Is there a way to use the iCloud framework with keeping my data local?

Even before the coming to light of the NSA scandal and Apple's involvement in it, I wasn't really comfortable with uploading my data into the iCloud. After all, there's an american saying that "possession is 80% of ownership". Frankly, I don't want to give Apple de facto ownership of my data.
What I was hence hoping for was to buy a mac mini server edition and maybe change some preferences in order to switch my data storage and syncing location from North Carolina to my cupboard, maybe additionally providing that service to my entire family.
Some Aplle "genius" told me that wasn't possible, the iCloud-Servers being "hardwired" into the software.
Is that the case, or is there some way around this, maybe? I already am using Dropbox to sync photos with my devices and some family, but I really would like to have the option to change the server adress of my iCloud installation, as it would make stuff really a lot simpler and more integrated.
Thanks for any reply and advice.

In this case - Dear Apple MacOS X engineers. Pretty pleeeeeeeease incorporate such a feature in the next version of OSX (Server). That probably wouldn't go well with your buddies at Fort Meade, but might open a big chunk of the retail market for server products.

  • Is there a way to use the Maintenance Wizard with a .profile file...

    Good afternoon all...
In my environment we have the same applmgr account for multiple databases. The .profile delivers a menu that allows the user to pick which database they wish to work with, and then a script runs which changes the environment specific variables for the desired database.
In many environments I have worked in the .profile is used to setup environmental variables for the applmgr account.
In looking at the instructions for setting up Maintenance Wizard it says to ensure ssh or rsh access to each of the applications servers using the applmgr account, and removing any .profile or .login scripts. This is not viable in my environment.
In asking on metalink I was told 1) just ignore the ssh setup stuff; and 2)the ssh setup is essential for maintenance wizard to work. Clearly conflicting advice.
How can I install/implement maintenance wizard without the loss of my current .profile configuration?
    Please advise,
    Adam

Oracle support's assessment was that that there is no way around the requirement to use ssh/remsh, I did a bit of further research into the issue. I developed a resolution for hpux as follows...
I used ssh rather than remsh for my shell and created a conditional statement in my .profile to handle the issue...
    # Set environment script if not secure shell -- 100311 MAC
    if [ -n "$SSH_CLIENT" ]
    then
    #Set up the shell environment
    set -u
    trap "echo 'logout'" 0
    umask 012
    else
    #Set up the shell environment
    set -u
    trap "echo 'logout'" 0
    umask 012
    # Set up Oracle environment
    . /usr/local/bin/envch
    fi
The conditional uses -n for not null, or in other words it is True if the variable is defined but false if it is not.
The variable $SSH_CLIENT is defined when logging in through ssh, but undefined when using another terminal method.
If it is an ssh shell I still setup other environment variables, but I have to move the "set -u" line to a result of the conditional as placing it before the conditional will make the -n test condition invalid. (It will cause references to an undefined variable to return an error rather than null). If it is not an ssh shell I again setup the variables but also call the interactive component of the login as it's own script.
I have tested this successfully and will now move on with the rest of the maintenance wizard installation.
    Thank you,
    Adam

  • HT204380 Is there a way of using the same FaceTime account on multiple devices?

Is there a way of using the same FaceTime account on multiple devices?

Yes you can use the same Apple ID on multiple devices and FaceTime with each one. You have to associate a different email address on all but one of the devices.
Lets say you have two iPads and two iPods..... All sharing the same Apple ID. When you set up FaceTime on three of the devices, you have to associate another mail address in Settings>FaceTime>You can be reached for Video calls at>Add Another email address. Add a different email address in that setting and let Apple verify the address.
After that email address has been verified by Apple (they send you an email to that address so look for it in the inboxes of that email account and follow the instructions in the email), then remove the Apple ID email address on each of those three devices. You can use the primary Apple ID email on the fourth device.
Obviously, you have to have additional email addresses but you can set up free email accounts with AOL, Yahoo, gmail .... and you can use the email address just for FaceTime if you like.

  • Is there a way to change the icon associated with icloud account?

Is there a way to change the icon associated with my iCloud account? It's currently a rose and i do not like it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Are you referring to your iCloud account picture or your user picture?
It looks like you are referring to your user picture. To change it, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, press the picture box and choose the user picture you want from the ones that came by default. If you want to select a different picture stored on your Mac, drag that photo onto the picture box.
If you want to change your iCloud account picture, open http://www.icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID. Then, press your name at the top right of the site and press the user picture. If you put the cursor on the picture box, you will see a button at the top of the box to change your picture

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Is there a way to use the preview in browser function without an Internet connection?

This morning our cable modem was down and I was making some changes to a page in a Muse site I'm designing. I wanted to preview the changes in a browser, but when I clicked on the Preview button (or clicked on preview in browser), I received a notification that it was checking for an Internet connection and the preview page never completed. Is there a way to use the preview in browser function in Muse without an Internet connection?

Thanks for getting back to me! When our cable modem went down, we were still connected to Airport Base Station, and perhaps it appeared to Muse that we did have an Internet connection. In any case, we have now received a new cable modem and our network is working again. As you suggested, I disconnected from the network and tried preview in Muse again, and now it seems to be working just fine. Perhaps it was just the circumstances of our network problem this morning. Good to know I can use the Muse Preview function off-line!

  • Just upgraded to Mavericks and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks?

Just upgraded my 2009 iMac (3.06 Ghz, core 2 duo $GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) to Mavericks OSX 10.9.5 and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Printer says the software was improperly installed. Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks or do I need to go back to Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard?

It's not clear whether your printer is included in the Apple list - there is an Officejet 6100 and a couple of other types. Go to the page linked to above and use the browser search for 6100.
I'm afraid HP are notorious for not supporting older printers - I had the same problem. Probably they hope you will buy another printer (I did, but it was a Canon). I did look on HP's site and couldn't see a driver - you could give it a try (make sure you have the exactly correct printer name):
    http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support-search.html?tab=1#/qryterm=HP6100&search_search type=s-002
Alternatively ou could try Gutenprint (open source software):
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
I found it would indeed drive the printer, but the colour dithering wasn't very satisfactory and the duplex printing bolt-on wouldn't work. However as Gutenprint is free it's worth trying to see if it's any good for you.

  • I'm going to be using a borrowed computer, so don't want to make permanent changes to that FF. Is there a way to sync the FF settings and keep them on a thumb drive for temporary use?

Is there a way to sync the FF settings and keep them on a thumb drive for temporary use? I know you can try to copy the "default" folder in .mozilla, but that usually ends up a mess. The home computer runs on Linux, don't know what the borrowed one will be.

There's Portable Firefox for Windows - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable - and another for Macs - http://www.freesmug.org/portableapps/firefox/ - not for Linux, AFAIK.
Firefox Sync works thru a server, either Mozilla's sync server or a local sync server the user has running on their own LAN. There's no way to sync the data to a thumb drive unless it has a version of Firefox on that thumb drive.
You didn't mention which "settings" are involved, but you can export your Firefox bookmarks in HTML format to a thumb drive, and view that bookmarks.html file on any web browser on just about any operating system.
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks ''(or Organize Bookmarks for 3.6 and earlier versions)''-> Import & Backup - Export HTML...
For your other personal data in Firefox, there is no real solution outside of using Firefox.
