Is there a way to 'lock' all settings, preferences etc. ?

I am one of probably millions of people who take care of and maintain a computer for their aging parents. My problem is that Mom and Dad have a terrible time keeping from making unwanted changes to their system. I am referring to details such as window positions, toolbar selections and countless other settings in their browser, email client etc. They will accidentally change something and have no idea how they did it or how to change it back, or even recollection of exactly how things used to be.
Can anyone here advise me of a utility or application that can be used to effectively 'lock' everything so that they cannot possibly mess things up. I would hope it could cover the entire OS, not just specific apps such as 'Mail'. I also need this to work for OS X 10.3.9.
Even if things cannot be locked, is there some way that the computer could at least boot up in the exact same configuration every time it is booted? Is there some way to create and utilize a disk based 'sleep mode' file for this? I'm referring to a disk file that gets written before the Mac goes into a deep sleep mode before a forced sleep due to low battery power.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, not just by me and other 'children/caretakers' but I would bet by millions of geriatrics around the world! TIA

I have been doing some searching and experimenting and have just come up with two solutions.
One is to use the app called "Deep Freeze" for the Mac. It works back to Panther at least and that is what I need. It sees to it that upon re boot everything will be the same as it was when it was frozen. You can even have a special folder that you can put stuff in (new downloads or other documents you have created) and they will be readable and writable as normal.
The problem with the above app is that I could not find any way for it to keep new emails. It would re-Get them with every restart of the computer.
So I found an even simpler way that works very well for my situation. I use Get Info and check the "Lock" box for the following files in HomeFolder/Library/Preferences/
com.apple.desktop.plist
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.dock.plist
com.apple.mail.plist
com.apple.Safari.plist
com.apple.universalaccess.plist
Doing this makes it so that even if mom and dad screw with any prefs or window positions of Mail and Safari, or if they inadvertently drag and 'poof' icons out of the dock (they do this routinely with their shaky hands and mouse button trigger finger). At the next start of the application everything is back to the default (default by my design) position. And upon restarting the computer the dock has all its icon back in place. It is very simple and straight forward to do and it is obviously free. Just make yourself a folder with an alias of every plist file that you 'lock' and you can very easily find them and unlock them if you need to make a change.
If you want any particular folder to open when the computer is booted or if you want any particualr apps to be open at boot time just put them in System Prefs/Accounts/Login Items.
All the above works in 10.4.10. I hope it will work in 10.3.9.
The only thing I have not yet discovered how to do is how to make a folder window be in a specific place and have a specific size when it opens at boot time. It needs to be this way regardless of how it might have been left at Shut Down time. Any help on what needs to be locked etc. to accomplish that would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Are you saying you were trying to backup your phone but instead it restored your phone from a backup that was two years ago
If so there is no way to recover the recent data that was lost because it wasn't back up.
did you at the very least import your pics to your computer as you would a digital camera?

  • Is there a way to adjust the settings on launchpad so that when I swipe into it all the open apps/pages are fully separated (like in exposé) so that I can fully view all of them simultaneously?

    Hi Apple community,
This is my first go at this so be kind,
My question concerns launchpad. Coming from Snow Leopard I had been using spaces. I like to keep certain bundles of programs on separate desktops, for example all word processing related tasks in one place. I have set up the equivalent on Yosemite.
My problem is concerns the loss of exposé. Now I know when you swipe into launch pad you get a very similar effect but the issue I am having concerns the "zoom out" effect when you swipe into launchpad. With exposé all open apps/pages etc would be fully exposed - in my case several (sometimes as many as 9 word documents). What I am running into is when I do this in / into launch pad the "pile" of docs is exposed but they are still overlapping so I can't get a good look at which is which and visually identify where I want to navigate to.
My question is this; Is there a way to adjust the settings on launchpad so that when I swipe into it all the open apps/pages are fully separated (like in exposé) so that I can fully view all of them simultaneously? If so, instructions on how to do so would be greatly appreciated. Any alternative suggestions to doing this outside of launchpad are also welcome. If there is an exposé app for example, I would be quite willing to go that route.
My main concern is being able to quickly (ie a touchpad gesture) expand all the open pages so I can bounce between them.
Much thanks from a loyal Apple friend.

    Hey Eric,
Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.
Again, thanks for trying, it is appreciated.

  • Is there any way to keep all firefox files and settings in a specified place?

I recently put a version of firefox on a flash drive for when using public computers so I can always have the custom settings and addons available. But the inherent problem is that firefox puts files in the documents and settings folder on the computer, and sometimes the computer will not allow any files to be put in the directory and firefox will not run there. Is there any way to confine all the files in the same place short of putting the whole operating system on there?

You can use the portable Firefox version that comes with its own profile on the flash drive.

Open Media Encoder and add your Sequences:
File > Add Premiere Pro Sequence
Navigate to your Premiere Project and select it in the list.
You can then select multiple Sequences from the Project (Ctrl+Click)
and load them all at once into Media Encoder and apply

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

is there a way of wiping ALL Safari data, i.e. restoring Safari ? I think my Safari has a virus..as every time I open it, a web page called 'search quick' comes up. Its bombarded my Safari with constant pop up adverts almost every time I click!

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Is there a way to lock down IOS devices to a specific version of IOS?

We got bit pretty hard by the IOS 6.1/exchange 2010 thing but would like to keep Idevices around.
Trying to find options to protect againts IOS updates until the IT staff can test the new version throughly.
Is there a way to lock a device down to a specific IOS version where the user will not get update messages?
I have been checking out MDM companies and all they can do is label a non approved ios version device 'non-compliant' and kick it off the network if its not the correct IOS version.
I can straight block the new OS version from the server, but in the user base someone would accidentially update and then they are locked out.
Is anyone else dealing with the same issues?

You can restrict safari, which won't turn off Internet access, but will prevent browsing through safari.  Note: without additional restrictions, other browsers could be installed from the app store if users have the apple ID password.
On the ipad itself, go to settings\general\restrictions and set safari to off.
You may also want to restrict 'installing apps' here to prevent the user from installing additional browsers.
These can also be configured via MDM if you need to do this on a lot of devices.

  • I lost my iPod touch and now have a new one.  Is there a way to transfer all the songs on have in iTunes onto the new iPod?

I lost my iPod touch and bought a new one?  Is there a way to transfer all the songs I have in iTunes onto the new iPod?  I am scared I will lose it all when I sync the new one or that I have to start all over.   Please help!!

You can do better than that. You can click on the Restore button that appears under your device in iTunes. This will restore your iPod to factory settings as if it were fresh out of the box. But don't worry. By doing a restore, you will then be given the option to "Restore from Backup." This will allow you to restore the state of your previous iPod!!

  • Is there a way of swapping all data over from one ipad to another ipad and vice verse?

Another family member and I both have iPad 3, they have with 3g and mine just wifi. We are discussing swapping so I can have the 3g feature as its more useful for me. Is there a way of swapping all their data to my ipad and my data to their ipad so it is a straight swap?

What you want to do would be no different that restoring your current content to a brand new iPad. You should both do as described below and then erase your respective devices and make the swap.
First ... and you both want to do this.... Transfer purchases from your iPad into iTunes on your computer, backup the iPad and then sync with iTunes.
These two articles will explain how to do that.
    Transfer purchases.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
How to backup and restore from a backup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
You may want to import photos from the device to your computer as well so that you can sync them back at a later time. Your camera roll photos are stored in the backup, but it never hurts to be proactive.
    Read about importing photos here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
After you have transferred purchases, backed up and transferred photos, you can erase your iPad before you swap devices. Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings. That will completely wipe your devices.
Now you can swap and you will both be starting from scratch like you did when the iPad was new.
When you re-activate the new iPad, the one you are getting from your family member - toward the end of the activation process you will be given the opportunity to restore from an iCloud or iTunes backup. You want to select the iTunes option. So you will have to connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes.
Restoring from the backup will recover all of you app data and settings, syncing with iTunes will recover all of your apps, books, photos, music and other media

  • Is there a way to find all highlights made in the macbook ibooks library in the case that you cant remember the book in which the highlight was made?

Is there a way to find all highlights made in the MacBook iBooks library in the case that you cant remember the book in which the highlight was made?

    Some things that might help:
    1. Only the most recently used apps actually occupy memory (used to be the most recent 4, but may have changed in the latest iPhones). After 4 (or so), IOS writes them out of active memory, as it does for even the latest 4 if there's no activity for a long time. So the business of closing all the open apps, apart from the most recent ones doesn't make a difference. Tis article has a good explanation:
    http://www.speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html
    2. There are settings about background app activity that might help:
    - Settings, General, Background App Refresh controls which apps can update their data in the background
    - Settings, Notifications controls which apps can tell you things, which they have to wake up to do.
    - Settings, Privacy, Location Services controls which apps monitor your location - another activity that uses resources
    Hope some of that helps
