, then you get
into serious media - project reconnect issues.
When you import media into a project, all you get are copies of the originals that are at a hard drive save location.
But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when first
    imported into the project.
Moving the project file should not get you into trouble; whereas moving, deleting, renaming source media that went into the project will.
If the project is finished, I can see using the Project Archiver to save it in a Copied Folder (saved to the external hard drive).
But, to work from the Copied Folder on a routine basis needs some thinking about. I would think about pointing your project and
it components to locations of your choice (even the external hard drive) for the "next" project but without involving the Project Archiver until you have finished
with the project and want it safely out of the way.

  • Is there a way to link or create a widget that links back to the iTunes U app on your iPad from your iBook?

Is there a way to link or create a widget that links back to the iTunes U app on your iPad from your iBook?
I have already found the Apple Widget Builder (http://widgets.itunes.apple.com/builder/) and that works fine if you want to link to the "App Store", but I want to know if there is a way to "open an app" that is already installed on the iPad instead of double tapping the home button to switch between apps. (I know using the home button is very simple, but I am trying to find an even easier way to just "tap a widget" or "link" that will open iTunes U right up) I am only asking if this is possible for people who may have a hard time running an iPad at the beginning.
    I appreciate any help, thanks!

I appreciate your help, but I had already looked at LinkMaker and I thought that was my answer, but as far as I could tell that still only links to an app in the app store. Yes it will link to iTunes U in the app store and you can then hit Open, but that is too drawn out of a process. We would like to know a way to just open the app directly.
    Thank you!

  • Is there a way to change the actual song file but keep the 'info'?

I have a compilation that took me a really long time to edit (by which I mean put the date for each individual song in because they were all released different years becaues it's a Bob Dylan compilation and I have smart playlists for each decade from the 50's upwards) and I want to change the actual file in itunes but keep the data, is there any way? It'd take ages to do again because it's a 3-cd album. I'm trying to change the file because the one I have is approx 200kbps bit rate and i want to have a different, 320kbps version that i've downloaded. I've tried opening the file in explorer and deleting it so that i can 'locate' the file again to the one i want to replace it with, but it changes the song title, album artist, and tags etc to the new file, whereas i thought it would just retain the information but change the actual file it played.
i've had a really hard time explaining this i'm sorry if it's unclear. i was just wondering if there was any way to avoid the painstaking process of googling each song to find its release date and manually entering it when i already have a perfectly organised album.
i can't find anything anywhere about this, presumably because i've no idea what the key words for the search would be, so i'm sorry if this is common knowledge.
    thanks in advance

VBR vs. CBR isn't a concern as far as the strategy is concerned. As given it is slightly easier if the replacement files have exactly the same files names and folders as the files they are replacing (case doesn't matter) but if that isn't possible we can work around that too.
Not my area but I think CBR gives larger files and less processing overhead for the same quality, which is a somewhat nebulous term. I'm not sure there is any real benefit.
Yes a script is just another kind of a program.
iTunes gives each track in the database a unique ID and knows the path that the file is supposed to live on. If you replace the original file with a different file of higher bitrate that has the same filename then iTunes will use that new file next time it wants to play the track. When it does so it will also read the tag and update itself if any of the information is different.
The original function of the ExportImport script was to help someone else rescue play counts from an old library database. If works by scanning through selected tracks and writing out a text file that contains an ID for each track and the data that wants to be copied back later.
Here is a sample output from the export:
    <#>iTunes Metadata - Exported 19/12/2012 20:03:58
    <ID>E5C69360-306A28AF
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\1 Thunderstruck
    <Plays>12
    <ID>7C1D487C-3414298C
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\2 Shoot To Thrill
    <Plays>12
    <ID>0DCF32CE-1079174E
    <#>AC-DC\AC-DC Live\3 Back In Black
    <Plays>15
Each block consists of the iTunes track ID, a comment so we humans can see which track this is, followed by one or more properties. I can write you a custom version of this script but I need to know exactly which properties you need to save and then restore. For example Name, Year, Genre, etc. You need to compare a new and old version of one of your songs and work out which fields need resetting in the new song to make it match the old one.
Having saved a file with the information that would otherwise change, you can then delete the older copies of the file, or better yet move them to a backup location, then copy in the new versions. If the filenames match iTunes will "see" the new files automatically, otherwise my FindTracks script can normally fix the broken links. Once iTunes is connected to all of the new files you drag and drop the saved text file onto the ExportImport script to run the import phase. This applies the saved data to each track in turn.
