Issue with AFP Mounts
I am migrating the user homes from a Linux server to a 10.5.8 Xserve.
The users are all setup in an LDAP environment.
The homes are currently on an NFS server running Linux. All users login to network accounts and are automatically connected to their NFS homes upon login.
I would like to start only migrating the files and thereby changed the users homes to something like this:
/Network/Servers/<afs server>/Volumes/NetworkFolder/testuser
The user testuser has the same uid, user, pwd in the LDAP as on the new Xserve. The Xserve volume is finally mounted and I can login with my network home as testuser. However, the files are all read only. I cannot change anything in the new home files.
The access log on the AFS server says I'm logged in as Guest
I'm sure its a simple option I'm forgetting either in the LDAP config or on the AFS - I just seem to be stuck.
Any idea on how to get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
- Thanks, Peter
I was looking for something like this. I have just bought a WD My Book World NAS drive. I connected it to my old router (G) and discovered it was too slow to wirelessly stream high bitrate music or movies. I then bought a Belkin N+ router which resolved this issue. However I have trouble with the mounts. When I wake my MacBook from sleep I can normally see the drive under Shares in Finder, but after some minutes it disappears. If I Go -> Network in Finder it turns up, but will not connect. The funny thing is I can be streaming music from the darn thing without interruption! The network shares on the desktop also turns on/off erratically. I can still access the folder contents from these even that the drive is not visible in Finder.
The NAS is set up for AFP on all shares which should be ok. I have tried both dynamic and fixed IP address on the NAS, but my Mac gets it dynamically. I'll try a fixed IP for this.
People are talking about automatic mount of network resources on start up. I came from Windblows and do not know all the fancy Unix commands and config files stuff. So how do you folks do this?
Will be much appreciated, thanks!

Issue with AFP (Buffalo Linkstation?) mounts on 10.5.7
I have a Buffalo LinkStation Pro which I use to share folders with on my local network. I have it set up so that AFP is used and user permissions are in use. With 10.5.6 I didn't have any problems.
However, after the upgrade to 10.5.7 on one of the shares a single directory won't show up in Finder (all other directories on the specific share show up fine). Looking at the volume contents in terminal shows the directory. Likewise, Lightroom can access it with content that was imported earlier. Lightroom can't access the directory when trying to import new content.
Disconnecting from the NAS and reconnecting with SMB instead of AFP shows the folder fine.
The problem and solution works on both of my Macs.
Is this an issue with the 10.5.7 update? The firmware in the NAS hasn't been upgraded and no other changes have taken place.I was looking for something like this. Issue with AFP server dropping connections on 10.8.5 server 2.2.2
We are having issues with users getting dropped from their AFP server shares.
These issues did not start happening until we upgraded to 10.8.5 and server 2.2.2
the first symptoms were an occasional user would lose his / her active connection while copying files. They were unable to disconnect from the network shares without physically disconnecting the LAN or disabling the network on their system. Once the connection was removed they could reconnect to the network and establish their AFP shares again.
However this his escalated to every user losing connections to their AFP shares at the same time.
The server has no AFP error in the AFP error log however we are getting diskutil crash reports at around the same time. (See Below)
The server has
smalltree 1x6 8254 with latest drivers supporting a LACP bonded 6 pair connecting to an edgecore (LACP configured)switch.
small tree 10Gb card directly connected to an edit station.
onboard ethernet connected to switch in support of DHCP & DNS. (previous version of server would not see the bonded pair)
Two Accusys A12S2's
(we did not have this dropping connection issue before the upgrade to server 2.2.2 and OSX 10.8.5)
Users connected to any network connection to the server appear to be affected when the AFP shares are disconnected. Direcet connect, onboard ethernet port and Bonded pair connections)
diskutil verifies all shared drives appear to be ok. (All Green)

Permissions issue with NFS mounted MyCloud
FIrst off let me say I think this is a LInux issue and not a WDMyCloud issue, but I'm not sure, so here goes... I can rsync my stuff off the Linux systems on my LAN to back them up into a WDMyCloud share, no problem. But then I can't get at some stuff with limited file permissions, when I mount the WDMyCloud via NFS. Here's the problem... Let's s say my directory tree on the WDMyCloud looks like "/shares/Stuff/L1/L2/L3" where the permissions on "L3" look like this: drwx------+ 3 fred share 4096 Jul 1 01:03 L3 It's readable/writeable only by "fred". I want to preserve the permissions and ownerships on everything, so if I have to do a restore and "rsync" it back onto another machine they'll go back the way they were when I backed them up. I can see the contents of "L3" if I "ssh" into the MyCloud, *but* I *cannot* see the contents of "L3" if I try to look at it via the NFS mount - I get ls: L3: permission denied. If I change the permissions on it, e.g.drwxrwxrwx+ 3 fred share 4096 Jul 1 01:03 L3then I can see the contents of "L3" just fine. So it's just the fact that via the NFS mount the MyCloud NFS server (Or something?) won't give me access to it unless the permissions are open, even logged in as "root" on the machine where the MyCloud is NFS mounted. I tried creating "fred" as a user on the MyCloud *and* made sure the numerical UID and GIDs were the same on the Linux machine and the MyCloud - No dice. I haven't tried everything in the world yet (I haven't tried rebooting the MyCloud to see if some server hasn't picked up the changes to "/etc/passwd" or whatever ; there's something called "idmapd" that I guess I should look into... Etc.) But I thought maybe somebody here might have run into this or have a bright idea?
I had some problems, and I modified the /etc/exports file to meet a little more my needs This is the content of it: -------/nfs/jffs *(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)/nfs *(rw,all_squash,sync,no_subtree_check,insecure,crossmnt,anonuid=999,anongid=1000)-------- The first line/share allows to change the permissisions and uid below them when you monted on your machineThe second one I maped the anonuid to the uid my user has on the wd (999) so when I mount a share on the machine everything is write with that used id If you modifes the /etc/exports file remeber to run after you edited the command "exportfs -a" to refresh the changes Hope this help with your problem

Installation issue with a mounted cluster resource
Hello
given: SC 3.1 9/04 on Solaris 9 sparc
we run RSA Authentication Manager 6.0 on a 2 node cluster.
This is installed into /opt/ace - which is a storage cluster resource.
It's the fact that if I install the ACE into /opt/ace, then I take the storage cluster offline, I still can see all of the underlying ACE directories.
Under normal circumstances the directory should be empty, but it is not.
I don't know why.
ok, step by step
the directory is empty, and the resource is Online -

Issues with ldap_add via LDAP Interface on WS 2008 R2 from WGM for mounts
Important Setup Information:
Active Directory domain on Windows Server 2008 R2
Extended AD Schema to include apple-* attributes
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 bound to Active Directory
Connected to Active Directory Forest in Workgroup Manager with Domain Admin / Schema Admin credentials.
The Issue:
When attempting to configure a Home path using an SMB URL using the following attributes:
Mac OS X Server/Share Point URL:
smb://gio-storage-01.giodivine.com/Users
Path to Home Folder:
user 01
Full Path:
/Network/Servers/gio-storage-01.giodivine.com/Users/user01
I receive the following error:
*Not authorized.*
This action failed because you are not authorized to perform the operation.
I checked the console, and found the following (completely useless) error:
Got unexpected error of type eDSPermissionError (-14120) on line 574 of /SourceCache/WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager -361.2.1/Plugins/UserAccounts/UserVolumesPluginView.mm
I enabled diagnostic logging of the LDAP Interface on the Active Directory server and acquired the following error attributed to the "permissions" issue that Workgroup Manager emits:
Internal event: Function ldap_add entered
Internal Event: The LDAP server returned an error.
Additional Data
Error value:
00000057: LdapErr: DSID-0C090C30, comment: Error in attribute conversion operation, data 0, v1db0
So; it would appear that there is some issue with the Active Directory schema extensions, or that the UserVolumesPluginView module is not referencing the schema correctly. My expectation would be that an apple-mount object be created to describe the mount point in /Network/Servers and that the unixHomeDirectory attribute on the User object would be set to the newly created map point.
The latter occurs, i.e. the unixHomeDirectory attribute is set to:
/Network/Servers/gio-storage-01.giodivine.com/Users/user01
The map point is never created in Active Directory, however. It did create a new container in AD at the root, i.e. cn=Mac OS X,dc=giodivine,dc=com, but nothing is ever created there.
I have attempted to completely remove all of the extended schema changes, re-compare an OD master against the AD PDC, recreate the schema changes LDF, and re-apply the changes to no avail.
Any information as to how I can find out exactly what call to ldap_add is being made so that I can somehow track down the faulty schema extension attribute would be helpful. Are there ways to enable verbose diagnostic logging of Workgroup Manager and it's accompanying modules?
Thanks in advance!

<Edited by Host>Hi Scot,
Sometimes a third party backup application will change the default VSS provider adding VSS writers which causes Windows Server Backup using an incorrect component in doing backup, that's why I suggest to delete it for a test. Anyway you can reinstall it
after testing.
And as you said a high-load CPU could also be the cause of the issue so you may need to first rule hardware effective out.
If issue still exists, please try the steps below as well:
1. Please check DCOM Server Process Launcher service is started.
2. If not, try to change RPC service to run as SYSTEM account. To do this please modify the following key:
Note: Backup the key before edit incase it cause any issue.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs\
Find "ObjectName" and change the value to LocalSystem.
Reboot to see if DCOM back to work and if Windows Server Backup starts working. If not, please provide the result if there is any new error occurs.
If DCOM still not work, please compare the content of the following key with a working server:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
Edit if there is any difference and make sure you created a backup of the key before editing.
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected] -
AFP issues with 10.4.6
Hi,
I have network of 3 Macs running 10.4.6. Two are wired and the other is my laptop and it is wireless. When I try to connect with AFP to any maching (wired to wired, wired to wireless, or wireless to wired) I get the following error:
"Connection Failure
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
I get the same message when I try to connect by IP address or name.
I have IPv6 and Appletalk turned off on all machines. All machines also have static IPs and DNS info entered manually. If I scan each machine with NMAP port 548 is open and I can telnet to it. I also can see the server when I browse the network for AFP servers.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Andy
Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hmm thinking twice about it, sounds like MacOS-BSD idiosyncrasy...
Every time we update MacOS X the I/O and network catalog is being reset, returning most of the settings to default values (at least when dealing with default (not customized) installations)...
Your issue regarding TCP sendspace sounds like a good feedback to Apple.
I'll fire an email to the developers...
btw: mark your question as answered, it's the most interesting AFP issue I've read so far

Having issues with Mounting older drive/time machine
Hey folks, I'm having issues with mounting a ex hard drive. It works, but there is a passcode for it, due to being my time machine drive, I dont remember the password, is there anything I can do to reset it? if not how do I wipe it clean? I went into disk disk Utilities and everythink looks fine.. Check out the pics Iput up
I dont remember the password, is there anything I can do to reset it?
No.
if not how do I wipe it clean?
If you can connect the drive to a computer running Windows or a version of OS X older than 10.7, erase the drive that way. Otherwise see the link below.

Issue with session management with portal 701 AFP
Hi portal experts,
We are facing an issue with one of our portal 7 ehp1 running the AJAX framework pages.
When logging off, the DSM popup is shown and it disappears. However, the backend sessions are kept alive when we look in transaction SM12, which indicates that the backend session has not been closed (proven in transaction SM04)
The same issue arises when closing a popup window. In this case, no DSM popup is shown and the sessions are maintained as well.
Popup blockers are disabled
Portal url and backend url are in the trusted sites collection
Does this have something to do with the AJAX framework?
Does anyone have any pointers for us?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
LukHi Tom,
I already came across this note earlier. Currently I'm unable (not allowed) to install the httpwatch utility.
To add to the complexity, web dispatchers are used to access the portal and used between the portal and the backend systems. If I understood correctly, we need to have the ABAP Security Sessions Enabled setting turned on in this sort of landscape. Is this correct?
If it is not required, couldn't we just turn off this setting?
Thanks in advance!

InDesign CS4 (ver.6) can not package all images from afp mounted server
I'm experiencing an issue on multiple Intel Mac's running OS 10.6.8 when packaging files some of the server based art does not collect.
In some folers some of the art collects and in the same folder some other files don't.
The missing files are generally .jpg or .eps and it's a combination of these files that are not being collected.
Images are sometimes shared between users but the missing images do not appear to be open elsewhere.
The docuemtns are stored across several AFP mounted server hosted on a Windows 2004 Server running ExtremeZIP to allow AFP cpnnection.
Moving the files to different volumes on the server does not appear to resolve this issue.
Any thoughts or questions? Apologies if this isn't clear.I just had this happen again with a new InDeslgin CS4 file, I took the missing images and relinked them to a new folder I just created on my desktop and it still does nt collect these files. So not only the server, but now my desktop, and it's not just my computer, I can reproduce on other macs in 10.6.8
I convertd the files from .EPS (from Photoshop: they're flattned) to .PDF (from Apple Preview) and relinked them, and I was not able to package either.
I did find the solution:
I checked off "Include Fonts and Links Hidden and Non-Printing Content"
even though these items were on visible layers and not on the pasteboard they were excluded before I checked it off.
Thanks for your help! -
Searches within InDesign Have Stopped Working on AFP Mounted Volumes On OS X 10.9
I have run into a new problem since using InDesign CC on a Mac running Mavericks, the search function has ceased working on AFP mounted volumes. For example, when placing an image, if I navigate to a pot of images on my server and then tap in part of the file name within the search field there is nothing found, even though the file name I am searching for is there.
I have spoken to Adobe technical support who said "well I do apologize for your inconvenience however adobe does not support if the file is on the network. We would be happy to help you if there is any issue with Search if the files are located locally". Slightly frustrating answer!
This issue looks to be related to the Mavericks operating system as I have Macs running OS X 10.8 which are fine, it is only the OS X 10.9 Macs that have this problem. Is anyone else having these issues?I have no problem on two Macs running Mac OS X 10.9.2 with InDesign CC 9.2.
Have you started by restoring your preferences. Here's how:
Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences
If you use the delete folder method, remember that in OS X 10.9, the <Home> library his hidden. In the Finder, hold down the Option key, and choose Go > Library to make it visible. -
Big issues with Leopard and writing to NAS units or Windows servers
Quick run down of the issues
1st client has a number of G5's all running 10.5.2
NAS units running embedded Windows SBS 2003 or Windows Storage .
All shares have worked fine before the macs were upgraded to Leopard.
Now the macs can see the shares, mount and write to the folders. But immediately afterwards all inherited permissions are stripped from the folders/files and only the owner of the file/folder can access them. All other mac users have no access. It seems that Leopard is ignoring the inherited permissions of the share and just applying its own.
2nd Client
Number of imacs running 10.5.2. Can see the mac shares on the server running Windows SBS 2003 fine. The minute any files are copied you get the progress of the items being copied, seems to appear on the server and then just hangs.
In most circumstances the copying crashes the whole server.
Have tried binding the imacs to AD, but no joy. SMB sharing (with Appletalk turned off) dosent help either.
Somewhere there seems to be some gremlins with AFP and windows shares
Anyone have similar issues or bright ideas ?Alright I'm running into the same issue with my iMac 10.5.2 connecting to windows server 2003 r2. I'm about to go nuts, I can log on to the server, open files manipulate them and sometimes I'm able to save that file back to server but I'm unable to transfer almost anything new to the server, (I can create new folders though). When you try to transfer something to the server I get "progress of the items being copied, seems to appear on the server"... then it hangs, a corrupt file is left on the server. If you try and open that file I get an error message on my mac, "OS X is currently using this file" on a pc it will say the file is corrupt. I'm forced to carry my psd files on a flash drive and walk to coworkers machines to upload it to the server... (haven't had time to set up parallels). I'm the only mac in the office and I'm seeing why I've been so spoiled at past jobs where its 100% macs.

Network accounts on OS X 10.6.8 experience bookmark issues with Firefox 9
We run OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) with network accounts, home directories being mounted by AFP from a Snow Leopard server with attached XServe RAID.
Since 9.0.1 (possibly earlier) bookmark management has become impossible. Added bookmarks sometimes don't survive after logout/login. Delete bookmarks sometimes reappear.
A more elegant demonstration of the problem involves creating a new account. On the first run of Firefox, attempting to add a bookmark gives you an empty "Add Boomark" dialogue. "Show All Bookmarks" reveals that you have three bookmarks called "(no title)" that you can't edit or delete. It is impossible to add additional bookmarks.
I've tried delete and recreating profiles, and checking the places.sqlite file for corruption with no joy. This looks like a fundamental issue with the way Firefox deals with bookmarks.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue? I doubt if anyone is crazy enough to have a setup like ours, but any help would be appreciated. That still sounds as there are access problems to the places.sqlite database file, so you need to check that out another time.

Authenticated AFP Mount at Login
Hi All,
I posted this question on Apple's UNIX Discussion, Authenticated AFP Mount at Login, but I wanted to run it by the specialists here. Hopefully everything I'm going to tell you is in the other thread but I would like to make this post self-contained so that you don't have to read the other post if you don't wish to.
I have client computers and an AFP server, all of which run 10.4.7. The AFP server is running the server version of OS X with an unlimited license and the clients are running the client version of OS X, all completely up-to-date. I haven't used Open DIrectory. They are all domain joined machines in our Active Directory domain and as such, they are configured as Kerberos clients of the Active Directory domain. All users except the administrator are users of this domain and they have Windoze home directories that are on an SMB share. I would also like them to have shared AFP Mac home directories.
I like the way that OS X handles the Windoze home directories, putting them in the Dock. If I add a listing in AD for Mac home directories, will OS X still do the same thing with the users' Windoze home directories? I assumed that it wouldn't and so for my domain users, I checked the option to have local home directories created. Then I made /Users a symlink to the mount point of the AFP share. The problem is that I want the mount to be an authenticated mount, using Kerberos for authentication.
I've tried mounting the share with a LaunchAgent and with a LoginHook. I don't remember whether I got an authenticated mount with the LaunchAgent but I am consistently able to get an authenticated mount with the LoginHook. However, neither of these are executed early enough in the login process. My experience has been that access to home directories is needed seconds before the LoginHook is run. In fact, I had a new home directory created for a user and then the AFP share was mounted on the directory containing the new home directory.
The only way I could find to have the share available when home directories are first accessed is to automount it. However, I've been unable to make the automounter authenticate. I'm wondering if the Kerberos ticket is even available at the time the home directory is first accessed. Whatever the reason, every attempt to force authentication has simply resulted in a failure of the mount. Of course I was trying to force the issue on the server. If I could configure the client to insist on authentication, maybe the login process would wait until the Kerberos ticket is acquired. Does anyone know how to so configure the client?
My current solution is a combination of the two methods above. It works surprising well but it's a kludge and I don't trust it to be stable. What I do is to configure the automount and /Users is a symlink to a mount point in /Network/Servers. Then, when the LoginHook runs, not only does it mount the same share (authenticated) in /Volumes, it deletes the /Users symlink and creates a new one that points to the authenticated mount point of the share in /Volumes. Naturally, processes that run early in the login obtain open file descriptors to user files in the unauthenticated mount. Mdimporter is one such process but I assume that such file descriptors are soon closed due to lack of permissions to read and write. After that, I've seen no other problems. When the user logs out, the symlink is restored to point into /Network/Servers and the authenticated share is dismounted.
My question is whether there are better alternatives to this kludge. I'm loathe to change Active Directory because it would mean also changing our account creation scripts and applications. However, that is possible if that's the only way to do what I want reliably. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

<SilverStr> media ethics is an oxymoron, much
like Jumbo Shrimp and Microsoft Works.
<MonkAway> not to mention NT SecurityActually, there's a much simpler way to use your Mac OS X Server to host home directories for your AD users.
First of all, I would recommend configuring your Mac OS X system as an Open Directory Master then use Directory Access to bind it to Active Directory. Configure the server's authentication search path (policy) starting with /NetInfo/root (closest), then /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 (Open Directory), then /Active Directory/All Domains.
Next, use Workgroup Manager to define a share point and create a dynamic mount for it (to /Network/Servers/servername/...path.../share) using the Network Mount tab in Workgroup Manager/Sharing. Define the permissions of this home directory share point such that all users can read only. I recommend root:staff, 755. Ensure that AFP Guest Access is enabled for the share and that AFP Guest Access is turned on for the AFP process in Server Admin. (This share point will be mounted dynamically and will be authenticated when doing so. You shouldn't have to allow guest access but it's often required because the dynamic automounter wants to create a mount point for the home directory share upon startup, where it acts as a static automount.)
Be absolutely certain that your server has a valid DNS hostname so that the /Network/Servers/servername field remains the same. Plus, you'll need that for Kerberos anyway.
Third, you'll need to figure out how to store the dsAttrTypeStandard:NFSHomeDirectory (home) and dsAttrTypeStandard:HomeDirectory (home_loc) attributes in user accounts in Active Directory. You can use Apple's schema (published in the User Management Admin Guide for Mac OS X 10.4) or you can repurpose existing unused attributes in user accounts already in AD. If you're repurposing, you'll need to use the AdsiEdit.msc snap-in to do so, and each attribute should have a single value of UTF-8 (Unicode) string.
If you're repurposing: On your server, you'll need to "tell" the systems about the repurposed attributes by manually editing the ActiveDirectory.plist file. In Property List Editor, open the file (change its permissions so that you can write first), expand the AD Attribute Mappings Table, then expand the dsRecTypeStandard:Users array. Look for items whose values are dsAttrTypeStandard:NFSHomeDirectory and dsAttrTypeStandard:HomeDirectory and change their names to the appropriate numeric ID of the AD attribute that you're using to store the respective information.
Either way, when populating the attributes for NFSHomeDirectory and HomeDirectory for each user account, use the following syntax:
NFSHomeDirectory is the path to the home from the client's point of view: /Network/Servers/homeserver.somewhere.com/Volumes/ServerHD2/Homes, for example.
HomeDirectory contains the AFP URL and path to the user's home like: <homedir><url>afp://homeserver.somewhere.com/Homes</url><path>joey</path></homedir>
Fourth, on your home directory server, you'll want to make sure that it's joined to the same Kerberos realm as the Active Directory domain controllers.
You can bind your clients to either the Open Directory domain, Active Directory Domain, or both. If you bind them to AD, you'll have to make the necessary edits to the ActiveDirectory.plist file if you're repurposing unused AD attributes.

Office Extend printers have issues with pullprint.
Office Extend printers have issues with pullprint.
This only happens when using Office Extend. Some office locations have been connected using Office Extend and then moved over to subscriber line which fixes the issues. printer is connected to port 4 of OEAP 600. Please suggest
Manishwhen the error occurs, the office temp files are owned by someone with the same uid, so office says the documents are in use even though they're not.
do your users login with network or portable homes? if so, they should all have unique uids/gids.
if they're logging in locally, then mounting afp shares with unique ids, that won't cut it.
the most efficient way to avoid this is to have your users login with network or portable homes. this may not make sense for your environment, however.
the other option is to change users' local uids, as outlined in the mvps article linked above. use dscl instead of nicl to do this.
