ITunes 6.0 & QuickTime 7.0.3 - No More Menu Items?

Question

I installed the recent iTunes 6.0 & QuickTime 7.0.3 updates via SU (repaired perms before and after), and after a reboot, I no longer have any menu items (in Finder and all apps) on the right side of my menu bar. I spent over 2 hours with 2 levels of Apple techs this morning and they couldn't solve the problem. I'm on a really fresh install of 10.4.2 and haven't added any haxies or menu items/prep panes, etc. Basically, a pristine install with only a few 3rd-party apps (MM Studio, Office, FileMaker, Transmit, etc.). About every 4 seconds, SystemUIServer crashes and writes a crash report - same as other have reported on these boards. However, trashing the systemui prefs and even replacing the Search.bundle as another thread suggested don't help. SysPrefs such as "show clock in menubar" don't stick. I've done all the usual diags (perms and repair disk) to no avail. I won't accept that I have to reinstall the OS YET AGAIN having just done it. Any ideas? Thx.

hmmm. okay, let's first see if this document is of any help:

... sometimes people find that they're not being allowed to edit the relevant keys. in those cases, it sometimes helps to shut down all background applications prior to the regedit. here's instructions on how to go about catching everything that could be running:
