ITunes hangs when backing up
I am trying to back up my iphone 4 so that I can update to the new iOS 5. I have downloaded the new iTunes version 10.5 and since then I can't access the iTunes store or backup my device. I have removed and reinstalled iTunes, I have moved the last backup file to a different location and nothing. Any help?

In windows 7, click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator". Once it opens, type in the following command...
netsh winsock reset
hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer.
Hope it helps you too.

Itunes hangs when trying to uncheck encryption for iphone backup.
Itunes hangs when trying to uncheck encryption for iPhone backup. The iTunes software becomes unusable and unresponsive after entering correct password (only set up today) All i want to do is backup my iPhone before trying update to the latest ios. I have tried uninstalling all Apple software and re-installing, all unsuccessfully - still have the same problem! Essentially i have to use ctr+alt+del to even close the iTunes program, so I'm assuming there must be some sort of corruption with the encryption / password setup - neither of which have been used at all, all previous backups are on iCloud and don't have encryption. I obviously don't want to attempt a backup with these sort of issues occurring as i don't think i could trust it. Can anyone suggest a way to fix the problem, Ive tried googling all afternoon without any success - most answers I can find relate to people who have lost their passwords but don't have the software issues i am having.
Further to the issue - i thought I'd try and run an encrypted backup for fun (since that's the only option available atm) and the backup hangs as well - in fact it doesn't even technically start other than saying its backing up. The progress bar never moves at all?

ITunes Hangs when first opening
I have iMac, late 2009 i7 2.8 with 12 GB Ram. Latest Lion and iTunes. My iTunes library is on an external Firewire 800, 7200, 128 cache HD. I have 17,000 songs. Everything has worked great before. When I open iTunes, everything loads quickly. But, when I go to play a track, I get the Beach Ball for about 90 seconds. Then the track plays fine. After that, all other tracks play fine and instantly. Here's what I have tried
Rebuilding permissions (external and internal drive)
Disk repair (both drives)
Hardware test All OK
SMART Status OK
Removed all playlists
Unplugged and plugged in RAM modules (no luck)
Changed FW cable
Trashed iTunes Preferences
Option click iTunes to change libraries
Removed Focusrite DAC from chain to internal speakers only
All other apps work fine. I have no plug ins or smart playlists. Hangs even if I make a new user account. Please helpWell I finally figured this one out. I defragmented my external HD. iTunes is faster than it ever has been (my itunes media folder is on external drive). I ran Drive Genius and it showed that my external mirror drive was 15% fragmented. You can see specific fragmented files and everyone was an iTunes track. It took 20 hours for the softwar to complete the defrag process and my External HD is running like a dream. I guess iTunes hangs when trying to search for the location of tracks.

ITunes hangs when 'Add Folder to Mediathek'
iTunes hangs when 'Add Folder to Mediathek'
I have iTunes installed afresh on Windows-8.1. I have added folders (interpreter\album) to the Mediathek successfully, however sometimes when I do that I get a partly displayed screen of the folders-menu, I cannot scroll or select any folder and iTunes hangs. I have to shut iTunes down using the Task-Manager, start Windows-8.1 again, then it might work alright. Has anybody any hints what to do?
Thank you very much in advance.
Hans M.Interesting: Once I had folders (interpreter\album) existing in the folder "iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\" (probably from albums bought from iTunes-Store, I could copy all my own folderpairs to be added to the Mediathek into "iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\" and could add folders from there. That has the advantage to have all folderpairs in on big Music-folder for saving purposes.

ITunes hangs when I connect my phone
iTunes 10.2.1.1, iPhone 3GS iOS 4.3, Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.
Short summary: when I connect my phone to sync, iTunes hangs. If I let it sit for a minute or two it will eventually crash. If I disconnect my phone before this then iTunes starts responding just fine.
Details:
I just "flattened" my computer: formatted the drive, reinstalled the OS (and upgraded to Win 7 SP1 off of a DVD with the combined install). The computer waas fine before this, I just wanted to do some spring cleaning. My iTunes library is sitting on a server and has always been accessed over the network.
After the re-install of the OS I installed iTunes and pointed it at my library. That was fine. Then I connected the phone. At that point it was running iOS 4.2.something. I decided to upgrade to iOS 4.3. That seemed to work fine. After that when I connect the phone iTunes hangs.
I decided to reset the phone with the option to erase all content and settings. iTunes now worked ok. So I did an initial sync, telling it to set it up as a new phone. I did not sync any music at this point--I have ~22GB of music, it takes a long time to sync. This still worked fine. So then I sync'd the phone again, this time installing all the music. Again iTunes hangs.
I wondered if the library was screwed up. So I installed iTunes on a laptop (running Win 2008 Server R2), pointed it at my same library (still over the network). Then started over: reset the phone, clearing all settings & content. Sync from the laptop. It works fine. Sync the music from the laptop, it still works fine. It also seems clear that it's not a problem with the iTunes library.
Back to my original computer, the one with problems, my wife is using it logged in with her account and syncing her iPad without any problems. However, she has very little music on her iPad, maybe one ripped CD, whereas my iPhone has hundreds.
So the issue seems specific to this one computer & phone that has a lot of music on it. I never had a problem on the computer before, but that was iTunes before 10.2, iOS 4.2 (and earlier), Win 7 without SP1, ... So I've changed lots of things at the same time and am not sure which one really created the problem. Although I wonder if it's a problem with Service Pack 1. I don't have any concerns about a bad install of the SP, since I did a full install of the OS that already had SP1 integrated into it. But maybe iTunes 10.2.1.1 has an issue with SP1.
Any suggestions?I've been following a Windows forum about the freezing problem. It happened to us and our three iOS devices immediately after upgrading Windows 7 64-bit to SP1. There were plenty of others with the same problem. Rolling back SP1 solved it instantly. Reinstalling SP1 caused it instantly. No amount of cleanly uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime, iTunes, or any components helped.
Although I have an image of my system before SP1 that I could revert to, I didn't want to. Luckily *a temporary fix is to run iTunes in Vista compatibility mode*. The iOS device will now be recognized most, if not all, of the time. ITunes will run like molasses, but that's better than being unable to sync any of your devices ever again. (I could describe compatibility mode, but you seem PC-savvy.)
Here is the specific trouble I am addressing, although it is only part of your trouble. We plug in one of our iPhones or our Touch, iTunes hangs for a couple of minutes. Windows sees the device as a camera if applicable, but the device never appears in iTunes. It's worth repeating that Windows doesn't have trouble recognizing the device. The problem is with iTunes.
And yes, everyone tried all sorts of things with the Apple Mobile Device utility. People even tried "nuking" all their USB drivers and letting them get rebuilt on startup. The only temporary fix found so far is Vista mode, and the only permanent fix is downgrading the OS to before SP1. -
ITunes hangs on "Backing up" after 4.2 update?
I just updated my iPad from 3.2 to 4.2, which appeared to work properly. The backup initiated by iTunes is hanging, it's been stuck at about 95% full for about half an hour now. Spinning beach ball and no response from iTunes. The iPad has the black screen with silvered Apple logo and shows the same progress bar, about 95% complete.
Is it time to force-quit iTunes? Should I wait longer?
Can force-quitting during a backup do any harm?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/ advice...I'll answer my own question, in case anyone in the future cares...
2-hour Apple tech support call with one elevation to a higher level...
It appears that one app installed on the iPad was installed by an IT pro at my wife's office, with his account and password. When I tried to update the iOS and sync the iPad, it was hanging while backing up the app whose account was not present.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, which did not affect the issue. I did a reboot of the (crashed, frozen) iPad, and it got partway through startup before appearing to crash again (not connected to the computer). After about a half an hour, the startup process suddenly completed itself, and the iPad was back, working normally. But it still wouldn't sync.
For that, I had to delete the app that had been installed by the IT guy's account. Now the iPad syncs normally, and everything's working. -
ITunes hangs when I try to sync with my apple devices
Hello,
I have followed troubleshooting article iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch but this hasn't help me fix the issue.
I am running OS/X 10.9.4 and iOS 7.1.2
When I create a new user account on my MAC the devices connect fine. If I create another iTunes Library on my original user account then iTunes still hangs when I connect the devices. The article doesn't describe what to do next. What other configuration information is there that is common across both iTunes Libraries?
Thank you,Back up all data.

ITunes hangs when attempting to connect to Airport Express
I searched and couldn't find anything directly relevant. Here is my problem:
I am using a Powerbook G4 to stream audio to an Airport Express. This has worked with no major issues for almost two years on a WEP encrypted network. Yesterday I did the following:
Update OS from 10.4.9 to 10.4.11
Update iTunes from 7.4 to 7.5
Change encryption to WPA
The Airport Express light is green, and I can access its settings through Airport Admin Utility. The Airport Express is visible as an option in iTunes, and when I select it a small window pops up saying something along the lines of "Connecting to AirportName". The connection never happens, and iTunes hangs on this window indefinitely.
Any thoughts? I did the updates so I could use my new iPod touch, and I switched to WPA because I read somewhere that it is more secure.
Thanks for any helpI had a similar experience and found patience to be the answer. For some reason it took 5-10 minutes for my Apple TV to get past the "Loading Mike's Media" message. In the meantime my iTunes was unresponsive. My library is not exceptionally large (about 160gb with 57 movies and 67 TV shows).
After that initial long wait, I tried switching back and forth between Apple TV as the source and my iTunes as the source. Each subsequent reconnect to iTunes only took about 40 seconds.
I have no idea why it takes so long. I did a little probing, and iTunes was neither using much CPU nor doing much I/O during the long wait. Quite odd. -

Itunes hangs when burning cd's - possible solutions
Hello everyone,
I've had what appears to be the same problem as many many more people on this site.
I haven't got a complete fix, after 4 months of trying but I've got as far as I have with the help of Toonz and the people at Apple.
Now here is what I have found:
1. The problem with my Itunes hanging at burning only happens if I have a mixed playlist that I am trying to burn. When I say mixed I mean a mix of purchased tracks and uploaded tracks from my cd collection. Just uploaded tracks work fine.
2. If I just burn a playlist of purchased tracks it works fine too.
3. If I don't control alt delete when it hangs, and I wait for up to 2 minutes, the burn evenutally kicks in. Don't do anything. Just leave it and see what happens. I was having to control alt delete to get out of the unresponsive Itunes, but by chance, yesterday, discovered that by leaving it it finally burnt my cd! This was a mixed cd with both purchased tracks and uploaded tracks.
Now, the people at Apple don't yet know why this is doing this. It only happens since version 6 of Itunes. This version (I think) was the first to introduce the "checkingplaylist" stage of burning and they seem to think that it might just be something to do with that.
Anyway, that all helped me. It is still frustrating to have to wait for a couple of minutes, but it's better than nothing. They are still trying to get to the bottom of this for me, too.
I hope this helps at least some of you.
Please give me some feedback if it has, as I'd love to know that all my efforts over the last few months could help others!
Good luck
JaneI think I'm in love...
I just spent the past 3 hours running through reinstalls of iTunes, looking at every support topic and finally found this wonderful, wonderful thread.
I am having the same exact problem with mixed playlist burns.
I also have great success with waiting for only about 1-2 minutes while iTunes shows "Not Responding". Then it fires right up and burns perfectly.
Thank you for posting this quazi solution, and it has helped me tremendously. Well, at least it has saved me from having to transfer all of my music to a new digital music manager.
I hope this issue gets resolved soon

ITunes hangs when trying to eject a disc
I've been stumped by this for a couple months now. At first I thought iTunes and Toast Titanium were fighting for control of the CD player, but now it happens even when Toast is not open.
I'm using iTunes 7.1.1 and about once a day I will try to eject a disc -- or even play a track from it -- and I get the spinning beachball. Force quitting usually doesn't work, but even if it does I can't get the disc to eject without a restart. (This includes using the "drutil tray eject" line command in Terminal, ejecting from Finder or using Disk Utility, which also hangs when I try to open it.) Can't find anything remotely relevant in the Console logs.
I've tried reverting to an earlier iTunes, trashing .plist files, to no avail. My CD player is NEC 3550-A, which is not technically supported for Mac, but I've had it for years and it's worked fine.I'm having the same problem.
