ITunes automatically imports music after re-boots (damaged .itl file)

Every time I start ITunes after my computer has been re-booted, ITunes starts importing my music library and says I have a damaged Music Library file (itl). If I allow ITunes to import my music files then it works fine (all playlists and ratings intact) even if I exit & re-enter the Itunes Application. However, as soon as I reboot the system I get the same damaged file dialog box. Also, I've tried waiting after I have booted the system for a long time to make sure it isn't conflicting with startup processes.
I have a lot of songs and it takes ITunes a long time to import each time, and it is really frustrating. A temporary work-around is that I make a backup copy of the "itl" and "xml" files each time after I exit Itunes when I have made changes. Then after a reboot when I start Itunes, I stop it from importing the library, finding artwork, gapless scan, etc... I copy the previously saved "itl" & "xml" files into the ITunes folder and the ITunes program will then start up correctly with all my music files, ratings & playlists.
_*A. COMMENTS*_
1. Since the "itl" file I copy into itunes folder (as per my work-around)is an exact copy of the "itl" file that was originally in the ITunes folder after a reboot, I don't think the ITunes file is actually damaged, since ITunes will boot from this file after Itunes is started a 2nd time. This also shows me that it is not a path issue.
_*B. SETUP*_
1. Dell 3.4Ghz Pentium 4
2. MS Windows XP Home Edition (service pack 3)
3. Recently upgraded to ITunes 9.0.3.15 (did not resolve problem)
4. McAfee Security Center virus/firewall software
5. Ad-Aware spyware checker(resident)
6. Spy-bot Search and Destroy spyware checker(resident)
5. My Music files are located in C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Music\ (itunes folder is also in same folder)
6. My Itunes Library .itl file is 2,842 KB
7. My Itunes Music Library .xml file is 16,580 KB
_*C. WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR*_
1. I have re-installed ITunes
2. I ran scan disk (fixed errors & checked physical disk). It did say it repaired something with an "XML" extension, but I didn't write it down because I thought it fixed the issue, but I don't think it was the itunes xml file
3. I cleaned a bunch of junk files (internet cache, etc) and defragged
4. I completely un-installed ITunes and ran a registry cleaner to remove all references to Itunes, Then I installed ITunes. ITunes imported my library and lost all my ratings & playlists however it found all of my artwork (not just automatically created from internet) I re-used an old .itl file for ratings/playlists. However I did try with the newly imported "itl" file and the same problem was persistent
5. I tried restoring my computer to month ago when everything was working correctly
6. I tried for hours looking through multiple forums and the ones that I found that have the same problem (only after reboots) were never resolved. Most of the others just tell people how to get their library back
7. I tried to call Apple Itunes tech support on the phone and was told that Apple does not provide Itunes phone support for PC's. I did pay good money for 30Gb & 16Gb Iphones, so I am giving Apple Money. I would own a Mac however my profession uses software not supported by Apple.
_*D. QUESTIONS*_
1. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I'm going to try to figure out how to start in some sort of safe mode and log the processes to see if there are any conflicts, but I'm running out of options.
2. I did copy rather large 1200x12000 artwork from the internet into some of the CD's because I was printing them, however I later removed the artwork and replaced it with 300x300. I noticed the Album artwork Cache & Download folders seems rather large and convoluted. I was thinking about possibly deleting all artwork from my library and deleting these folders to see if there is something in there.
Please Help, I've spent far too many hours trying to resolve this issue. I just don't understand that after uninstalling, and cleaning registry that re-installing didn't fix this issue.

The link you posted wasn't really any help, but I believe I have finally resolved the issue (after 2 consecutive reboots without problems -- knocks on wood). I wish I could single out exactly what resolved the issue, but I went crazy and did a lot of things last night/this morning (and didn't have the patience to reboot after each single change).
Here's a list of a few things I remember doing
1. Installed updated hardware drivers using Uniblue driver update software (a couple were bundles that affected quite a few things). I booted up this morning only to get a repeated "REFMONINITIALIZATIONFAILED" dialog with the blue screen of death. I wasn't worried as I did a complete backup of all my personal files last night, anticipating a full rebuild today. So the next time I rebooted I used the "last known good configuration".
2. I don't have any indexing programs (that I'm aware of), but I clicked the library file, xml files and all other files in the itunes library root directory and unchecked the "For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file" box after right clicking and selecting "properties" and then "advanced"
3. I rolled back ALL Uniblue SpeedUPMYPC2009 system tweaks (except internet) that were automatically done when I ran the program on 1/10/10.
I have a strong inclination that one (or more) of the Uniblue system tweaks did something that prevented my library file from being accessed the first time after after a boot that I started ITunes. I apparently hadn't accessed ITunes for a couple weeks after I ran the Uniblue program, so it didn't register that it could have caused the issue. At some point in the future I'll try to pin down which tweak caused the problem, but for now I've wasted far too much dealing with this and don't care if my computer runs a few milliseconds slower.

I frequently download audiobook files from internet sites . After downloading the file(s) iTunes automatically imports and starts playing them. I DO NOT want this to happen. I wish to control this manually. I've tried iTunes preferences but can't determin how to change this.

I have a couple of thoughts. Try this: select one of the files that you've downloaded, Get Info, then change Open with to Quicktime Player and underneath, Change all. I can't promise but it may help. Also, what browser are you using? You should be able to tell it not to open the file. In Firefox, for example, it's under Prefs>Content>File Types and then you can just have it safe the files rather than open them. I think, in Safari, Preferences>General and then uncheck Open safe files after downloading.

Same Problem here. Also, when this happens, it loses whatever album art was playing before. I've tried reinstalling and it doesn't help. Any ideas how to fix this? It's really annoying!

Thanks Paul; but, taking your suggestion didn't solve the problem. As mail is part of the OS, the updates don't have the capacity to reinstall applications; so, I had to reinstall the OS. I now have my mail back (although it didn't appear on the dock--I had to go to applications and activate it and then put it back in the dock. Thanks again for trying.

ITunes automatically importing songs once they hit my computer

Wonder if you can help. iTunes is automatically importing any music file that hits my computer into iTunes when i dont want it to.
I try to keep my iTunes collection "clean" with just the things i really want to keep but i have lots of other music files around my computer (demo files i am listening to, mp3's sent by friends). I store them in my Sony/Users/Music directory. my iTunes media folder is set below that at Sony/Users/Music/Itunes/iIunes Music so it should be quite simple to keep them separate.
however, since i downloaded the latest version of iTunes last year, now for some reason it seems to look into the higher level "Music" directory (that includes all my other music files) and anytime anything appears in that directory, it automatically imports it and moves it into the iTunes permanent collection, which is making it a mightmare to try to keep my various files organised.
Has anyone else had this problem and/or can suggest remedies?

Importing music after library is deleted

I recently lost my Library in iTunes and proceeded to import music from my C:\mymusic dir. When doing this, I get 3 or 4 copies of every song imported into my iTunes library. Is there a switch or setting I need to change.

Whenever I open a RAW file from LR into Photoshop and save it within Photoshop as a tiff or whatever, it gets automatically imported to the LR catalog. Is there a way to avoid this?

It does stack with the original on my computer. Opening the raw image in Photoshop as a smart object does allow you to go back to the raw file in Camera Raw. And it adjusts the raw file. But when you close Camera Raw you are back working on the image in Photoshop. All the work you do in Photoshop is saved in the TIF or PSD. If you then go back to Lightroom and delete that TIF or PSD file you have thrown away all the adjustments done in Photoshop. Of course the raw file will be impacted by the adjustments that you made in Camera Raw, and it affected the TIF or PSD. But you're still throwing away all the Photoshop work.

ITunes automatically plays music when computer moves

I work with my computer on my lap 90% of the time and every time I move my computer in the slightest, iTunes starts playing music. I've realized that some form of shuffle is on, but the sensitivity is so high music is continuously starting and stopping any time I move my legs at all. It is the most frustrating thing and I have no idea how to turn it off/increase sensitivity/etc. Please help!

That's not a built-in feature. You must have installed some third-party software that uses motion sensing to control iTunes.

VIsta + Itunes = Damaged .itl file

After 2 months of flawless use of Itunes on Vista, I would open itunes and it said the library was damaged, spent 20 minutes correcting it them worked. Now after the 3rd time this has happened it now will not show me anything in the library of itunes at all. I tried changing back the damaged files to the correct namd for the file to force it to recover but it simply will not. Any ideas how to rename the old damaged file or get it to see them correctly without corrupting the .itl file again?

FYI the music is still on the PC unchanged and unmoved. I could let it rebuild the library by adding the file folder back but I do not believe I updated the files that i changed information on....

Itunes won't open, missing or damaged .itl files

okay, when i open itunes, i recieve the error message that says, "Itunes has stopped working".
I uninstalled itunes, quicktime, and all other apple software, deleted itunes and quicktime app folders and basically anything tracing back to them. Then i reinstalled itunes and received the same error.
if i hold shift while opening itunes, i cannot find any itl files ANYWHERE on my cpu. i have searched everywhere. is there a way to install those files again? when i reinstall itunes, those files don't come back for some reason.
at this point, i have read through hundreds of forums dealing with these types of issues and found no solution. any idea what is going on? if anything, how can i "reset" or "start over" my windows user so that i can reinstall for the "first time"? any help is appreciated.

I'm having the same issue, however the following must be noted, I successfully did the update on my Acer 5100 Laptop running Windows XP SP2. The only difference between my Acer and the Desktop (where itunes 7.5 will not install) is that the laptop is a newer techonolgy.
Afraid this has to be taken into consideration. If your sporting an older pc then you like myself are running the risk of NOT being able to support future upgrades, and APPLE, MICROSOFT know this but won't really send you a newsletter telling you to upgrade your PC

Damaged .itl files

Every morning when I log into itunes 8.2.1.6 the itunes .itl files are reported as damaged. The old .itl is moved to a damaged file. Then Itunes has to rebuild. I have removed and re-installed itunes. I have deleted all of the playlists. I can log out and log in fine. But each morning the .itl files are damaged.

Some other software on your PC is probably conflicting with itunes when it tries to save the ITL file. Do you have a lot of .tmop files in your itunes folder?
It can be very tricky finding out what the other software is. For example, read this post by redkeefy. redkeefy used SysInternal's {url=http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx]Process Explorer[/url] tool to find that a Sony program was deleting (not damaging, entirely deleting) the ITL file.
Somethig easier to try is to make a brand-new folder named C:TESTING
Copy a good ITL file over into it while itunes is closed. Now press _and hold_ the shift key while starting itunes. When prompted, choose to open an existing library and browse to the ITL file you just copied over to the TESTING folder.
Does it still get damaged?
That is an old PC trick to fake out whatever software is currently interfering with the ITL file in the iTunes folder. When you make a new folder, that other software doesn't know anything about the new TESTING folder, and leaves itunes alone.

My iTunes can't import music after intalled 10.4.11(PPC)

My laptop is Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz. After installed 10.4.11, I double-click some mp3 songs. iTunes pop-up as usually then it takes no action. Then I try File->import . Not thing happen either.
and The Safari 3.0.4 from 10.4.11 haves problem, too. I went to Adobe website to download Acrobat Reader 8. I went into the page and select the os version, but the continue button didn't show up. then I used Firefox. It's fine. Can I switch back to 10.4.10?

Hi, gracebug. Installing and using OS 9 for Classic mode does not require OS 9 drivers to be installed. They're only needed if you want to start the computer up in OS 9, which isn't possible with your Mac anyway.

Downloading iTunes and importing music

Hi.
I am using an ACER 5610. This crashed recently so I rebooted using original start up discs.
Luckily all my music etc was on an external drive. I have tried to download iTunes. It downloads fine, to my external drive, but I then receive the below message AFTER successful install:
"Warning! iTunes was not properly installed. If you want iTunes to be able to retrieve CD information from the Internet, you need to reinstall iTunes".
Despite the above message iTunes opens OK. I then import from the external hard drive my music (approx 6000 tracks). Then I get below message:
"There is not enough room on "ACER" to copy all the requested files. Itunes will copy as many files as possible"
There is plenty of memory on my external drive. I'm stumped. Can anyone help?
