Is WAAS 5 that much better than previous versions?

I have never used Cisco WAAS for wan op (I've used BlueCoat and Silverpeak) and have heard less than complimentary comments on its ease of deployment and overall functionality. I am currently looking to replace my aging Bluecoat environment and am curious about people's opinion of 5.X.
From what I have heard it is night and day different and an overall much better better product.
What are the communities opinions? How does it stack up agianst Riverbed and the other players?

Hi Kenny,
you are asking for community opinion. Working for Cisco I can give you my perspective, I hope that counts as well ;-)
You are right about the day and night difference.
One of the reasons is the completely reworked Central Manager GUI, which is using HTML 5 now. So it can be used on iPads or similar as well. But more important is the Look and Feel and usability of version 5, which is perceived very positive from what I take away in my conversations with customers.
Perhaps the biggest addition to the portfolio is a new redirection technology, AppNav (Application Navigation).
With AppNav you can now do loadbalancing and traffic distribution to a WAAS (WAE/WAVE) cluster more easily and in fine granularity. This means, you can distribute certain networks (Branches) or applications to a certain set of WAAS appliances at ease.
What think needs to be mentioned are Cisco's partnerships with leading IT companies in order to jointly work on Application Optimizers and haveing them certified. Best example, if we are talking about the new version (so true for 4.5 as well) is The Citrix ready certification for ICA optimization.
Others inlcude e.g SAP NetWaver, and Microsoft Protocols ( CIFS/SMB /native v2, (e)MAPI, Video Streaming Server, virtual Windows Appliance on WAAS), ...
Other Highlights:
WAAS Express Version 2. You can run WAAS on your Router as an IOS Feature.
SSL scalabilty at 75.000 concurrent sessions on WAVE 8541.
Cloud solution with vWAAS (virtual WAAS).
Hope that give a first impression,
chris

  • How is imovie 08 better than previous versions?

    please offer your suggestions.

I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I much prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
Some people think iMovie 08 is easier to to use because you assemble clips using similar logic as you would with iphoto. iMovie 06 uses a concept of a Timeline (as do all other video editing programs I am aware of).
iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
iMovie 08 is NOT an upgrade of iMovie 06. It is a completely new application. iMovie 08 is better for absolute beginners that don't want to burn a DVD. Most others will like iMovie 06 for its far greater editing power and ease of making DVDs. (Like creating Chapter Markers and Share to iDVD.)
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 is True "timeline based", iMovie 08 is "clip based" (each clip is like its own mini-timeline).
Want a DVD, use iMovie 06.
    Want YouTube, use iMovie 08.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.

  • Firefox 4 is slow in loading web pages, much slower than previous version. WHY?

I am having problems with slow loading of pages, slower than Explorer for the same page for example.
    What can be done?

Have you tried (1) restarting your router, and (2) resetting the wifi on the iPad?  To do #2, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

  • Is the Mountain Lion so much better than the Snow Leopard that make it worth buying?

Is the Mountain Lion so much better than the Snow Leopard that I'm currently using and worth the money to buy it?  Is it more or less confusing to operate?

OS X 10.7-18.0+ will NOT run any current PPC based programs your running.

If you have a MacPro like your signature says (the tower, not the laptop) then it's not going to have much of a performance loss as say the MacBook Pro's will.
Older, less powerful Mac's have performance losses with the newer OS X Lions, it might be best to stick with 10.6.8 on a older machine until it drops, then spend the money on all new software on a newer machine instead.
One guy was here today and had a 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo and it was struggling to run OS X Mountain Lion, Chrome and Photoshop.
It just didn't have the hardware horsepower for all that bloatware.
My advice if it's not a top end iMac or MacPro, then 2010 is the cut-off point, those 2010 machines and earlier are likely better off on 10.6.8 max.
It all depends upon one's perception of performance really.

  • My palm calendar wont open after Lion download.  Palm is so much better than ical,  is it not going to work w/ Lion?

Palm calendar won't open now that I've downloaded Lion. Palm is so much better than ical.  Is there a fix?

I miss Palm Desktop for Mac. The integration of contacts, to-dos, notes, appointments, etc. was great. I stopped using it about a year ago when I finally sold my Palm Tungsten T and purchased and iPhone 4. iCal etc. work fine for me, but they're not as good as Palm Desktop was.
I also miss Graffiti 1 handwriting recognition. I could write with it as fast and flawlessly as I can write longhand on paper, and nearly as fast as I can type. It was the best for meetings and interviews, since I could write without having to look at the screen. iOS has nothing that comes close; I've gotten used to the onscreen keyboard but it's slower, I make far more mistakes, and I have to keep my eye on the screen while typing.
As others have pointed out, Palm Desktop was written for PPC processors. Lion does not include and cannot run Rosetta, which is the emulation environment which allowed Intel processors to run PPC code. So Palm Desktop will not run on a Mac running Lion.
I was syncing to my Palm Tungsten T under Snow Leopard (and using Palm Desktop) with no troubles at all. There are third-party sync options available, but they're all kludgy and unreliable compared to Palm's own syncing. Again, though, the Palm software for syncing was written for PPC processors and so won't run on any Mac booting into Lion.

  • HT1771 why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies

why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies!!!

    HI,
    Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

  • Why is MME playing much better than ASIO4ALL

I have a 64 bit acer Aspire R7 with 8GB RAM and runing windows 8.1. i have bin using adobe audition(now using CS6) for about 10 years now and i have never found myself havin this problem:
1)It so happens that my MME drivers are giving less glitches than the ASIO4ALL.(no matter how much i play around with the buffer size)
2)when using the asio4all during play back, the volume is lower compared to that of the MME drivers.
3)the asio4all icon on the system tray keeps flickering from play(green) to an exclamation mark(red) constantly
i cant use my MME for my projects coz i gat quite a bunch of plugins waiting to join the party...hence it will start glitching too sooner than later(((pliz help!!!help help help!!!!

I'm usin the onboard soundcard.i know have to get an external USB soundcard(guilty)...money issues.((but the thing is i used to run the same version of audition on a much smaller laptop(hp,32 bit,3GB RAM) and it worked far much better than the acer.when i play audio in audition with plugin effects:MME used to lag while ASIO4ALL would play it smoothly.n now i have rather the opposite situation.
    ryclark wrote:
What audio interface are you using with Audition? If you are using the onboard soundcard you would be much better off using an external USB connected one with proper ASIO drivers which bypass the operating system completely.
There should be no difference between using ASIO4All and MME drivers since ASIO4All uses the windows drivers anyway. It converts them to ASIO for audio interfaces that don't have ASIO drivers. However from what I hear Win 8.1 may be causing the problem with your glitchy audio especially if you are using the built in audio
What do you mean there is no difference between ASIO4ALL and MME drivers?then why does audition prompt to use ASIO4ALL if available??

  • Is the macbook pro much better than any other laptop?

I am currently wanting to buy a laptop, I am deciding whether to buy a macbook pro or just a regular laptop. Is it really worth it to spend so much more?
    Thank you! ~ mtumbler

Don't forget where you're asking that question.
Since nearly all people here have Macs, we obviously felt they were worth the price.  "Much better than any other laptop" is a fairly subjective statement.  All the major manufacturers have excellent high-end options.  When comparing prices, you need to compare similar specifications and quality.  You can certainly get cheaper PC computers, but similarly spec'd machines with similar build quality are generally around the same price (and actually sometimes somewhat higher).
The areas that most of us would agree puts Apple at the top are OS X, quality/design, and customer service.  Only Macs can run OS X.  For those of us that use OS X, we typically prefer it over Windows (by quite a bit).  However, this isn't always a positive for someone moving over from Windows.  There is a little bit of a learning curve.  If you are going to need to be able to do everything you want, you need to understand that it might take a little time to figure everything out.  You can install Windows alongside the Mac OS to help make the transition a little easier, but that requires that you purchase a copy of Windows.  So far as quality and design...  Apple has always been a leader in this area.  However, as I had mentioned earlier, most major manufacturers have caught up in this area... at least with respect to their high-end offerings.  It's really a matter of preference in terms of which you like more.  No one offers the same level of customer service that you'll get from Apple.  No other manufacturer has retail stores like Apple where you can go in with your machine and have someone (who knows about Apple products) check out your machine on the spot.  Their phone support is also excellent and their user support community (where you're at now) is second to none.
So... most of us would agree that we feel Apple products are "better".  But if you were to go to a typica PC forum and ask the same question, you'll find people who would argue fanatically that they're not.  The reality is that there isn't that much of a difference in the hardware.  You need to decide if something like the OS (which you probably don't have much experience using), design, and support are important to you.

  • Just switched to BOOST MOBILE..MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Verizon!

Hello everyone, I switched to Boost Mobile yesterday and so far, I couldn't be happier!  Unlimited talk, text, and web for 50 bucks a month.  The phone I have is the Sanyo Incognito, which is basically the same as the EnV3.  In my office, my Verizon phone would give me 1 bar or less usually, sometimes no service at all.  Boost gives me 2 or 3 bars!  The internet is very fast as well.  I recommend everyone switching to Boost when their Verizon contracts are up.  It is a much better deal than force-data-plan verizon.

Ok first...Being in the woods was an example, Take yourself outside of that city per business relations, family functions, vacation, whatever you so choose to and see where Boost will take you. There is a reason Sprint, Nextel and Boost are in a "cheap" phase of there small and unbeneficial network because its there way of begging consumers to sign up because they are falling apart...check your stock markets and last quarter sales of anything Sprint related and see.
And yes Boost is way behind on technology, your new phone that came out in December does not do half of what smartphones can. And calling out the extra 120 bucks, that depends on the person! And just to pass you some more information since you love CDMA networks. Boosts first ever smart phone (which proves how far behind technology they are) is not ran on CDMA it runs on iden.
And not ever have I thought about being ripped off from Verizon network, And god forbid if you live in  mobile home or walk into a hospital or a building made of anything besides wood and actually get a signal. My sister has had boost for a couple years now and I have never been able to call her were she actually answered the phone, always have to leave a message cause she is not getting signal and she calls me back an hour later. So, apologies but Boost and Verizon is not a likely comparison when all there is to use is a monthly bill that its simply cheaper. Boost is the bottom end of totem pole with Cricket. As stated before, Verizon has over 90 million customers strong, Able to handle all Million running the web, voice and text when Boost regularly has tower outages due to overload of there 5.2 million customers.
Now for highlights of Boosts up to date phone that is to be released June 20th! (let's see there up to date tech) These are direct quotes from the website!
Michael found the Flash Lite support was only practical with a WiFi connection, due to the slow data speeds found on the iDEN network connection.
It runs a generic Android 1.5 build without MOTOBLUR, which means it only had three homescreen panels to customize instead of five.
The device also runs on a slower iDEN data network (25kbps), which is why the Opera Mini browser, which is optimized better for slow connections, was included.

  • My Nano 5th Gen loses battery strength rapidly while listening to the radio.  Should there be that much difference than listening to an audiobook or music?

Should there really be that much difference in the use of battery power between listening to the radio and listening to an audiobook or music?

  • ITunes 7.7 taking longer to load than previous version

After upgrading to iTunes 7.7, I noticed it's taken significantly longer to load than the previous version. On average, I see iTunes 7.7 take between 3 to 5 minutes to load.
    No taskbar icon.
    No system tray icon.
I can hear the hard drive spinning. I've already defragmented the hard drive, scanned it for issues and checked drivers, and still iTunes 7.7 takes much longer to load. I thought it froze a few times so I used CTRL-ALT-DEL and brought up the Task Manager to close it thinking it froze, but it doesn't show up in the Applications tab, but under the Processes tab.
    I have Windows XP SP3, 4 GB DDR2 667 RAM, Athlon X2 5000+.
Is there a fix for this ? Or, has anyone else gotten this same problem?

If the PC is running Norton, try this - upgrades to iTunes sometimes don't get recognized by Norton

Just google for 'old itunes versions' if you decide to roll back to v7.6.

  • After Effects CC 2014.0.2 rendering slower than previous version with identical settings

Is this a known issue? Can't find confirmation just some mention of it.
I'm on an 27" iMac with 32GB Ram and SSD. Latest OSX. Latest After Effects.
I first noticed after accidentally opening a file in CC2014 when asked to supply a client a render. It takes almost 3 times longer to render a file. I've checked preferences on latest on and previous version of AE and everything seems identical. Am I going mad?
I guess I could stay on the previous version for a while but hardly ideal as I'm paying for access to the latest versions and need to move up eventually.
    Help much appreciated.
    Anthony

Yes everything is identical. I setup a file ready to render and opened it in each version and rendered. I did this with an old large project file and also a new test file with a very simple 2 minute loop of a square moving left to right.
Beginning to hope the upcoming update fixes it somehow though would prefer to fix and learn something from this...

  • Performance in CS4 worse than previous versions

I use Premiere 2.0 at work and love the stability and smoothness of the editing workflow. Don't get me wrong there are a few hiccups here and there, but what software does not have that?  I use CS4 at home on my core i7 920 6 gigs of ram geforce 285 WD raid 0 setup.  CS4 playback is ok but the editing workflow can be very sluggish.  I know that this performance issue has been reported by many, but there does not seem to be a clear explanation for it. The computer system always gets the blame, but when a previous release of premiere runs perfectly fine on a slower system and the newer CS4 runs worse on a bigger, faster system, it does not make any sense.  I know that some things have been rewritten in the software, but why such a drastic change in performance?  I have been using premiere for years, but this sure is a good way for adobe to push its customers to  look at other NLEs.

    Jim,
I have not compared it to previous versions, but CS4 4.1 on playback from the timeline of a HDV project shows this CPU load:
This is while having numerous processes open (as you can see from the 73 ones active).

  • I understand the design change to the whole "save as app" tab, but I feel that Save and Quit feature from the previous version of Firefox is much better than this "app tab" feature. Is there anyway for me to have this back?

Restore previous session button available on my Firefox homepage is great, but what I really want is the Save and Quit feature. I have always felt that its one of the best features of Firefox, second only to search address bar directly leading me to the actual page. I read some threads about this, and found the answers very unconvincing. One of the suggested ones was "Pin as app tab" . No, I don't want to pin every tab that I want to visit say, thrice as an app. Second suggestion was, click on the obvious button on the homepage to restore the tabs(this took me quite a while to actually see). Why this change in design? This is identical to Chrome's but its very inferior to what Firefox already had. Is there anyway, without downgrading of course, I can get that feature back?

Okay, I found the answer myself. Going to about:config and setting browser.showQuitWarning to true, restored that option and brought it back. Thanks to anyone who is about to post. If this is false by default, it has got to change.
