ITunes doesn't see Aperture Library - iMovie doesn't see Aperture Library

Issues:
Nearly all of my videos in the Aperture/iPhoto library do not show up when I select iPhoto library option in iMovie and iMovie is unable to locate them in any other way.  Sometimes the option to select the iPhoto library is completely missing.
iTunes does not recognize my Aperture library, and I get the following message:
"Your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications." After reading through forums and multiple Genius Bar appointments here is most of what I have done:
Created multiple new Aperture libraries, selected them in Aperture, rebooted, switched back and forth - Note:  iTunes DID recognize the new blank libraries
Booted Aperture with the Command + Option keys and run all three options to repair permssions and even rebuilt the database
Booted Aperture with the Option key and selected the library I was using all along (this worked for someone in a forum)
Opened iPhoto (not Aperture) and selected an option to share photos
Run "Verify Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
Run "Repair Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
Reinstalled OSX
Reinstalled Aperture
Reinstalled iTunes
Reinstalled iMovie
Run a virus and malware scan (no issues)
Verified that Aperture was set to share previews and had a Genius go through all of my options to ensure they were correct in iTunes, Aperture, and iPhoto
Have ran "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" from the Command + Option + R recovery partition multiple times.  Each time it just hangs for hours, the latest attempt ran for over 24 hours before I finally stopped it.
Oh yes, and I found and deleted the file com.apple.iApps.plist
None of these things fixed either of my issues.  According the the Genius at my last appointment, now I have to call Apple Care and pay to get support.  I must have misunderstood what the Genius Bar was about when I bought my Mac and why I purchased the One to One training.  Before I call Apple Care, I was hoping someone might have run across this and can help me.
I asked the Genius if I now need to just create a new Aperture Library and move all of my content to it (that was the last resort for someone in a forum); however, he was concerned that even if this might work that I probably have deeper permission and/or other issues that need to be addressed and that doing so would not fix the root cause.
Thanks for taking the time to read through this issue.

Understood.  I thought perhaps the period meant that I was finished and just needed to call Apple Care and fork out the fee.
The formats are primarily .MOV straight from the iPhone.  Since going to a Mac, I have pretty much given up on using my Sony Handycam for family videos due to the pains of having to locate, identify, convert, and export AVCHD video to watch on Apple TV.  It is just too easy to take video with my iPhone and import it and immediately watch it, although the quality is nothing close to a dedicated video camera, especially indoors and in lower light.  All of the video formats in Aperture are supported and most all of my older home videos and Sony Handycam videos are sitting on an external drive (hoping that one day I will have the time to figure out a decent workflow to access them after I work all of the bugs out of iMovie).  Great thought though.
All my content is managed.  After a handful of One-to-One sessions at the Apple Store, I finally learned that you could not reference videos in iMovie and had to either have them in the iMovie Events directory or in iPhoto (at least that was what she said).  Their solution was to import the videos into iPhoto so they could be easily accessed in iMovie.  After I had issues mentioned in this post their solution was for me to purchase Aperture that could handle larger libraries.  This was supposed to fix the issue and allow iMovie to see my videos.  When that didn't work they said that I needed to purchase Final Cut Pro.  I'm just a Dad who wants to make a few memorable home movies for his family and I don't think that I should have to purchase a $300 application, especially after paying a premium for my Mac and the iLife software, which I am deeply regretting.  But I digress.
I have repaired permissions again and am in the process of repairing the library and will rebuild it again if that doesn't work.  It is taking longer so I won't be able to post the results until a later time.  Definitely worth a shot to try this again.
If this doesn't work I will take the time to create a new Aperture library.  Like I previously mentioned, this was the last resort for another gentlemen who had a similar issue.  After doing this it might explain why the "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" from the Command + Option + R recovery partition is getting hung up and not working.  I'll post the results at a later date.  If I could save just one person the time, gas, and stress I've experienced it would be worth it.
One additional question?  I read a gentlemen's post that passionately argued against ever using iPhoto, Aperture, or iMovie to ever manage video files.  He suggested using folders and a file naming system similar to what I used when I was on a PC using Adobe Elements.  Do you have any thoughts on that?
For my situation, I have two concerns:
I'm afraid this would not allow me to watch the videos on Apple TV as simply as I can now (although I don't know this to be the case for certain).  If the videos aren't in my photo library, I'm not sure how I would be able to access them through Apple TV.
Since I'm a proud Dad I have hundreds of video files spanning many years, so I also don't want to lose the ability to quickly peruse my event library and find content that I want to import into a project in iMovie.  At one point I imported some video files to edit that weren't stored in iMovie, and I could only see the file name and date and had to guess if there was content on it that I wanted.  When you have hundreds of clips like I do that isn't practical.
He argued that these programs were never meant to manage content and worked much more efficiently using this method.  I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts.
Thanks again.

Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

Have you copied your content over from your old computer and onto the new on ? If not, and you still have your old computer, then there a number of methods described on this page which you can use to copy your library over : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 . If you no longer have your old computer then have you got a backup of your content that you can copy onto the new computer and add into iTunes ?

I haven't had this issue before, I have always used the content library on the screen but haven't used this for about a month. How can I make the Content Library available?

Thanks so much! I am backing up the entire computer now with an external hard drive - this should be fine right? And surely if I am backing up the whole computer these projects/videos will be backed up too? I wasn't sure how to do this any other way and I am clearly not great with tech issues. Once this is done and I am sure my projects/videos are safe I will do the delete and reinstall bit. Thanks for taking the time to help

the new U2 album shows purchased via the itunes store on my windows computer, but doesn't appear in my library

On your Windows computer, go to the iTunes Store. On the right column of the iTunes Store under QUICK LINKS, you'll see an option called Purchased. Click on that and you'll see all items that are tied to your iTunes Store account. You should see the U2 album there and you can download it from the cloud. You'll now have a copy stored on your Windows computer.

  • Aperture repaired library, now it says there's an error in the library and doesn't open it

I'm running Aperture 3.2.3, and the following happened:
I'm keeping my library on an external harddrive. As I had the library open in Aperture, the external hardrive got accidentally disconnected. I quit Aperture, reinserted the external harddrive, and reopened the library. Aperture told me that it detected inconsistencies in the library and that it would repair it. After finishing the repair process on the library, I tried to open it and got the following message: Warning, there is an error in the database of the library, and only gives me the option to quit the program.
    What can I do?

Hold down the option and command keys while you start Aperture this will open the library repair window. Select Repair Library, see if that clears the problem.
BTW what format of the external disk that the library is on?

The digitization of data has introduced a complexity to our interactions with it that we continue to struggle with.  "Picture" and "Photo" now mean different things in different contexts.  In this case (and in general) defining our terms clearly is the first step towards understanding what we are trying to do.  Understanding is the path that allows us to do it.
All pedantic, but please stick with me here  .
You record a set of instantaneous data with a camera.
That data is processed by your camera and saved to a file.
The file format is usually either RAW or JPG.
You transfer those files to your computer, and you import them into the program Aperture (often in one operation).
From each camera-file imported, Aperture creates a record in its database (called, imho unhelpfully, a Library) and an Image that you see in the Aperture Browser and Viewer.
Aperture links the Image and the imported file.
The imported file is called, within Aperture, an Original.
    Every Image has an Original.
The Image is not the Original.  The Image is what you see in Aperture.
The Original is a file that is stored on your computer.
You can make changes to an Image.
    Aperture calls these changes Adjustments.
Adjustments are saved to another file attached to the record in the database.  Let's call this file the Changes File.
Aperture uses these two files attached to the record in the database to create the Image.
Image = Original + Changes File.
The Image is not a file.
Because the Image is not a file, it cannot be shared with other programs.  It exists only inside of Aperture.
In order to share an Image with another program, you must first create a file of the Image.
You do this by exporting Images ("File ▹ Export ▹ Version" is the command in Aperture; should be, imho, "File ▹ Export ▹ Image").
You may ask, "Why all the complexity?  Why doesn't Aperture save Images as files?"  The answer is simple:  Images can require less — and in many cases very very much less — storage space than files of Images.  Rather than save a full-size file for every Image, Aperture saves only instructions on how to make that full-size file.  The gain in storage efficiency is huge.  The trade-off is that although your Images are always available to be made into share-able files, you must create those files when needed (which you do by exporting selected Images).
Here is your question reworded with more precise terms:
    SamanthaR22 might have written:

No, there is not.  Images exist only in Aperture, and are not accessible for use in other programs.  You must create, for each Image in your Aperture Library, a new file outside of your Aperture Library in order to use it with another program.
Aperture does allow you to create and save within your Library share-able files of your Images.  These files are called Previews.  You specify the file parameters in Aperture Preferences on the Previews tab.  These files are available to other programs via the OS X Media Browser.  These files are what you get when you drag selected Images out of the Aperture program and drop them on another program or on your desktop (which is part of the Finder).

  • Merging project (sync 2 library's) doesn't work anymore.

    Hello,
I have a Mbp and an Imac
Whenever I want to export a project as a new library (on the mbp) and then import this in my Imac's aperture library, the merging  doesn't work anymore!
I have just updated aperture to the latest version.
Before updating this worked excellent! And my library on the iMac is almost the same as on my mbp.
Now, whenever I transport a project from one library to the other, it does not merge (however I can choose that?!) When I do, my mac is running, and after finnishing I don't see anything new projects (or photo's) I've imported. When I choose "ad" then all is ok. But the new project is placed in a new folder (duplicated!) so after importing I have 2 folders 2012 ? That way I have to move the project to the 2012 folder and removing the 2012(1) folder.
Now, when I make changes and want updating in my other library,it does sync at all, and I must "add" the project again to see the difference? That way I all have duplicates.
I've tried repairing permissions, repair database and rebuilding the databases. Nothing helped
When I import the exported project in a new library I created, then all is ok.
My library is build as follow:
I import files in a new project (most managed files, previous years as refferenced on my HD)
This project I placed in folders (year) (most managed files, previous years as refferenced on my HD)
MBP early 2011. 750GB OSX 10.8.2  Aperture latest version (3.4.2)
    Imac OSX  10.8.2, Aperture 3.4.2
I have a backup on my time machine, both mbp and iMac
    Please advice
Excuse me for my translation, because English isn't my home language. I hope it is readable enough..;-))

    Everything works well now!
I have both librarys on each mac rebuild trough merge the library in an compleet new one.
(The library on my mbp was 70GB and now half of it!!! And all pictures are still present!! ) There must be something wrong with the original library!! Lots of duplicated items wich I don't seem to find!
Now I have tested, and everything works well, I can ad new projects from one mac to the other, and after editing and merging, the main library on my mac is updating every chance I made in the mbp!
It was a very long time lasting job...ppffft!
Thank you for your reply's Ernie!
I now have time to take pictures again...;-)  haha
    Cheers Anne

  • IPhoto 08 is gone...can see the icon but doesn't open. Any suggestions?

I was working on getting my Time Capsule to backup my MacBook and erased everything on there. When I restarted and got the time capsule to work i couldn't open my Iphoto anymore and cannot open any new photos that I download..
If I click on the icon it bounces then stops and nothing happens. When i search my applications folder the iphoto application is not there. When i search the "myname"macbook drive>iPhoto I can see the iphoto app. (doesn't open, crashes immediately), the contents folder (the plug-ins disabled and resources disabled items do not open)
    Any help would be appreciated.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that doesn't help:
    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.

  • My updated version of iMovie doesn't work. It opens, shows iMovie window but completely white, just with the grey bar on top which doesn't respond to actions.

    Greetings,
Thanks to all in advance for your time and help.
My iMovies doesn't seem to work; when I open it, it appears the normal iMovie window but white, all white, nothing can be seen except for the gray bar on top with the signs Import/Create ecc. All the options available on the gray bar on top of the window don't work, the input doesn't go through. All the options on the top TOP barr (where the battery, time, day, airport is shown) are all grayed out. I can't do anything.
How can it get worst? It can: now after opening iMovie and trying to do something, without succeeding, I cant even quit the program, not even with force quit. I have to keep the general ON/OFF computer button pressed until everything shuts down. (and this is bad for the computer too). When I turn the computer on again it says: "you turned off the computer because of a problem", I ignore and access my data normally.
Thank you again for your time.
Hope to hear from someone soon.
    Regards
    Matt

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

    I have a big problem.. iMovie '08 doesn't start!
    1. First I tried to delete the home/library/preferences/:
    com.apple.garageband.cs
    com.apple.garageband.plist
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    but nothing ...
    2. Second I tried ti delete Macintosh HD/libray/caches .... but nothing!
    3. I changed the monitor profile to "Adobe RGB"... but nothing..
    4. The only solution is move the iPhoto library to another folder... so iMovie starts!! But if I start iPhoto and I select the library folder, iMovie doesn't starts!!!
    Any suggestion please?

When iMovie 08 hangs at launch, i always delete the perian component and it works !
this file is located in : home/library/quicktime/perian.component.
    This very often works.

  • Copy items to the iPhoto Library option doesn't seem to work

    Hi, I'm using 7.1.1 and if I:
    1. De-select the create "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" option in Preferences/Advanced
    2. Create a new library
It doesn't seem to work. The images are still being copied into the library -- that is, if I show the package contents of the library, the data directory has the photos. Additionally, if I do something like open, modify in photoshop and save one of the imported files, it doesn't show up in iPhoto. Likewise if I modify the file in iPhoto and then look at the photo in the file system using Preview or Photoshop, the iPhoto changes don't appear.
Is this a bug? Is it not supposed to work like this? I believe that if I say "don't copy the files into the library" it means that it uses my original photos in their original location and that changes I make in iPhoto modify and manipulate the original files.
I've tried this on two different machines and get the same results. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    markand:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's not a bug. You don't understand correctly how iPhoto works in the "referenced" library mode. The Data folder contains the thumbnail files that iPhoto creates and needs to operate. The Originals folder will contain alias files linked to the source files at their location. Any edits, by iPhoto or by Photoshop configured correctly will result in a modified file in the Modified folder of iPhoto. *You should not open, rename, move or edit any file in the library package from the Finder.*
Using Photoshop to edit photos in iPHoto must be done by selecting PS as the editor to use in iPhoto's General Preferences section. Then follow the instructions below to edit photos correctly:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
