Isight problem in imac

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with the integrated camera in my IMac.
I wanted to make a picture in Photobooth when I've noticed that the camera didn't work anymore!
At first I thought that the problem was Photobooth because the LED next to the camera was green.
Only the screen from the program was completely black and when I tried to make a picture, the flash
and the 1 2 3 counting also worked. But there was no picture and after one photo I couldn't make another one.
I've also checked the camera with other programs e.g. skype, IMovie...also nothing!
I've restart & unplugged the IMac...nothing!
I've made a PRAM reset...nothing!
I've checked the system profiler...the camera is still there...but I couldn't find the problem and how to solve it!
Does anyone have the same problem and know how to fix it?
I'm very appreciating any help!

HI,
There have been reports that the Newest Skype versions starting with a 5 have not been that good.
What does iMovie look like ?
Do you use iChat ?
If so test the Preview there.
Also try Quicktime Player (New Recording).
If it is only one app then it will be that App that has the issue.

  • Photo Booth and iSight Problems

Hi there. I notice this topic has been covered a few times, but I have tried most of the ideas and with no luck.
When I try to open photo booth is says "Photo Booth cannot open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application." iChat doesn't see the hardware and neither does image capture for example. It is a built in iSight on an iMAC 24". It seems to happen after the 10.4.9 update - but that could be red herring.
I tried to reset the SMC, uninstall my WACOM pen tablet and Canon Lide60 with no luck.
Ralph Johns did make this post:
Go to the Apple icon top left in the Menu Bar.
    Select About the Mac
Clcik the More Info butoon to open the Sytstem Profiler.
    Open the Hardware item
    Click on USB
Check the details on the right for the camera.
and I noticed under USB there are no camera details - does this help get closer to a resolution?
    cheers Pascal

    Hello, Pascal
It does seem you have tried most of the things that help other users.
Although you do not say which iMac you use, as I understand your post, yours has a built-in iSight. If that is correct, when you look in System Profiler and click the following items:
you should see your camera information. If not, your iMac likely needs professional service. Before you go to see your Apple Service Technician, you can consider any of the following items that you think might be relevant. Although some of the following are not a remedy for no iSight in System Profiler, they might help you or other readers who can see their built-in USB iSights in System Profiler but are still experiencing the "camera in use" error.
Do you use the "Mirror" widget in Dashboard? That is one application that people sometimes forget might be running.
If you use an HP printer/scanner, check the suggestion in this post by parkersal.
If you have not yet tried all relevant suggestions in How to Troubleshoot iSight, do so now. Be sure to check whether the problem is application specific as well as user specific.
I understand that you have already reset the SMC, but, if the reset and other Troubleshooting suggestions you perform now do not correct your problem, you can try the following:- Repair permissions.
    - Then download and apply the appropriate combo updater for your iMac:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (iNtel) or
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC)
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight and System Profiler again.Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates, but if your iSight still does not show in System Profiler, I think you should see your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
Please let us know what it takes to get sorted.
    Cheers,
    Jim

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts. The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

Not sure that I have selected the correct forum.  Hope my questions are clearly stated.
Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • ISight problem, time for repair?

iSight suddenly stopped working. No green light. Won't work in iChat, Gmail, or Photo Booth. Message "No camera connected to this computer". I followed the advice given here. Restarted. I checked Utilities >> System Profiler >> USB and saw iSight listed (though it said "not configured yet"). I reset the PRAM, went back to System Profiler and now iSight doesn't show up at all.
Does that pretty much exhaust my efforts? Time to bring it in?
    Many thanks in advance,
    rob

You've tried some good things, Rob. You may be right that it is time for service.
For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there (PMU/SMC for your MacBook) often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
BTW - I note that your posted system info shows Mac OS X (10.4.7). If that is correct, unless you have compelling reasons for not doing so, I suggest you backup your Mac and apply the 10.4.11 Combo Update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
For more info on how to install and benefits of updating, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901
I recommend you use your Mac's Disk Utility to *repair permissions* immediately before *_and again_* immediately after the update. After repairing permissions, use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to apply any additional needed Apple software updates.

  • Problems with iMac retina 5K (artifacts, glitches and etc.)

    Hello dear Apple.
I have bought new iMac with retina 5K display and I have found lot of problem with it. It was December 2014 when I got my first iMac. And after then I have found few real problems with it.
The first problem is I can't open high resolution image with standard Preview.app. I mean 'high resolution' - more then 30-40 megapixels. When I open them, I can see image, but only 2-3 seconds, and after that I see horizontal artifacts only. I can't open images, like this Rembrandt.jpg; Carpaccio.jpg; Holbein.jpg
The second problem, when I change resolution in to scaled mode (System Preferences/Display) for increase image on display. I found when select some area on background of desktop it has left some lines after itself. It is particularly unpleasant if you have plain colour desktop background. You can view, how does it look here.
The next problem with animation in different parts of interface, e.g. sometimes when I open Time Machine some parts of windows are freezing or appear some artifacts or glitches near borders of window. And I have the same situation, when I open Mission Control, or any Adobe app or other, or simply rename a files. I have found few discussions with problems like mine, but in the separate places
    5K iMac - bad GPUs?
    Graphic Problems with Retina iMac
    iMac 5K and indesign glitch
And after that I want to tell you that I have this problems on four (4) iMacs. It was really difficult to arrange four replace. I have lost a lot of time an spent a lot of nerves for discuss and resolve my problems with Apple support. Finally, they told me that they do not know about problems with iMacs, and they could offer give my money back. I glad to get my funds, but now in my country price for iMacs has doubled. And if they refund my money, I can buy half new iMac only.
I am sorry for my language and style, but I do not know what I should doing with that. And should I hope, that my problem resolve with OS X updates? Or it is hardware problem of the whole iMacs 5K...

Yes Ralph, absolutely correct, 4 times. Do you have the graphic card the same as me, or m290? Could I ask you check your iMac for few things, please?
For the first, can you enlarge scale in System preference/Display and install plain dark color desktop background. Are there any footprints after rectangular selection like in my video https://youtu.be/dBglFvjJx1Q?
And for the second, could you download this image https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/07/Rembrandt_Harmensz._van_Rijn _-_Nachtwacht_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg  and open in plain Preview.app, and zoom it? Are there any glitches?
    Thank forward.

  • External Apple isight with a imac G5

Really need help to figure this one out.
I have not used this isight before it has been bought secondhand.
Trying to use an external Apple isight with a imac G5 (without built in isight) running on Leopard OSX 10.5.8.
looked in my Utilities and can't find anything relating to isight.
Done system update and tried to download isight updater 1.0.3 but that does not work for OSX 10.4 or later.
    Many thanks for your time
    Additional Details:
Also when I go into System profiler and look in FireWire it says unknown device.
    and also went into:
    finder/system/library/coreservices/isightupdater
It will ask me to plug in an isight (which I do) to install and still nothing happens.
& also best till last - No green light what so ever
Do you think it maybe broken?
I really hope not as it was sold as fully working

    Welcome to Discussions, jonsonby
Based on the info you posted, if Defcom's good suggestion does not restore proper function, I think the external iSight is defective.
The simplest way to test that for certain is to connect your iSight (use the same cable you use) to another Mac, particularly one that works with a known-good external iSight. If you do not have access to another Mac and/or another external iSight for testing, a local Apple retailer may be able to do the test for you at little or no cost.

Charles P.: Okay, what you need to do unfortunately, is contact Adobe at  http://www.adobe.com and they will need to get your license issue resolved.
Charles P.: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Me: title of error is    Unable to Download
Me: i dont see how that would be an adobe problem?
Charles P.: I understand, but it appears that the reason for the download issue is because of the license error the license is related to the Adobe Digital editions software. I understand how this could be confusing but it's due to the authorization of the ADE software. Adobe would need to correct your account issue with the license
Me: ok but i thought this was a free license from adobe??!!  this is just a digital editions reader, right??
Charles P.: That is correct it is a free license but your account has to be associated with one license and yes the Digital edition is a ebook reader that our ebooks use for you to view

Well, just for the halibut I tried opening the book again today and , GLORY BE!,  it worked.
Guess it may have taken overnight for Adobe to OK my license to their free ADE software. Also works now using Bluefire app as the reader on my android phone, although it was a pain
to get the book file in the right file folder for bluefire to see it.
I hope that time also heels the issue with all other Error Getting License users.

Have you blown the dust out lately?
Does it do better if allowed to cool off for a couple of hours?
What do you see if you hold Option or alt key at bootup?
Does it boot from the install disc holding c key at bootup?

  • Graphics problem on iMac G5 w/ iSight.

I just tried installing a 1GB RAM stick in a 17" iMac G5 (iSight). The machine has 512MB of RAM (the standard), and a 1.9Ghz processor. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.7.
My friend, who owns the iMac told me she'd been seeing some weird graphics artefacts and had been having several lock-ups on the computer which required a forced restart to fix. I didn't know what to make of this and said I'd check it out when I went to install the RAM for them.
The problem alarmed me - rather than a few stray black lines that I had been told about, I found all of the following issues.
    1. Black / White or Transparent lines on windows and toolbars. These were particularly predominant on menus and other semi-transparent parts of the screen, but also occurred on solid windows - such as Safari.
    2. Blank screen - the screen would just go blank after a few moments.
    3. Screen freezes - everything on screen would stop other than the arrow. Sometimes this would stick as an arrow, or sometimes as a beachball.
    4. A really strange phenomena when I opened a browser page and suddenly the left of the screen slowly faded to black, while the right went white. This went in increments as I watched with the image of the desktop distorted behind it, burning out.
To try to fix the problem I took the following steps:
    1. Reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update. This had no effect.
    2. Repaired permissions. (I didn't expect that to help anyway)
    3. Tried booting into a second user account on the computer (again, all the same problems were there - even worse on the other account in fact.
    4. Unplugged all peripherals (no effect)
    5. Removed the 1GB memory stick I had just installed - this appeared to fix the issue and I thought that maybe this was causing it. However, after a few minutes of normal operations, the problems all came back.
Just to clarify - the problems apparently started a week or so ago (this might coincide with the owner installing Mac OS X 10.5.7, but I can't be sure), at this point the computer only had its built-in 512MB RAM. With the additional 1GB RAM that I installed, the problems seemed to be worse. I know there is nothing wrong with the RAM as I had been using it in my iMac G5 up until this point.
I initially suspected the problem was the graphics drivers - as the problem occurred after upgrading to OS X 10.5.7, though I wondered if the problem could be the GPU itself?
However, I am now wondering if it's a RAM issue as additional RAM makes the problem worse - would having more in the computer change the way that the internal RAM is being accessed and mean that the end addresses of the built-in RAM are being accessed more quickly when additional memory is installed?
I was unable to find out if the machine would work alright if booting from the Leopard or original install Tiger DVD - as I didn't have time to check these.
Please advise me what I can do to diagnose the problem further, or what the owner can do to fix the problem.

"I will have to dig out my copy of Leopard or the original installer for my iMac G5 (w/iSight) as the owner doesn't know where her copies have gone! Maybe trying these will help find a solution"
You cannot use the System DVD/CDs from one Mac to another. The System discs are _+machine specific.+_ You may cause further damage if you use it.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
However, you can try using a purchased retailed Leopard DVD.

My Color setting is set to Millions which I believe is the default setting.
Now click on the Color button.
    Check Display Profile

Midway down, click on the Colorsync Utility link.
The next window should be Profile First Aid.
Read & follow the instructions/details of About Profile First Aid: & do the necessary to Verify & Repair.
If the culprit is the video card, you will need to take the computer to the nearest AASP or Apple Store for repairs.

  • ISight Problems With New iMac

I just purchased my first Apple computer, after 27 years of PC use. Its a 24" 2.8GHz and it has been great. The built-in camera was working great, until yesterday (week 3). My video blanked out (black screen) when I was using iChat. Then I opened Photo Booth and got a green screen - no video. After a while, some video came back, but they consisted of frozen frames with lots of video noise (lines across the video). I quit for the evening, and when I turned it on the next day, I had the same bad video (frozen frames with noise). A quick chat with the Apple Care folks soon had me reinstalling the OS. My concern is that I have no clue as to the cause of the problem - which means it will probably happen again. Has anyone else had this issue or know a probable cause?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, tkd_jo99
Once you have installed a known-good copy of Mac OS X, Reinstalling Mac OS X again will likely not be required unless you damage the system in some way. (It is generally a bad idea to move, modify, rename, or delete any item outside your User > Documents folder unless you are an experienced OS X user or are following directions from someone you trust.)
"Why" iSight gives problems can be different for different users. Here are the solutions that help most users who encounter the variety of green-screen problems avoid a service call. None are complicated, but, unless you like troubleshooting, the simplest way to find which one will work for you is to try each one in the list until you find the one that fixes your Mac. If none of the fixes in (0) through (4) below works for you, you may have a hardware problem that requires the services of an Apple Service Technician.
    (0) Restarting your Mac may get iSight working again.
    (1) Check your System Preferences as explained in this kbase article about Built-in iSight camera produces blue or green pictures.
    (2) If your System Preferences are set correctly, try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article.
Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
If you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting, see this Help article.
    (3) If resetting or the other suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (4) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs, disconnect EVERYTHING, including both power and peripherals, and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight. To date, no desktop iNtel Mac users have reported that disconnecting has helped them, but you could try disconnecting everything for several hours (no battery removal needed for your iMac) to see whether yours might be the first.
    (5) If none of these suggestions help, contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional service .
    (6) If your Troubleshooting from step (2) above shows that the problem is "application-specific" to iChat and you cannot find the solution yourself using Apple's iChat Support page, you should search or post about your particular problem in iChat AV 3 Forum. You will get best help fastest if you include all the information requested in FAQ 4 When do I Post a New iChat Topic ? in your initial post there.

    Hello!
I had the same problem with my iMac G5 20" (iSight) as described by Bob North Apr. 18, 2006 at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25:
"""" I repair Apple products, and recently I've seen strange and erratic display problems with the G5 flat-panel (iSight) 17" and 20"...and I am very curious about the origin. The picture will display what I will call "plaid pixles". Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display. The desktop, or whatever, can still be distinguished in the background, but it is overwashed by the plaid patterns -- which do change slightly, and also cover the full space of the screen. I've seen different scenarios, 3 in 2 weeks, where the symptom is exhibited with no particular failure pattern -- both before and after repair. I've replaced the main logic on one occasion, with no fix...but the 2nd try replaced both display panel and inverter. The display issue was fixed, but the system exhibited lockups only when it reached the destop. Another repair the same issue was seen after replacing the 20" main logic, where the symptom was not present previous. Personal opinion of the late 2005 IMAC flat-panels, in the hardware sense, is the likelihood of component manufacture issues, possibly the main logic boards or the panel displays themselves. Repair of this model, as opposed to the earlier, non-iSight flat-panel 17 and 20" models are extremely difficult -- access to main componenets is blocked by the display panel, which must be removed for each troubleshooting attempt. The internal hardware design is not oriented for repair ease...they are by far the most difficult to work on.
Any input regarding the display issues? Thanks.""""
I can't use the mouse or anything else, and after a while the fans start to go on max. This is the second time I encounter this problem within 30 days. What I have noticed is that the day before, the brightness of the screen started to "blink" slightly -- like if the screen tried to adjust itself.
But I haven't experienced what Bob North describes as the: "Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display".
I just restart with the power button and everything is working OK. I made an Extended Hardware test without any problems detected.
I have been looking for this issue with iMac G5 20" (iSight) and only found it at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25 :

Does it look anything like this?

My nearly 3 year old Titanium PowerBook G4 just did this one day, out of the blue. The problem went away after a few minutes, but I had already taken photos. Thanks to those photos, Apple gave the powerbook a new logic board.
(This PowerBook has had its logic board replaced twice, a new optical drive, and a cracked case edge replaced. AppleCare has more than paid for itself. Despite the occasional problems, I remain very happy with this machine. I'm sure I'd be much less happy if I had not bought AppleCare!)

  • Problems with iSight on Intel iMac

I've got a very big problem with my iSight, since 2 days. The green light turn on right at booting, just after I push the Power button. Any software (Photo Booth, QuickTime Pro, iMovie) recognize my camera. The iSight isn't mentioned in Apple System Profiler, I only have "High speed USB bus".
The iSight don't turn off while sleep.
I tried to reset PRAM and SMC twice, I even tried to move Apple_iSight.kext out of Extensions folder but my problem's not solved.
    Thanks for any help
    (And excuse my English)
