Is there Any Terminal Command to Bring Icon, Doc, App & Window Size to Default

Hi. Is there a kind of universal restore to default (as if it was freshly or cleanly installed) everything in the OS (icon size, dock size, placement or position, app window size default, etc.) either in terminal or some hidden restore to default button in Lion and Leopard? Or everything has to be adjusted manually? Thank you in advance.
Gbu.

You could delete the plists for the things that control those options. The system will then recreate the default plists. plists are preference list files stored in you user/Library/Preferences folder or in the main /Library/Preferences folders. Most can just be deleted without problems; however, some contain setup information (like Mail's) that is difficult to recreate, so moving the plist first so you can restore it if everything goes wonky.
For Finder windows, there is a hidden .DS_Store file that keeps the window settings for each folder. I'm sure I've seen a command to hunt down and delete all of those files.

  • Is there any Terminal Command that will test how my RAM is running?

Does anyone know how I can test my RAM efficiency? Because i just upgraded my MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2009) from 4GB of RAM to 8GB of RAM and I'm not really telling any difference..

Without knowing what you do, what software is running concurrently, I can't say. But here's some things that may help you. They are a little technical:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Is there a Terminal command that will pick up DNS numbers?

    Hello all,
Is there a Terminal command that will pick up the DNS numbers utilized by a router?
The router options don't show any, though the router is set to use PPPoA to pick them up.
    I kindly TIA,
    Eme '~[ )♥♪

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
What do you mean by "pick up"?
I mean to show what the DNS numbers are that the router is using.
They are not entered in the DNS server field in Networks, TCP/IP tab.
If you mean refresh the client settings, the DNS settings are obtained as part of the DHCP lease (or PPP connection in the case of PPP).
The user/ OP is actually using PPPoA, when i googled PPPoA.. seems he is using Cisco perhaps.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-PointProtocol_overATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
"PPPOA or PPPoA, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM, is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in ATM AAL5. It is used mainly with cable modem, DSL and ADSL services.
It offers standard PPP features such as authentication, encryption, and compression. If it is used as the connection encapsulation method on an ATM based network it can reduce overhead slightly (around 0.58%) in comparison to PPPoE".
Essentially the original poster removed the OpenDNS #s from his DNS server field in the TCP/IP tab (b/c they seem to make Adobe.com inaccessible to him)
removing them & allowing his router to "pick them up from the ISP" seems to solved his problem.
However he can not, find what the numbers are that are being utilized,
b/c they are not entered as usual in the Network, & part of the DHCP lease,
    or in Airport admin Utility.
I/ we wondered, if there was a Terminal command that will show what the
numbers are that are being used .
Does that help clarify what I mean? Sorry to be so long winded.

  • Any terminal commands to allow certain apps to over ride screen saver?

I have always wondered if there are any terminal commands to over ride the screen saver when certain programs are running, such as slide shows and the current iTunes 10?

Those commands would just change various preferences settings. You might take a look at Caffeine.

In it's current incarnation, Essbase MDX can't do this, I believe it is coming in a future release, but I wouldn't expect it too soon, maybe within a year. There are others that can provide more insight if and when it will be available.<BR><BR>By the way, I'm assuming this is an Aggregate Storage Database. Is there anything else on the drive?  If not, just erase it with Disk Utility.

  • Is there any way to see full icon label on desktop or in folder?

Is there any way to see full icon label on desktop or in folder...like in windows...for example for "Macintosh HD" I see "Mac...HD", but I want to see "Macinto..."? Is there any way to change this? I have in many folder files with similar names, and I need to click twice on each file to see its full name and it can be really annoying...

In Finder, just drag the divider bar further to the right while holding down the option key to see the full label (using the 'option' key will make the width preference stick).
On the desktop icon, hold down 'contro'l and click on the icon. Choose 'Show view options' then make the grid spacing larger.

Is there any way to disable preview-icons & fileinfo for connected drives?
i.e. when i'm connecting to SMB share, and i see .mp4 file, i see icon change to video-frame.
and when i see folder, i see "5 items"
and i wanna disable it per-dir or per-connect.

The dispatcher caches the entire HTTP response body, so doing what you are describing actually requires two steps:
    1) Loading the non-cacheable component through Ajax (or some other edge side assembly technology like ESI)
    2) Including the Dispatcher: no-cache header in the response when that component is requested.
#1 is pretty easy to do with jQuery
    #2 is covered here: http://dev.day.com/content/kb/home/Dispatcher/faq-s/DispatcherNoCache.html
You will probably want to use the WCMMode to only do the dynamic loading on the publish server.

  • Slipstreaming: Is there a Terminal Command or an App to Slipstream 10.5 with 10.5.8 Combo Update so It Become One .DMG for Burning Purposes?

Hi. Is there a Terminal command or an App for OS X (Snow Leopard which I'm using now as a backup OS X from an external USB drive) that can slipstream the 10.5.8 combo update to 10.5 retail installer (I 10.5.8 for an experiment) to be burned to either DVD and other media like with this Windows 8 app:
    http://lifehacker.com/how-to-slipstream-windows-updates-into-your-installatio-15 62956432
Thank you in advance. Have a great week.

Ya, I'd love to have the computers connected to the Xserver, unfortunately against my heeding, I was ordered to take them off of the Xserver, so they only have a local account that automatically logs in on startup, and even though I have Parental Controls set, I can not stop them from going to Safari, selecting an inappropriate image and setting it as the background, so now I’ve been ordered to fix all of the backgrounds that people are messing with.
My Xserver is running OS X 10.4.11 Server Edition. Yes, I would love a new server, but that’s not happening due to budget cuts.
So what I am hoping for is a command that I can put into Apple Remote Desktop v3.5.3 and push out to all of the computers via its Unix commands and reset all the desktops to their default image.

  • Is there a Terminal command to eject disk?

My MBP wont start up and I used my friends install disk to try and reboot it, bnut it would not work and I cannot eject the disk.
Is there a Terminal command that will eject the disk.
MY MBP won't boot so it os booting from teh Install disks.

In researching this I discovered that you can put a permanent eject button on the top menu bar as follows:
    go to System->Library->Core Services->Menu Extras
There you will find a veritable treasure-trove of extras, one of which is the eject.menu.
Double-click on the item to install it on the top menu bar.
    Extra bonus:
There are many other items in the Menu Extras folder that you can install on the menu bar the same way.
To remove a menu bar item, hold down the Command key and drag the menu item onto the desktop. You will get a "poof" as it disappears. Only the link is "poofed" not the actual item.

Any one who can point us in the right direction that would be great and we would be very grateful. Thanks So Much

Lojack for laptops - if that is the product you purchased and installed, you will need to read the user manual or contact the manufacturer as it is 3rd party.  You did file a police report right?
