Is there a way to physically eject a stuck cd?

I have a cd stuck in my mini and the reboot/use system software solution won't eject it. It does not appear on disk utility.
Is there a way to physically remove it without opening the case?

First off there are several ways to attempt the ejection of a stuck CD/DVD in a Mac. You stated that you have tried many, but for other potential readers I will list them again.
1. The eject button on the keyboard.
2. Alternate click (right click) on the cd/dvd on the desktop and select eject.
3. Drag the cd/dvd icon to the trash
4. Eject button in the sidebar net to the cd/dvd icon.
5. Use the eject option in iPhoto.
6. Reboot the Mac while holding down the mouse button or trackpad (on laptops), may not work with Bluetooth mice.
7. Power-off the Mac the back on and leave it for about 10-min or so.
8. open terminal app and then from the command line type the following:
drutil tray open <enter>
drutil tray eject <enter>
9. If none of these work, then try finding a small stiff object like a credit card or piece of poster board, then place a piece of double sided tap to the end and then try fishing the disk out.

  • Is there a way to physically open CD tray?

    Hi,
I just downloaded the latest OSX update, and consequently my emac now will not start at all. I get the startup tone, then a light grey screen with darker grey apple logo in the middle.
No beach ball, spinning wheel or mouse pointer. And I cant even open the CD tray using the eject button to attempt to startup from the OSX DVD.
Is there a way to physically insert the DVD to force it to startup from this?
    Would really appreciate anyone's help!

    It's possible, here's how:
    1. open up the thing (I don't know the English word, it's in front of the drive) with the apple logo, with your fingers/nails
    2. stick a paper clip or something like that inside the tiny hole on the left
    3. your tray should now open
    4. insert your dvd and close tray (I'm not sure if it's ok to push it back manually)
    5. reboot while pressing the C-key so it boots from your dvd
Don't use anything that can break and get stuck inside the hole.
    PS
I think your eMac manual has some instructions for it too.

  • Disc in drive that Mini will not recognize, will not eject. Is there any way to force eject?  The computer says it's empty, but it's not.

I have a disc in the super drive but cannot eject it because the Mini does not recognize that it's there. I've tried the eject button on top of the screen and in the dvd player controls. I wish there was an eject button on the machine. Is there any way to force eject?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that it is possible for a DAQ board to generate an AI Start Trigger from an analog trigger, but not be triggered itself until it receives a digital trigger.

  • Is there a way to auto eject the CD after burning it with I-tunes?

looking for a real auto-eject, not having to manually do a cntrl-e....
    thanks Jeff

A similar effect occurs with Mavericks 10.9.5, in that when you see the cursor as a double-arrow
whilst hovering over the window title-bar, it will expand the open window and not just drag it...
Be sure to not grab the window by the upper edge and it should just move. Not sure why these
features were adopted over the older proven ones that were for the most part trouble-free.
Also, a lack of double-arrows in the scroll area of all system & application windows is an issue
for those who use a standard mouse without a touch surface, such as an original USB mouse.
    {near Mile 27 Seward Hwy, Kenai Mts AK - 2008}
There may or may not be a way to change the window issue where attempts to move or drag it
only expand its presence; most of these new changes are built-in and not adjustable to users.
    Nonetheless...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.

  • Is there a way to create three different physical calendars in ical so that I can get a fiscal view of the calendars?

Is there a way to create three physically different calendars in iCal so that I can view the calendar and events from a fical point of view?

iCal just shows the calendars you have created in your account(s).  So if you are using iCloud just log into your iCloud account in a web browser and make as many new calendars as you wish to have.  Then enable those in iCal.
If you use Google accounts or something else for the calendars, then create them as needed, and enable them in iCal.
I have several separate calendars all displayed in iCal - a couple linked through my Gmail accounts, and one through my iCloud account.  Each uses a different default item color so they are distinct in iCal.

  • Is there a way to have external drives automatically eject on shutdown?

Hello. First post. I've owned this laptop for about eight months now. I just purchased a second external firewire drive, and today I forgot to eject either drive before shutting down. The Mac froze up, and I had to use Applejack (which I had luckily just installed) to bring it back. I'm worried I'll do this again, and with a videography business, this could result in a possible loss of data. I've googled and looked around here a bit...but as the post title says...is there a way to add this functionality to a Mac to avoid this in the future? Thanks.

    Hi Alex Matson-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
As mentioned, selecting "shutdown" should gracefully close the drives.
As an aside, I have a video business, and I find that 3 backups of all of my data has saved my rear more than once. One backup sits on my desktop, one is in a fireproof safe, and one is stored at a different location entirely.
Should something catastrophic happen, like a flood, you will still have all of your data available on the off-site drive.
You should also power your drives from the same UPS as your Mac.
    Luck-

Woke up this am and opened Finder to find no sign of HD icon or a data stick I'd inserted. Couldn't open or eject the data stick as a result. Is there a way around this? Can I reconfugure my Finder to show the HD Icon and also to display data stick or external drives?

"Shut Down" the machine (not Sleep), remove the data stick, then power on the machine.

Is there a way of knowing which external drive ejects?
I have several external drives and when one ejects on it's own it usually immediately restarts again and does not give me time to find which one was the problem drive.
Is there a way of figuring this out?

No unfortunately without restoring the library and running it there is no way to tell if it is good or not.

  • Is there a way to keep music & playlists on a server?

We've become a multi-computer household recently, but not enough for everyone to be on their own computer, so in my house you grab any free computer when you can. I want to be able to synch up my iPod with any computer that becomes free. I've learned how to move my library to an external drive, so my guess it's no big difference if that external drive is a served one. But is there a way to have the playlists and such served as well?
Extra credit question (not iTunes): should I even bother trying to run Xserve from my 233 MHz G3?

It sounds like you issue could be bigger than just iTunes.
You said that with a limited number of computers at home, you try and
"grab a free one." You've resorted to an external HD for you iTunes library
    and Photos, right?
I think I would try moving my ENTIRE user folder to the external HD - i.e. /Users/<name>. And attaching that HD evertime I wanted to use a computer.
*WARNING!! Geek Speak! Also, I've done the following with other Unix and/or Linux systems, but not yet with OS X. *
The way to do this is by creating the same user (a new account) on all computers, being careful to name the account exactly the same on each machine, AND making sure the UID/GID is the same on every machine for this new account (use Netinfo Manager to be sure.) You will need administrator access to to this, and PLEASE do this using a different local Administrator account than the account you are trying to create.
Once that is done, attach the External HD to the first computer. Using Terminal or X11, open a shell (command prompt window,) go to /Users and blow away the new user <name> folder with "rm -r <name>". Then create a symbolic link to the External HD's user folder using "ln -s /Volumes/External HD/Users/<name> <name>". This makes the "Users/<name>" file structure on the External HD look like it lives under the target computer's Users folder.
Since OS X is basically Unix, this should make all of your applications treat your data as if it existed physically on the target computer.
In normal use, make sure that the target computer is logged into a different account when attaching the external drive - AND BEFORE you login to your
"attached" account. Then logout of your new account before Ejecting the External HD.
This should give you access to everything in your User folder on ANY computer. Just a word of caution, all computers that you'd like to enable this on should have the same OS version, and application versions - else you could be trying to access a new format file with an older application - not ussually a problem with Macs.

  • Is there a way of transfering DJmixed music to an Ipod?

Hi - we want to use our ipod/ iphone for our wedding reception during breaks for the band. Itunes has the DJ mix function but I can't see how this could be transferred to a media device. Is this possible or is there software out there that will create the mix and allow me to transfer that to our apple devices? thanks

*can i just download itunes and plug in my ipod...or would that just delete my stuff??*
If your iPod is set to sync automatically on connection then your songs will be erased if you connect to an empty iTunes. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Once you are safely connected you can change the setting: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However if you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Is there any way to make my iPod THE iTunes Library?

Is there any way to make my iPod THE iTunes Library? I would like to free up all the space my iTunes Library takes up on my MacBook Pro, so I was considering purchasing an portable external hard drive to hold my iTunes Library…then it dawned on me… why shouldn’t I just be able to use my iPod for this? But not as simply a hard drive, but be able to access my songs on the iPod the same as I do now?

You can delete all the songs from your computer and just keep them on the iPod by changing the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". In manual mode you can connect and play the songs from your iPod through iTunes on your computer. You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem (and that's a very strong possibility). You should reconsider your original idea of investing in an external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Forum member Buegie has compiled a very extensive procedure for backing up your music which you'll find at this link: Backing up iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
