Restore your iPhone with current iTunes on your computer. See if fixed. If still problem and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, try Virtual Home Button, tap Settings App > General > Accessibiltiy > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Home.

security updates were also made available for Mountain Lion and Lion. Snow Leopard is apparently no longer supported.

Ipad 3rd generation, iOS 8, home button issue, with fix

I have seen a lot of iOS 8 home button issues on phones but not much on the iPad. But I started having problems right away. Clicking would not get be back to the home screen. Clicking did not get me out of program. It was all intermittent too.
I found a good you tube video about ipad home button issues. First I tried recalibrating the home button. You hold the power switch down till you get the slider to turn off the iPad. then let go and hold down the home button till the screen changes. that seemed to fix most of the problems for a couple hours. But then it came back.
Next tried putting a drop of isopropyl Alcohol on my finger tip and pushed down and up on the outside edge of the home button, all around the circumference. Then did the cal again. That seems to have worked permanently.
iOS 8 is still slow but I guess everyone has that on anything older than a year.

Oh and Meg offered the right answer. Put your Apps in Folders, which will create extra space for the apps which have disappeared.

If the new phone has already been setup, make sure the phone and iTunes are both set to the same account.
You might also have to authorize this computer for the new device under the store menu.

IOS 7 feature request: Option for home button to home not folder. Maybe for some this workflow is good but not for me. To many clicks. At least give the option to have my home button take me to my home page. 9 times out of 10 that's where I want to go. Not back to my folder.

IOS 8 versus the Home Button

Starting day one using IOS8, I have had issues with the home button. Whenever I click "once" it pops up the app switcher. It is random, and frequent and annoying. After reboot it is "ok", but after use of the phone over a few hours, the apps begin to not close when the home button is clicked. The problem is progressive in nature and the phone becomes difficult to operate when the only option is to switch apps or scrolls left to the home screen and select an app.
Phone Info:
IPhone 5, purchased 2012
Upgraded to IOS 8 on go live day (dont yell at me....)
Have taken all updates and currently on version 8.0.2.
Have taken care of the phone very well, without any functional issues since purchase.
What I have done to "fix" the problem:
1. Soft-shutdown-reboot normally
     Result: Fixes the problem for a few app openings. After use for a few hours, the problem occurs again.
2. Hard-shutdown-reboot
     Result: Longer period of time before the issue returns. After apps are used throughout the day, will eventually become more frequent.
3. "Reset Trick" = (Open native ios app and hold home button until app crashes)
     Result: Small fix time. Returns within an hour of use.
4. Set accessibility>home button click speed to slow or slowest
     Result: No change
Other symptoms:
1. Apps are sluggish to open. Clicking home button does not bring up the lock screen quickly. Slow to load once issue has begun.
2. Banners are slow to go away or stick until acted upon.
3. IOS apps (native and otherwise) are slow to open in comparison to IOS7.
Possible causes:
1. Memory Leak of one or more apps
2. App switching not allowing for graceful memory allocation of apps
3. Sensitivity of button press set too high.
4. Other??
Any other ideas are welcome.

It seems as if when I push my home button there is a loud click or a clicking noise that shouldn't be there. If I push the home button in certain areas or kind of on the side it's not so bad. Also it seems as if the button is kind of loose or wiggles a little bit and can also feel the little silver ring and seems as if it's either not on properly or the home button is sunken in pretty good. I was at the Apple Store and checked out some display models and didn't notice it on those and they all felt solid. Has anyone else had this issue or experienced this? ok...the doctor is in!....well, yes I agree with other posts concerning "clicky" crunchy touch id/home buttons...ah... we do swaps, cleanings, alcohol wipes....NO NO NO! yes dirt can and will trap inside the extreme minor spaces around the home button and the screen cutout..yes twirling a q-tip round the button only stuffs grime deeper in, but can clean the edge...in this case, that crunch you hear (new out-of-box), its a very popular notice that most do hear a crunchy glass-like snapping sound...being that the touch id does have a sensor ring on the outer side, the actual noise your hearing is ........wait for it......MISS-ALLIGNMENT!!!! yes... pop that sucker open, remove bracket....what do you see??. touch id pressed thru and adheared around the ends of the button...and also most cases, not perfectly aligned..that noise is the actual ring brushing against the screen hole cutout causing metal and glass to bind against eachother... re-seating the button will correct the issue..being that theyre so close together, the slightest miss-alignment can cause that annoying crunchy click sound. find a swap that doesn't...ok that one works but now the silent switch is loose!!!!! ive seen it all

My ipod touch 4th gen home button was working not perfectly when i first got my ipod and when i tapped it to exit an app i got stuck and wont pop back up and i have no idea on how to fix it my warrenty expired and i dont get paid for awhile i'm currently using the assisstive touch option but it's not the greatest thing if anyone knows a quick and easy way to fix it i'd be very thankful
