Is there a way to make internet connections work faster?

My wife has a Macbook and I have the MB Air and we are both running off Time Capsule. Many times when we are both using the internet it becomes a crawl, especially if TC is backing up or we are trying to use Mail or trying to view something on a web site.
I have seen some software out there that claims to speed things up and makes the connection work more efficiently. Does anyone have experience with this? The one recommended to me was IPNetrouterX which has good reviews but is very expensive.
Thanks
Richard

It's a bandwidth issue - the size of the pipe, which you cannot work around. if your network is 100 Mb/s and you have three equal users, each gets about 33 Mb/s. You can't get more out of a network than you put in. The only solution is more bandwidth, a larger pipe. A 1 Gb/s network will be faster if yours is 100 Mb/s.
You can use a 1 Gb network if all your devices support that speed. Of course that will be your LAN or WAN speed. The speed to the internet is dependent on the bandwidth your ISP is providing you.
Don't confuse internet speed with local network speed. Your "internet" speed is constant, it's the sharing that is slowing the LAN.

  • Is there a way to make the connection invisible to outsiders?

Hi I am a college student and I wanted to put a wireless network in my dorm room. My question is there a way to make the wifi connection be invisible to outsiders but to people who know that it is there they can see it(use it)? basically I want it to remain on so i dont have to unplug the power to it all the time. anything would be very helpful!!
    thanks for your time.

Okay, I see I should have read some of the other discussions before I posted. According to the discussions at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=887980 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=821637, the option to "Create a closed network" (disable the broadcast of the SSID, as some utilities call it) is misleading and only makes the network invisible to the casual observer. Ordinarily, I would still consider that worth something -- having a better lock on my door might not make me completely safe, but it might make the next door down the block look like a more inviting target for a thief. However, considering the flaky behavior that my Mac often doesn't automatically find the same closed network that it has found many times before, I'm turning off the "closed network" setting and relying on encryption. Duane, thanks for the heads up.

  • MFC - is there any way, to make the MFC work on Mac OS X

    Hello,
I'm new to programming on Mac OS X. And I just want to know, if there is a way to compile the MFC (M$ Foundation Classes) for OS X?
Or is there any other possibility to use them?
I searched in different Forums, asked Mr Google, but didn't find a good answer.
    Well, I didn't find a positive answer...
Maybe someone here, has any idea about it or a hint, that can help. A simple NO is not enough...
    THX tobschwe

Well, the last time I looked, the underlying MFC concepts aren't totally foreign to OS X. You could probably (with SUBSTANTIAL effort) write a package that presents the MFC API, but implements it in Cocoa. But that's what you'd have to do, because Cocoa has none of the underlying library functions used by MFC's Windows implementation, and the Cocoa implementations of the underlying concepts and the relationships between them vary in subtle ways from the Windows implementations.
Which is why wise men simply say "NO".

  • Is there a way to make Firewire iSight work with USB apps?

I am awaiting attival of my new iSight on Monday and I was beginning to wonder if there is some software or a trick you can use to get other chat programs to look at the firewire port instead of USB to enable the programs to see the iSight as a viable cam to use in those programs, or am I limited to using iChat when videoconferencing? I have the iChat for USB software that allows my Piece-Of-S#@% Kensington to work in iChat—making it recognize a USB cam as opposed to looking at the firewire port. Is there an equivalent out there that fools the other chat programs into looking at Firewire instead of USB?

OK, if I read you correctly, these programs such as Yahoo, etc. will look wherever they can to find the cam then? I wondered if they just looked to see if there was something plugged into a USB slot it could identify as a cam and if it didn't see anything there, I wasn't sure if it would look to the firewire port as well. I guess I'll know more when the cam gets here and I try it out, but from what you said they should work as well. 10:30 a.m. estimated arrival time. I'm pretty excited!

  • HT4641 Is there any way to make .rtf files work?

I didn't notice the lack of .rtf support when I bought it (urgh!), which would make this app perfect for my needs, as half my files are .rtf and I have to actively convert each file one at a time into doc or docx if I want to use them on my ipad 2, and then back again if I want to upload them to the group that prefers .rtf files. Pain-staking process, that. This simple change would be a great feature for an update.

What kind of parental controls are you talking about? You have full control over standard accounts on your Mac by using the Parental Controls system preference.
If you're concerned that a child will try to circumvent the controls by changing the admin password using the installation disk, then you can certainly set an EFI password. Follow these instructions.

  • Is there any way to make an iPad3 connect to the internet in an Extended Verizon area?

Is there any way to make an iPad3 connect to the internet in an Extended Verizon area?

If you have the prepaid 3G account, no. The prepaid service, the kind activated directly from the iPad only works on Verizon's own network. You'd need to change to the month-to-month postpaid service to roam on the extended network. Call customer service about changing it over. You will need to do a credit check but there is no contract.

  • My family shares one apple id. Is there any way to make an apple id for each member of my family and have it all connected to the same credit card and have the same previous downloads open to download by signing in to each members personal apple id?

My family shares one apple id. Is there any way to make an apple id for each member of my family and have it all connected to the same credit card and have the same previous downloads open to download by signing in to each members personal apple id?

    Hi cindy,
If you all have individual Apple IDs, then you would be able to dowload music from a shared iTunes library on a computer, but you would not be able to sign on each individual ID on an iOS device in order to download music purchased under the original Apple ID without a 90-day waiting period between sign-ons.
    Here's what I mean:
If you were to sign on a new Apple ID on, say, an iPhone, and then were to purchase and download some music from iTunes, then you would have to wait 90 days before you could sign on the old Apple ID to that iPhone in order to download previously purchased material (and vice versa).
However, if all of the music purchased by that origjnal Apple ID is in an iTunes library on a shared computer, then you can hook up the device and selectively sync any music in that library to the device. You can also sign on any of the Apple IDs to that shared iTunes library and purchase music to be added to the library.
You would need to authorize the computer for each of the new Apple IDs.
Each of the Apple IDs would also be able to download that music purchased either by syncing to the iTunes library on the computer or by downloading it OTA on the device.
So, each Apple ID can download music, movies, etc. purchased with that Apple ID OTA to the device. Also each Apple ID can sync any music, movies, etc. that are in the iTunes library on the computer regardless of who purchased them.
The only other thing you would need to remember is that if an App needed to be updated, then the original Apple ID that was used to purchase that App would come up, and the password that goes with that Apple ID would be required to do the update.
    Hope that helps,

  • The PC that my ipod was connected crashed and i wanted to switch it to my laptop now..the question is will i lose all my pictures and notes from my ipod if i switch PC's or is there a way to make it stay since i have icloud backup on my ipod.

hi...the pc that my ipod was connected crashed and i wanted to switch it to my laptop now..the question is will i lose all my pictures and songs from my ipod if i switch PC's or is there a way to make it stay since u have icloud backup on my ipod. i really dont want to lose my pictures so plz let me know if there is a way...thank you

The iCloud backup does not include non-Tunes purchased music and photos that were synced to the iPod. The iCloud backup does not also included a few other things included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.
The iPod backup that iTunes makes does also not included non-iTunes purchases and photos synced to the iPod.
free programs like iFunBox with copy non-iTunes purchased music and some other things from iPod to computer.  A paid program like TouchCopy is needed to copy photos synced to the iPod to a computer.

Is this to reduce the clutter of suggestions on the address bar, or for some other reason?
You can change the address bar drop-down so it only suggest bookmarked sites instead of everything in your history. This article describes how to make that change: [[Awesome Bar - Find your bookmarks, history and tabs when you type in the address bar]] (see the section "How can I control what results the location bar shows me?").
Am I on the right track?
(I'm avoiding the really hard question of how to selectively cull your history. I can't think of a way to do that.)

  • Is there a way to make sure my MBP doesn't use a particular resolution or ?

This may be a stupid question. I am hooking my MBP to my lcd tv. When I first connected the television, my tv displayed the message "mode not supported". Having played a little at this I simply went to my display preferences and looked at what resolution was running to my tv. (I have my display preferences in the toolbar) It was running 1920x1080 at 60Hz and right above that there was another 1920x1080 at 60Hz so I clicked on that and my external display lit right up. (Turns out the second resolution's refresh rate is actually 59.9Hz) So no problem right? Well I use this set up as sort of a media center so I like to run my MBP with its lid closed. When I close the lid, and rewake the MBP, my television gives me the message "mode not supported". So there is a signal but the tv can't display it. This leads me to believe that when I close the lid on my MBP it decides to run at the 60Hz as opposed to the functional 59.9Hz. The problem is I can't see the display to change the resolution or refresh rate. Is there a way to make sure my MBP doesn't use a particular resolution or refresh rate? I have tried changing it before I close the lid. I have tried it in mirrored display mode. Nothing works so far. Please Help!

Not really. In the Displays preferences you can only check the option to show supported resolutions, but that only will be present with another display connected (I believe.) On laptops it isn't an option, obviously, but it may be present once you connect an external display.
You might try using the shareware utility SwitchResX - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Is there a way to make the message+ app use wifi as default if wifi is available available?

I often am on WiFi with very little service and message+ tries to send it over service and if fails. I then have to turn on airplane mode and wifi to get it to send over the WiFi network. Is there a way to make this just happen automatically?

I can see that becoming pretty annoying, Garrett611. We do try extremely hard to make sure you get a reliable signal in as many places as possible. Since there are places where Wi-Fi is available but there's factors beyond our control that decrease cellular service, Wi-Fi is a great alternative! If you go into Verizon Messages > Menu > Settings > there is an option to Sync Over Wi-Fi only when connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Is there a way to make Apple TV move to the next video in a Vimeo playlist automatically?

Is there any way to make Apple TV play multiple Vimeo videos automatically, one after the next?
For any of you who have used a Google TV device, you know that this is the default behavior for internet videos (Vimeo included, obviously) there. It's the only thing that I miss after boxing that thing up to use my Apple TV full-time.
If there's not a way to do this, is there any hope of suggesting this behavior (and if so, who would I suggest that behavior to, Vimeo or Apple?)?
    Thanks in advance.

It's a bug that has presented itself again after the update. I would provide feedback and a bug report

  • Is there a way to make all addons not write anything locally, instead use ram memory?

Pretty much what it says right there.
Is there a way to make all addon's write only on RAM?
I'm pretty certain Private Browsing only works for vanilla Firefox, and many addons don't keep that in mind.
Is there a firefox setting I can manipulate to make everything RAM only? Something like limiting the amount of data addons can write on disk or something along those lines?

Session cookies are kept in memory AFAIK and never written to disk.
What makes you think that Firefox is saving them to disk?
You can look at the portable Firefox version if you want to minimize writes to the disk that stores your Firefox profile.

Is  there any way to use Internet Explorer on a Mac Book Pro? I have one company that I do business with that only uses Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is not available for Mac.
But you can make Safari pretend to be Internet Explorer in some cases.
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop, move mouse down to "User Agent".
Select Internet Explorer from popup on the rightside.
After using Internet Explorer, revert back to Safari, doing the same routine.

  • Is there a way to make Mailbox automatically update as soon as you get new mail?

I just got an iPhone 4, and I noticed that my mailbox only updates when I open it, even if I received new mail since I last checked. Is there a way to make it automatically update when I get new mail in my inbox? There's sort of no point to alerting me when I get new mail if I'm already in the inbox.
I dunno if it matters, but my mail box is synced to a gmail account.
I also don't really know what my operating system is, but I guess it's iOS 6 since it's a new phone? I don't know how to check.

It depends on how you have mail checking your mail. You mention that you have a Gmail account. Did you set this up as an Exchange account to use Push? If you have mail set to only check manually, then that is what will happen, it will only update manually. If you have it set to one of the other time settings, it will update like that, as that will be the only time it will connect to the mail server, even with the application open.
