Is Time Capsule a Floored Device?

So I have had my TC for around 5 weeks now. I love the concept of the device, as I'm sure many of you do. But, you may disagree, & I don't really want to say it but, TC is a floored device.
Their was never a question of me returning the device, within 14 days of purchase I think It is, I don't give in that easy. Also I'm not an IT specialist, so TC & a home network is never going to be childs play. I accept that.
But TWO weeks to set up, with valuable help from this forum, is crazy. Wired innitial back up ok, then the wireless ones fail. Internet working then back ups fail, back ups work then the Internet fails!!
Then a week of bliss, IT WORKS AT LAST. Back ups are not lightning fast but perfectly ok, Internet, full reliable & fast.
Then, the dreaded, the **** that is the deep traversal!!! Why? Whats that all about? What is the solution? Out comes disk utility & 3 days later all is well. Its working again, then a week later its deep traversal time & the whole cycle starts again!!
Anyway thats my experience of TC, & I hope one day I don't realize its there, then I know its doing its job. Until then i consider TC to be a floored, unreliable, yet potentially fantastic device.
Thoughts??

Have been Apple products exclusively for 10 years, home, US office and Asian office. Bought TC a week ago and have spent more time trying to get just my travel laptop initial BU done than I have on setting up the 20 or so Macs I have purchased in the past 3 years. Not only disappointing but signals that Apple has wandered from it's core values and is now releasing products way too early and allowing their customers to identify their product weaknesses (flaws). Too bad. In this week while I have made 5 failed attempts to get an initial BU of this MacBook, I have continued my routine using the Backup" program, without fail and with a total invested time of about 5 minutes.
This TC is probably going back as did the MacBook Air which has it's own weakness - the virtual disk which makes migration impossible. Apple feigns no knowledge of issues, but when I returned the MacBook air there was no question asked and no restocking fee assessed. I'll bet the same will be the case with this TC

  • How to set time capsule as a device in finder

Im trying to download some video and photos from my time cpsule. the problem is that I dont see it as a device in finder. I mnaged somehow to see it once and then i upload some photos but now I can not view them. I can do backup without any problem. I just need to find out how to get it as a device in finder.

You will not see the Time Capsule as a Device in the Finder.
Open Finder or Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder representing the Time Capsule disk will appear to the right.
Double click the folder to mount the Time Capsule drive on the desktop.  You can drag/drop or copy/paste to the drive.

  • I set up a new airport time capsule. Most devices work fine however now my apple tv 2nd gen won't work.

I set up a new airport time capsule. Most devices connected fine however now my apple tv 2nd gen won't work. I turn it on and it searches for time and date but goes no further. I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?

I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?
Does that mean you cannot move it to the TC and plug in by ethernet? What does bypass mean?
I would still move it closer to the TC.. and just trial it there. Range on some AC models for 2.4ghz is worse than old one. For some people.
Another thing to try is fixed wireless channels.. one of the very few options still available in the AC model.. lock the 2.4ghz to 11, 6, 1 .. try it in that order.

  • How use time capsule with IOs device ?

    Hi ..
I have 2 time capsule and iphone and ipod touch
and i saw this on apples website...
how can I use the time capsule with IOs devices please ?
    thanks a lot.
    here is the picture

Thanks for the clarification....(our crystal ball is broken).
You might want to take a look at an App like FileBrowser.

The experts in the iPad support area will probably have more ideas for you as well if you want to post over there.

  • Time Capsule Disconnects OTHER devices on wireless network during backup?

    Hi everyone,
I need help here. I have a 500gb TC as my wireless base station as well as my backup for a new-ish 2.8 iMac. I have 2 laptops on the network as well as 2 airport express stations that just serve speakers. The house is a small 1-floor 3-bedroom.
Every time my iMac does a time machine backup (which is often), the airport express bricks lose their music streams, and the laptops (a original Macbook Pro and a previous gen. MacBook) lose their internet and network connection - BUT they still show full signal strength and show that they are connected to the network.
The only thing that seems to "solve" it is for me to turn my computer airport off then back on and wait for it to re-join the network.
I have tried resetting my Time capsule - which only resulted in a VERY slow initial backup which took over 2 days to back up 200gb worth of data and then back to the same problem.
I have the TC set up as a mixed n/b/g network, and I have one express brick extending the network ('cause I thought a weak signal might be the problem but it appears not), and the other brick joining the network. All firmware/ software is up to date. Any help is appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    jb

    jwbeaton,
While it doesn't directly relate to your connectivity issue, might I suggest not storing other files on the TC. Use and external disk attached to the TC via USB.
*Using a Time Machine Hard Disk (or Time Capsule) for Other Files*
Here is Apples’ line on this: “Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your backup disk, Time Machine won’t back up those files, and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.” [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11430.html]
This hasn't stopped some from successfully partitioning Time Machine hard disks and storing data on the other partition. As long as the Time Machine backup has its' own partition, you avoid any potential opportunities for conflict.
However, this is not an option for Time Capsule users as there is no easy way of partitioning the Time Capsules’ internal hard disk without elaborate effort. Granted, the Time Capsule is advertised as being able to perform both as a Time Machine backup destination and as a shared network drive [Apple Store (U.S.) - Time Capsule - 500 GB]
Nevertheless, some have experienced problems with maintaining files/folders occupying the same disk as Time Machine backups. In this case, they use the Time Capsule hard disk solely for Time Machine backups. Then attach an external hard disk to the Time Capsules USB port and store additional files there. This added disk will still be available to all Macs that can access the Time Capsule. (Note though, that any USB disks attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule can not then be backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine. Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.)
    Hope this is helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Time Capsule disappears from device list when wireless is toggled

When I toggle wireless on and off, either via profile or Airport > Wireless, sometimes my base station disappears from the list of devices in Airport Utility:
Has anyone else seen this? My Time Capsule reappears after I close and reopen Airport Utility.

I may not be understanding what you mean but unless you have the TC connected via ethernet it will disappear when you turn airport off, it would come back up when you turn it on but it may take a few minutes.

  • Accessing the music stored on my Time Capsule from other devices (iPad, MacBook)

I have cpoied my music onto my Time Capsule/Airport.   I am trying to figure out how I can access that music from the other devices I have connected to the network including my MacBook Pro and iPad 2.

    sparkylulu wrote:
I have a Time Capsule that, among other things, is my primary storage space for music. I don't keep anything on my macbook, I just point iTunes to the Capsule and play everything off of that. Here's my question and I apologize if it's rudimentary.
How do I backup the backup?
What backup? If the only copy of your stuff is on the Time Capsule, you have no backups!
I have a couple of other EHDs from before I got the Capsule. Specifically a LaCie. It's just sitting with nothing to do now. Is there an easy way to copy the 100+g of music from the Capsule to the LaCie or another EHD? I'm sure this is an easy thing to do and I'm just OCD enough to not be able to figure it out.
You can "archive" the TC's contents to a USB drive connected to it. That has some serious downsides, but if you have no other copies of your data, it would be a good thing to do quickly, then figure out a better alternative. See [Time Capsule: Using AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281].
Time Machine, like many backup apps, cannot back up from a network location. I've never used it, but the Chronosync app might be suitable.

  • Setup Time Capsule as wireless device and Time Machine with Ethernet?

I'm running the latest version of Airport Utility (6.3.4) with a TC a1254 and Macbook Pro platinum late 2007.
      I have a modem/router Ryge model Wa41r.
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I tried letting it configure itself, it held the wifi signal for over 5 min then turned off. Never that way worked again.
Then I configured with other examples seen in Apple communities and expert Apple pages, but it conflicted with my routers signal. I turned off the Wireless Lan Interface and it turned off the Ethernet cable with the connection as well. I tried giving my TC different IP address.
So my Time Capsule  gives me this status in flicking amber: Internet connection and Conflicting DCHP Range. (when I connect to my Mac the Internet works)
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
Works fine doing backups when asked via ethernet.
Also when I go to check on it on Airport Utility in other wifi devices it appears but says "Device Not Found - device name- was previously part of your network. Check that is still in range...etc"

I would like to help you but you need to clear up some things..
A Time Capsule is plugged into the network by ethernet.. you back up to it using wireless or ethernet.. it should make no difference which.
    When you say this..
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I cannot understand.. The Time Capsule plugs into the main modem router.. and should be in bridge mode..
Time Machine is not hardware.. it is  the backup software on the computer.. there is no way you can connect Time Machine with ethernet cable. .you can connect the computer with Ethernet Cable..
But you need to clarify please.
If you wish to connect TC to the Modem router by wireless this is not possible. It must connect by ethernet.
You can connect your computer to it using either wireless or ethernet.
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
It is likely the wireless name is not valid.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. 2-20 characters.. Do not use the Apple recommended names.. they can be totally wrong.
Also the password for wireless should be 8-20 characters but same rules.. pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
    Start again.
    Factory reset the TC.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Plug it into the main router by ethernet.
Do the setup via the airport utility in a Mac or iOS device.
    Follow the setup instructions above.
Then you can connect to the TC LAN ports by ethernet or use wireless on the computer.
Your modem WA41R. I cannot find details in English . .they are all Spanish so we may be having difficulty of language here.
But if the modem is working as router the TC has to be in bridge mode.. it will not work properly in router mode.
So you should see it set as bridge here.

  • Time Capsule as remote device for internet connection sharing

I'm doing tech support for my parents. They have a Netopia DSL/4-port ethernet router/wireless router in one room. They just bought a Time Capsule. They have three laptops: one PowerBook G4 with airport. one PowerBook G4 without airport, and one iBook G3.
The Netopia router is in one room (Room A).
Mom's two airport-less computers are in another room (Room B).
I've set up the Time Capsure in Room B, with it set up to extend the wireless network from the DSL wireless router in Room A.
As far as a wireless Airport Disk, it works. However, when I use ethernet cables to connect the computers that do not have airport, I cannot get the airport disk to show up for either of them. Network preferences for each wired computer shows that ethernet is connected but that it has a self-assigned address and cannot connect to the internet.
When a Time Capsule is set up to extend a wireless network, can you use ethernet cables to hook up non-airport computers to the Time Capsule? Access the internet from it (DSL router - wireless to Time Capsules - wired to PowerBook G4)? Access the Time Capsules own drive (It's not showing up as a server in finder when connected via ethernet cable).

I assume you have configured the Time Capsule as a wireless client on this existing wireless network. "Extending" the existing wireless network with a Time Capsule (ie configuring it as a remote base station) is not possible, since the Netopia wireless router doesn't support this mode of operation of the Time Capsule.
Although not explicitly stated in Apple's documentation for the Time Capsule it is my assumption that the Time Capsule - when configured as a wireless client on a wireless network - does not have active ethernet ports and cannot be used as a wireless-to-wired bridge device.

  • Time Capsule as Backup Device Only

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to buy Time Capsule as my backup device. I have an existing Netgear Wi-Fi router that I want to continue using. From what I've read Time Capsule is also equipped to serve as the wireless network router as well (or am I misunderstanding this?). Is this easy to install as only a backup device or will this conflict with my current router?  I'm not a techy so not really sure how all these components play together.
    Thanks,
    Tom

The basic router inside the TC is easily turned off. As is wireless.. so it becomes a dumb network accessible hard disk for TM backups.. that is simple to setup. The TC must be part of the network but has no role in it.
But you are paying a lot more for a device that is a router with a hard disk in it.. than buying a single disk TM ready NAS.. which is all the TC is for you. On the other hand TC is easy to work with and if you are non-technical it is probably easier to get a TC to do what you want than anything else.. unless you are prepared to plug an external drive into your laptop.. that is faster and superior in lots of ways.. just the hassle of constantly plugging and unplugging.. bad for you, if you forget.. bad for the plugs to be handled that often.. !!

  • Time Capsule as Storeage Device?

I bought a MacBook and a Time Capsule on Fri,
I want to use the time capsule to store all my music and films, keeping my hard drive free,
I cannot achieve this and cant find anything on the web about the process to do so?
    Any ideas?
I do have a USB Hard drive, but I already have my printer on the USB port on the Time Capsule, can both be connected at the same time?
    Thanks for any help/advice
    R

"I want to use the time capsule to store all my music and films, keeping my hard drive free"
    you can easily do this.
your time capsule mounts, just like any other hard drive - you can copy files to and from it.
if you don't see it mounted in your finder window (under the shared tab) or on your desktop, you will need to turn that on.
go to applications > utilities > AirPort Utility
    click on manual setup
i do not have access to my time capsule here, but you are looking for a check box to enable sharing the disk. once you check this, the time capsule should show up in your finder and on your desktop (depending on how you have those preferences set)
"I do have a USB Hard drive, but I already have my printer on the USB port on the Time Capsule, can both be connected at the same time?"
yes, there are many products out there - here is one example:

  • Since installing Time Capsule, all other devices have problem with their internet connection

3 or 4 weeks ago my sister bought herself a Time Capsule to use with her IMac and since we have a big house and the Wifi Connection is pretty weak at her room, she connected it with our devolo dlan ethernet(which makes a connection between the time capsule and the router via electrical cables). I also use the same system for my xbox360/ps4 and never had any problems, but since she no longer has her Imac connected directly(WLan from her Time Capsule) something is messed up. If I don't unplug her Time Capsule I'm not able at all to connect with the Internet with my Xbox360 and with my Ps4 I'm only able once in 6-10 trials and only for about 5-30 seconds. But this isn't even all, my Laptop which has top Connection to our home network and also to the time capsule network sometimesneeds me to change between them for about a dozen times till it finally is able to make a connection with the Internet and even then it loses the connection to the Internet from time to time.
So my Question is, is it possible that the Time Capsule screws up some of the routing of the router and what can I do about it?
My Sister is happy because she finally has a good wifi connection in her room, but it got unbearable for me because it screws up the internet connection of every single electronical gadget I own and I don't want to have to unplug my sisters' time capsule every time she isn't in her room.

Yes, the TC can be messing things up. It is in router mode and is providing the dhcp in the wrong network to clients in the wrong places..
The TC should be in bridge mode.. is it.. ??
Go to the setup of the TC in the airport utility and check the setup.

  • Problem with Time Capsule and wireless devices

Hi, I have a 1TB Time Capsuele 4th Gen. and it has been working since I got it, with only a few problems that were quickly resolved. However, it recently stopped allowing internet access to wireless devices. My home computer is connected on airport and actually does have internet access. However, my iPhone and MacBook, although they are recognizing the network and trying to connect, are being denied internet access. I have restarted everything multiple time, changed wireless details (network name and password) and nothing has worked. Anyone know how to fix this?

Start with a full factory reset and redo the setup again.. the full factory is important.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
No luck then it is faulty.. but it is gen3 or earlier.. all Gen4 TC were available with 2 or 3TB drives.. there is no 1TB Gen4. That makes it Gen3 and over 3 years old.

  • Time Capsule is connected wirelessly and I need to use ethernet ports for other devices.

I have a 1st Gen Time capsule 802.11n and an Airport Extreem round hockey puck style.  My airport utillity program is version 6.2  My OS is 10.7.5 My internet is from a verizon hot spot Jetpak. All my devices, laptop, desk top, printer, and time machine are running off this jetpak.
How can I use the ethernet ports on the back of my time capsule for a device that I had pluged in to my airport extreem?  Before I had verizon, I had hughes net for my internet provider. My time capsule was the main unit in a WDS network with the airport extreem. I no longer have Hughes Net and I need to run this item that was pluged into the airport extreem ethernet port.
Of course with the newer airport utillity software (6.2) I can not control the older airport extreem anymore. This does not help my situation

You need to load the older utility.. 5.6 is still available for lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
WDS is hidden option so hold down the option key..
But I would search around for a cheap airport extreme N square type.. doesn't matter how old and you can pick up the older ones for $50 or so easily.. Then you use wireless extend which works much better than WDS. Using WDS you are killing wireless speed for everything.

  • Time capsule 1st generation - extension with air port extreme

My parents use a time capsule (1st generation) as wireless lan device. As they run a boarding house they wish to provide free internet access to all of their guests (in all rooms). Therefore I bought an air port extreme station to extend the network as this product now (finally) includes the option »guest network«.
The question is the following: *Should I keep the time capsule as basic device connected to the modem and use the air port extreme as extension or do you recommend to set it up vice versa?*
I checked the range of the time capsule: It can be used in already in the first floor but not in the second anymore.
I am really unsure how I should approach this topic and I hope more expirienced users can provide some help to this issue. Maybe you can also give me some security advice. In order to protect kids from misusing this new possiblity I was thinking of using opendns to block certain websites. Maybe there are also betters ways of doing this?

    Need a bit more info.
Now this is what happens when I plug it in:
Plug it into power?? The main router?? Sorry I am unclear what you are plugging it into.
It sounds like you have not done the setup.
The TC should be in bridge and plugged into the current modem router you have.. and powered on full time.
If you cannot access it via the utility, I strongly suggest you buy the apple usb to ethernet dongle.. which helps air people no end.. or use any other computer that has a real ethernet port.
Otherwise set to factory and start over. (this will not do anything to what you already have on the disk).
Hold in reset and power on the TC.. wait about 10sec until the front led rapidly flashes. .then you can connect the computer.. and do the setup.. choose bridge in the Network section of the utility and update the TC.
Then you can plug it into the main router and access it and internet at the same time.. either by TC wireless or the main modem wireless.
Please note. .Gen1 TC is only going to last very little time.. it is already well past the average lifespan.. many died at 2years.. most gone by 4years.. plan on storing nothing important on it.
