Itunes/apple tv continuously losing the photo sync settings

Folks,
I have a large music collection synced to my apple tv from itunes. No issues with the music syncing.
Similarly I have nearly 40Gb of photos (~18000 images) synced. I don't use iphoto to manage these and hence I don't sync from iphoto. Instead I've opted to sync photos from a specified folder (~/Pictures/ATV) on my macbook. iTunes is then configured to sync the contents of this folder to the Apple TV.
When I make changes to this folders contents, I then run iTunes to have it sync these to the Apple TV.
However it often forgets that I'm syncing photos from this folder.. meaning that when I start itunes, the apple sync will take place and no pictures are transferred.. checking the photos tab of the device shows the Sync from Folder option unchecked (the folder itself is still selected in the combo list).. re-checking it will prompt to confirm syncing photos and then reactivate the syncing. But this wipes all photos from the Apple TV and then starts to resync the entire 40Gb of photos again which takes hours.
It seems that when small changes are made to the folder contents, that it still works. But larger changes such as deletion of one or more of the existing folders or adding of one or more new folders causes the problem.
This is a bag of pain! Either itunes can sync to the ATV from a folder or it can't. I don't want to use iPhoto.. I don't like it, it takes too long to import photos.
So can someone please tell me if this is a bug with photo folder syncing from itunes and/or Apple TV or if others have experienced the same kind of problem.
Thanks,
Cormac

Hi Cormac,
Since I upgraded to iTunes 9.0.3, I have exactly the same problem, even if I'm using iPhoto.
Each times, once I closed iTunes, when I reopen it and the sync with my Apple TV and iPhone begin, both units lose all my pictures (like you, around 15,000 images)... :o(
Apparently, this "bug" (more on this below), appears only when you choose to sync all your events, pictures, faces... If you choose a little partial sync (like 5 last events), the bug is not in effect (at least for me).
And yes, I called that the bug because we had a similar issue with a previous version of iTunes (9.0 or 9.0.1, I believe). Apple admitted it was a bug and the problem was fixed with the next version. Apparently, they broke it again with iTunes 9.0.3! :o(
The weird thing is, though, I cannot find anybody else on the Net, other than you and me having the same issue.
Sorry I didn't bring a solution to you but now, at least, you know you are not alone and will not spend hours and hours trying to figure what's wrong with your computer...
It is becoming annoying though that Apple is becoming like Windows. They fix something on one side but broke something else on the other...

  • How can I add an iPad to Apple Configurator without losing the user's settings, folders, etc?

When attempting to add an iPad that has already been in use (for some time) by a particular user into Apple Configurator, I end up having to either wipe the iPad entirely as if it is a new iPad, or restore the user's settings and configuration from iCloud during mini-setup. It seems to be one choice or the other.
Is there a way to add the "old" iPad into Apple Configurator for management purposes yet still be able to restore the user's settings from iCloud? That is - items like: folders, pictures, email settings, app data?

This isnt true. Connecting an unsupervised device to configurator and supervising it will wipe the device, there is no way around that. You can attempt an iCloud restore from here, but anything not backed up prior to supervising the device will be erased when supervising it. I have never tried to restore data from an unsupervised iPad so I have no clue if everything will come back.
Let me clarify... You can successfully restore an iCloud backup of an unsupervised iPad to a new (i.e. different) iPad and have it Supervised with data intact. The process below will allow Configurator to Supervise a device without wiping it when an iCloud backup from a different unsupervised iPad is restored to it.
Try it… Get 2 new unsupervised iPads… we'll call them iPad "A" and iPad "B." Take iPad "A" and install a few apps, take a few photos, change the background, create a new document in Pages, etc. Run an iCloud backup of iPad "A" using your Apple ID. This is our unsupervised backup of iPad "A."
Now take new unsupervised iPad "B" and start running through the setup assistant. When you get to the restore screen, choose to restore from iCloud backup. Log in with your Apple ID. Select the backup for iPad "A." The backup will restore and then the iPad will restart. Once it restarts, you get to a "Hello" screen on the iPad. At this point, plug the iPad into your Configurator computer. On the Prepare screen, turn Supervision ON and select "Don't restore backup." Click Prepare.
Configurator will not wipe the iPad. It will run through the supervision process but not wipe it. Once complete, you'll see that iPad "B" is now exactly the same as iPad "A", but if you go to Settings -> General -> Profiles on iPad "B" you will see a Supervision profile installed.
The key here is to use a different iPad from the originally backed up iPad. You can't restore the backup of iPad "A" to iPad "A" again and supervise it without wiping it. But you can take the backup of unsupervised iPad "A" and restore it to iPad "B" and retain apps, data, and settings of iPad "A" but with the Supervision profile.
    Hope this clarifies things!
    ~Joe
I see where your going with that. I dont have any way to reproduce this scenario in my environment, but I will take your word for it that this works. I have only ever plugged in an unsupervised device to configurator and gone through the setup, which always wipes the device. If your saying theres a way around that you should give that a shot OP.

  • ITunes looses photo sync settings for Apple TV (1st gen.)

Since the update to the new Photo app on my Mac, iTunes forgets the photo sync settings for my Apple TV (1st. generation, 160 GB HDD).
Every time I open the photo section of the Apple TV sync settings, all the options are turned off. Then I mark a couple of albums and sync the Apple TV >> all album appear on the Apple TV.
But after closing and re-opening iTunes in the photo settings everything is unmarked again. So on every following sync the photos on the Apple TV are easily erased :-( Resync them to the Apple TV takes hours (>30'000 photos!).
All the other sync settings in iTunes remain intact.
    Environment:
    - MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the latest SW (Mac OS, iTunes, Photo App, etc.)
    - Apple TV 1st gen 160 GB HDD

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.

Hi I have all my appletvs set to NEVER SLEEP - go to your appletv settings/general/sleep after and choose never sleep. Since doing that I have had no problem with them. Also I leave my 2010 macbook pro running itunes and permanently on and open - it is my main homesharing disk. I give it a sleep every now and then when not using appletv.
    Try that first anyway.

  • IPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.

iPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.  Any suggestions to fix it?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    Hi JkeeneSoldano,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
To regain access to your Apple ID, try to reset your password using one of these methods:
Answer your security questions. Use these steps if you know the answers to your security questions.
Use email authentication. We'll send you an email that you can use to change your password.
Use two-step verification. If you set up two-step verification, you can use it to change your password. You just need your recovery key and a trusted device.

  • I downloaded pictures to iphoto yesterday of my sister's Bat mitzvah, all of them are there except 10 of them are just caution signs. How do I fix this without losing the photos?

I downloaded pictures to iphoto yesterday of my sister's Bat mitzvah, all of them are there except 10 of them are just caution signs. How do I fix this without losing the photos?

The warning triangle means, that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnails and the photos and cannot show them in the browser.
Rebuild the iPhoto library to reconnect the photos. What is your iPhoto version? If it is iPhoto '11 do the following:
    Back up your iPhoto library.
Hold down the command and option/ alt keys while double-clicking the iPhoto icon to launch iPhoto.
Keep holding down the keys until you are seeing the FirstAid panel.
Select "rebuild database" from the panel.
Does that bring your photos back?
If not, download iPhoto Library Manager and use the rebuild function.
    See Old Toad's post:
Re: iPhoto has crashed on a number of occasions, but on 2 occasions also seems to delete several events, including the one I'm editing. When I go to reimport the last event, it shows them as already there. But I can't find them.

  • Over-the-air sync settings

iTunes says that bookmarks are being synced with my iPhone over the air from MobileMe. I only have MobileMe for my computer and not for my phone. Would this be the reason that I cannot find the over-the-air sync settings on my phone and also why they do not match the bookmarks that I have set on my computer? If that is the case, how can I manually set the bookmarks on my phone to match?

I only have MobileMe for my computer and not for my phone.
If you have MobileMe, it is for any and all computers/devices that you have set it up for.
Have you enabled Bookmark syncing in:
    Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > {Your MobileMe Account Name} > Bookmarks

  • How can I turn off over the air sync settings on my Mac iPhone

    Hi,
For some reason I am attempting to sync my iPhone with my laptop as usual but now in the iTunes app when I attach my iPhone and go to Info, it reads: Your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from MobileMe. Over the air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone. So here is the thing, I have looked online and have found nothing at all to show me how to do this on my iPhone. I want to be able to add info on my iPhone and then connect it with my laptop and sync it immediately with my laptop and also to add info on my laptop and immediately sync it with my iPhone. Please help. Thanks

On your iPhone go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then select your MobileMe account. Turn off the items you don't want synced over the air.

  • How to change the contact sync settings for icloud? please advise

how to change the contact sync settings for icloud? please advise?

There are no settings to change. Assuming you are using Lion 10.7.2 (or 10.7.3) - which you should be - you simply sign in in System Preferences>iCloud and check 'Contacts' and any other data you want to sync.
If you are using an earlier system you will not be able to sync your contacts, and there is no workaround. However you can sync them with Google or Yahoo contacts, though I don't know how well this works.

Well here is what you need to know the place where I plug the charger in on my iPod touch 4 is broken some of the rods are broken it is out of batteries however it is synced to itunes  it's three and a half years old so can I retrieve the photos on it please answer

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Suggestion to overhaul the photo/syncing/organizing system on the iPhone

I am currently going through and organizing my camera roll's photos into different photo albums, and I realized that the way photo organization is currently implemented is simply NOT up to Apple's standard of usability (****, it's not even up to Microsoft's....)
Not only can I not directly transfer images from the Camera Roll to an album of my choice directly on the iPhone, I can't even do that from within iTunes nor can I create albums directly on the iPhone (why not!????). The only way I can do that on Windows 7 is by manually creating folders outside of iTunes, and then syncing them.
But that got me thinking that not even the album approach to organizing photos is good. Say for instance I want to organize my photos by both people AND places. For instance I go on a trip and have a photo of a friend. In order to place that photo in an album for that trip, as well as place that photo of my friend in an album for that friend, I need to have TWO instances of the same photo, which takes up twice the space on my phone. Furthermore, I have to clone it manually via Windows etc.
What the iPhone needs is a simple, tried and true image tagging system, whereby the photo albums are not physical albums, they're simply based off of tags. This means the same photo can appear in multiple albums without requiring multiple instances of it on the phone.
Further, photos then become search-able via the phone's search spotlight. Currently the albums are not even search-able, let alone specific images. But if image tagging were to be implemented, it would allow particular "albums" to show up in the search results.
So rather than adding the ability to create albums via the phone and to move images from the Camera Roll to a particular album, you simply allow the user to create a bunch of pre-defined tags which can show up in a list when you go to tag each photo.
If Apple's feeling really ambitious, it could use the multi-select approach the camera role uses for sharing/deleting. Select a bunch of images, and apply the same tag(s) to all of them.
Meanwhile the current list of "albums" would appear exactly as it does now, except those albums would simply be based off the tags.
Anyway, there's no real point to this post other than to rant about how utterly poor the usability of the photo organization system is on an otherwise well thought-out device, and to offer a solution to fix it.

The sync process for photos is for the most part is centered around using iPhoto on a Mac, or with using a supported 3rd party photo management app on a PC.
Photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are designed to be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. iPhoto supports importing photos from any digital camera including from the iPhone's Camera Roll. iPhoto includes a places and faces feature. In order for a photo to be available in an available iPhoto album, event, places, and faces, the photo must be in the main iPhoto library. A photo in an iPhoto album, event, places, and faces is not duplicated and can be in all 4 categories. A photo in an album event, places, and faces includes a pointer to the original photo stored in the iPhoto library. The same with iTunes playlists. You can't have a song in an iTunes playlist unless the song is in the main iTunes library, and a song can be in multiple playlists without being duplicated. A song in an iTunes playlist is not duplicated.
What the iPhone needs is a simple, tried and true image tagging system, whereby the photo albums are not physical albums, they're simply based off of tags. This means the same photo can appear in multiple albums without requiring multiple instances of it on the phone.
Already done this way with iPhoto on a Mac, and should be the same when using a 3rd party photo management application on a PC.
