  • Pros and cons of installing a local J2EE server

    Hi,
We are about to start developing portal applications with Web Dynpro and will use NWDI (DTR/CBS/CMS). I would like to know what SAP recommends for team development, each developer installs a local J2EE server or they all deploy and test on a central server?
From my past experiences, using only one central server can cause problems with debugging, deployment and collisions of a DC tested simultanously by two developers. Running a local server can solve these problems but this could be costly; first because PCs often don't have enough CPU/RAM to run it, and second to support all these complex installations.
I have read Benny's two blogs and some SAP documentation but it is still not clear to me which option is best. If you have lived good or bad experiences with one or the other please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Martin

I would strongly suggest you avoid having a single runtime environment for multiple developers.  The nature of Java development makes working in a runtime environment such as this very difficult.  It's far too easy to have multiple developers working on the same component making changes that result in different versions of the same component getting deployed to the same runtime environment.  Unless communication is very good, you're developers will end up clobbering each others changes.  Obviously not good, since the developers will spend time trying to debug problems which really don't exist!
At the other end of the spectrum, each developer can have their own Java stack running locally on their desktop PC.  This was the solution that we first tested out, but due to the amount of virus scanning and the overall 'weight' of the other software tools on our desktop PC's, this didn't work too well - performance wasn't all that good.  It was also too easy for the developer to clobber their own environment by accidentally removing files, or by making changes to the configuration that would render their engine unusable.
What we opted for was something in the middle: a dedicated multi-cpu system with lots of RAM that runs multiple J2EE instances, each of which is assigned to a single developer.  What you get from this sort of configuration is this: only a single operating system to patch when you are required to do upgrades; a controlled environment where the developer doesn't have file system access to the system (which they don't need anyways); if you're lucky, basis support to perform installation and patching duties.
We've been using this environment for about a year now, and it works well.  I have full access to the J2EE container via the Visual Admin, and since the dev instances are configured as single server debuggable instances, I can restart the server via the Dev Studio with just two clicks.
Hope that gives you an idea of another possible config.

  • Problem of start up J2EE server

Recently, I installed the J2SE1.5.0. Unfortunately, I cannot start my J2EE server, and get an error message as following:
    Starting Domain domain1, please wait.
    Log redirected to C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\logs\server.log.
    Provider org.apache.crimson.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl not found
Press any key to continue . . .
Is there anyone can help me? Than you.

This is a known issue with J2EE 1.4 Application Server and J2SE 1.5 - this is corresponding bug report:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4967167.html
Fix will become available in upcoming Application Server 8 PE release. In the meantime, you should reinstall J2EE 1.4 on this system in such a way that it uses J2SE 1.4.2 as its J2SE installation.

  • Starting the J2EE server

    Hi:
I am new to J2EE and I followed the instruction on the J2EE Tutorial setting up the J2EE SDK. When I tried to start the J2EE server by typing in "C:\j2ee -verbose", the server can't seem to start... After it gets to "Starting JMS service..." , it jumps back to the command prompt "C:\>"
If I then try to do a "j2ee -stop", I get an error "javax.naming.CommunicationException: Can't find SerialContextProvider" (which, I think, indicates the server never got started)
I am using Windows 2000 and I am pretty sure I have the environment variables set properly. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanx!
The following is the trace of me doing "j2ee -verbose"

I have read some posts and get the answer
change the pc language to English
    and reinstall j2ee
    all should be ok!
I get message "J2EE server startup complete" now.
    luck!

  • Having trouble starting the J2EE Server... for hours and hours...

    Hi:
I am having problem starting the J2EE Server.
I have looked through this page where lots of people had similar problem:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=136&thread=468079
but the solutions provided there could not solve my problem...
My problem, specifically, is that when I try to start the sever, I get:
    com.sun.enterprise.admin.servermgmt.DomainException: ...
CLI156 Could not start the domain domain1.
I am using Windows XP Professional on IBM ThinkPad X30.
Does anyone have some idea how to solve the problem?
    Thanx!

    bsankararao,
Thanks for the quick response. I am currently using the latest IE6.0 XPXP2 version and yes I doe have a successful start of the domain1 process. Here is the startup log for verification:

I'm not sure the IOException is the real issue. It looks like there may be some other process using one of the ports the SDK is attempting to bind to. Did you try rebooting your machine and restarting the SDK? If there is another process using a port the SDK requires you may need to change the ports used by the SDK. You can find most of the port settings in the config directory in one of the properties files, depending which port you would like to change. Looks like the orb port is you issue so reboot or modify orb.properties.

  • How to install/start local J2EE engine in Netweaver Developer Studido

    Hello,
I just installed NDS 2.0.11 and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to actually test my code.
Went thru tutorial for creating Calculator J2EE sample. When I get to step that describes how to deploy the EAR I get error below. I've gone into Windows|Preferences|SAP J2EE Enginee section thinking I could configure/start engine from there but I can't figure out what to do.
I've searched these forums and the NDS help files with no luck.
I didn't get any prompts during install asking me whether or not I wanted to install a local J2EE engine.
Has anyone run into this and do they know the answer. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    RK,
Thanks for the link. It did help a little. I found some of the errors on that page and it helped me get past them.
The last issue I had run into was issue 1-13. So I created a new user on my laptop and gave it admin rights.
The install got a little further but now it's stuck again. Here are the messages from the install log:

  • How can I start local J2EE Engine in debug mode automatically?

    Hello,
I thought there was a way to setup the local J2EE engine to automatically start in debug mode.
Right now, I have to start the engine, go into Studio and right-click on engine and choose "Enable debugging of process". This means that I have to wait for the engine to restart.
What I'm looking for is a system setting where I can tell it to automatically start in debug mode.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    David.

    Ivaylo,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
Could you please elaborate on your instructions? I have started the Config Tool. Now I see the following tree structure:
    + cluster-data
       secure store
       UME LDAP data
I expand the cluster-data node and get this:
      - cluster-data
        +Global dispatcher configuration
        +Global server configuration
        +instance_ID12345
Assumed that I should expand the instance node. When I do I get this:
        + dispatcher_ID1234500
        + server_ID123450
Again, I assumed I should expand the server node. This is where I get lost. I have no idea where to go next to set the debug configuration.
    Can you please help?
    Thanks
    David.

    hi all,
i'm not sure whether this is relevant forum or not, if not, plz let me know where i can move this topic
i'm deploying a war file using a jetty server. while starting of the server i get the following error
    WARN!! No thread for com.sterlingcommerce.woodstock.services.pshttp.jetty.ConduitStreamListener$1@d7a281
this is not a jetty code, but i create a runnable object and calls
public void run(Object job) throws InterruptedException //method of
    ThreadPool class of jetty(package org.mortbay.util)
there it tries to do the following:
    try
    PoolThread thread=(PoolThread)_pool.get(getMaxIdleTimeMs());
    if(thread!=null)
    thread.run(this,job);
    else
Code.warning("No thread for "+job); //here the issue is coming
    stopJob(null,job);
this is coming becuause, PoolThread object is null, i went through the code, where they have their logic of handling the threads, but not able to see where it can go wrong..

  • Starting local J2EE engine from SAP MMC

I am trying to start my local J2EE engine using SAP MMC.  However, when I select the start option, the DB no longer starts automatically.  I can manually start the DB, select start, and the engine will start.   Previously, I could select start and everything would just come up.
Can anyone tell me where the disconnect is occuring?

    Hi,
If you have an add-in installation then you can try to stop the java system by stopping the java dispacther by stopping the j2ee process. You can just try restarting the java system using SMICM.You can check whether the data base services are set to auto start or need a manual start.
    Reward points if helpfull.

    Hi Mauro,
normally when you apply a new SAP Kernel a frfclib.sar file is delivered. This frfclib file need to be copied to the J2EE directory /os_libs and need to be extracted there. This frfclib version must always match to the SAP Kernel version.

  • Can't start local J2EE Engine

In our company we have a large group of developers who all have Netweaver Developer Studio installed on their machines to do java development.  They also have the local engine installed to deploy and test their code.
    We're on version 7.0 (aka 2004s) SP9.
One of our developers has been working fine, then went to a week of training, has come back and now his engine no longer starts up locally - same computer that worked before.
Server1 turns green, but Server0 stays yellow.  The error we see in the std_server0.out is as follows:
Failed to reserve 1610612736 (0x60000000) bytes before loading DLLs (error 8).
We have tried all of the following with no success:
    - Restarting his computer
    - Lowering the Max heap size using the ConfigTool (it was originally at 768, which has always worked in the past, but we took it to 512 just to see)
    - Using the SAP Address Space Viewer, we tried the Rebase DLLs
Any other suggestions of things to try?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

    Hello Jenifer,
Markus Dohr set you on the right track. This issue is caused by memory fragmentation in result of the installation of hot fix from Microsoft. Unfavorable basis addresses of Windows system DLLs or DB Client DLLs fragment the address space of the JLaunch process. The Java VM fails to initialize because it cannot allocate enough contiguous address space for the configured amount of Java heap.
Before trying the solution try to prelod the DLLs as Markus suggested (Note 853696)
    Solution
    1.  Use the ConfigTool to reduce the maximum heap size of the J2EE Engine node to allow the J2EE Engine to start.
    2.  Follow the procedure in SAP Note 129813 to analyze the JLaunch.exe process, to identify the offending DLL and to rebase it. From 640 SP14 on the DLL preload function can be used instead of rebasing, please read note 853696.
    3.  If the DLL cannot be rebased (due to Windows File Protection), please refer to note 664269 – Rebasing DLLs under WFP or create an OSS/CSN message for the BC-OP-NT component.
Please also see note 664607 - Hot Fixes or patch sets with fragmenting DLLs.
NB: Do not delete server node 0!!! You could disable it, so it doesn’t start, but do not delete it. If you want to run with only one node, delete server node 1.

Expecting any clue to resolve this issue.
    Reg/Venkat

    Hi,
This error might be due to the memory heap size. To resolve this:
    Stop ur server.
    1)Go to My Computer>properties>Advanced.
    2)In the performance tab>settings>performance options-->Advanced -->change
3)Change the heap size of the memory to the local drives.
Initial size (1524) and Max size(3048).
    <u><b>Alternate Solution</b></u>
Go to services.msc and start all the oracle instances. (Manual Start)
Restart the cluster. The server will start to run.
    Hope it helps,
    Regards,
    Nagarajan.
