Itunes cannot locate files stored on external hard drive

I use a maxtor external hard drive for my music storage(f:itunes) with 7000 songs on it. My Itunes library all of a sudden stopped locating the files. Through forum posts, I used advanced/change file location to f:itunes, and the only way I could hear the songs was to open the f drive and individually click on each file.
I thought using library/consolidate library would solve this problem, now I have 2 or 3 copies of each song. Some of them play (with Fdrive connected) while others still show the cannot locate source message. When I tried a few songs I deleted the ones that would not play when clicked on, while keeping the ones that did. After deleting, the original ones now won't play.
How do I get my original set up to work, with Itunes library on my laptop to only display 1 track not 2 or 3, and play from the source files contained on my external HD? The other puzzling thing is when I connect my external drive, the prompt that asks what you want to do with the Maxtor displays a "F:\ access denied" message. Is this the main cause of my issues?

Well, before you wipe out your library and start all over, there is something to try.
You have to have the option set for itunes 'keep itunes folder organized' checked.
Change the location back to the default by pressing the reset folder location.
You will get a message asking if you want itunes to copy everything to match your settings. For god's sake, do NOT say yes or it will copy everything onto your C: drive.
Let it do its stuff. Then when it is finished, change the setting back to F:
+i-tunes music folder location to F:\mp3s+
Again, do NOT answer that question as yes.
Depending on how large your library is, this can take a while. My library has 27K tracks and it takes over a half hour. But you might get the links back. What this does is force itunes to look at all the paths.

  • ITunes library cannot locate files saved on external hard drive

Hi, most of my music files are stored on my external hard drive. iTunes has decided it can't locate them and i'm wondering if there is any way of doing that without have to re-create my library from scratch or individually locate each file (approx 92GB of music)?!? I tried the tutorial on re-creating an iTunes library hoping that in doing so it would locate the files but no luck... i spent a LONG time organising that library and i'm really hoping i won't have to start over... thanks!

I have the same problem. I tried following the procedures for "Using Multiple Libraries" without success, even though the instructions explicitly state that you can name your iTunes library (the folder containing all of your iTunes content and the iTunes Library.itl file) whatever you like and store it anywhere.

  • HT201250 Can Time Machine backup files stored on external hard drive

Can Time Machine back up files that are stored on external hard drive and save them on a different external hard drive?
I have my pictures stored on an external hard drive connected to my iMac. I want to make an exact copy of the pictures folder on a separate external hard drive. Can Time Machine do that?
    If yes, how?
If no, what's a good way to create a mirror of the folder on External Hard Drive #1 (the original) on External Hard Drive #2 (the backup)?
I am not opposed to manually copying every couple weeks or month, but (1) it's less convenient and (2) I got an error message the first time I tried this saying the files couldn't be copied because some of the files being copied had the same name as each other (not exactly that, I'm at work and don't have the message in front of me right now, but that was the gist of it).
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • Files stored on external hard drive

If I try to open bounced files I've saved on my external hard drive, Logic quits unexpectedly. If I try to open Logic first, and go 'File - open - hard drive' etc, the file names in the list are greyed out so I can't open them. What am I doing wrong?

    Things to try:
    1) Is your external hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended? (check with Disk Utility)
    2) Try checking the external drive, again with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior if you have it.
    3) Which OS version are you using? If you're using Tiger, update to 10.4.11, if Leopard, 10.5.5. Your message indicates 10.0 which can't be correct.
    4) Try adding a new user account, with admin privileges, and see if the problem continues in this new user account.

  • I cannot view files on my external hard drive

I have an external seagate hard drive.
When I plug it in, I can only see half of the files.
    (the new ones)
I know there are old pictures and videos on it,
and the data amount accounts for it.
I have tried to verify and repair the disk.
It said that nothing was wrong.
I have recently updated to Mavericks.
My mac pro is about 3 years old
and my Seagate disk is about 5 years old.
How do I view these old files?

Can you see the files on another computer? Since you have it formatted to also work with Windows, can a Windows computer see them? If so, do you have enough disk space to copy the files off to somewhere else?
The last line of the screen shot states partitions need to be updated. If you can salvage the files, I would reformat the disk.

  • New PC, I want itunes to open up in my external hard drive (music location) but it opens in the icloud. Itunes file location is correct but it navigates to the cloud, help!

I have a new PC, Iwanted to direct itunes to my external hard drive (music location) but nothing seemed to work. I've now uninstalled and re installed itunes locating it in my external hard drive, however when I open itunes it directs itself to the icloud. I've checked the file location and it is in the external hard drive. How do I direct it to the correct place?

Setting the path to the media folder only tell iTunes where to put new content, not which library file to open. If you moved your entire library to the external drive then hold down shift as you start iTunes and browse to the iTunes Library.itl file. If you only copied the media folder you'll either need to redo the migration from your old computer, or import the media folder into a fresh library.

  • How can I store my music files on an external hard drive and listen to them through iTunes that way?

How can I store my music files on an external hard drive and listen to them through iTunes that way? At the moment they're both on the external hard drive and also stored on the computer but I'm quickly running out of memory on my iBook G4 so I'd like to only keep them on the external hard drive and, if possible, delete them from my computer's hard drive. At the moment, when the hard drive isn't plugged in a lot of the files won't play and I get the exclamation mark next to the particular song in iTunes, but everything plays fine when the hard drive is plugged in.
    Thank you.

Sounds like your files are playing from the external drive already.  To check go to iTunes - Preferences - Advanced and check the Media Folder Location.  Change it to the external drive if you need to.

In the past, when I updated iTunes, some items would be 'lost'. I quit updating, still running 10.6. I do keep my files on an external hard drive, which I plug in before starting iTunes. If I leave the drive off, and update, would that keep me from losing any files? Also, does anyone know how to search the iTunes store by price? I'm particularly interested in movies and audiobooks... Thanks

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first.  Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one?  The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless).  To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes.  To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup".  Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

Can you locate the iTunes Library.itl file on the old drive? Ideally you would have simply copied over the entire iTunes folder structure from <User's Music> on the old computer into <User's Music> on the new one to transfer the library will all playlists, ratings, play counts etc. intact.

  • ITunes Library stored on external hard drive

My iTunes Library is contained on an external hard drive which is in turn connected to an iMac, all of which connects to my airport network. I control the playback of the content on my Powerbook on the various airport express fed music systems in my apartment.
Is there anyway I can instruct the iTunes I use on my powerbook to always use this external drive? I currenly have to reset the library location each time I boot up (the Powerbook).
Also any music I download from iTunes store is saved to the hard drive on the powerbook (and then moved over to the hard drive manually). I'm looking for a way to sync the whole setup? I intend to change my airport extreme to the next generation and connect the hard drive to it so I'm guess this will help but is there a way around this break in the chain.
Also to keep both iTunes Library database files on both machines identical I currently copy from one to the other but this can at time cause problems in automatically recognising the location of a file, and then have to locate etc.
    Any suggestion gratefully receieved.

I took a second look at my settings. I do find the Music Folder on the other drive set as the location. Possibly I forgot that I've changed that too.
So, maybe you could try to set this in the preferences with a little help help from the alias in the default home folder. :-D
I could suggest an AppleScript to automatically connect to your server by setting this script-applet as default startup in you user account settings.

set myPassword to "password" --enter your password here

    "afp://192.168.1.1/disk2", ¬
    "afp://192.168.1.1/disk3"}
set myServerCount to the number of items of myServers
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with i from 1 to myServerCount
set thisServer to item i of myServers
repeat 5 times --i repeat this a couple of time to prevent connection drop-out
    try
mount volume thisServer as user name myUserName with password myPassword

  • Can I update to itunes 9.2 even though I have moved my media files to an external hard drive?

I moved my ITunes media files to an external hard drive.  If I upgrade to ITunes 9.2 will ITunes still know that the media files are located on the external hard drive?

Not sure since I haven't used iTunes 9 in awhile, but if it doesn't, the fix is pretty simple:
Go into iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and change the location of the media folder to your external HD.

  • Bought a MBA and am trying to keep iTunes files on an external hard drive. Having problems.

Hi, I bought a MBA 13" and want to keep my iTunes files on an external hard drive to save space. However, I keep running into problems. I can't get the iTunes Media folder to stay on the folder in my external hard drive. Whenever I unplug it, regardless if iTunes is open or not, it changes back to the media file on the MBA. I tried renaming the media folder and deleting it, but the computer just makes another if I do that and then ends up deleting my whole library, forcing me to load it all back from my hard drive. Can anyone help me out on this? Thanks.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !
