ISight with Magnetic mount under TV

Hi
I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard and have an external iSight camera attached to it.
I have decided to try putting it under the TV attached to the bottom but that means that the camera is upside down
is there any way in ichat in 10.6 or some other way to have the image flipped the right way up?
I have installed the Chax 3 beta and cant seem to do it in there unless I am missing something
You help would be great!!
Thanks

  • ISight with Magnets

My daughter just received an ISight camera which has been backorderd for six weeks - unpacked it - and watched her computer screen go blue. Apparently the camera is shipped with some unmarked magnets (which are only mentioned in the fine print of the manual - not labeled with any warnings) which seems to have wiped out her hard drive. What do we do now??

Are you completely sure that it is a magnet that has caused the symptoms you describe? I ask this because it takes a fairly strong magnet to wipe a hard drive. Every Apple laptop has a set of magnets in the latch mechenism, which is placed in quite close proximity to the hard drive, with no ill effects.
I imagine that the magnet you are describing is in the cinema display mount, which magnetically latches to the back of the newer aluminum cinema displays. Unless that magnet is much more powerful than it would need to be to hold up the iSight, I do not think it would be capable of wiping a hard drive unless you practically rubbed it on the surface of the drive, and even then it is questionable.
I recommend you thorougly investigate any other possible causes for the symptoms you describe before pursuing the matter as a magnet related issue.

iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

  • Using isight with two different OS

I have a G4 running OS10.2.8 and I want to connect to my son who has a iMac G5 running 10.4. I want to buy 2x iSight cams, one for each of us, and want to know if this set up will work.
Thanx a bunch for any help.

    Hello Lan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
In addition to Bill's good comments, I offer the following:
If you currently have iChat AV 2.0 for Jaguar, you will be able to chat with your son provided he meets HIS requirements and you have broadband internet service. You can be sure about which version of iChat you have by issuing the
    b iChat > About iChat
    menu command.
The link Bill cites shows Apple's System Requirements for iChat AV 3. This would require that you upgrade your 10.2.x system to 10.4.2
See this page for System Requirements for iChat AV 2.1. This would require that you upgrade your 10.2.x system to 10.3.9
Mac OS X 10.2.x originally came with iChat 1.0. iChat versions earlier than v2.0 will NOT do video. If you do not already own iChat AV 2 for Jaguar, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to get video capability.
At one time, Apple sold an iChat AV 2.0 upgrade for the original (non-AV) Jaguar iChat, but they stopped selling (or supporting) it in October, 2004.
My Mac OS Panther install disks include the Panther version of iChat AV 2.0. A free iChat AV 2.1 Updater is available from Apple to bring the Panther version of iChat AV to the most current
    b Panther
version, which offers one-to-one audio and video capability. (This is an Updater ONLY. It requires iChat AV already be installed from your Panther installer disks.)
The only way to buy iChat AV from Apple nowadays is to buy Tiger, Mac OS X 10.4.x, which includes iChat AV 3. iChat AV 3 is capable of multi-party text and audio conferencing for those who meet the System Requirements for iChat AV 3. Tiger's Mac OS X 10.4.2 Update upgrades you to the current iChat AV 3.0.1.
If you need more info on iChat AV, see the iChat AV Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) or the iChat AV Discussions.
You may also be interested in the the iSight Tips and FAQ. As implied in the How To Ensure Your iSight Is Functional FAQ, new users may want to consider buying iSight at a brick and mortar store.
Ask for a demonstration of the very same iSight you will take home. This will let you see how easy it is to connect, let you verify that it works, and give you an opportunity to ask any questions where you can
    b see
    the responses applied.
If you have a Mac notebook, heed the magnetic mount warning in the What Mounting Hardware is available for iSight? FAQ.
This response has grown longer that I thought, but once both you and your son are using the same Mac OS, you can eliminate all the other possibilities described above.

  • [SOLVED] How to automatically mount USB drives with custom mount point

    edit:
Original title was : 'Unable to mount USB disk via /etc/rc.local', but got changed since the /etc/rc.local problem isn't relevant for me anymore.
    Hello,
Since I am new to this forum, I'll start off with this :
Thanks to archlinux, its founder and all its contributors, cause this is the operating system (flavour) that annoys me the least.
    The root problem :
I want to automount USB storage devices to other places than /media/ and without the need for programs that depend on gnome and the like. As I tried some stuff with hald and such, I didn't really get to a nice and easy to configure solution. Any hints in that direction are always welcome.
For now, automount of known USB storages devices during boot, will do.
So the things I tried and didnt work :
    1.
Provide the disk info to /etc/fstab (via the disks UUID and 'auto' filesystem)
    Add 'mount /mountpoint' to /etc/rc.local
Result : the mount command in rc.local says '... specify filesystem'
However, after boot, running /etc/rc.local mounts the USB disks correctly.
    2.
Provide the disk info to /etc/fstab (via the disks UUID and the correct filesystem)
    Add 'mount /mountpoint' to /etc/rc.local
Result : pc doesn't get through boot process and gives me the 'ctrl-d to reboot or root passwd for maintenance'
    3.
Provide no disk info in /etc/fstab
Add the full mount line to /etc/rc.local (mount -t fs /dev/disks/by-uuid/MyUUID /MyMountpoint )
Result : don't remember the output of the mount execution, but well, it didn't mount
However, after boot, running /etc/rc.local mounts the USB disks correctly.
Is there something that isn't loaded at the time of rc.local execution that I need for mounting of USB devices ? Or why else is this failing ?
    Regards,
    BasiK

Thanks for the hint hunterthomson, but the pc I will be using it on, is an own-built HTPC/home file server, so there is no way I want to use a graphical file manager to get the usb disks mounted.
I tried to figure out a little about udev rules, and I got to do what I wanted to do, so thx for pointing me in that direction Mr.Elendig.
Btw, I am indeed also using auto-sleep/park disks, but this udev way works perfectly.
I added two rules files to /etc/udev/rules.d/ :
The first for a known usb disk (with its volume uuid), with a named mountpoint under my media dir /symbiosis/ :
    [basik@plox ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/80-usb-utopia.rules
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a",SYMLINK+="usb-%n", GROUP="storage", NAME="%k"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a",RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /symbiosis/utopia"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o rw,noauto,sync,dirsync,noexec,nodev,noatime /dev/%k /symbiosis/utopia", OPTIONS="last_rule"
    ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /symbiosis/utopia", OPTIONS="last_rule"
The second for unknown usb disks, to mount under the same dir. This is simply taken from the archwiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … .26_Tricks
Make sure these rules are executed after the ones for specific usb disks.
    [basik@plox ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/usb-disks.rules
    KERNEL=="sd[a-z]", NAME="%k", SYMLINK+="usb%m", GROUP="storage", OPTIONS="last_rule"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", SYMLINK+="usb%n", GROUP="storage", NAME="%k"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /symbiosis/usb%n"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o rw,noauto,sync,dirsync,noexec,nodev,noatime /dev/%k /symbiosis/usb%n", OPTIONS="last_rule"
    ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /symbiosis/usb%n"
    ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/rmdir /symbiosis/usb%n", OPTIONS="last_rule"
These may not be the nicest looking udev rules, but it works for what I wanted to do with it.

  • External USB drives will not mount under Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, two external USB2 drives that I have will not mount and cannot be viewed in the Finder.  The same occurs on a 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27 and a 2010 MacMini, all running OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.
Both drives are Samsung Story external USB drives (one is 1.5 GB and the other is 2 GB) and both have been formatted using Mac Disk Utility with a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, one using Snow Leopard and the other with Lion.
Both still mount correctly on a friends MacBook Pro that is still running Snow Leopard, and I had no problem with the same drives under Lion.  Interestingly both can also be connected to Time Capsule USB port and show up correctly.
Both drives mount correctly under Windows 7 on BootCamp partitions that I have on both the 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27. These BootCamp partitions have Paragon HFS+ installed so I can read Mac formated drives.
Both drives show up in Disk Utility, but when attempt to mount the drives I get the message "The disk could not be mounted.  Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting." I can run Repair in First Aid on the disk and get the message that the volume appears OK, but again have the same problem when I attempt to mount the disk.
I have also tried using Disk Utility 3,2, but still cannot mount the drives, though the program indicates there is no problem with the drives.
I have other portable USB including a Samsung portable USB2 drive, and two external USB3 drives, and I don't have problems with them.
There is clearly a problem with Mountain Lion with accessing (mounting) these Samsung Story USB drives, and the problem appears to be with Mountain Lion itself as the problem did not occur on the same Macs with Lion and does not occur with Bootcamp partitions on the machines.
I have a lot of time searching forums, but I have not found anyone with an identical problem.
I sure hope someone can help or that Apple come up with a fix for this issue which has only developed since the update to Mountain Lion.

  • Issue with AFP Mounts

I am migrating the user homes from a Linux server to a 10.5.8 Xserve.
The users are all setup in an LDAP environment.
The homes are currently on an NFS server running Linux. All users login to network accounts and are automatically connected to their NFS homes upon login.
I would like to start only migrating the files and thereby changed the users homes to something like this:
    /Network/Servers/<afs server>/Volumes/NetworkFolder/testuser
The user testuser has the same uid, user, pwd in the LDAP as on the new Xserve. The Xserve volume is finally mounted and I can login with my network home as testuser. However, the files are all read only. I cannot change anything in the new home files.
The access log on the AFS server says I'm logged in as Guest
I'm sure its a simple option I'm forgetting either in the LDAP config or on the AFS - I just seem to be stuck.
Any idea on how to get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
    - Thanks, Peter

I was looking for something like this. I have just bought a WD My Book World NAS drive. I connected it to my old router (G) and discovered it was too slow to wirelessly stream high bitrate music or movies. I then bought a Belkin N+ router which resolved this issue. However I have trouble with the mounts. When I wake my MacBook from sleep I can normally see the drive under Shares in Finder, but after some minutes it disappears. If I Go -> Network in Finder it turns up, but will not connect. The funny thing is I can be streaming music from the darn thing without interruption! The network shares on the desktop also turns on/off erratically. I can still access the folder contents from these even that the drive is not visible in Finder.
The NAS is set up for AFP on all shares which should be ok. I have tried both dynamic and fixed IP address on the NAS, but my Mac gets it dynamically. I'll try a fixed IP for this.
People are talking about automatic mount of network resources on start up. I came from Windblows and do not know all the fancy Unix commands and config files stuff. So how do you folks do this?
    Will be much appreciated, thanks!

I want to be able to mount devices (internal and external) as normal user. I do NOT want automount.
I also want the mount-tool to automatically create mount points on demand, naming them from device-label or device-mapping.

I do NOT want to install udevil and Devmon, which are external and redundant things, to do something I could do without. In the pre-systemd I managed to do it with the use of storage group and without udevil. I have been suggested to reactivate storage group, but I would like a more "systemd-philosophy" compatible way.

I'm near solving: replacing 'storage' with 'wheel' allow me to mount devices without asking permissions.
The only "problem" left is that it mount devices under /run/media/$device_UUID while I would like them to be mounted $deivce_LABEL or, if unavailable, volume size or device mapping.
Also: should devices be mounted under /run or under /media? If I remember correctly in my old archbox devices where mounted under /media. I know that /run is intended as a tmpfs to be available sooner than /var and the problem having lots of tmpfs around many places (like dev).

  • My time machine will not mount under 'devices'

I restored my mac air because of system corruptions.  I went to migrate my former build's user profile to the new system, but when I entered time machine it only showed me backups from the rebuilt system.  The only way I restored my files/settings was by navigating to my old backups in the finder (under devices in the finder) and copy/paste/replace into the new user profile.
Now I have 2 problems despite having searched the apple support docs and the forum.
First, I want to manage my old user time machine backups through my time machine app.  All I am able to access are the 4 backups made in the new system since the reinstallation.  That gives me a gap of several months back to when I purchased my air.  How can I access them while in my current user profile?
Second, my time capsule isn't mounting under devices.  I've got "show external discs" selected in finder prefs.  Obviously, it was showing earlier because that's how I got my files reloaded.
Which of course has me in a catch 22.  Even if I knew how to access my missing backups via time machine, I can't access the time capsule to set it up in the first place.....
    Advice?

First, I want to manage my old user time machine backups through my time machine app.
Manage meaning what.. an old backup cannot really be managed.. it is a backup.. you restore from it.. you don't manage it.
But if you merely mean to open it.. and TM is refusing to allow it to be opened.. well that is part and parcel of the Mavericks TM... !!
Pondini has instructions for opening TM backups from other Macs.. same rules apply here.
See Q14-17 here. 16 and 17 being the key ones.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Once you are out of a TM backup you cannot then use it for continuing backups.. You can try and inherit it but I think you are too late.. that should have been attempted immediately.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Second, my time capsule isn't mounting under devices.
This is typical Mavericks excellent networking.
Time Capsule should appear under shared not devices.. Once you mount the backup it will appear under devices but not until mounted.
    1. I strongly recommend full factory reset of the Time Capsule.
No files on the disk will be lost.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Redo the setup with all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
See apple documents which finally have fessed up to some of this.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Although apple says 27 characters max.. please keep it under 10 if you can and 20max. eg TCgenx as base station name.. replace x with actual gen.
TCwifi for wireless name. Do not accept the names the airport utility will give you.
    3. Mount the TC manually in Finder. Use Go, Connect to Server.
AFP://TCgenx.local (where you replace with your actual network name.. same as the name if you have followed the rules.. local is TC domain and helps).
When asked for disk password supply that and remember to save it in the keychain.
    4. Reset TM see A4 in Pondini troubleshooting.
    5. You will need to point TM to the newly named TC.. it will take some time for it to pickup the current TM backup but that should not be a problem once it starts backup.
One thing you should do before starting.. change ipv6 setting on the computer to link-local only.

  • ISight with USB to IEEE 1394 adapter

Has anyone tried using the iSight with a USB to Firewire adapter? Such as the ones sold on ebay? Will this work or fry the cam?

i used a firewire isight with my mac mini for online confrencing , but i had to use the firewire for a cctv system i had installed in my building.
being the owner of an electronics company i set out to make a firewire to usb converter
unfortunately my cctv system had a higher bandwith so had to use the firewire.
after about 6 hours design i got down to building the circuit. it was hugely expensive to build, cost me about $500 and looking back i guess it would have been easier to buy a firewire hub.
it consisted of a surface mount electronics board with an Ali usb 2.0 and a TI firewire chip attached through another controller.
this other controller is used for PCI ports in motherboards so essentially it was a pci usb card and a pci firewire card in a pc connected in a clever way.
along with other components the final unit was about the same size as the average mobile phone.
MAC recognises it as a usb hub and my isight plugs into the firewire port on it.
i have since used the same design to make an IDE to SATA controller and a usb to bluetooth device (if you want your usb keyboard to run on bluetooth)
certainly because these are one offs they will be far too expensive for most people, and i feel the demand is not high enough for us to produce these is large quantities.
so to answer your question yes you can convert usb to firewire and vice versa, and it is impossible to be done with just a cable, and it would probably be cheaper to buy a pc with more than 1 firewire port

Tell your wife to get her own Apple ID. If you do not want continuity/handoff to work with calls, on both devicesgo to Settings==>>FaceTime==>> Turn OFF iPhone cellular calls.

  • Event ID 6482: Search not provisioned: There is no project Portal_Content mounted under gatherer application guid

My search service shows this message
My search service shows this message:  'The search application 'Search Service Name' on server SERVERNAME is not provisioned. Confirm that the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Timer service and Central Administration service are running on the server'.
No changes can be made.  I am able to run search queries.
Every minute the Application Server Administration job tries and fails to provision the service and logs the event id 6482: Search not provisioned:  There is no project Portal_Content mounted under gatherer application <guid>
I've found a few posts online that have solved this by clearing the sharepoint cache, which I've done a number of times without success.  A few others re-created search which isn't a real good solution for me since we have a lot of customizations that
    would have to be redone.
Restoring from Central Admin backups is a possibility, but without knowing exactly what the problem is, it seems that this approach may cause further problems.
Thoughts anyone?  Here's the full event log message

  • Microsof VX 3000 or 6000 Webcam does not work with Lync 2013 under Windows 8.1

    Hi,
The problem is that i cannot use the Microsoft VX-3000 or VX-6000 with Lync 2013 under Windows 8.1.
If i go in settings under Video i can see the preview from the webcam just fine, so it works there no problem.
Wenn i try to enable my camera in a conference it does not work, i get an error: Your video cannot be started.
Now, there are no Windows 8.1 drivers for the Webcam so i installed the latest Windows 7 drivers. Because of that this webcam does not work with apps, that is fine i understand the driver problem and the way the new apps work.
But this Webcam works with skype under Windows 8.1 and it works with Lync 2010 client.
The same Webcam works just fine with Lync 2013 under Windows 7.
Is there anything i could do so that i get this Webcam to work with Lync 2013 desktop client under Windows 8.1?
    Thanks

    Hi,
According to your description, it may be caused by driver.
You can try to install the latest version of Display Driver to fix the display issue.
Since there is no driver for Windows 8.1, I suggest you wait for updating.
You can also post a case on Windows 8 forum, thank you for your understanding:

  • Why iPad mini retina smart unlock/lock function not working when I using 3rd party cover with magnetic

I recently bought a leather case from store with smArt unlock/lock function with magnetic. I try to use it on my iPad mini retina when I try to close and open it doesn't work. I already on my smart unlock function inside setting. May I know where is the magnetic area  of iPad mini retina ?

The "Lock/Unlock" feature is enabled by installing a compatible Smart Cover/Case (or third-party equivalent) with an embedded magnet in the correct position in the cover. Are you using a real Apple product? If not, the cover/case you are using may not have the magnet in the right place or may not even have one at all.
If you ARE using a real Apple Smart Cover/Case and you have an Apple Store nearby, have them check both the case and cover you are using. You may have a bad magnectic switch on the iPad or a faulty cover/case.
I also remember reading here of a Smart Case/Cover which had the magnet installed upside-down and was repelling rather than attracting. You might want to take the cover off and flip it to verify this...you'll have to slide the cover around in different positions on the right-hand bezel on the iPad to see if you can activate the magnet.
