ISight FireWire

I have an external FireWire 400 iSight camera, a new Mac Mini and an old G4 Mac. The Mac Mini doesn't have a FireWire 400 port, only a FireWire 800 port. Is there a way I can use my iSight without having to buy a converter cable?

Welcome to Discussions, Rainier Feiler
The only way I know that does not use a "converter cable" uses a cable end adapter with your existing Firewire 400 cable instead. However, you can choose from any of the following options that best serve your needs:
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
• Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

• To use your FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

  • Isight firewire cam not working in iChat on Leopard.

After installing Leopard on my Powerbook G4 867 dvi, my Isight Firewire Cam is not working anymore
    in Ichat on Leopard.
Any solutions, it worked fine under Tiger.
Isight firewire cam works fine wirh Skype, Amsn , Photobooth and Quicktime.

Alright. I've done quite a bit of testing now.
My system is (as stated below,) a 12" PowerBook G4, 867 MHz, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, Combo drive, AirPort Extreme. It was purchased in Summer 2003, and while the OS has been reloaded, it hasn't been for a long time, and at present, the OS was an install of Jaguar that was upgraded to Panther to Tigard, finally to Leopard.
I was experiencing the issue mentioned. In my case, I use a FireWire miniDV camcorder for video in iChat. It has worked fine in the iChat AV beta in Jaguar, and iChat AV in Panther and Tiger.
Upon upgrading to Leopard, I get the "Slow Network" explanation for why I cannot use video (or hosting multiperson audio, or screen sharing.)
    My research shows the following:
This occurs both on the upgraded install, and a fresh install. (To an external hard drive.)
Using Ecamm's PowerBoost allows me to use every option that isn't barred outright by lack of hardware (video effects.) This includes both "Slow Network" issues and "Insufficient CPU" issues (essentially just multiperson video.)
So my guess is that the "Slow Network" is indeed a "bug", and will be fixed by an update from Apple.

  • Isight firewire extension cable

I need a 10 foot (or 3 meter) firewire cable that will fit the isight holder. Apple refers to this as a thin firewire and it must be able to snap in the transistion piece between the camera and the stand. Most aftermarket cables are too thick due to rubber caldding around plug. Has anybody found such a cable that fits??? Or maybe cut down the rubber to make it fit ? I am familiar with hubs and repeaters and it appears that firewire depot sells a male/female extension, but i'm looking for just the simple solution of a single cable.

OK, so I've found a solution that, while not as simple and elegant as a single cable, solves my problem. After looking at male/ female cables at venders like L-COM.COM( which also sells a nifty shielded panel connector that also can act as a connector between the apple cable and an after market cable), I decided that this would work best with the short apple isight firewire cable so as not to go beyond the recommended distance for firewire without a repeater. Well, these short cables aren't cheap(20.00 to 30.00 bucks). Then add the male/ female aftermarket cable($ 30.00) and it's starting to add up. I also looked at doing a little grinding to the apple mount or adapter(depending on which you use) and shaving down the rubber overmolding on a aftermarket cable, and this looked like it might work. But the final solution was to buy a Griffin sightlight($20.00 through Amazon) that has a real short female receptical that allows me to use any 10 foot cable I wish. This way I spent the least amount of money and got a useful accessory to boot !!

  • External ISight Firewire with Onlocation

Should an external Apple ISight firewire camera work with CS5 Onlocation's real time field monitor (ie vector scope and waveform)?
Also, are there any other specifications for the type of camera that are compatible?
I understand that there are also caveats as non-support of avchd format.
I know this horse has been beat to death...
    Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, any FireWire camera should work fine.

  • ISight FireWire with 2010 Mac Pro

I just picked up an iSight FireWire Camera off Craigslist. Since my Mac Pro does not have a FireWire 400 port I picked up a Belkin FireWire 800/400 9-pin to 6-pin cable.
When I plug the iSight into the rear FireWire 800 port iChat starts and the green light on top of the iSight camera is illuminated. I can see video clearly, but there is no audio. I check System Profiler and System Preferences and everything is listed and selected as they should be.
Does anyone have any ideas why I would not be getting any audio?

  • ISight (firewire external) and Adobe Onlocation software

Adobe requires a firewire to work with onlocation.
Is the external ISight firewire camera compatible with onlocation?
Has anyone tried to work with this on a Mac?
Specifically, I want to use the wave generator and vectorscope feature within the Adobe software.

    Hi,
I have no information on this.
Having said that I have not heard of an App that could not see an External iSight.
I did find this http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405857.html that lists known issues and some problems with some sample rates and Audio Card abilities.

  • ISight, FireWire Port, eMac

I am trying (to help a friend) to connect an isight to an eMac running OS X 2.8 -- there are 2 FireWire ports on the side. When I plug in the cord, the camera's light turns on for about 3 seconds. iChat has no indication that there's a video camera attached. The System Controller does not even mention FireWire ports. I have read thru this topic and tried unplugging the computer (& camera) for 1 hr & then turning on the computer to reset the FireWire ports. Nada --
Will the camera turn on if the ports are not "hot?" I DO see them on the side of the computer! They ARE here! I have nothing else to test the camera on -- or to test the ports with. Any thoughts?
I took off the back and pushed anything that looked remotely like a button -- There was nothing, really, that pushed back! I took out the cards and reseated them. I unhooked the board and reseated that, too. In the Apple Sysyem Profiler, under Devices and Volumes, the FireWire Port says () --
I am beginning to think that this eMac 10.2.8 is not capable of video. The iChat turns on when I plug in the iSight, however there is no indication that it has video power like on my iMac -- There's no video tab here. There's no iSight listed in the system profiler.
Is that possible that I can't use video on this machine?
    Thanks!
(Please disregard MY computer stuff listed -- this question is NOT about MY computer)
    Thanks!

need to upgrade iChat & iSight -- Then all's well.

  • ISight Firewire Cable for Transfer

My new iMac is supposed to arrive on Monday or Tuesday. Do you think the Firewire cable that came with my iSight camera would work when I use the Migration Assistant on my new iMac from my iMac G5?

    Hi Adamguy:
    Congrats on your new purchase.
I just looked at my iSight cable and it appears that it would work to connect the 2 machines for data transfer.

  • Older iSight (Firewire 400) on New Mac Mini Intel (Firewire 800)?

Hi! I have an older iSight camera (circa 2003), model number A1023/EMC no. 1950, which uses the older FIrewire 400. It was purchased with one of the first gen Mac Mini's (PowerPC) which I still have.
I've upgraded and now have a new Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the newer Firewire 800 port. I have a Firewire 400->800 adapter, and when I plug the iSight in, the green light on the camera lights up, but then goes off. The system doesn't recognize the camera (System Profiler/Hardware/FIrewire). iChat doesn't see a camera.
    This is the adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HMTV1I/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Under the profiler/firewire, I see " Firewire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" but no entries for the camera.
Is the problem in the adapter? The computer, or the camera? Is there a way to force the Firewire 800 port speed down to 400? Don't know what to do. Thanks for any advice! --michael

    Hello michael
Connecting your iNtel min's Firewire to any Firewire 400 cable automatically sets the correct speed.
If your iSight and cable will work with other Macs and if Firewire 800 devices will work with your new mini, perhaps your new adapter is faulty.
My method for verifying external iSight function is explained here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
You will need to add your adapter to the other connectivity devices (ports & cables) that must be tested.
If other Firewire devices can be recognized by your new mini, the next tests I would suggest is to connect your adapter, FW-800 cable, and iSight to your old mini to see whether it still works there. If not, and if you have reset your iNtel mini's Firewire ports, the cable or adapter you have may be defective.
If iSight works with the new cable and adapter on the old mini but not with the iNtel one, apply all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight Troubleshooting article to your new mini:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The reset suggested there sometimes restores proper iSight function.
One other possibility is that a different brand of FW800 cable might work for you. Depending on which FW800 cable you are using, this thread may be of interest:

  • Isight firewire issue

    This is just FYI:
I purchased a new isight (12/06) and had a terrible time getting it to work on my dual processor G5. Finally, after fussing around with everything, I realized that, at least on my system, this is one of those firewire devices that is sensitive to anything but being plugged directly into the computer. So if you are having trouble with an isight, and it is plugged into another firewire device for convenience, you might try plugging it in direct. For me, it solved all the problems I was having, such as the green light being on, but the program not finding it.
    Have fun!

As Tony said above, "Known problem."
A bit more detail for those of you with the external iSight.
It has been detailed in a number of threads, but the external FW iSight may have a problem working with any other external FW device.
My suggestion is to only have the iSight plugged in to your Mac when you intend to use it. If there are other ext. FW HD's plugged in at the same time (or scanners or...) there is a chance that you may lose the device mounting, or if in the middle of a data transfer, data.
I personally have not had a problem, so it's hit and miss, but there have been enough reports to post this reminder.

  • Need to adapt iMac iSight Firewire connector to USB for testing

My foundation recently recieved a donation of a number of early Intel iMacs (1.83's).  I re-imaged them with 10.6.8, and they all work fine, except that the iSight camera in about 50% of them doesn't work.  I checked, and they don't show up on the Profiler under usb.  I pulled the front panel on one and it all seems normal.  The iSight has a mini Firewire connector on it, (a bit strange for a USB device), so is there a way to spice a USB with a Firewire cord, so I can try plugging the camera into another computer to verify it's operation?  50% sounds a bit high for outright failure on these, especially since their use was prohibited at the school they came from.  I am more apt to believe that this is a software issue of some kind, but i have tried all of the standard suggested "fixes" and nothing seems to help.

I think I would try a SMC Reset before pulling all those units apart.
As old as your iMacs are, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • ISight - Firewire/Beach Ball

Its been working until last night -
Everytime I plug in my Isight on my firewire port - i get beach ball that goes on forever. I unplug it and it resumes normal operation.
I try using with Yahoo, beachball. It just wont communicate. Is it the camera itself, or the firewire port itself?

    Hello ChefScooter
Is it the camera itself, or the firewire port itself?
If you still get the never-ending spinning beach ball even with the green light now working, consider possible hardware or software conflicts, the possibility of a bad Firewire cable or connection, or the possibility that your PowerBook is not recognizing your iSight.
Check relevant suggestions from• Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight and
    • How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional
When you plug iSight into your G4 PowerBook and check its System Profiler, you should see iSight recognized as a Firewire device.
Here is how a screen snapshot of my System Profiler looks when showing that my connected iSight is recognized by my System:
If your "Firewire Device Tree" does NOT show "iSight" when your iSight is plugged in, your system is not recognizing the camera.
In addition to shutting down and unplugging your PowerBook per step "3." of Apple's What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device, you must also remove the battery to try to reset a laptop's Firewire port(s).
Your first post shows OS X 10.4.8. Your next two posts show 10.4.3. If you do not get the problem resolved, please verify that 10.4.8 is correct, that your Mac OS X Maintenance is up to date, and that your iSight problem occurs when using your Powerbook G4 rather than with your PowerMac G3 B&W.

    Hello Carl.
I do not use Xserve, but my external iSights still work without problem on both of my Snow Leopard Macs.
All driver software for external iSight is installed as part of Mac OS. _No separate software came with either of my external iSights_. Perhaps Xserve is different?
Here follow some things that you can consider +if they make sense with Xserve+.
    (1) From your posted system info, I see you have access to Macs running both Mac OS X (10.6.4) and Mac OS X (10.6.2). Does your external iSight work on any of your SL Macs?
    (2) Does Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 give any hints applicable to your Xserve issue?
    (3) Have you tried installing the applicable 10.6.4 Combo Update while your external iSight is connected? I do not know whether the installer checks for Apple peripherals, but it seem possible to me that the installer might be testing Firewire to see if external iSight software components are needed.

  • ISight Firewire Hard Drive issues? Anyone?

Hey there, I just picked up a refurbished 1.83 Core 2 Dou Mac Mini, and I've got a weird issue going on.
The single Firewire port is giving me some greif - I've got a MyBook 500 gig FireWire drive plugged into the port. I've also got an iSight (and a bunch of other FireWire devices) but I seem to have issues chaining them.
When I plug the iSight into the second FireWire port of the drive, it isn't happy. I get a really distored picture, interlaced fields, and it runs at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Then it crashes iChat, or the screen previewing the iSight image goes gray and tells me the "camera is being used by another application".
When I plug the iSight in directly, it works great.
I read some of the other posts and it sounded like it might be a power issue, so I bought a Belkin powered 6 port FireWire hub (I've got a 3G iPod I also need to plug in, and a external dual layer burner, and my FireWire camera, so I needed one anyhow).
Still having the problem! When the iSight is on the same chain as another device, it freaks out. If it's the only device in port, everything is fine.
Anyone else having or had this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi RocketChicken-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
iSight cameras are notorious for being picky about what else is connected to the FW bus. Does it cause problems just being plugged in or only when it is on?
