ITunes could not back up the iPod because the iPod disconnected

I had and solved a problem similar to the one reported by others: My iPod Touch 5 would not back up to iTunes. I was trying to update the iPod from iOS 8.1.3 to iOS 8.2 using iTunes on my PC and iTunes needed to back up the iPod before installing iOS 8.2. All of the attempts ended with the error message, "iTunes could not back up the iPod 'username' because the iPod disconnected."
I was finally able to update to iOS 8.2 directly from the iPod using wifi rather than through iTunes on my PC but the iPod still would not sync/backup with iTunes. (iTunes version 12.1.1.4 running under Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) SP1.) I tried a soft reset on the iPod; powering down and back up the PC; restarting iTunes; disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod. Nothing helped (I did not turn off my security software). The "Backup now" command and the "Sync" command in iTunes both resulted in the same error message as given above. "Sync via wifi" was NOT checked in iTunes. The backup file in the PC was renamed "Backup-Old," forcing iTunes to start a new file, but that didn't help either.
Finally, I discovered that Backup/Sync DID work if I started the Sync from the iPod using the "Sync Now" command in "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" under the "General" section of "Settings." After doing a backup once that way, the backup via iTunes worked properly. I don't know why it worked that way but obviously some block has been cleared. This method might be added to the list of "things to try."

I have the same problem tonight for the first time. I restarted the iPod and my powerbook then used disk utilities to repair disk permissions then tried again. It got stuck on step 4 13 of 13 songs. Each time I try it gets a few more songs over before it freezes. Then I get an error message; Unknown sync error
0xE800400B.
While it is syncing the "s" on "slide to cancel" on the iPod screen is flashing. Finally iTunes freezes and I have to "force quit".
In previous tries the iPod turned off yet it still appeared on the list of devices in iTunes even after getting the "unknown error" message.

  • ITunes could not synch calendars to iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

Started getting an error message during iPhone synch about two weeks ago: "iTunes could not synch calendars to iPhone because the iPhone disconnected"
    - Am synching to my Outlook calendar on a system running Windows 7
    - Everything else (contacts, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.) synchs just fine
    - Tried totally resetting the iPhone and restoring the firmware
    - Tried deleting the backups, preferences and resetting synch history
    - Tried forcing a rewrite/replacement of the calendar database using iTunes
Nothing sems to work...still get the same message about not synching the calendar due to the iPhone disconnecting, but of course, it really hasn't disconnected since I can get it to immediately synch anything else.
    Any ideas out there? Thanks...

Thanks midwestcraft. I had this problem and your answer solved it for me.
Thought this further info may be of use to some who wants more historic dates in their calendar.
I had "do not sync events older than" unchecked and the input field set to "0". When I changed it to 180, it worked perfectly. I've found that I can increase this number to "545" - anything higher causes the error. This seems to coincide with some strange multiple-entry events in my calendar.
Don't know if this will be a clue for somebody to fix the issue.

  • Itunes could not back up your iphone because an error occurred

I am using an iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.2 and am trying to back up the device onto a Window 7 pro (64bit) (4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU) machine using iTunes 12.0.1.26 using the USB connection. iTunes and iOS are currently up to date. There are a few (less than a month's) updates outstanding for Windows. When I try to back up the iPhone, iTunes gives the following error: 'iTunes could not back up the iPhone "Mike's iPhone" because an error occurred'. Hmm ... no error code! So, I searched on the Internet for solutions or even for potential problems. I have deleted all of the photos on the iPhone. I rebooted the iPhone and PC. I am not using a USB hub. I tried disconnecting from the Internet and disabling all anti-virus software. The iPhone is not jail-broken. I tried backing the iPhone up using an old PC running Windows XP pro, with a fresh installation of iTunes. I still got the same error message. So, I tried installing CopyTrans Shelbee version 1.013 software for managing iPhone backups. This also gave me an error message, albeit a somewhat cryptic one: 'Your device returned an unknown error (open_dprotected_np error: Too many levels of symbolic links (62) at path "/var/mobile/Applications/28EF45E0-435A-4777-823F-8E286739B7ED/Documents/Locati onToCoreData.sqlite" )'. Has anyone had anything similar or have any idea how I might get around the problem? From the Shelbee error message, it looks as though the iPhone itself is having a problem generating the information for the backup rather than the PC application having problems making sense of that information. Failing any solution with iTunes or Shelbee, are there any other backup solutions I might try?

  • ITunes could not sync contacts ... because the iPhone disconnected

I had both an iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (2nd gen w/ 3.0 software) syncing to Mobile Me and to my mac. All seemed well except I had a few duplicate entries in contacts. In trying to clean up the duplicates in MobileMe syncing I turned off contact syncing on the phone then turned it back on again. Then I started getting the following error.
iTunes could not sync contacts to the iPhone "iPhone" because the iPhone disconnected.
I've: reinstalled iTunes, completely wiped the iPhone back to factory, Forced a refresh of MobileMe from the Mac to Mobile Me.etc. Symptoms seem to be getting worse instead of better. Now the iPod touch is also screwed up and has the same error as above except for the reference to iPhone.
    Current status:
iPhone: Contacts - Had a mess, but I seem to have it working. One set of contacts. Calendar - will not sync with Mac. Synced to MobileMe, but empty. Get spinning network activity symbol when in Calender app.
iPod Touch - Calendar will not sync with Mac. blank synced with Mobile me but empty, Contacts has the separate On my Mac and Mobile Me group listings, but otherwise seems ok. Syncs with Mac.
iPod Nano - Contacts seem ok, Calendar seems ok,
MobileMe - Once I reset it seems ok.
Other info that may or may not apply. There are two other Macs synced by MobileMe. I've reset them as well. Multiple user accounts on each machine.

By wiping both iPhone and iPod and trying syncing with another computer I've come to the conclusion that something with MobileMe sync is the problem.
I can set up both to work fine with my Mac Pro and a new Mac Book Pro as long as I don't set up MobileMe syncing. As soon as I sync with MobileMe I start having problems, particularly with Calendar.
MobileMe seems to work fine computer to computer, until the iPhone/iPod get involved, then the MobileMe copy gets messed up. Version on computer seems to stay ok.
Not sure where to go from here... other than call Apple or go to the Apple Store.

  • IOS4: iTunes could not back up...because a session could not be established

After successfully installing iOS4 yesterday and using it for awhile, this morning I started receiving the "could not back up because a session could not be established with the iPhone" message. This occurs on sync after several sync messages have displayed in the iTunes status window.
I have restarted the Mac, reconnected the iPhone, blown out all the connectors, etc.
    ?????

I have the same problem. Even more so: 10.6.4 completely ruined my iMac, to the point everything I did became a beachball party. After 20 € of phone calls to AppleCare, had to erase the HD and restore stuff from an early-June back-up. Furthermore, only updated to 10.6.3.
Now, regarding the iPhone, I get the same message everyone in this thread is getting: *"..because a session could not be established."*
I really don't want to restore to factory settings and - again - resintall everything and lose progress on games (+30) and reconfigure apps. I did this already. Did NOT solve the problem.
I am at a loss for words towards Apple. Who tests their software. Drunk managers that leave phones on bars? Is that it?
Also: tried the "Hard reset" option. Problem remains.
When restoring to factory settings, or choosing to backup from a backup session, I get the message "won't change the iphone's firmware", meaning, i won't be able to go back to 3.1.3, right?
This and 10.6.4 = fail. Its the end of any early adopting from me.

  • Itunes could not sync calenddars to X because the iPhone disconnected

I've been trying to sync my calendar with my iPhone to decidedly frustrating results.
First I tried on my MAC (with iCal). Got the message "iTunes could not sync calendars to the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected."
Then I tred with my PC (with outlook). Exact same message.
Looking at LIST view in my iPhones calendar, there don't appear to be any events in the phone itself.
Any ideas, suggestions, or pointers to some direction?
    Thanks!

  • Itunes could not back up iPhone

iTunes could not back up iPhone "name" because an error occurred.
Not on the computer and not in the Cloud. When I try to sync I always get this message.
    I have a iPhone 4S with version 6.1.2 / iMac 2012 with 10.8.2 / iTunes version 11.0.2
I also have an iPad3 which does a sync and/or back up on the same computer without problem.
I disables Wi-Fi Sync, deleted the backup file at preferences/device - I only see my iPad back up.
I don't have any password protected apps or advanced security.
    Help would be appreciated!

mine does the same thing. I have tried 3 different computers. After it takes hours to load, it finally says that it cannot back up the iphone because it was disconnected. But i never did anything to disconnect it.

  • Error--iTunes could not back up because the iPod disconnected

Today for the first time I am beginning to get an error message every time I attempt to sync my iPod Touch. When I click on Sync, it appears to be going through all the proper sequence of steps. In the window at the top, it says it's starting the sync, backing up, preparing to sync, then syncing music, contacts, etc. Then when it gets to "finishing sync," a window pops up that says, "iTunes could not back up the iPod 'myname' because the iPod disconnected." Yet, in the sidebar under devices, it still shows up as being connected and I can click on any of the content areas in the sidebar and see the titles. There is still an Eject button to the right of the battery level indicator.
I've seen other similar threads about disconnections, not not this exact problem. I tried deleting all the iTunes and iPod plists in Preferences, but that didn't help.
Why did it just start doing this now and what can be done to fix this? I have iOS 4.2.1 on the device and recently updated to OS 10.6.6. Could that new system update of iTunes have created the problem?
